It was an interesting place to spend a night where you get a feel of what it might have been like for the past prisoners.
You had to go upstairs for the women’s toilet and shower block. The beds were very narrow and banged right up against the walls, the room were cold
I love historical buildings
Nothing
Really cool idea, loved staying in the historical jail! I like how they've repurposed the doors for tables and utilized all the rooms. So quirky! The beds were comfortable enough for a few nights, the room was warm enough too for August.
I wasn't aware that there was an extra charge for towels as there was an image of towels in the room we booked, as we got there after reception was closed we had to go out and buy our own towels. I likely missed the information about that but it was a little misleading with the images of towels.
Chambre propre, personnel très sympathique
Rien tout est bien
The theme is great, it's easy to access, and they have good spaces to share such as the pool table, TV room, books and board games.
They don't check who enters the rooms. In my girls' room, besides occupying the bed assigned to me, there was a boy and a girl who spent the night there.
A themed hostel in a real former prison. Almost like a museum hostel, with plenty of information about the history of the place, important figures, and glimpses into what the cells were like when the prison was operational. Free parking is included, but you have to arrive early to get a spot. The rooms are very comfortable and include spacious lockers. There are recreation rooms with a TV with Netflix, a pool table, and darts. Check-in is quite quick, they just send you the codes by email, and you can arrive at any time. There's a spacious shared kitchen. A great hostel for exploring Christchurch
For some reason, when you enter the reservation on booking it says breakfast is included, but there is no breakfast
Shower stalls were a little small
Staff were very friendly, especially the cat ones! The overall vibe of the place was very nice, and everything was surprisingly clean. We also enjoyed the historical fun facts and information bits everywhere.
The showers, and also our room was always freezing, and we didn't have any control over our heating.
I liked the accessibility. Using a PIN for the front door and the room was convenient.
The shower/bathroom on the lower level was lacking. The floor was constantly wet and there was barely any counter space to put toiletries, dry clothes and towels, besided the already wet floor.
The experience of staying in a jail..
Very cold
Another very comfortable night at a unique accomodation experience
It would’ve been good to have some bedside tables and a charging port or power outlet near the head of the beds. Mattresses were a bit hard as well but otherwise had a great day.
Cool to visit — it had some good common areas, a nice pool table, and the staff were friendly. They also cleaned every day.
Unfortunately, this was the worst dorm experience I’ve ever had. I regrettably booked a full week of non-refundable accommodation. Before booking, remember that this is literally a converted prison. The dorm room was cold and depressing, the showers were rubbish and often cold. and the toilets are very much ‘prison’. The surrounding area also didn’t feel particularly safe. On my first night, I heard a fight nearly break out outside, which I couldn’t help but find slightly ironic. If you don’t want to risk ending up in a cold prison-cell-style 10-bed dorm with some questionable characters, I’d strongly recommend booking a private room instead. The common areas were clean and reasonably nice, but the dorm experience was horrendous. My first night was genuinely bad enough that I actually felt like crying. Two stars is generous. This feels more like a $10-a-night hostel. I almost feel like I would’ve had a similar experience if I’d actually been locked up for a week (except that would’ve been free). I’m fairly well travelled and have stayed in plenty of hostels, but this was easily my worst dorm experience. I will never be coming back.
Le fun de l'hébergement ! Auberge de jeunesse atypique. Propre, silencieuse.
Great location. Friendly staff. Clean facilities. Great kitchen
Can book at anytime
Parking spot is taken by random (local) people cars, who doesnt stay in Jailhouse
good location
Wifi is slow
History & experience of staying in a real jail!
Noise in morning when we wanted a lie in. Limited parking, felt a bit edgy.
Loved the vibe. Really appreciated the easy non contact access. Extra covers if cold were super nice too
Showers were cold but overall considering the building there's not much to do about that
It was clean friendly and very accomodating to our needs.

Fabulous and funky place to stay. Great value for money, comfy beds, cells are remarkably quiet!
It was a fun unique experience. Well cleaned and friendly staff. Good facilities.
The WiFi didn’t reach well through thick cell doors.
Location
Could have more parking
Many spacious common areas. There will always be a quiet place to relax if you need it.
When you shower, the hot water is intermittent and doesn't get really hot even when you use the highest setting. It's not fun in the winter 😅
Es literalmente una cárcel reconvertida. Pasillos fríos, baños fríos, poca iluminación.
