We actually did not stay at the hotel we originally booked. Due to too few bookings at Hacienda Uxmal Plantation, we were moved to The Lodge instead. In many ways, this worked out very well. The location is excellent, right next to the entrance to Uxmal and very close to the Chocolate Museum, making it possible to enjoy a magical early-morning visit to the archaeological site before it gets busy. The Lodge has a beautiful, relaxed setting, with large wooden buildings surrounding a group of very well-maintained pools. It perhaps does not have quite the historical atmosphere we had expected from the Hacienda, but it is still a very attractive property. Our room was reasonably spacious and had a particularly nice bathroom. There is also quite a bit of small wildlife around the grounds, which adds to the tropical atmosphere. There were relatively few guests during our stay, creating a wonderfully peaceful and relaxed feeling. Staff were generally very nice and friendly. Overall, both the Hacienda and The Lodge have the setting and potential to deliver a genuine five-star experience.
The restaurant is the main question mark. The food at both dinner and breakfast was quite good, but the prices felt higher than justified by the overall restaurant experience. That is unfortunate, because it pulls down what is otherwise a really enjoyable stay. The hotel itself feels close to a five-star experience; the restaurant does not quite reach the same level, even though its pricing suggests that it should. The gap between price and experience is noticeable. There is also an obvious opportunity being missed with the Chocolate Museum next door. It would be great to see the restaurant make more of that connection, perhaps through some distinctive chocolate-based dishes or desserts inspired by the local history of cacao. One practical point: both the Hacienda and The Lodge involve some luggage transportation between reception, rooms and the different buildings, which is worth being aware of if travelling with larger bags.
Goede ligging naast ingang site Uxmal
Ontbijt was zeer beperkt.
It was perfect one night stay, wish to stay longer. The hacienda is amazing, clean with historical value of all the persons staying there in the past…we had a spacious room with panoramic windows…and in the mornig we had a free ride around the property…delicios breakfast…we could stay in the room till 1 pm and were be able to swimm in the pool after the visit of arheological site…higly recommended
The hacienda is just fabulous! Wonderful architecture and design, serene scenery, very kind staff, location just 5 mins by foot from Uxmal archeological site! Breakfast was also splendid! Loved every minute of our stay!
Great staff. Great facilities. A bit of a walk to the location for breakfast.
We've stayed here in the past as well. Lovely piece of history, very comfortable rooms and the staff is very welcoming.
Sadly, the hotel did not have a lot of guests as a tour had canceled, so the onsite restaurant was closed. Breakfast was included and we went to the Lodge at Uxmal. Which was fine as it is right at the entrance to Uxmal.
The hacienda is magnificent, the hotel restaurant is very delicious , and the stuff like Victor and Luis are very nice and friendly.
Nada.
Location of the hotel is great - just across the street from the Mayan site. The history of the hacienda and decor is fun to read about and experience. The staff were friendly and polite.
Sadly, we had a lot of complaints about our stay. I wanted to like this place but did not. We had booked a particular room (at a premium rate) and were informed a day before arrival that was not available. We were given a lesser room and we asked for the price to be lowered, but were given dinner vouchers instead. The reason for the room switch was because a large conference was taking place at the hotel. I’m guessing the conference people took “our” booked room. The conference people stayed up until midnight that night with a loudspeaker, music and games - it was incredibly loud. It seemed clear that the conference came first in the hotel’s estimation and other guests just had to put up with it. I think the hotel should have emailed all guests who had reservations at the time that the conference booked, and informed them that this would be going on so they could decide whether to cancel or not. One day’s notice did not allow for a change in plans. In addition, the TV remote had no batteries so we couldn’t use it, the fridge was not plugged in and the cord was too short anyway, and the AC was possessed - it came on and off regardless of what the control pad was set at. The hotel is definitely living off past glories of hosting famous guests. It’s a decent midrange place but hugely overpriced.
The staff is wonderful and the location for visiting Uxmal is great. The hacienda has so much history and the grounds are beautiful.
