Lots of space with separate seating area. The en-suite was spacious
Nothing
The location was good in relation to the town
There were 2 beds in the room making it cramped. The toilet and shower were in a cupboard no room room to move in the shower and the toilet door did not shut
Location, street parking and the fact it was a pub, restaurant and hotel.
Very tired, and poorly maintained. Staff could improve, but evening waiter very good.
Good location Easy check in Pleasant staff Spacious room The young lady who served breakfast was great, she worked very hard, taking orders and cooking the breakfast.
Everything was good
Spacious room. Good breakfast. Excellent bar. Dog friendly
The toilet was called bit of a squeeze.
An annual stay of one night - staying over for a golf day. Been coming for years and will hopefully come again for several years. Somewhat dated, but it is an old building, and some of the furnishings are tired - but at the end of the day, this is a pub with rooms, and for the price, it's OK. Clean and comfortable. Breakfast maybe not quite as good as in the past, but again OK.
Always a great night. Comfortable and welcoming with a great breakfast
Perfect stopover, good room, good food and friendly staff Would stop there again if in that area
Nothing really to dislike
Staff were very friendly and helpful. Although looking slightly dated the room we had (Room 7) was large and very comfortable. Very good value for money
Early time for breakfast

Extremely welcoming from the start and very cheap beer!
Needs some TLC and understaffed at breakfast but a fantastic building and well worth the price.
Great location, value for money and very clean.
Very friendly check in. Friendly staff. Lovely breakfast.. Great location.5
Nothing.
Location was on the main street, so central and convenient for shops and market. Large bedroom with lots of room, wardrobe space, tv, tea and coffee,. We had a family room so it had an extra single bed ( we booked a double, but no complaints!) Private bathroom outside the bedroom door, but in private little porch/ hall. The bar downstairs was well stocked and real ales available. Breakfast had a menu of the usual, with cold items on a self service basis. Host was lovely as was the gentleman who checked us in. Was only staying for one night, but very satisfied.
Decor was a little dated in the bedroom and the door and floorboards were very creaky ( old building) No separate shower cubicle, a shower connected to the taps. ( I imagine awkward if you were tall as head would definitely touch the sloping ceiling in the recess while showering) This didn't really bother us and it did not impact our lovely stay.
Quirky layout
Staff and food were great.our room particularly the bed was very comfortable.
Paint work was tired and dirty in places. Furniture in bedroom was dusty particularly spindles of chairs giving a neglected appearance.
Such a great location in this great little town. Twin bedded room is a bit of a find these days so that was appreciated.
I know it’s a very old property but it was a bit shabby. We were only staying one night, though, so it didn’t matter too much. Banisters going up to the room felt sticky and dirty and carpets were a bit grubby. Beds were really uncomfortable and only one pillow each. Bedding was minimal which meant it was chilly. Only one hand towel was provided. Couldn’t find the WiFi password anywhere. Breakfast was ok with a good choice of cooked dishes (by the one member of staff on duty) but the hot drinks machine was a mystery without clear instructions. I guess £97 a night is pretty much par for the course these days but I didn’t rate it as value for money.
Great stay lovely big room, comfy bed and a great breakfast. Staff so friendly and helpful, plenty of beers to choose from in the pub and the food is very good. It is on a bank so be careful if you have mobility issues. Other than that great location, within the town bars and restaurants all within 3/4 mile. Recommend the Three horse shoes in Galgate for food and the Blue Bell pub at the bottom of the bank, lovely pub, lovely friendly people, although you wouldn't go wrong stopping at the Old well for either. Thank you to the Old Well for a pleasant stay.
The one downside the shower wasn't very good hot but not much power, but it didn't spoil anything.
Great location.
The location
The bathroom was dreadful so bad we did not shower. Stairs up to room were awful.
Great Location,really Good breakfast,good service.
The whole experience we had such and evening meals there the room was excellent the staff are superb tried to book the next weekend but fully booked i can understand why definitely return as soon as possible
Spacious room overlooking high street
Quaint little inn on a lovely town street
Slept quite well
Decor a little tired, but it is a very old building
Quaint
Easy to locate, place to store bicycles.
Very dated, in need of major overhaul, not overly clean.
Handy central location. Excellent choice of real ale. Very good Indian menu among the usual options
Nice old property
Big room and excellent fan.
Location and odd electrics, a pull cord above the bed to switch on the overhead light.
Toned down version………. The Olde Well – Plenty of Character… and Then Some The Olde Well certainly has character, although some of it may have been there for rather longer than intended. The first thing you notice is the abundance of signs and reminders. Everywhere you look there’s another helpful instruction – “Don’t forget to leave your key”, beer prices, and various other notices. By the time I’d reached my room, I felt I’d completed a treasure hunt. The building is clearly old, which is part of its charm, but the rooms and décor could really do with a little TLC. It’s one of those places where a freshen-up would go a long way. My room had a couple of unexpected features. There seemed to be a dip in the floor hidden beneath the carpet, and the small step out of the bathroom caught me out more than once. Combined with the low door frame, it certainly kept me on my toes! One fascinating piece of history is that during the First World War the inn was used to billet troops, and the landlords of the time were reportedly fined for providing substandard mattresses and accommodation. Lying in bed, I couldn’t help but wonder whether my mattress had been carefully preserved as part of the building’s historical collection. It certainly had a well-loved feel to it. Overall, if you’re looking for a spotless, modern hotel, this probably isn’t the place for you. But if you enjoy quirky old pubs, a bit of history, good-value beer, and have a sense of humour, you’ll certainly come away with a story or two. With a little investment and some TLC, The Olde Well could become every bit as memorable for the right reasons as it already is for the entertaining ones.
The staff deserve a special mention. They worked incredibly hard throughout our stay and, despite appearing slightly overwhelmed at times, remained friendly, cheerful and did their very best. Any shortcomings certainly didn’t feel like they were down to a lack of effort. Breakfast also required a degree of patience. It’s definitely not the place to be if you’re in a hurry, but if you’ve got time on your hands then great. On the plus side, at £2.93 a pint on mondays and tuesdays, the beer was excellent value and probably the highlight of the stay.
Location is great and breakfast was perfect.
Shower could be improved in the bathroom.
everything, especially breakfast [well done young lady]
We loved it! A little tired room but we love this very homely, quirky feeling, everyone was very nice and warm, simple kindness. Loved outsoors garden and live music evening as they have them every Thursday nights. We were with a baby and everyone was sweet. Great brekkie, too! Just lovely, definitely will be back.
Lovely stay in a pub full of quirk and character. Family room was a great size and had everything we needed for a comfortable nights sleep. Breakfast was lovely and the pub had lots of toys for our 3 year old meaning we could actually enjoy a drink while he was occupied.
No car park but on street parking worked fine for us.
Massive bedroom. Terrific curry for dinner.

