Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Lovely, cosy and peaceful atmosphere. Very comfortable beds and pillows, and excellent, friendly staff. We were kindly given our room two hours before check-in, which was much appreciated. The breakfast was excellent and delicious. The only problem was that my son wanted even more! 😊 Which probably says everything about how good it was. We really enjoyed our stay and would happily return.
The staff were exceptional, couldn't have been better.
Nothing negative to say at all.
It was an older building, old school style operation and was excellent in providing the service under those circumstances
Lovely hotel , lovely breakfast, great location
Found the bed very hard and pillows hard.
Location was great. Room was lovely
Having to pay for parking when diners/drinkers/bookers with hotel direct don't. Booking.com should make it clearer. The sauteed potatoes at breakfast were 'new potatoes' rather than chopped fried potatoes which are more usual!
Lovely building and very helpful staff
Food quite pricey for small portions
Really relaxing place with friendly and helpful staff and a great homely feel to it. Superb meals in the dining-room.
Die Lage war super.
Die Zimmer sind nicht entsprechend dem was gezeigt und beschrieben wird. Da reicht es nicht, wenn man im Marco Polo Reiseführer erwähnt wird.... Definitiv nicht empfehlenswert.
Location was perfect as central as could be! Bonus that the car park available for 24 hours for £8. Staff were excellent, friendly and helpful.
I didn't have any complaints.
This hotel has been a place of stay for my mother and grandmother for many years and we revisited to have a lovely weekend away. Everything was exceptional and we will return . Thankyou to all the lovely staff who looked after us , they were really kind and super professional.
The heat of the room but couldn’t be avoided this summer .
Location is great, has parking
Breakfast was small, no lift,
All the staff were friendly and helpful. The food was excellent (dinner and breakfast). The hotel has character - it's a lovely old building in the centre of the town, so brilliantly placed. Good on site car parking. The room, though technically a single, was a good size, the bed was probably a double size anyway, and everything was clean. One particular but small thing - there was a decaf tea bag in the room tea and coffee pack, which I thought was very thoughtful.
The only thing was the unreliable WiFi - I resorted to hotspotting off my phone. I get that this is difficult in a large old building, but it's a bit of a pity as I was working on my laptop in my room. When it did work, eg in the public areas of the hotel, it was perfectly fine. This is the only reason I've given this an 8, otherwise it would be an easy 9 or 10 out of 10.
Very comfortable stay with tasty food and helpful staff
Traditional style and good quality catering.
It’s a little tired in places and the bath needed a good clean particularly around the area your head encounters the scum rim!
Location, staff n breakfast
No air con. Cleanliness of room.
We always stay at the Bedford Hotel when visiting family in the area so good location. The staff are all very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The bedroom was very clean and comfortable. A wide variety of food is available and in our opinion always cooked to perfection. The whole hotel is good value for money and the cleanliness excellent.
Close to everything, clean and well kept, full of history.
A lot of noise from room next-door and above,
Food was excellent.
Smallest shower I've ever seen. Overpriced.
Visited with elderly mother who is coeliac at 2.30pm, when we were told meals were no longer served. Ordered 2 x savoury teas - scones with cheese, marmite butter & relish, 1 of which was required to be gluten-free, which was possible as gf scones available, explained that marmite butter was not gf, possibly relish also may not be gf(barley vinegar). Waited 20 mins, order brought to table by a middle-aged waitress. Mother tried to slice scone, fell apart with solid middle. We showed the waitress who agreed it was not acceptable & took it away. Waited for my mother’s order, brought by a tall young male, now with 2 small scones. My mum sliced into the scones, which were exactly like the previous large scone - crumbling, powdery & solid in the centre - this can happen when over heated in microwave, we know. Now my mum had her order, I cut into my savoury scone, which wasn’t properly cooked in the middle - uncooked dough. My mum’s plate was missing any butter, The 2 slices of cheese on each serving was the thinnest they could be, with my mum’s with the outer rind of the end of the cheese, which meant it couldn’t be eaten. Politely complained to the young man, who very brusquely removed the order & we asked him, politely, that we have the cost returned. He gestured to the bar, left, without any apology & without any grace at all. My mum went to the bar where she was given a refund with no apology. Service around us we observed was chaotic. People were asking about orders being waited for, tables were uncleared, earlier for some time there was only 1 person manning the bar, so people were waiting for some time to be served. Gf scones are easy to make. Anyone with a genuine dietary requirement shouldn’t need to eat crap. Chefs, try your food before serving it. If making gf food is beyond you, buy decent ones in - M&S are ok, or I’ll happily give you a simple fool-proof recipe! Train your staff not to slam down orders and if grace doesn’t come naturally to them, teach them that when things go wrong, how to make them right. Waiting staff aren’t responsible for what comes from the kitchen, but as someone who’s worked in catering & hospitality, much can be forgiven when staff are apologetic & gracious. Price point - £9 for a ‘savoury tea’ - a scone, 2 wafer-thin slices of cheese, a weird slice of gelatinous ‘marmite butter’ & spoonful of pickle is value? If it’s that price, make it good. I was considering a 2-night stay later in the year with family. A friend was considering the hotel as a wedding venue next spring. A simple order so badly executed doesn’t bode well!