The rooms need a redo for the price. The faucet in our bathroom was wonky. The pillows are old and lumpy, and the mattresses could use a topper to soften the feel.
Beautiful grounds, incredible staff, delicious fruit juices, lovely pool, ideal location by Mayan ruins
Prachtige omgeving.
Rafael was great. The grounds are beautiful and the pool area and bar are very inviting.
Very dated. Beyond the hacienda style, which is fine, the wifi is patchy, bathroom is very dated, no hand towels, TV is the size of my laptop screen, fridge didn't work. We arrived at 630pm and it felt abandoned (besides ourselves and Rafael). Restaurant was closed ( but we were offered to open it).
The staff
No smoking area on the property I disliked being shown a kerb under a tree to have my after dinner coffee and cigarette
Just wonderful.
Maybe a bit too expensive.
Pool
Beds too small
Location and ambience, and service - Versaim is the best!
It’s an aged property with lots of tradition, but the bathroom could be upgraded. My wife didn’t want to use the bathtub for example, which was one of the filters that I used to chose the property (she is English and love baths).
This is a destination site in terms of being worth spending the extra money to stay here when you visit Uxmal, its historic and luxurious
Nothing
Beautiful property well situated to lots of attractions (pyramids, planetarium, eco-park/museum) but the restaurant staff ranges from mostly disinterested to somewhat dishonest (pretty obviously did not bring back correct change, helping herself to a very nice tip) and as other travelers have noted elsewhere, the restaurant is overpriced for what you get. Clearly needs better management if staff is this lackluster.
3 min walk from uxmal site
We originally booked this hotel but upon arrival (at night, in the dark), we were informed that the hotel was closed and we had to move to the hotel across the street. Which was no issue for us but it would have been nice to be informed upfront. We also got different reasonings why it was closed. One staff member said it was due to maintenance. The other staff member said it was cause the hotel only had 1 booking for that night.
Located next to the Uxmal ruins. Only a three minute walk to the entrance. The pools were nice. Easy parking. Note: When we booked, we thought we were staying at the Hacienda Uxmal Plantation and Museum. We were actually put in the Uxmal Lodge which must be a sister hotel. That was fine, because the Uxmal Lodge is closer to the ruins. It makes the reviews confusing though, as some are for the Lodge and some are for the Hacienda which I think is the more upscale hotel.
Never stayed in a hotel before where you had to pay for a cup of coffee. The coffee cost 50 pesos and you had to walk to the restaurant to get it. The worst part was that the coffee was awful. For the sake of our marriage, coffee is must for my wife in the morning! Wifi wasn't working for the two days we were there. So check ahead if you need to work remote. Also, didn't appreciate being approached as we were sitting outside of our hotel room and asked whether we were guests just because we didn't order breakfast. Towels need to be replaced.
At the Uxmal archeological site. Big hotel. Our room (suite) was huge and comfortable. The pool was very pleasant. The restaurant of their sister property was just a few minutes walk.
Check in could’ve been more welcoming.
Beautiful historical hotel with gorgeous grounds. Nice pool and bar. Good food. Tremendously easy access to the Uxmal ruins.
Only breakfasts on site - all other meals must be found offsite. AC in every room struggles to keep up in 106 deg heat but largely due to older building and room styles
Great location and quiet. Very close to the Uxmal ruins.
Terrible breakfast. The bread was several days old and rock hard. The water in the pool was dirty. The lock to our door was broken and we could not lock our door. The hotel is dated.
It was magnificent to spend time at such a museum hotel. We enjoyed it a lot. Very convenient for Uxmal visit early in the morning.. The choco Museo was also a pleasant visit .
Indeed, the breakfast wasn’t worth it and there was no dinner options. The vino blanco was terrible.
The building itself and the garden is fantastic. Absoluetly stunning. We enjoyed the pool in the evening. The ruins are very close.
Not even a small fridge in the room. The bar and the kitchen is extremely expensive.