Food was good and also a good price Drinks reasonably priced

Room was lovely. Breakfast was good. Lots of space. Very well located and easy to park for free on the town market place.
Bathroom is a little bit tired/could do with some tlc but everyone very welcoming.
Breakfast was really nice, staff were really friendly and was a nice clean venue.
It said there was live entertainment but there wasn't on the weekend we stayed
Staff were friendly, beer garden at the rear was a nice extra. Rooms were a good size and clean. It was hot when we were staying and they had put a fan in the room to help move air around.
Can't think of anything
It is an old building with loads of History, and character, I love the furniture in the rooms, and the staff are fantastic, the bar also has a good range of real ales, and the food is lovely. and it has a beer garden that backs up against the castle wall.Dog friendly too.
You have to choose your breakfast times, but it really wasn't a problem.
The bedroom was gorgeous! Very spacious, and like stepping into a slice of history or a boutique hotel. It was well decorated with a lot of original features such as panelling, an original fitted cupboard, shutters and sliding windows that have not been painted shut (unlike so many others that have) so you can open them. The bed was a massive King-sized bed and was so comfortable, and there was plenty of storage and a full-length mirror. The bathroom was spacious and in keeping with the period of the room's decor. The hot tap was constantly on and couldn't be turned off, and the toilet bowl was a bit tired, but I didn't mind. The staff were great, and it was very easy to come and go as you please. Free parking on Rd.
Breakfast was set for 8 am or 8.30 am. More flexibility would have been better. The quality of breakfast I would give 8 out of 10. On Sunday the bar had closed so we never got to sample the bar area, but it is a sleepy village feel. I didn't use Wifi but the passcode would have been useful in the bedroom.
Breakfast was lovely Beds clean and comfotable
Stains in bedspread and carpets. Whole place needs a good clean. Dirty, Sticky floors and very dirty paintwork. Nice beer garden as in flowers but garden furniture falling to bits and covered in bird poo
Nice old fashioned inn in a lovely little town good breakfast
Parking is limited and the bar closes early
The bar
Excellent position. Lovely staff. Wonderful breakfast. Lovely clean room and comfortable bed.
The pub and the rooms are VERY tired. Breakfast took about 40 minutes to arrive after ordering both mornings.
Very friendly clean and easy going.Food is good too.

