A piscina é a vista panorâmica

I have put together this information to help anyone considering booking at the Monte Mar Palace Hotel in Madeira, especially Saga and other guests thinking of staying here. Overall, the holiday was not as it had been described or built up to be. It was a complete letdown. While there were some positive aspects, the negatives far outweighed them, and I hope this honest feedback is helpful to others considering this hotel. First, I would like to start with the few positive points: The staff at the hotel were consistently friendly and tried their best to address any requests or concerns. Special mention goes to Carmen—without her, there would be no Saga holiday. She was always approachable, provided valuable local information, and went above and beyond for guests. Housekeeping staff were also polite, even if standards varied. Now, for the negative side of things, which unfortunately is a long list: Breakfast was a disappointing experience from day one. There was very little food available, and what was there was usually cold. Beans and eggs were rubbery, and although there were eight tureens meant to keep food hot, the heaters were not turned on, so everything was cold. Pastries and bread were often stale, and the fruit selection was limited to a few unripe or overripe options. This pattern continued for both dinner and evening meals—the soup was never hot, and the menu lacked variety. Every day, the main dishes repeated: fish, meat, chicken, potatoes or chips, rice, vegetables, pasta, and a vegetarian option. Most dishes were bland and overcooked, and there were no themed nights or attempts to offer local cuisine. Desserts were similarly repetitive and uninspired. There is no other food available throughout the day, except for tea, coffee, cake, and biscuits served at 4pm in the lounge. Outside of set meal times, there are no snacks or light bites offered, The unlimited tea and coffee based on you staying by the bar and keep going up to ask for it on machines help yourself, which is disappointing for an all-inclusive package. For all hot drinks, you have to go to the bar; there are no self-service hot drink machines for all-inclusive guests. This often led to long waits, especially in the evenings or when large groups arrived back from excursions. On arrival, you receive one sealed bottle of water per room, but after that, you are expected to refill it from the tap unless you buy more bottled water. No additional complimentary bottled water is provided during your stay, which is not what you would expect from an all-inclusive hotel. You are also only allowed one bottle of water per room, which needs to be returned to reception for refilling. This system is awkward and means you cannot have more than one bottle at a time, even if there are several guests in the room. The hotel only provides one key per room, with no option for a second key. This is particularly inconvenient if your party plans to do separate activities, as you have to coordinate access constantly. The drinks package consists of just 12 choices, including 7 soft drinks and a handful of local spirits, beers, and wines. The choice is limited, and branded drinks are not included. Cocktails are basic and pre-mixed, lacking variety and quality. The indoor pool is fine and has warm water, though it is quite small and can get crowded at peak times. To use the sauna and steam rooms, you have to request at least half an hour to an hour in advance so they can be turned on. Towels and robes are available at an extra charge, and there are no complimentary spa amenities for all-inclusive guests. A robe costs 10 euros, with a 15 euro deposit. If you lose your ticket, there is no refund. This policy is very strict, and staff are not flexible even when mistakes are genuine. As for entertainment, it was very poor—just five nights a week, and the same shows repeated weekly. There was no printed or posted information about the entertainment schedule; you had to rely on other guests to find out what was happening. Activities during the day were almost non-existent, and there were no organized excursions or events for guests. While staying at the resort, your options for activities are limited. Walking is possible, but due to the location of the hotel, you are restricted to walking in a circle around the property. The main issue is the steep terrain; there are many large uphill and downhill sections, which makes it nearly impossible for anyone who finds walking difficult. There is a small café across from the hotel that offers snacks and coffee. Beyond that, it is a 45-minute uphill walk to a very small supermarket, one café, a chemist, and a cash machine. Bus service is infrequent and unreliable, so be sure to allow plenty of time if you need to travel to the next town. If you take the bus to Funchal, expect the journey to take up to three hours, compared to just 40 minutes by car. Lastly, regarding housekeeping: sometimes the cleaners would only clean the sink. Some days, you would get all your towels replaced; other days, only some. The room was never vacuumed, and the beds were sometimes missed—especially if you had pulled them up yourself. In summary, while the staff try their best, the overall experience fell far short of expectations for an all-inclusive holiday. For those of you thing about this holiday check reviews first. I hope this detailed review helps others make an informed decision.
The garden
The staff weren’t very honest about other facilities in the area , they didn’t want you spending money locally, only in their hotel.