The place to stay when visiting Uxmal, which is a 5min walk away. The pool is a great place to relax after visiting the ruins early morning. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. Near by there is also the chocolate museum.
The location next to the Temple Uxmal. The pool was very nice and relaxing. The breakfast was good (eggs, pancakes, fruits, cereals..) even if very expensive (21euros) but I guess this is the price to pay in the middle of the jungle to have pancakes !
No restaurant inside the hotel for lunch and dinner and the restaurant next to the hotel is very expensive (41€for two pasta dishes and two bottles of water). All the restaurants next to the place seems to suck.
The hacienda is very nice and I enjoyed the lush gardens and the large pool where we played with my 5 years old son. The room was big and the bathroom as well. The beds were on the hard side but this is very common in Mexico. I was happy that the room had a mini fridge and a safe to leave our belongings. Waking up to the sounds of birds was lovely. The location was also very convenient to visit Uxmal and the Chocolate Museum. This hotel was great for a two night stay.
The restaurant of the hotel only serves breakfast and for anything else, you have to go to the entrance of Uxmal, at the Lodge for meals at another time of the day. The staff at the hotel was at its minimum despite being during Easter Week - supposedly high season. The pool could have been cleaner, it was full of leaves and flowers falling from the trees. Food at the restaurant (on the other side of the street) is so-so and expensive. Unfortunately, they have a captive client-base and basically no competition, which doesn't help quality. We however enjoyed the food and the service at the Pickled Onion restaurant right outside of Santa Elena (about 15 minutes driving).
Great location within walking distance of Uxmal ruins. We also spent time walking in the plantation around the hacienda. Dinners were excellent at the eco lodge nearby. An unexpected pleasure was the choco museum and planetario video show. Lovely to read the history of the hacienda and see pics of famous guests in the 60's and 70's including princess grace and lots of european royalty.
Breakfast was not up to the hacienda standards.
All wondrous! Lovely pool, big rooms, quiet and great views..just shame no evening restaurant on site..
This hotel is perfect from all points of views. We stayed in the same room, where once Indira Ghandi stayed. Very spacious, very beautiful even with stained glass windows in the room. Beautiful garden with birds, pool, parking. Within walking distance from Uxmal archeological site.
Nothing to improve. This is a landmark hotel with history.
The room and the wakening with the sounds of the birds. It was awesome!!
The price of the food. It seems pricey.
Nice pool, rooms with big windows to see the birds & comfortable beds. Staff was very friendly.
It is a hop and a skip to Uxmal
The bathroom was a bit musty and the whole place is slightly faded glory but it couldn’t be better for visiting the site
Real mexican atmosphere
Close location to Uxmal and Choco museum.
Price performance.
Excellent location and atmosphere. In walking distance to Ruins of Uxmal and next to very interesting Choco Story museum. While it is a historical hotel it has the atmosphere of a former hacienda surrounded by farm land.
Warm water did not work at times. Probably a common problem in this location.
It was close to Uxmal and very exciting that Jackie Kennedy stayed there in 1968 and other people like Grace Kelly.
It needs some paint to bring it back to its prime.
The property is very beautiful, so no complaints there. However, the WiFi never worked and the room had a TV with only two channels and both had some much noise that they were impossible to watch. Due to the limited dining choices on the property (they only serve breakfast from 7-10 am), we had to eat once across the highway at a very overpriced location. If you have a car, I would recommend driving to Santa Elena or Ticul to find dining options.
Beautiful location with a lot of history. Nature was well taken care of and we had a great view from our superior room.
The breakfast was a disaster. Heavily overpriced and terrible staff who couldnt perform basic things like serving hot tea or remembering what you ordered, even when we remembered them several times. In the next village there are several better priced options.
Excellent location across from Uxmal ruins. Very interesting history of the Hacienda as well, including famous people such as Queen Elizabeth who stayed there! Breakfast was delicious and pool cocktails were also great. Grounds are beautiful and filled with colorful birds. Staff was accommodating. Don't expect uber modern luxury.
