The North Hill Hotel, Colchester

The room was very good value for money and extremely clean and comfortable. The staff friendly and helpful.

Could do with decorating as paint peeling from the walls in places

Suited us perfectly for access to the high street and the Colchester Arts Centre. Reasonably priced, basic but clean and comfortable.

Room was fine, received some ear buds - i think in case the locals were a little noisey, but we did not experience this.

No lift, and I did bring a big heavy case. but was offered help to carry it up stairs.

Room was compact but comfortable, breakfast was good and the location was excellent for pubs, restaurants and shops. Only a few minutes walk from Colchester Arts Centre which was why I visited.

Location is pretty central. Bed was quite comfortable.

Can’t open the windows more than an inch. No blinds in the bathroom so you need to close the window & sweat while using the toilet or shower or risk the whole street seeing you! When the sun is shining the bathroom is blinding!!! Curtains in the room were terrible, falling off the rail! And a street light right outside was not helpful as we couldn’t close the curtains!!! Very basic shower, soaked the floor as the doors do not shut properly.

Unfortunately the hotel cancelled our reservation with very little notice and no explanation. This was particularly disappointing as we had booked it 9 months in advance

Staff weren’t particularly friendly. Very noisy, playing music downstairs in the restaurant area. You can hear people going up and down the stairs. Pillows were not comfortable, quite thin.

We arrived having booked a King and 2 double rooms, paid the hotel, to then be given a King, Double and single room- for 6 adults (3 couples). The hotel was full, and despite showing proof of my booking there was no apology and they refused a refund stating I had to go through Booking.com. We had to find an alternate accommodation as we had an event at the Castle Park to attend. It took me many hours of calls, emails, messenger contact to receive my refund from the hotel and then it was a bank transfer rather than back on the card I paid on. Still no apology for the waste of time, energy and money. Booking have been brilliant at helping me resolve, however.

No toiletries, not even soap provided. Breakfast vey overcooked fried food, eggs solid. Toast cold and tea luke warm. Shortage of staff. Noisy road but that’s not hotels fault.. small room and small double bed very uncomfortable and mattress didn’t seem to fit the bed in room 3. Don’t write bad reviews but thought this place deserved it. FYI staff polite but breakfast staff probably need some customer service training,

The breakfast was really good and the location very convenient for the centre of town but far enough away from the pubs and nightclub not to be disturbed.

At time of booking I asked for a quiet room at the back (impossible to sleep in rooms facing the street). When arrived was told they were not aware of my request, only had rooms in the front. Made no effort to help, awful staff attitude. I refused the room and left but was charged regardless. Since new owners took over standards are awful. They lost another customer.

No air conditioning, only a stand up fan and the room was facing the main road

Zeer vriendelijke en behulpzame ontvangst. Het hotel was netjes en de kamer was opgeruimd. Ruime kamer met ruime badkamer. Het bed was prima en de ventilator zorgde voor een goede verkoeling. Het ontbijt was degelijk.

Toch weer een lange zwarte haar gevonden. De televisie was wat klein, maar vooral zijn locatie was erg ongemakkelijk. De meneer die het ontbijt begeleidde keek erg streng.

The staff were extremely loud in the morning, having conversations in the corridor to the point where we had to ask them to be more quiet to which they replied "we need to clean the rooms" and continued their conversations. When we came back in the evening, a random man was sleeping on the sofa in the lobby. The bathroom ceiling had evidently had a leak in the past and had stained the ceiling brown. The bathroom floor also didn't seem very clean. The pillows and bedding were very uncomfortable. Overall, this hotel is extremely overpriced and we were very disappointed with our room and experience. The only good thing is the location but I would rather be slightly further out of the centre than come here again.

The property seemed fine but we booked a queen suite through booking.com then was given a “deluxe double” upon arrival, this was not the room we booked.

Don’t book using booking.com for this property as the rooms they are offering g are not the rooms you are booking, also after sorting this out with the property and getting a refund while there booking.com have marked as a no show and now charge my credit card that I need to now fight a robot to try and get back as they can’t understand a simple instruction

O alojamento não pareceu estar preparado para temperaturas muito elevadas: o quarto ficava muito quente e não tinha ar condicionado. Além disso, tanto o quarto como a casa de banho eram bastante pequenos, e a janela dava para uma estrutura de vidro, o que tornava o espaço menos agradável.

Had standard double room which needed a tidy up. Paint peeling off the wall in one area and scuffs on skirt board just need a lick of paint to freshen..the room was baking hot but a fan was provided. The excess heat was beyond their control

Paper walls and that room was tiny and did not have the window which you could open. It was hot during the night and day and even fan did not help.

Limited choices. Would have liked to have scrambled or poached egg on toast.

No complaints, it was a perfect location for the centre of Colchester

I am highlighting what needs to be fixed.

Room 1 is old old, and the bathroom windows are floor to ceiling with a privacy stick-on screen. The corners of one have been cut off and leave you exposed (see pic). This is on the window where you will see everything. I wonder why they have done this? It sounded like anyone walking outside was in your room. See the ear plugs - do you like the street noise? The room price is not cheap enough for this. My standards are very low, and this did not meet them. I do not normally write bad reviews like this, but the property needs to sort this out now.

It’s on a main arterial route through the city in the heart of the main pedestrian and through fare so no or limited parked ( there is a NCP car park opposite ) which is safe and well lit

The cosiness the location, breakfast was delicious and stuffs were very friendly. The bed was comfortable

Hotel in good town centre location and was clean

Not really any customer service, we mentioned it was our anniversary when booking and no congratulations or welcome. Informed we hadn't booked breakfast and then told our room was on level 2 and no lift access with suitcases. It was the hottest day and no fan in the room and it was unbearable. Advertised as King Room but not a king-size bed and coffee machine with no coffee pods. Just take the machine away as this is so frustrating for guests. Room was poor value for money as we also booked a room in Great Yarmouth with breakfast included and great facilities so the comparison was there.

The stuff was ok, the room was clean, just was uncomfortable and not as in pictures...

The room wasn't as in pictures, the window was rubbish, the bathroom to tiny and noisy shower, the lamps didn't work...overall it was a 40£ maximum room, not 73

I enjoyed my 3 days stay in this small clean and bright hotel with friendly staff and an excellent cooked breakfast.

The hill is a challenge- locals are very fit.

Have stayed at the North Hill Hotel previously and always found it very satisfactory. It is now under new management and the new team are clearly still finding their way! Nonetheless the staff were delightful and very helpful and the stay was again very satisfactory and good value.

Es war an sich alles ok. In meinem Bad hat es allerdings geschimmelt. Ein sehr unangenehmer Geruch. Sobald man dort eingetreten ist. Der Lüfter war außerdem defekt. Die gesamte Decke über der Dusche war mit Schwarz Schimmel bedeckt. Habe keine Rückerstattung bekommen.

Clean and good location

Noisy from the cars driving past at all hours, no lift and uncomfortable beds.

The proximity to where I needed to reach the following day, nearby restaurants and fairly easy access from the train station were all positives. I was met promptly after ringing the reception bell and was shown how to access the building if I returned and the front door was then locked

The room was quite small and cold on arrival. I had to shut the window and then turn on the heating so that I could warm the room. The TV in the room was defective with lines across the screen making viewing a little awkward.