This was a last minute reservation while we were riding around the island on motorbikes and we really had no expectations so were very pleasantly surprised. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. We arrived late, but they made sure we got whatever we wanted from the dinner buffet before they broke it down. And much to our surprise, the buffet was quite nice. The breakfast buffet was pretty good too and we loved the fresh fruit available at both dinner and breakfast. The pool is huge and the outdoor area just beautiful. The pool bar has nice cocktails!
We didn’t have time to go for a massage and enjoy the spa.
The good is; it has a lovely view of the sea and hills / mountains. Generally great charismatic staff, the occasional music nights. The negative does not reflect the people within the hotel although it could use a little love, renovation to the indoor pool area, new hairdryers for the ladies and maybe some heating to the out door pool even 3 degrees Celsius. The food in the evening was that of an elderly care home so we never ate in despite having half-board. This was one of the most expensive of the 3 hotels I stayed on the island and with some work I think they could make it a 5* Hotel but right not it’s more of a 3* + due to the condition of certain areas. You also ideally need a car or they should have a shuttle bus at least once a day. I think people would pay the price with a small uplift if they did.
We cannot wait to return to this beautiful hotel! We came with Saga for two weeks and received a very warm welcome from our host Carmen on arrival. There were no forms to fill in on arrival and no queues, and within a few minutes we were shown to our room no 435 which was stunning with wonderful views over the North Atlantic Ocean and a welcome fruit basket and water. I would rate this hotel, which was built and opened in 2002, as 5 star plus due to the incredible cuisine, friendly and very helpful and professional staff at all times (from the cleaner to the cook to the restaurant and bar staff and reception, they cannot do enough to help you). We loved the location which was overlooking the ocean with the UNESCO Heritage Laurissilva forest behind us. The location is in Ponta Delgada, a lovely village. The hotel itself is quiet and extremely relaxing. Above all the wonderful and hard working staff who are all so lovely really made our holiday. I would describe this as the best holiday we have ever had. Thank you to our wonderful host Carmen, and to Juan and Paolo in the restaurant who made every mealtime special for us, and to all the other fantastic staff at the beautiful Monte Mar Palace Hotel. Lindi Marson-Taylor
O chão do quarto estava sujo e tinha algum pó!
Lovely hotel with absolutely stunning views. We booked a night here whilst we had a car exploring the north of the island. We wish we had stayed for 2 nights. The pool area was lovely and the aircon was good (and silent)
Nothing
Chambre propre,
The location is great. The sea view is amazing. The hotel is not new and needs renewal but is very clean. The staff is very nice. Pools and jacuzzi are very nice
As previously stated, the hotel needs some renewal,
I did not like anything, maybe only the location and the views. Service was nice! Nice man in the reception. food is bad, very poor selection, hotel was 4 star 30 years ago!! Beds ar old and uncomfortable, had a bad sleep, pillows ar disaster, whole hotel smells bad and mold is everywhere. Very very old hotel!! For that money that we payed it doesn’t worth it!! Band experience!
Lokalizacja, widok z balkonu, pomocny personel-pomogli z wypożyczeniem auta
Nada a declarar....
We are staying at The Monte Mar Palace Hotel as I type this review…..it is super value and an excellent product…..family run and totally “non corporate”….those who write bad reviews and pick holes should in my opinion compare “ apples with apples”……sure it’s not a 5 star hotel in say Dubai or Mayfair London but they charge accordingly…for the price it offers a superb product and in a really lovely setting. The Rooms are spacious, very clean and comfortable. The food is plentiful varied and well cooked. Staff are friendly and very helpful. What more can you ask for!
Lovely staff - everything we went to desk for was quickly sorted with a smile. The hotel itself is a bit of a tired sole that badly needs upgrading, lots of cracked tiles on the floor, loose slabs, tiles missing from the pool. Sun beds old and needed a jolly good clean. The hotel was built in 1989 and I think then it would have been amazing. Now the carpets are worn, curtains in our room 228 literally had holes in them where they had been opened and closed so often. Chairs in room so faded from the sun everything looks old and outdated. Mirror in room losing its reflection in lots of places. Wood veneer splitting away on bottom of bathroom door. We were only booked in for breakfast which was your normal choice of hot and cold buffet food, everyone should be able to find enough to eat. The really down side is no beach to access, and being on the north side of the island not much sun! Hotel should really be refitted, or down graded to 3 star hotel. Sold as child free in UK. Lots of children though from other countries that sell this as a family hotel. We enjoyed our stay overall but does need a good clean and a refit!