Tolle Lage, charmant eingerichtet
The garden , quality vibe , the staff, books etc
Having to carry drinks down to the garden
Good location and ambient furnishings
Creaky flooring in the room and having to pay for parking
Having to move room as the toilet was broken and the second room had a wasp problem.
Some of the rooms need an update as windows were painted over so would not open. Bath rooms and shower very small.
Cooked breakfast was poor value unless you had full English breakfast.
Room was ridiculously hot. We had to change room. Ineffective fan Had not been informed that there was a charge for parking until checked out.
Lots of space to sit - inside and outside. Good breakfast. Good location.
Water in the room was tap water in a jug - it should have been bottled mineral water. There were two fans in the room but they were noisy and not very powerful - invest in quieter, more effective fans. A fridge should be in all rooms. The outside temperature was the high 20s/low 30s - very hot!
Would say that the customer service is always mixed. But I have found that I tend to get a very grumpy/blunt attitude from some of the male staff and find it unwelcoming. It’s a shame as they have the best beer gardens in Tavistock.
Staff were friendly, room was great ,bed really comfortable Would definitely stay again
Central Location, awesome building.
All good.
Nice stay all in all. Centrally located, nice staff good food nice room
On a hot stuffy day the dining room was relaxed and pleasant to enjoy a meal. Lovely staff, attentive but not hovering The hotel was spotless including the loos We had a lovely meal which was well presented - looking forward to going back again
The Bedford, Tavistock. We arrived at short notice after a problem elsewhere and the Bedford was excellent in all areas. Room was excellent as were staff, food and drink.
Poor husband order fried egg ,was served 2 hard poached eggs ,the rest was of poor quality. I was served lumpy porridge .
The food Al so no where to put stuff in bathroom
The location was perfect. The staff were friendly enough. Food was good
The shower was only a trickle but didn't cause too much of a problem as we only stayed one night.
Nichts!
We were very well looked after throughout our stay. Rooms were clean and comfy and the breakfast was of a very high standard. Staff were polite and hard working. We came with my elderly parents whose rooms were kindly moved to the ground floor by Charlene (apologies if I’ve gotten the name wrong!). There literally wasn’t anything too much to ask her for to accommodate our stay better. Fantastic customer service and care which was gratefully received. She and her colleagues were a real credit to the Hotel! Many thanks.
Staff very attentive, beautiful hotel, comfortable bed
30 degrees outside, no air-conditioning inside ... but this would only upset you for about one week mid summer. Good fan's provided in my room.
The staff were fantastic, nothing seemed too much, the hotel carried so much history. The room was lovely and spacious and the breakfast was fantastic.
We loved the place, the outside back garden could have had far more outside seating. You sat there and it felt you were in the middle of nowhere, so relaxing. The garden was well kept and it was a bonus to our visit.
Historic building in historic town with easy access to good shops, industrial archaeology and Dartmoor.
Nothing
Traditional hotel with wonderful staff.
No air conditioning, cramped bathroom.
Great location
Noisy - can hear people in corridor going into bedrooms, bed made a loud squeak.
A lovely hotel with lots of character. The staff were very efficient, helpful and friendly. We had a very good meal in the restaurant.
A charge of £8 per day or part-day to use the car park seems excessive.
Staff were very helpful. The food was good and the location excellent
Though the cooked breakfast was very good, the breakfast bar was a bit minimal.
Staff muito gentil
Falta ar condicionado e cortinas que escureçam o quarto
Appalling afternoon high tea. No tea leaves here just good old value tea bags plonked in a tea pot. Awful sandwiches cheese and pickle and ham and mustard as dull as ditchwater. The sloppiest cakes ever which made me feel ill and a hard baked scone which was just about edible
Breakfast was very good and seat by the window was lovely
The evening meal. Was over priced for what it was. I ordered duck and expected a full breast or leg and thigh. There were only 2 slices of smoky, tough duck. The veg was over cooked. Very disappointing.
