Location, and character of an old building. Breakfast was excellent. Quiet in the room despite a very noisy High Street.
Our room was very small and we had to rearrange to get access to both sides of the bed. We did observe that there were larger rooms available. Also the many staircases made it difficult for someone of limited mobility.
Wie immer Full british und gut.
It’s a lovely building with lots of character and has Tudor beam work throughout, the location is in Colchester Town itself with everything you need practically on the doorstep. You definitely get a historic feel as well as a good vibe of the hotel itself and its staff member (daytime and night staff members were amazing), I particularly liked overlooking Lions Walk as I walked through the corridors, with the lights of an evening. The bed was very comfortable and the staff themselves were very helpful and couldn’t be more welcoming, as well as informative.
Beautiful historic building in need of a little TLC. I understand this is a Grade-listed property with beautiful period features and restrictions around renovations. However, a lot of the interior currently feels worn down rather than historic. A gentle refresh not a modernisation, but a replacement of tired items would go a long way. The room I stayed in was not aesthetically pleasing due to how worn down certain things looked (the bed was clean and comfortable), as well as generally seemed to be just put in the room rather than any decor plan or cohesion to it. Unfortunately the bathtub was heavily stained from age, the housekeeping staff clearly cleaned it well, but it has reached a point where no amount of scrubbing will make it look clean. It simply needs replacing to match the potential of this charming building.
The hotel was extremely well maintained, in a great location for the town centre and not too far from transport options. Rooms were clean and staff were friendly and helpful
The rooms were a bit warm, however there was a fan in the room
It is a very old Hotel but it has a lot of charm! We did enjoy staying right in the mix of things. The location is excellent. The staff was very nice and helpful. Would stay again.
Staff were helpful and friendly. Good location in centre of town
Lots of character and loved my room. Bed was really comfortable. Staff very friendly. Great location. Good value for money
A little run down. Shower was faulty but immediately offered a different room.Would stay again.
Paid for early check-in but had to wait, but did get refunded for that, the breakfast was nice and the person serving it.
The bed was the main issue, the matress was full of springs that didn't spring once laid down you was sleeping mainly on bed base, uncomfortable sleep, Rusty taos ans chip in the bath, so didn't use it.
The atmosphere the decorations the theme everything I’m still processing that I was there
The nothing i disliked abt it other than not being able to stay longer
It was wonderful to stay in such a historical building, which has maintained it´s original features and charm. Well worth opting for the breakfast. We were warmly welcomed and the staff met our needs throughout our stay from a warm welcome to a pleasant farewell. Most definitely will be staying there again!! Thank you! 👍😁💃
Thought it was the perfect location as at castle park for concert like a nice old worldy hotel
The noise levels were horrendous opposite trilogy night club so 4am there still out partying family the road sweepers were out bed so uncomfortable you fell into the middle of it there was a window broken taps in bathroom dried all night breakfast was a sham after being charged twice for it which was crafty in the owners part I purchased a room with breakfast included to then pay again and half of it was cold and inedible staff not very helpful as barely spoke fluent English website dated and not full information on it
Location , room
Breakfast , shower , and the pub not opening an evening
location room was spacious
shower (needs fixing onto wall) breakfast
Very friendly & welcoming at reception. A nice touch with the hand written note on my pillow. Very clean room & bathroom. Huge comfortable bed with soft clean bed linen. Really good breakfast too. Will definitely stay again. Super stay all round, thank you to the staff 👍
Nothing
Amazing reception staff, so friendly si very very helpful and great. Lovely building full of history great location definitely stay again
Nothing
Convenient location for my visit.
Bathroom wasn't great. Shower hose was broken so sprayed water everywhere. View from window was a huge brick wall. It was the ok for the purpose of my visit but probably won't stay again.
Lovely old building
Amazing hotel, old world charm and character. Excellent friendly professional staff - made you feel welcome straight away. Food was very good and service was excellent. Highly recommend this exceptional hotel to all of our friends and definitely be back to visit again.
Maybe a problem for people who have difficulty with stairs but it's a traditional old world hotel and would not change a thing about it.
The 4 poster bed. lovely very old building, beautiful old rooms with beams, they have configured the rooms really well. This is a really quirky building that is well worth visiting.
We had a little of difficulty with parking, but was not as bad as we though before we got there, the floorboards creak a lot but what can you expect from a building from 1515!
I stay here regularly. I love the location and the staff are really nice
Great location Nice staff
Goood service
No Fan.It was really hot inside the room.
The hotel is located in a really good spot in the centre, also the building is very nice looking and still has lot of its old features, staff were helpful and pleasant to deal with.
The bed mattress was the worse I have ever slept on the springs have gone and you can feel every lump and bump in it. The bathroom was very dated and tired, yellowed show curtain, discoloured bath tub grout that was all cracked and pealing away. The cleaners had done there best to make the room clean but being in the condition there is only so much they could do.
It’s unusualness.
The “non” attention to detail.
Location
The window would not stay open to let in fresh air.
Location and nice rooms
Beautiful historic building, close to centre and train station
Being in the centre of town it could be noisy at nights, nothing that earplugs didn't sort
Fantastisch mooi hotel!