Good size room but very hot. There was AC but it didn't appear to be working. Most people were leaving their balcony doors open during the night. Bath/shower, safe which you had to pay for, mini fridge but no iron or tea/coffee making. Comfy beds. Pleasant staff but not enough of them
Expected more - if advertised as 4star one would expect 4star
Was more like a lower 3star hotel. Very dated, dark rooms, super uncomfortable beds, bathroom have mould and doors peeling, looks like the bedroom had flooding at one point. Had a 1960/70 style fixed hairdryer in bathroom which doesn’t really work. Provide no glasses or coffee/tea for the rooms and when asked for glasses we were treated extremely unfriiendly. Some staff friendly but some very rude. Breakfast could also be better.
One of the worst hotels I've ever stayed in. The staff are unprofessional and not helpful. The pictures on their website are also very misleading. It is not modern - it looks like it hasn't had an upgrade since the 1970's. The facilities are outdated and ugly. Most bizarrely, the hotel plays extremely loud live music from 9-11pm every night. The music is so loud that we could hear the base clearly in our room that was 2 floors below the speakers. When we called to reception, we were told that nothing could be done as guests like it. When we went upstairs to see, there were no guests. Just a random man playing around on a sound system to no audience. Absolutely terrible. No one enjoys it. The hotel also has 1 central thermostat system which is either on 'winter' or 'summer'. When we visited, it was very humid weather and 18 degrees. When setting the temperature in the room it only blew hot air despite setting it to the lowest setting of 6 degrees. Again, when we called to reception we were told nothing could be done as they deemed it still 'winter' time even though the weather outside was warm. This had an impact on our comfort and sleep. After arguing on the phone with the male reception staff member they eventually agreed to give us a plug in fan. Breakfast is okay but a lot of items run out early morning, and aren't always replaced. So you feel pressure to get there early and rush. Not relaxing. For dinner, they sell an overpriced buffet only (€28 per person). No luxury option. Just an experience that feels like a budget package holiday. We paid £160 per night for this hotel, which is expensive compared to others in the Sao Vincente area. It is NOT worth £160 per night. As I said, it feels very budget and more like a 2* hotel. If you are looking to stay at a hotel in a non-central area, this is fine. There is 1 restaurant outside (pizza shop) and very few taxis available (we tried to book one half a day in advance and were told 4 services were 'fully booked for the day'). There is not a lot to see or do in the area. We ended up driving down the coast each day to Sao Vincente and Seixal every day, which are much nicer areas. The pool at the hotel has no atmosphere. It overlooks a putting green that guests can use. Every time we visited the pool a gardener was trimming the lawn with a strimmer - again, a lot of noise for hours on end, every day. Meaning that there's no real relaxation or consideration for the guests given. I would not recommend staying here to anyone.
Location was good, view and grounds were great. Good room size with balcony. Could do with remodelling(shower instead of bath)
Breakfast should stay open longer, and Indoor Pool, open earlier.
The views from the ocean view are amazing. Beautiful location too. Rooms are older and quite dated yet very clean and a great balcony. We’d stay again for sure.
Located in the quiet area north in Madeira. Nice view from the pool area. Good Aperol.
It was smelly in the corridors and lobby areas. I found a large alive cockroach in the room. Small ants were showing up in the room. This is an old hotel which NEEDS a renovation. Breakfast was basic and not tasty, one of the worst hotel breakfast we have ever experienced. Christmas dinner was expensive and horrible in taste. It was rather toowarm in the room at night (winter season) and not possible to adjust air condition as they have a “central” system for all the rooms. We cancelled stay 3 days before schedule and didnt get refund.
A fantastic location
This hotel needs an upgrade, it had an old fashioned feel and could use some love and attention
Très agréable le personnel très accueillant
The key to open the door was the most interesting thing . The front desk agent has to explain with a sample door knob he had at the front desk to show you how to open your room door .
The place has stunning views, and our room was comfortable and clean, allowing us to have a restful stay. The staff were also very friendly.
Like many people have already written, the hotel needs renovation. Our room was nice, but the corridor (especially the floor carpet), pool, and spa facilities are in horrible condition. I would only return after renovation. The breakfast was also disappointing. Out of the six other places we stayed in Madeira, it was probably the worst in terms of taste and choice.
