Innanzitutto l idea dell albergo diffuso .

love the concept, the location and the way things are almost at their original state
We payed 500 euros a night so expecting high level of detail. Hot water unreliable, light bulbs in the toilet didn't match the style and design. White light above the bed... Room was great with a small living room but no comfortable seat, coffee/tea or other amenities to allow for relaxing time in the room.
Everything, the staff and the beautiful medieval rooms and the Breakfast
Very friendly and helpful staff helped us to dive into medieval life. We lived as if on a film set (actually, there was in fact a film team taking scenes gor a movie). Excellent food (dinner and breakfast). Location so close to the Campo Imperatore could not been better. All in all an unbeatable atmosphere!
We had only a bath tube and no shower in the room. For people >60yrs and/or >100kgs this is annoying…
The hotel has kept the original rooms and infrastructure off the time ii was built, so it’s like walking back in time.
The room has no aircondition and the bed has a mattress made out of wool that is very hot and uncomfortable. During summer the room and bed is way to hot and therefore it’s very hard to sleep.
This was a truly remarkable experience to stay here. We were warmly welcomed by Cristina who took the time to explain everything to us and gave a personal tour of the room and all the facilities. If you want a unique experience of living in medieval times (with some luxuries, of course), then definitely book!! All the food we ate was original and locally produced and always well presented.

Sehr authentische liebevoll restaurierte Unterkunft, tolles Personal, super Restaurant!
It's unique charm and outstanding staff
That the shops were not open

We visited Santo Stefano di Sessanio as part of a classic car tour. Its stunning location atop a hill in Abruzzo was the perfect end to a day of torturous driving. On arrival it was easy to understand the history of this village once abandoned when its industry left, a typical story of many such high outposts in this beautiful part of Italy. Thankfully someone with intelligence, sensitivity and courage took on this incredible restoration which could not have been more sympathetic to the village homes now hotel rooms. To say that this project continues to be herculean is an understatement. But I had to stop at reception on departure to say that I had such respect for the enterprise in every detail. Every time a decision was taken by the restoration team, the easy temptation to choose modernity was abandoned in favour of authenticity, character and spirit. I have been privileged to stay in many villages that become hotels but nothing has compared to the aura of Sextantio Albergo Diffuso. Every detail was exceptional including breakfast foods recreating old Abruzzese recipes I knew to be genuine. The only reason for my four star review is the reality that access to some of the village homes might be treacherous for those with mobility difficulties and, lighting while authentic, could have been the one concession in interiors to safety especially on staircases. But beyond that, this outpost is an experience to treasure and deserves high praise.
Posto unico in una regione meravigliosa
Spektakuläres Hotel in historischem Ambiente. Sehr freundliche Mitarbeiter.

We had a wonderful 2-night stay at Sextantio Albergo Diffuso. We had high expectations having previously stayed at the sister property in Matera. But we were not disappointed. Our room was beautiful, comfortable and spacious with great attention to authentic detail. The surrounding Gran Sasso National Park is stunning and offers great opportunities for activities like hiking to Rocca Calascio. All the staff we encountered were so friendly and professional and we enjoyed delicious breakfasts. A highlight of our stay was the cheese making course with Serena. She was such a delight and so informative. I highly recommend a visit to the village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio. It is truly a magical place, and Daniele Kihlgren and his team have enabled people like us to experience amazing hospitality in such a unique setting.

Amazing experience to stay in such a historic location which has been preserved/restored to its original design The mountain and valley views are draw dropping The staff was very friendly and in knowledgeable
The property was charming and authentically dressed in keeping of the restoration. The location was stunning.
The property was difficult to access with the bathroom squeezed in to a corner of the room. Rather like dancing on a pin head. The mattress was again authentic to the region and using the local materials, with a wooden framed bed and local sheep filled mattress offering a slightly hard experience.
Unbelievable, unique, special, stunning…
Unique
Staying in a medieval village overnight is a great experience. The village (despite the ongoing renovation works) is full of charm, the room we stayed in was great, it is certainly not your typical hotel room, with all the candles, the chimney, the wool mattress... It gives a very strong medieval experience, while still providing great comfort. I would highly recommend this hotel to people wanting to try something a little different.
Professionalita’, pulizia, confort, tutto perfetto!