Lovely and friendly staff
Rooms were a bit dated
Location in centre of town.
Breakfast finished early 9am .No car park.
Slept well.
I got bed bugs from this property
Location Friendly staff Great coffee
No bath mat No portable fan during hot weather Noise at nighttime
Everything
Nothing. Very comfortable sta
Erg aardig personeel.
De hygiëne was zeker een aandachtspunt.
Location was perfect, breakfast was very tasty, price paid was good for location of hotel.
Toilet was very dodgy, seat was not connected properly and hubby thought the toilet may fall through the floor (he is a plumber ) the bathroom is very dated, as was the decor of the room but the bed was very comfy and the fan was an added bonus as with the age of the hotel it had no air-con.
The hotel is five centuries old, so expect to be staying in a kind of museum with a lot of charm, but with sloping, creaking floors and no air conditioning. The breakfast was great, and the price-quality ratio was excellent.
Well it was hot, but outside was a heatwave, and it cooled during the night
The hotel apologized for the situation and I got an immediate refund.
Unfortunately my room had bed bugs. Since all other rooms were booked out, I had to find another hotel in the middle of the night which was of course very stressful.
Location is great, at the centre of the high street. Room size OK. Breakfast is good.
Nothing. Quality and price break equal.
Dusty and dirty
It’s on the high street
Hotel was located in the city centre with public car parking fairly close
One small fan for a triple room wasn’t effective. There was a sign asking for the window not to be left open due to pigeons. Hotel in a real need for some updating.
It was walking distance to where I needed to be on that occasion
It could really do with a deep clean of the carpets and some new furniture
Room was amazing location was in the middle of Colchester absolutely amazing 100000000000/10 i recommend this to anyone who wants to stay in Colchester and have a little bit of fun with it being haunted
nothing it was amazing
Great location and very helpful and pleasant staff.
It was unfortunately very warm. But I was given a fan so I survived. The shower was a bit primitive but it is an old building so to be expected!
Building dating back to 1482! Historical charm guaranteed. Very polite and helpful staff.
Nothing
Bedbugs in the room.
Posizione ottima Pulizia buona
Aggiungere ventilatore (fatto)
Close to the city centre
Old fittings, bath towel rail capped off with red tape Bath repaired. Old decor.
We've been coming here for several years now and always look forward to staying. Managers, Angela and Peter are always so friendly, helpful and professional. The rooms have a charming historical character and the breakfast is fantastic. The hotel is in a perfect central location which is a plus when wanting to explore.
The hotel is an interesting, slightly quirky building, an old coaching inn that's been there hundred of years. The staff were helpful and friendly, and always available. It's right in the middle of Colchester, near the castle, museums and all the amenities.
We were in a room on the first floor at the front, and it being a Friday night it was incredibly noisy with all the nightlife of the high street right outside the window. I went and spoke to the staff and they very helpfully moved us to a quiet and lovely room in the back of the hotel. This hotel has some fine quiet comfortable rooms up at the back - if you want a good nights sleep do specify you would prefer one of these.
Location, friendly staff, hotel
None
The rooms are old fashioned and the hotel with all its original tudor style is perfect for anyone looking for a historical building. It couldnt be more central in Colchester. The breakfast wasn't huge but there were options including cereal and cooked.
Nice old feel
The building itself is beautiful. Its a listed building but it seems to be used as an excuse to not do anything to it.
The mattress was so uncomfortable that it actually bruised me! There was shouting and screaming outside until 1am, which I know wasnt the hotels fault but it just summed up my stay. The shower was either burning hot or freezing. There was food from a previous guest around the bed. There was mold and mildew in the bath room and I believe the water from the taps gave me a bad stomach because as soon as I stopped drinking the water and bought bottled, I got better. Also this location is not accessible at all.
As soon as i walked through the door i was in awe of the arctectual aspects of the building. First impressions i was impressed, as i had never been in a Tudor building previously to this occassion. I liked that the hotel is in a central location i went to the book shop opposite the street to ask where it was only to be sent back across the street with a giggle. The breakfast was good and, my room i srayed in was comfortable, The staff were lovely and helpful a real friendly feel.
There was nothing that i didnt like,.
Location
Very hot, window did not open after about 2 inches as they had a pigeon problem. Filthy bedding, everything dilapadated. No hot water. Only one of the lights worked. TV did not work Spent the night in my car which was much more clean and comfortable
Location great and the staff were so helpful.
No hairdryer or mini fridge in the room.
Yes
Absolutely beautiful so comfortable and staff was so friendly helpful and easy to talk to. The history of the place was just beautiful to
Nothing apart from wishing it was a longer stay
Staff was nice
Cleanliness was an issue for sure. 28 degrees outside and the window wouldn't stay open so they gave us an empty bucket to prop it open? Was still boiling in the room. Booked to have 3 beds in the room it had 2 and then a camp bed, bit annoying when you pay so much for the room
Loved the original parts of the building, old beams etc
Kettle was filthy, hair dryer I got from reception wasn’t much cleaner either.
Perfect
Nothing
The old beams and architecture
The bathrooms and bedroom was in need of love, some smears in the bathroom from I presume previous guests and wallpaper peeling in the room