The old prison is well renovated. The beds are confortables.
It was very cold in the hostel, especially at the beginning of winter. The bathroom was not very clean, and the windows were constantly left open. After having a cold shower because the water wouldn’t stay warm for long, it was far from ideal. The heating was turned off in the morning, and we had to ask the staff to switch it on again in the evening because the room was freezing. We also had no control over the heating ourselves, which made the stay quite uncomfortable.
Different and historic.
Unique being an old prison
Toliet (males)
They sure are committed to the jailhouse aesthetic here lol. It was actually pretty cool to have the informational displays about the history of the jailhouse around. The doors all locked with a code which was neat, no worrying about getting locked out. The kitchen was easy to use and I didn't have any issues with the bathrooms.
The only outlet I could find was on the opposite side of the room so I couldn't sleep with my phone next to the bed. The location is a little further away from the CBD, but convenient for the train station which is nearby.
Pretty much everything a solo backpacker needs. The vibe is special and interesting. Not stressful using kitchen and common areas.
Unfortunately, the room I stayed has someone using weeds and vaping in the room. A guy is snoring like thunder through all night. Horrible nightmares.
Very special and fun place to stay, really nice and helpful staff
The rooms are a bit cold
Easy check in. Spotlessly clean.
Parking can be tight. Toilets upstairs a bit tight for room.
I always enjoy staying here. It’s a little far from the CBD, but nearby some great restaurants and it’s such a fun and funky spot I’ll take the slight distance any day. It’s bright, clean and tidy and the cats are friendly. An amazing price for a private room
Unfortunately someone was going to town slamming doors one night, but they got a talking to and quieted down. Because of the heavy doors and big space noise can echo, but if everyone is being considerate I generally find it quiet and peaceful through the night, and calm and quiet during the day.
Interesting history and set up
Vriendelijke behulpzame mensen. Kreeg een 2p ‘cel’ waar mij alleen. Twee leuke koffie zaakjes vlakbij.
I like the location. Nice and quiet. Comfortable and clean. Good value for money.
Nice free paeking right in front of the hostel. The 4 bed female dorm was nice and private. The staff was really really nice. Everybody was so welcoming and gave good advices as well. 😊👍
There wasn't a locker where you could actually put your valuables. Just simple drawers. Closer to autumn it also got really really cold in the rooms and huge ceiling common area. Probably nothing you can really do about it and the hostel also offered second blankets. Maybe a more designated area for general free stuff and free kitchen/food things would be great. It is always so great to have a kitchen with at least the essentials like oil and salt.
Basic accommodation, but fun place to stay considering it was once a fully working jailhouse.
I can't really say there was anything I disliked as it is what it's described as and a part of the experience... if I could say one thing, maybe the bathrooms/ toilets.
Recently stayed here while over in Christchurch and absolutely loved it. The atmosphere was friendly, relaxed and very welcoming. Even though the rooms are compact original jail cells, the high ceilings made them feel comfortable and we both slept extremely well. Everything was spotless, including the shared bathrooms and kitchen areas, and the electronic keypad access made the place feel very secure. There were plenty of comfortable areas to relax, and the whole place has an amazing mix of history and character while still feeling modern and comfortable. Would definitely stay here again and honestly preferred it over a standard motel. A really memorable experience.
Very clean kitchen and quiet dorm room!
The uniqueness of the accomodation
Nothing
It was very cool to stay in an old jail, I liked the vibe and they've done it up pretty well. The location was good, we were able to store our bags easily before & after our stay.
You aren't able to adjust the temperature in the room which is honestly ridiculous. It was freezing in the room and they offer hot water bottles and extra blankets, but come on, I should not have to sit under two blankets with my jumper on and still feel cold in a room I am paying for. I spoke with reception who turned the heat up apparently, but it was still freezing the the room the entire time we stayed. It wouldn't be as bad if you could heat up in the shower, but the showers seemed to run mostly cold with the odd hot 30 seconds or so. In total, I spoke with four staff members, three were lovely, but one woman was so rude. I let her know my door was not unlocking and she seemed so bothered by me asking for her help and also didn't belive me when I tried to explain the situation multiple times. She seemed to think I had forgoten my code, or perhaps didn't know how to open a door. Her attitude was pretty appalling. Overall, I would not stay here again. It was just not worth the money.