Charming hotel, everything has been renovated in an old-style design. The staff is exceptionally friendly. It feels like you’re transported back to the Middle Ages—really amazing.
For the price, you would expect a bit more comfort—that’s really the key issue overall. There is no shower, and the bath doesn’t have any shower facilities either. In other words, you have to wash yourself using a small basin, which is quite inconvenient. There’s also only a very small mirror for doing makeup or styling your hair. There is underfloor heating, but it becomes far too warm at night. We mentioned this several times, but it takes a long time for the floor to cool down after lowering the temperature. Despite the small windows, it’s almost impossible to sleep comfortably at night because of the heat. The bed is in an old style, about 1.5 meters high, with a mattress placed on wooden planks. It may feel nostalgic, but it’s not very comfortable. All these factors together mean we wouldn’t recommend it in terms of value for money. We were also a bit disappointed with the restaurant. The service is very good, but the dishes on the menu didn’t really appeal to us (perhaps a matter of personal taste). That said, I would still like to thank the staff—you were very friendly and helpful.
We spent two nights at Sextantio Albergo Diffuso in Santo Stefano di Sessanio, and the experience inside the hotel itself was truly exceptional. This is preservation hospitality at its finest — thoughtful, poetic, and deeply romantic. The room was absolutely stunning. Beautifully restored with original stone, wood, and natural materials, it felt timeless and intimate. The atmosphere was incredibly calm and romantic, with soft lighting and a sense of being gently disconnected from the modern world, without sacrificing comfort. Sleeping there felt like inhabiting history in the most elegant way. The cantina was outstanding. The food was delicious, high-quality, and deeply rooted in local tradition. Every meal felt authentic, refined, and comforting at the same time. The ambiance was warm and atmospheric, making dining there a highlight of our stay.
That said, the village itself was a bit disappointing for us. While undeniably beautiful and historic, there are currently many visible renovation and restoration works taking place, which create a strong contrast with the ancient, picturesque character of the town. We were aware of this in advance, but did not expect the renovation elements to be quite so present. We were also a little disappointed to discover that the hotel’s main restaurant — which we had very much looked forward to — was closed due to the off-season. Despite these points, Sextantio remains a very special place. The quality of the restoration, the romance of the rooms, and the exceptional cantina make it a unique and memorable stay, especially for those seeking atmosphere, history, and a refined sense of place.
Rispetto struttura originale
Posizione TOP! Concetto di albergo diffuso incredibile. Stanze concettualmente meravigliose.
We stayed at the Sextantio hotel in Matera and loved it so much that we basically re-engineered our entire winter itinerary just to spend three days at their sibling property, Diffuso Santo Stefano di Sessanio. Zero regrets — except maybe that we didn’t move in permanently. The attention and care that’s gone into revitalizing this hilltop town is unreal. It’s like someone lovingly dusted off history, patched up the stone walls, and said, “Okay, everyone back to being charming again.” The locals are so kind that we briefly wondered if we’d wandered onto the set of an Italian hospitality commercial. And since it’s inside Gran Sasso National Park, you also get jaw-dropping natural beauty included free of charge. Views so gorgeous they should come with a warning label. Highly recommend the cheese-making course with Serena. She doesn’t just teach you about cheese — she basically escorts you on a time-traveling adventure. 10/10 would stir curds again! Included is a charcuterie board and glass of wine. Great value for the experience!
Esperienza autentica e unica . Camino in camera molto apprezzato
Loved the historic element of this property!! Such a unique experience to stay in a medieval town stopped in time. They welcomed us with luggage assistance and a nice cup of mulled wine. We went for our honeymoon, so they gifted us a bottle of wine and saffron liquor.
Just a few snags in our stay, but they made it right. We woke up at 7am to extremely loud construction on our roof that shook the whole room. We could not sleep nor barely talk over it. We had also scheduled a baking class through the hotel and the instructor didn’t show up. They told us they could reschedule it 2 hours later or the next day. We definitely lost out on some scheduled activities due to this. We had also skipped lunch for the activity, but we’re so hungry when it was canceled and nothing in town was open.
This place is more atmospheric than the photos or descriptions can help to describe, and more comfortable than I expected. I loved the wool mattress bed and gorgeous crisp linens. The creaky old floorboards brought back memories from childhood and are polished to be wonderfully soft underfoot. I loved having a small fireplace I could use on a cold night. As I sipped on local wine and nibbled at "wine doughnuts" I helped to make. The bathroom I had was open (no lockable door) but felt well separated from the rest of the room and was well-appointed. Of the many interesting activities and amenities for this "albergo diffuso," I can heartily recommend the truffle hunting and learning to bake in a woodfire oven with a man who measures and mixes only with his hands, as his grandmother taught him to do. I also loved the frittatas for breakfast and the innovative often exciting tasting menu at the main restaurant. I think the value of this place is hard to measure, as you're simply never going to stay in a place that is like it or managed to the same level of detail. It's not hard to find and if you park where they suggest they'll have porters to help you with luggage. It's a wonderful town perched in the middle of a quietly magical part of Italy.
Historic aesthetic and beautiful construction, initial reception greetings, breakfast, bathtub, lovely town
Mattress was lumpy and not always comfortable, heater / air fan couldn't be adjusted, food at dinner was complicated and not to our liking (except a few dishes in our Evolution experience) and expensive for the offerings though the staff was exceptional
Tudo perfeito
Goffredo, Location and room
The cantinone didn’t match the rest of the experience, slow service and average food, also fireplace was not on, disappointed
L’idea dell’albergo diffuso.
Geweldige mooie plek en bijzondere ervaring, heel comfortabel
Outstanding experience blending medieval environment with enough modernity to be comfortable. Very atmospheric! The restaurant was also outstanding.
It's very minor but we could have done with a little more help in arranging a tour. We did leave it to the day before (so that's on us), but were told nothing was possible. Instead I googled and was able to arrange for bike hire myself.