From the moment you walked through the door you couldn't fault the staff. They were all very helpful & friendly. We ate in the bar in the evening & the Indian food was delicious. Breakfast was freshly cooked & the staff were attentive & on hand if needed.
A comfy chair in the bedroom would be good 😊
The most haunted place I have ever been...can't explain my experience
The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. The main room was extremely large. There was an en-suite bathroom also very large. The decor is very quaint.
Nothing really - all fine.
Perfect location. Our room far exceeded our expectations. Both the room and the bathroom were huge!
The bed head was rather uncomfortable.
Nice wee pub in the town centre
Staying in the attic room
Clean comfortable Value for money
A little dated
Very large, comfortable and tastefully furnished bedroom on 3rd floor overlooking the Main Street. Very light and airy and quiet. Excellent full English breakfast included with great coffee. Free 24-hr street parking outside on a first-come, first-served basis. Short walk to town centre (uphill) so very convenient for shops and attractions. Short walk downhill to riverside walk.
The bed was quite hard so not a comfortable nights sleep unless laying flat on your back. 4 flights of stairs to room so a bit difficult with main luggage.
Location excellent for our needs. Food was good quality, plentiful and hot. Our room was spacious and comfortable. Relaxed and friendly atmosphere
Unfortunately no shower in the room. Rooms appear a little tired and in need of redecoration. Our evening meal was late being served as the barman forgot to put the order through but once he realised it was quickly sorted and delivered.
Great find for an overnight stay on our way to Scotland. Lovely staff, massive room with very comfy bed and good food. Nice little town and some good walks locally.
There is no car park but we parked right out front on the road so not an issue. It is all quite dated and old school but we quite like that. If you’re looking for a bougie pub stay it’s probably not for you!
Lovely big room, beds and staff
No
Great location and really good value
We were right on the front and it was very noisy with the traffic
Great location, parking available right at the front of the hotel, delicious breakfast and a huge room
Squeaky bed
Quirky but great with it. Loved the character. Quiet, clean and very comfortable. Great bar and fantastic breakfast the next day. Would definitely stay again if passing.

The parking_ but parking was 5 mins away
Fab location, we were in room 3 and it was huge. The beds were super comfy and the staff we met were lovely :)

Location
Great l8cation, staff super friendly, and great atmosphere in the bar.
Nothing really, great value for money.
Lovely hotel, perfect location, staff all friendly, breakfast was lovely, room nice and clean, quiet room, comfortable bed plenty on street parking
Shower could have been more powerful but did not spoil my stay
Centrally located, a lovely big room, lots of history to the building and surroundings, great value.
The bathroom could do with a refresh, but otherwise fantastic.
The staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly. Plenty of tea and coffee in the rooms including decaff etc. Breakfast was cooked fresh and served piping hot and plentiful. We thought it was good value. We had a big room.
The location
I was staying there to take part in a local parkrun which started at 9.00 I was notified Breakfast which was included in the cost was started at 8.30am. I did ask if any possibility of a light breakfast just toast and cereal earlier but the best they could do was 8.20am I wasn't happy with this and in the end didn't bother. The room was old fashioned carpet especially the one on the stairs grubby. Bathroom round the pipes area a bit grubby. Shower wasn't that hot All in all it was not good value for money
Basically get what you pay for, bedroom very large, solid furniture, all very clean but could do with some TLC re decorating. Breakfast - good choice. Can’t really fault it for the price
Could have done with some radiators working in the bedroom first thing in the morning but there was a portable heater
Brilliant location in town. Fantastic staff.. Old and quirky! Building. I found the bed uncomfortable for me. But otherwise a great stay and lovely breakfast.
The bed was too hard and pillow uncomfortable.
Great location amongst the antique shops in Barnard Castle. Traditional pub with quirky rooms, we were given the top room with nice views over the rooftops. Clean and fresh with all the usual accompaniments. Staff helpful and friendly. It is an old building with some steepish stairs and low beams which is charming and to be expected! Plenty of free on street parking close by and a very short walk down to the lovely riverside walks. Good breakfast provided, standard fare well prepared, no issues there. Overall a pleasant stay and would book again with no hesitation.
Double room was amazing, quirky but had all mod cons, fab location just off the main street. Lovely beer garden at the rear
It's not double glazing so you do hear all passing traffic
Lovely people for is we had Indian food was lovely
Just one thing the sausage easent cooked properly in the morning looked very pale like it had not been in the pan but thats just a small thing
The place is quirky. The room was very spacious and very comfortable. We had a good stay here.
Friendly staff, food was very good ,location was good near all things of interest .
Could have better pillows and an extra bed cover .
Quaint
Uncomfortable and shabby
Very friendly and welcoming staff.
It was all good
The pressure in the shower could have been a little bit more There was dust on the lamp stands
Centre of town.
Mattress hard and uncomfortable. They provided only one small hand towel for showering — was that a mistake??
Very friendly staff, friendly bar / pub with good food and beer. Unmodernised but clean and roomy bedroom.