After getting locked in the main Tavistock car park ( which closes at 4pm, despite arriving around 4pm) this hotel was a lifeline. Friendly staff and good food / drink. Co-op near by which is useful when all your belongings get locked in the car park! Nice character building and the grounds are pretty.
It was a little warm, but that can’t be helped in an old character property that would find it hard to justify air-con. However a fan was available in the room and the window opened without any noise outside.
I assumed there would be a lift to the upper floor...given that there was one from the car park. The air conditioning comprised one window which did not open more than 6 inches and the fan simply moved the hot air around the room.
NO AC..it was too hot in our room
The Bedford Hotel is owned by Warm Welcome Hotels who also operate the Two Bridges Hotel a few miles away up on Dartmoor. I stay at Two Bridges quite often, but the Bedford less frequently, my previous stay was four years ago when Two Bridges could not accommodate me for two of my chosen six days holiday. This June I decided to have a few days in Penzance and though it would be nice to have two nights staying at The Bedford on the way home. The Bedford really is a lovely hotel, nice, period, and traditional with very similar vibes to Two Bridges but set in an urban environment in the heart of Tavistock which is one of England’s nicest towns. The Grade II listed building has an interesting history and the architecture is impressive. I was allocated Room 8 on the first floor of the building to the rear overlooking the channel of the Tavistock Canal and the former Abbey curtain wall. Beyond that is the River Tavy, though out of sight it is audible in a pleasant way if one prefers to sleep as I do with an open window. I booked Dinner, Bed and Breakfast direct with the hotel. The food was excellent, like that offered at Two Bridges, but the menu is slightly more extensive and the opening hours of the Woburn Restaurant longer in the evening. The food is sourced from local suppliers from Cornwall and Devon their locations being identified on a map in the menu. The first evening I had Leak and Potato soup, followed by Dartmoor Steak for the main course and concluded with a dessert of Tamar Valley Strawberry trifle. The second evening for starters I had Tomato Soup, followed by Jail Ale Steak Pie, concluded with West Country Cheese collection. All excellent. Breakfast was also very good with the usual buffet items as well as served main dish which is freshly prepared. Since my last visit the bar has been remodelled but is still nice and of course serves the excellent Jail Ale. During my stay I also managed to encounter the now famous Tavistock cat – Sir Polo who is known for visiting various businesses around town and has his own Facebook page! The Bedford offers excellent value for money. From time to time I have stayed at a branch of a certain chain hotel that favours purple décor in Wales and have paid more for two nights room only than I paid for two nights Dinner, Bed and Breakfast at The Bedford. I really need to visit The Bedford more often!!!
Lovely staff and great hotel.
Room was way too hot! Could not sleepwell
As a solo traveller I had a single room but it did have a double bed which was very comfortable. Plenty of wardrobe space. Spacious ensuite shower room. I had breakfast on both days. Good choice at the buffet and on the hot breakfast menu cooked to order. The evening menu also had a very good choice and varied slightly each evening. The staff were professional, friendly and the service was excellent.
Due to the extreme heat it was disappointing that the windows were unable to be opened but a fan was supplied. The furniture and fittings were rather dated but the shower room was very modern with an excellent shower.
Goede locatie, en een sfeervol oud engels hotel.
Geen lift, en we hadden een kamer op de tweede verdieping. De douche had maar een klein straaltje.
Historical hotel. Really liked all of the photos through the years of local people and royal visitors.
It was a lovely old hotel and historical. There was nothing we didn't like.
Our room was good, staff were friendly, breakfast was good
Full length mirror on wardrobe door would be better on the left hand door as it doesn’t stay open properly to check yourself. No shower cap in the bathroom or a grab rail to get out of bath or shower. No visible management around, there was a wedding on and between the lull there was paper mess all up the front steps and reception area, which didn’t look good and could easily have been tidied up.
Location good, public rooms good
Bedroom disappointing, shower poor, had to pay extra for parking because didn’t book direct!
Breakfast was amazing.
I have stayed at The Bedford many times and it never disappoints. It is always friendly and relaxed and the food is brilliant. Extremely good value
Great service, good choice of breakfast, well cooked and well presented.
Bar service was slow. Couldn't get a decaf latte at 9pm because the barman had cleaned the coffee machine!
Lady Manager lovely but late night bar person didn't feel welcoming and topped a Courvoisier to the top of a slim jim. Needs to be trained more
Shower had very poor pressure. Mobility lift got stuck twice.