Nice place with great view of the see and also close to small village. If you are traveling with a car its a good starting point to explore other places of interest and also to have a walking tour.
perhaps a bit change of breakfast, but on other hand everything was availible.
I booked this hotel via Love Holidays as we wanted to visit Madeira, stay in a hotel with a stunning view and a Spa on site. Good:- Stunning view from our bedroom - seriously! Just breathtaking! Restaurant - geared up for all-inclusive (we weren't) but you could still eat from the buffet (decent range & clued up on food allergies) or have the a la carte, Friendly staff. Local stray kitties (if you're into cats) they are just so cute and love a pet. Bad:- While the room was clean and a good size, it was VERY dated - almost out of the 80's - could definitely do with a refresh. The bed was pretty hard too and the pillows were small. There was a fridge in the room but no refreshment facilities ie; kettle, cups, water etc. I managed to borrow a kettle from reception but had to buy my own tea/milk from the local supermarket. The air con didn't work so had to leave the balcony door open, which meant waking up to loads of mozzie bites. The bathroom was clean and good water pressure (apart from the overhead shower) The towels provided were small. Housekeeping came to make the beds and empty bins, but they didn't refresh the towels, so had to ask for new ones. They didn't take away used cups either. I wouldn't necessarily call this a spa hotel either - yes they have an indoor & outdoor pool - but you have to pre book a massage and the therapist comes to the hotel. The sauna you need to request to be put on. So not really a come and go as you please - you have to schedule your sessions. Ugly:- Maybe I should've done a bit more research on the location, but there is literally nothing near the hotel - a cafe is directly opposite, small supermarket 15 min walk away and the hills are crazy! We don't drive so needed to rely on public transport (non existent - maybe one bus a day!) or pay out for taxi's...... at 50-70 euros into Funchal that was quite pricey - you DEFINITELY need a car to stay here! The hotel is popular with all inclusive groups and the elderly (Saga). Overall it was a mixed bag - I've definitely stayed in worse hotels but I have stayed in much better ones too. Maybe the 4 star rating was from years ago as it's probably only worth a 3. When we return to Madeira we won't stay at this hotel again (even if the view was the best!).
View, area, breakfast
Lovely hotel with ocean view. Location is convenient to explore the North (east and west) of the island. Room was very big and cosy, classical style. Excellent breakfast and helpful staff. Very quick and efficient laundry service. Parking available in the garage and/or in close proximity.
The only minus I can think of is the hairdryer, pretty slow I really recommend this place.
Lovely quiet location. Brilliant staff and very helpful. Last minute bookings as our flight was cancelled and hotel staff were so helpful and friendly
Beautiful surroundings. Very quiet location but excellent atmosphere and staff. Helpful with everything we needed
I liked everything, the staff, the room (big, clean, terrace), breakfast (so many choices)! I loved the pool area and the garden.. adored the little cat family living in surrounding bushes. Please keep them safe and fed 🙏 😊 The location and the views from the property are superb! I simply wish i booked a longer stay!
-
The location is amazing , the ocean view from our from was great!
The breakfast was not great, few choices. The room carpet was dirty. The staff was not very nice
The perfect location. The location and the view are phenomenal! Perfect for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse themselves in the peace of nature. The indoor and outdoor pools are in excellent condition and are very pleasant. Breakfast and dinner had plenty of variety.
The hotel needs an upgrade. It's not the first time I've stayed in this hotel and I always complain about the state of the beds. Because they're already old, they're uncomfortable; you can feel the springs. The pillows are also a bit worn. For the price per night, I was expecting better conditions. When we got to the room we noticed that the bedside tables hadn't been cleaned and had dust on them, which isn't pleasant for someone with allergies.
Gorgeous view from property in quiet, north island location. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Food (aside from breakfast buffet) was good and free parking was plentiful
Our initial room was very dated. There were smoke stains on the wall and the bathroom door was cracking, to the point I was worried my mother would slip into it and get large splinters. The hotel generously moved us to one of the renovated rooms which was much better! The whole hotel should be renovated in Oct 2024. When checking in, I would request a renovated room.