Walking distance from Uxmal archeological site. Very helpful staff and wonderful building. I would have loved it if there was an option for dinner , but the Lodge which is nearby covers that need. Would definitely recommend
Beautiful old building with lots of character. Large rooms with fantastic picture windows.
The fantastic picture windows were filthy, inside and out. The entrance lobby was dark, reception was not immediately obvious but tucked around the corner. Staff were very poor taking our payment - entering dollars instead of pesos (so thousands!!! Bank fortunately de lined the payment). Breakfast was appalling. They charged around £13/14 for a couple of slices of fruit, cold stale toast, lukewarm juice (no orange) and a basket (3) of stale “pastries”.
Nice hacienda style building. Some of the rooms have hosted famous people which is fun to read about. The pool area is nice and a great spot to take a break after sightseeing at Uxmal. We got a large room - which was quite large, but a little dark.
Bathroom seems like it needs to be updated. The spa tub smelled when the jets were turned on. Hot water took a long time to come through to the fixtures. No dinner on site (maybe just the season), so you need to go offsite. Breakfast was decent onsite. Bar service was very relaxed - maybe a little slow, but there was not many people there, so not really an issue unless you are in a rush.
It was a luxurious hotel without the price. The setting had so much history and displayed it everywhere. It was extremely clean and spacious. The staff was attentive and helped get us a guide. Great location next to Uxmal and Museo de chocolate.
The location, nothing more to like.
Most disappointing stay during our 3 weeks travels in Mexico. This was the most expensive night we had in Mexico by far and unfortunately the worst at the same time. Hotel is extremely outdated and everything feels like staying at your grandma's house, in a bad way. WiFi does not work on the rooms, shower only cold water, food extremely overpriced because no alternatives. There are no nice areas to sit, everything is just "fancy" old wooden furniture that is really uncomfortable. Shower and beds were not very clean. Windows to hotel area and street can't be closed (only moscito screen) so it is really noisy. No idea where the good reviews are from. There was also no Hancienda feel about this hotel at all. It feels like your standard run of the mill hotel with a boring pool. This hotel is really only for people who are impressed by old furniture, the fact royalty stayed here a hundred years ago (nothing changed since then) and if you want to experience sleeping in a museum. You will definitely not be impressed. Additionally there is a weird pride of the owners on owning this and the Uxmal property for 400 years... Guess who they took it from. The bible greeting you in the room tells it all. We asked our guide in Uxmal about the family and he told us how damaging the owners have been for the people and Uxmal site over the last hundreds of years. But hey you can watch a Jaguar in a small cage on the property in the chocolate museum... What do Jaguars in cages have to do with the history of chocolate? You tell me. Please do yourself a favour and take a different accommodation in the area. There are some only a 10 minute drive away. Luckily we only stayed one night, we disliked this hotel passionately, especially for this price. I would only compare it in quality to our 50 USD a night stays in Mexico, which had hot water and WiFi at least. Vote with your money and go somewhere else.
It is a beautiful antique hotel
Cold shower, no restaurant for dinner, breakfast took 1 hour to be served. Very expensive for such a poor service
This hotel is in a great location, right across from the entrance to Uxmal. It is attractive and very comfortable with a good breakfast. Access is good for older people. Staff were welcoming and very helpful
Not sure.
A beautiful setting and walking distance from the Uxmal ruins. Beautiful place by itself with a lot of history. We stayed in the Ghandi suite with jacuzzi and starlight view. Just wonderful. Loved waking up with sound of many different birds.
Simple breakfast. For dinner you have to go elsewhere.
What a wonderful weekend! The serenity and beauty of this old gem brought us back for a third visit. We love staying in this historic hacienda and beyond that, the staff is very friendly and extraordinarily helpful; the pool is amazing; beds are very comfy; and the breakfast is yummy. We also enjoyed two very good dinners across the road at the restaurant next to the Uxmal ruins. Dont neglect to ask for Luis to guide a plantation tour for you…. Or Orlando to guide you through the ruins. These two are both very knowledgeable and their English is excellent.