Nice room. Breakfast was very good.
Beautiful spacious and classy
Nothing negative
The room was spotless with everything we needed. Plenty of cupboard space, a dressing table and comfortable chairs. Breakfast was delicious with plenty of choice and set up in a smart dining room. We stayed here some years ago and the hotel was still smart and inviting. And car parking, perfect.
I should have remembered that there are a lot of stairs and no lift. That’s understandable considering how old the building is.
Very clean room and bathroom , comfortable bed , lovely staff at breakfast , so attentive and good service . Thank you .
Bar prices could be lower .
Wonderful hotel, it's our happy place in the lovely town of Tavistock
Great service, excellent breakfast
Situated opposite the church, the hotel was very convenient to look around the town. The staff were very friendly and helpful. In rooms allocated for pets there was a bowl, biscuits, poop bags and a ball. A lovely idea. And the food was super!
The room was far too small and cluttered. We had to pay to park in the hotels car park.
Beautiful old hotel with interesting art and decor. Everything was lovely.
Staff got breakfast order mixed up.
Great room with plenty of space, great breakfast, lovely cheerful and friendly staff
The bathroom - we were on the 2nd floor and the shower had little to no pressure so water dribbled out, fixed-head over bath shower, no grab rail so a little unsafe for elderly or limited mobility guests. The plumbing could be better. Heated towel rail didn't work so couldn't dry bath towels. The sash window couldn't be opened or closed, but it was slightly open at the bottom (painted so that it couldn't be moved).
Central
Having to pay £8 for the car park
Canadian visitors were given an absolutely beautiful upgraded room and a packed breakfast as they had to be on the road very early in the morning. Most satifactory.
Nothing. Recent changes impressive.
The Bedford Hotel is an icon of Tavistock and has such history attached to it. The location is brilliant, right in the centre of this lovely market town on Dartmoor. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. And the restaurant is superb, and I must recognise the chefs who delivered a really excellent dinner and breakfast during our stay. I would make a special trip for the food. I stayed with my brother during a nostalgic visit for us to the places where our parents grew up, and there are long family connections with both Tavistock and the Bedford Hotel. All in all a wonderful stay in a special property.
Food was excellent
Decor is dated
Dinner was good, and bar well stocked with good cocktail menu Generous tea and coffee tray in room with a bath
Breakfast was a bit sparse on the sel-serve section, and you could only order one hot choice (our choice had run out) Electric charger was difficult to use
Great location and central for night the Wharf forTribute band.
Nothing to dislike.
Staff good, food worth paying
Bedroom small and bed very uncomfortable, over priced for what we had
Beautiful property. Good rooms. Excellent breakfast. Great location.
Though we've frequented this fine Hotel, a few times, for drinks etc, first time we've been here for Afternoon Tea. My expectations were high, of course, as per previous visits. A wonderful lady at reception, booked us in and escorted us to our table. The restaurant was classy and spacious. A very polite and friendly young lady served us and she was superb throughout. The Afternoon Tea was perfect, in every way. Everything was fresh, top quality and plentiful. As was the tea and coffee. Washed down with a Prosecco, excellent. Brilliant service from everyone there. Thank you for having us.
Location
Very small room Despite reception being at the top of a flight of stairs and our room being up a further flight of stairs there was no lift availability, only in use for disabled people. We were offered help with luggage from reception level
Very convenient for town
En-suite very tired
Food good , service good ,room perfect
We had problems with EV charger. Staff not briefed on helping customers We were charged for the carpark in spite of the fact we used the bar for drinks and snacks and the restaurant for evening meal . Had we not been staying at the hotel, use of the carpark would have been at no cost.
This hotel has could be so much more than average . It's a beautiful building in the centre of Tavistock. Ideal for the memorial service we were attending in the church opposite. We had 5 rooms for our family including family room , and a room with an infant . One of the travel cots provided was tiny ( doll sized too small for our 11 month old granddaughter). Rooms were very clean.Bathrooms were clean & ok other than ours which had a corner bath rather than shower with poor water pressure such that the shower attachment was like staying in remote hotels in India! Funny but 2 nights was enough. Food & service in the restaurant on Friday night was good. The sandwiches, cakes & drinks in event room for 75 or so were excellent although the aircon in this room can make it cold if you are directly under it. I was glad we as a family choose to have Mum's Wake here she would have been pleased with the food & service for this. Some members of staff very helpful others average / ok. Breakfasts good. The evening meal in Tavistock room for 20 adults and 2 toddlers was a beautiful setting although not very warm and the average food compared to the night before. Lovely room though for a family gathering. In terms of value for money I would say reasonable . I settled all bills for our 5 rooms , meals , drinks etc having informed the hotel previously I would be doing this. 48 hours later they rang for payment of 2 children's meals and a bread basket they admitted they had missed off the bill for the Saturday night . No apology just how did I want to pay . It is not the amount of money which given the overall cost that upset me but after an emotional weekend it has not left the best memory of the place. I have some lovely memories of having coffee & food in the Bedford & attending events there with my Mother during her life . It just didn't quite live up to my expectations this time & the final phone call after us as a family joining spending several £1000's here really upset me. On the whole our children and their families , my brother and children enjoyed themselves & we were able to remember Mum in a place that was special to her.