We booked the stay because of really good reviews of the hotel and its 4 star rating and what was supposed to be a great breakfast. 1st room we were accommodated in had ants, we got moved to another room where the “AC” was very loud and barely working. The breakfast was very basic and we pretty much ate just the fruit. Overall the hotel is definitely dated and I wouldn’t rate it as 4*. I have to admit that they have a nice ocean view though. We originally booked 2 nights and after the 1st we decided to cancel the 2nd.
Alles was top.
nice pool, beautifull view, spacious rooms staff wasn't very friendly only one key per room old fashioned decoration
Area spa piscinas
Jardim lindos mais com falta de manutenção
We couldn’t believe how wonderful this hotel was. Exactly like all photos, views amazing! Everything is very spacious and very clean. Staff were wonderful. Food was excellant, Everything you could imagine for a buffet breakfast and the a la carte also which wasn’t expensive. Hotel is in the little village, lovely to walk around but not much there. Quiet side of the island. private transfer from airport approx 40 mins. However, bus stop outside the entrance. which can take you to Funchal, very cheaply and you get a lovely journey through the mountains stopping at all the pretty villages. Just allow a couple of hours! The roads and signs around are really good but nearly half the journeys are through very nice tunnels! We didn’t hire a car but went on Jeep Safaris which were great fun. They advise going on guided walks through the Levadas. All in all a wonderful holiday
Stunning view from our bedroom! An ocean view room of the mountains & sea. Our room was big, very clean & comfortable. Great facilities overall.
Our mattress was a bit lumpy & could go with bring upgraded. The surrounding area is v.quiet so a car is definitely needed to get about.
A bit old fashioned but acceptable. Amazing view and garden. Breakfast was much better than expected (we read bad comments from previous guests). Clean and big rooms
Our first room was not great and we were given a free upgrade to a fantastic room. It’s a great place but everything is just out of date.
Only place
Poor hotel, need to renovation
Plenty of facilities like several bars, a restaurant, large pool area. Great view over sea and mountains. They had live entertainment the night I was there. Staff was friendly and helpful. Gave good suggestions for hiking trips.
Rooms are spacious with balcony but a little dated and could easily hear the next room.
Spacious rooms. Immaculately clean. Lovely views. Buffet offered excellent choice and standard. Very quiet. Enjoyed both indoor (occasionally) and indoor (often) pools. Above all the friendly and efficient staff made one feel very welcome. Will be returning (deo volente). Walks around village are, like all Madeira, are partly uphill.
Gorgeous views out to the ocean and mountains. Lovely room and balcony. Staff were very friendly and welcoming.
Shower head not very movable so has caused damage to the door .
I had a great stay at the Monte Mar Palace Hotel, the room is of high quality and very spacious. I particularly wonder how they manage to make the bed linen (embroidered with the hotel logo) so soft. I had a single room (with a view of the mountains) and I wonder how big they can get. The receptionist, Raimundo (who speaks English, French and German!), was really friendly and very helpful, giving me the walking tips I needed, which secured my next leg. Check-in went smoothly and I was immediately offered a pool towel with the recommendation to use the pools. The outdoor pool with sun loungers is beautiful with a paranomic view of the sea. The heated indoor pool with Jacuzzi is spacious. There is also a spa and a lobby area with large comfy sofas and even a mini-golf course, just infront of the pool if you fancy a go. The breakfast buffet is great - with lots of choice. As a side tip, just outside the hotel is Kare's Café, where I had a good portion of beef picado and toasted garlic bread, along with a pint of Carol! It may be a simple café but the service is amazing, the friendly young Maderian waiter speaks perfect English and was really helpful in explaining the drinks and food.
Place, view, personnel - perfect.
Breakfast could have variety - didn't changed in 7 nights.
Hotelli ei todellakaan ollut 4 tähden luokkaa. Huoneessa oli hometta, ja torakka uima-allasosastolla. Ystäväni sai allergisenreaktion homeen vuoksi. Hotellin esitteet antoivat väärän kuvan. Ystävällisesti palauttivat hinnan yhden yöpymisen jälkeen. Muutenkin ei vastannut 4 tähden tasoa. Sijaitsi mutkaisen tien päässä, 6km Sao Vicenteen, kulku vain taxilla. Saimme huoneen Sao Vicentessä. Onneksi tämän kiertomatkan loppun vietimme Riu Palacessa, siihen hotelliin voi aina luottaa.
Great 👍
Nothing. All perfect.