I wondered why they are storing furniture at the top of the grand staircase. Not a good look. And the “museum” room in the hacienda needs some help.
The hotel is beautiful and well maintained. We enjoyed the display of history throughout the hotel. It was very tranquil.
The limited food options.
Loved everything about this hotel. Service was exceptional, warm and helpful. Spacious, lovely room and grounds. Enjoyed reading about the history of the hacienda. Especially appreciated that we could walk a very short distance to Uxmal ruins so we were able to beat the crowds. Breakfast at the hotel had a great selection. Had to walk a short distance for lunch and dinner but enjoyed the food at both of the meals. Highly recommend this hotel.
Great location, just a short walk to Uxmal ruins. The Hacienda is beautiful and it's easy to relax as it's so peaceful. It feels like you're taking a step back in time. Staff were friendly and helpful. We didn't use the restaurants as they were pricey and ratings weren't great. Instead we drove into Muna, a buzzy little town 15 minutes drive north. Found great street food there.
Lovely hacienda with beautiful swimming pool. The setting is fantastic, you're surrounded by trees and lots of birds, not to mention the iguanas. A haven of tranquility. We loved our room with it's traditional slatted windows for ventilation and rocking chairs outside the door. Excellent location for making an early start to visit Uxmal and a fabulous place to return to afterwards.
Bar and breakfast were quite expensive. If you don't have a car there's no evening meal option, other than going to The Lodge which was overpriced and not great cooking.
The hotel is super atmospheric, it's very quiet and chill. We wanted to visit the Uxmal Archeological Zone first in the morning and for that it's perfect - 5 mins walk. We had the ruins for us, no one else was there at 8 am - and that was priceless. Good price.
Very limited food options. Breakfast is ridiculously overpriced: 260 pesos for a couple of toast and some fruits. In the evening there's only one restaurant nearby - that is also very overpriced.
Extraordinary place - beautiful, historic, comfortable
The lack of a dinner option was inconvenient and the recommendation that we go to the nearby partner restaurant was not helpful - it was VERY expensive and not so good. Once we discovered the Pickled Onion in nearby Saint Elena life was good.
Beautiful site. Right adjacent to Archeological Park.
This place was magical. You could feel the history! The room was beautiful and well appointed with high quality finishings. It was calm and relaxing, and also fun for our children to quietly play in the pool which also featured a nice bar. Breakfast was delicious. The location is also amazing - close to the archaeological site (which also has a light and sound show at night!) and the chick story museum which exceeded our expectations- we stayed 2 nights but could easily have stayed longer! We loved it!
There is no restaurant on site and only one option really for lunch and dinner across the road close to the archaeological site. They tried to push a 100 USD buffet on us, but in the end we were able to dine a la carte.
Breakfast was the only disappointment And the lack of a restaurant on the premises
We had a cocktail and there were no snacks
It was peaceful and clean
Lovely grounds. Old school hacienda.
"Off season" meant no restaurant or bar on site. The pool was open thankfully. Was not informed prior to booking.
Beautiful hotel in perfect location for exploring Uxmal. We loved it so much we stayed a second night ! Of a bygone era with wide tiled walkways, wooden furniture and large, well equipped rooms. We had a room on the 3rd floor with an outlook over the gardens and loved it.
Just wish there was a restaurant on site
An absolutely stunning property, wonderful staff . We can from Australia with no car and could walk easily to the most special archeological site , the fabulous chocolate museum and restaurant. The grounds are so beautiful, the history of who has stayed there are amazing also . If you take time to talk to staff you will discover amazing things .
Not enough time there ! Not having a car to do more
Great accommodation if you want to visit the ruins of Uxmal. Nice and clean in a really nice surroundings, worth exploring the history of the hacienda while you are there! Friendly staff and amazing sleep with the silence around. You can be sure to walk through the area of the ruins as one of the first ones!
The hotel (or recommended) restaurant which is the only one in a walking distance for dinner. Read the reviews before you go or just get dinner elsewhere if you have a car.