Loved the room which had a jacuzzi bath. The staff were helpful and professional. Wonderful breakfast with local sausages and bacon.
Had to pay for parking because we did not book directly with the hotel.
Breakfast was good, although I’d have liked a bit more.
Didn’t appreciate being woken up at 5:45 ish by a very noisy dust cart on Tuesday morning.
Loved the traditional nature of the old building
Very disappointed that parking was extra at £8 overnight. Available free to those that booked direct but not to us because we booked through booking.com
We had our intimate wedding reception at the Bedford. Kay was incredible at being so flexible with our intimate reception! She answered any and every question promptly and professionally. The staff on the day were wonderful. The bridal suite is gorgeous and the guests that stayed with us were happy with their rooms. Breakfast both mornings was lovely, with staff remembering mine and my son’s allergies which was incredible! The rooms we used were lovely and exactly what we wanted! The food was probably the best meal I’ve ever had. Our guests were raving about the quality. The presentation was exquisite, more than we could have hoped for! We managed to have some rare English sun so could go into the garden for the cocktail hour which was gorgeous. They were also super flexible so my wonderful dog Benji could enjoy in the celebrations. Thank you so much for giving us such a wonderful day! I couldn’t recommend the hotel more for a meal, a sleep and a wedding!! Truly made it a wonderful experience for us.
Post-operation (knee replacement) I needed a few days break, and having previously stayed at both The Bedford and The Two Bridges hotels, knew that I would be comfortable. Checked in by charming Zoe who did all she could to help when I requested a chair to be put in my very small single room. I had everything else I needed in the room however, but question the design of putting a full length mirror inside a cupboard, which meant you couldn't see unless you were virtually in the cupboard. The hotel has a comfortable atmosphere, staff are pleasant and helpful. Breakfasts are plentiful and service is good. The Easter Sunday lunch was well presented and very tasty, and full marks for the dining room having flowers and eggs on a central table as a decoration. Finding a taxi to take me to The Garden House on Bank Holiday Monday was a puzzle solved by Zoe, who was determined and so helpful. Travelling on one's own (at my age!) isn't always easy but Zoe certainly made a difference. Altogether a very relaxing and comfortable stay. I would probably ask for a larger room next time.
I have always admired the building when I drive this way so wanted to stay and I was not disappointed
Absolutely nothing
Room of decent size. breakfast and dinner excellent. Staff wonderful.
Ideal spot in the centre of town. Room was large enough and very clean. staff were wonderful, and being able to take the dog a big bonus.
Have stayed several times - always excellent 👍
Staff were very nice, also efficient. Breakfast was lovely. The hotel is very clean indeed.
The room was too hot and small. We did advise reception when we checked out. The black coffee at breakfast was too weak.
Great staff - delicious supper on Friday night, as was breakfast.
Nice and quiet hotel, friendly efficient staff. Cozy rooms with comfortable beds
Absolutely nothing
Everything about our stay was excellent - it's a hotel with such history and character and remains a vibrant focal point for people in this lovely town. Staff were incredibly friendly, the food was very good and it has a wonderfully peaceful back garden - perfect to relax in when the sun is out
The Bedford Hotel in the centre of Tavistock is a very nice hotel. We enjoyed an excellent evening at the Murder Mystery evening with a lovely meal and overnight stay. A relaxing hotel, very convenient with pleasant, helpful staff and lovely food. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone who likes a peaceful, relaxing stay.
Lovely hotel, great staff and great food. The location is lovely. Will be returning soon
The staff were friendly and helpful. The bar was ok
The building is very tired and the bedroom smelt horrible. The bathroom was very poor and small with very dated furnishings. The Carpet was stained the bed was tiny and the room was too hot.
Very helpful staff, cute hotel and great location
Great service and great food. But an unpleasant surprise upon checking out was a £16 charge for parking in their car park.