Fantastic breakfast with quality ingredients
Semplicemente meravigliosa. Cena e colazione 🔝
The location is amazing! I wanted a unique experience on our first trip to Abruzzo, and this was certainly it! We stayed for two nights (Saturday & Sunday) in the Casa con L'Arco suite under the Medici Tower. We entered the suite to lovely candlelight and a tasty cordial, very romantic. It was charming & rustic, but so clean, a private bathroom with a tub/shower (the handheld shower attaches to a ceiling mount to create a shower effect - the water splashes everywhere, lol, but the terra cotta tiles dry quickly) and private bedroom. They provided plenty of towels, robes and slippers! We found the beds comfortable, with plenty of blankets to keep us warm. It did get a little chilly at night, but our suite included a fireplace. My only issue with the room was that the two outlets we had (only in the bathroom) were recessed into the wall and prevented our adapters from plugging in firmly. I would add a small area rug on each side of the bed. There was a step stool to get onto the bed, which was helpful. The town is tranquil, relaxed, safe and scenic. There are amazing views with every step you take. It certainly gave me a feeling of serenity. We weren't able to get into the hotel restaurant, but we had a fabulous dinner at La Locanda Sul Lago our first night. Our server was amazing as well. She didn't speak much english, but she appreciated my attempt at speaking Italian and was delightful! Dinner at Cuore Nero our second night was fabulous as well. We took a day trip to Sulmona and Rocca Calascio (we had a rental car). So much in this area to see and do if you want to get away from the tourist crowds and just enjoy old Italy. There were a couple tour groups that came through the town, which was annoying, but once they left there was peace. I would be remiss if I didn't mention how fantastico the people and the service were at Sextantio. Anything we needed, any questions we had, taken care of right away. The gentleman at the front desk was so very helpful and kind. The porters were wonderful and careful with our bags. Value is subjective, our stay was worth every penny to us. Would highly recommend staying here.
