It was lovely! Nice wine in the afternoon in the library and great breakfast elegant Diningroom. An over all unique experience to have the opportunity to be stay in this historic mansion.
The historic beauty of the property
Sadly we could only spend one night in this beautiful old homestead.
It was all good.
This property is amazing. James and James are delightful hosts, extremely friendly and attentive. The dinner and breakfast were both excellent as was the room and all the facilities. The history to the house is very interesting indeed. This is a must stay property if you are in the area…
very authentic and customised breakfast to chinese family.
attitude could be better, understand this is historic house not allowing child to stay but i have actually pm beforehand he said ok to come over, but turned out on the actual day a short drama was happened.
very special experience spending time in such a house! friendly hosts
Very friendly hosts and big comfortable rooms. Delicious dinner and breakfast all made to perfection by the hosts. Easy free parking and nice lounge and snooker room. Penguin colony nearby with evening program. There is even a Gym and Garden, that can be visited and a fireplace when to cold outside.

It’s a beautiful place, and so much to see before you even go out. The owners (James and James) are very helpful. The first James helped save us making a big mistake on our drive to Mt Cook (the info we’d received about the best route turned out to be wrong!). Also saved us time going to visit a site which was showing open online but he’d heard it was closed, so checked for us. Saved a lot of unnecessary driving the wrong way!
Nothing really. Lily would have liked to spend more time with the dogs, but we had to carry on our holiday…
Its location and the historical elements of the property.
Nothing to mention.
Wonderful hosts with fountains of knowledge, fantastic breakfast and just felt all out pampered. Relaxing weekend which was what we were after.
Very special
James and James are the perfect hosts. We have a fantastic experience. Thank you!
we liked that this was an inn with a lot of history and character, but was super clean, charming and had all of the modern amenities we needed
the authentic Victorian historic building. The beautiful gardens, the amazing furnishings , fabulous bed and linen, and overall attention to detail in every moment of our stay. From our personal welcome greeting to the delicious dinner and breakfast provided, our time spent here was perfect.
absolutely nothing
so interesting and perfectly beautiful
Just magnificent .. the most beautiful old lodge Ive ever laid eyes on !! You couldn’t fault the place and the hosts !! Worth every cent and would highly recommend and if I get the chance will happily return !👌❤️😊
Nothing to dislike !
Unique graceful spreading layout adds wonder to this attractive Victorian B & B. The gardens in spring are a riot of color, the food delicious and the bed comfortable. The hosts, James and James are delightful.
The food (made with homegrown ingredients), the room, the hosts were exceptional. The tiles of the restroom are heated. It contains a wide array of beautiful art pieces.

This historic homestead is fascinating in itself, and has been beautifully restored and renovated. The owners were helpful. We particularly enjoyed the library and the garden. The breakfast was superb, and served in delightful surroundings.
Absolutely beautiful house with wonderful art and interesting and friendly hosts. Loved the book about the art and objects. Enjoyed game of snooker. Would have loved to stay longer
Really beautiful historic home converted in to a lodge. Food was creative, beautifully served and delicious, much of it from the home's garden and local producers. Lovely appointed rooms with everything you could need. Friendly, low key hosts. Close to town centre and historic area.
Absolutely a great place to stay. Very kind host, Gorgeous garden, beautiful house, nice infrastructure, delicious breakfast. I’ll absolutely come back. Thank you so much for looking after us!
Sensationell!
Great location and very nice accommodation. Homemade food items including jam, honey, etc. Owners are very friendly.
This is an awesome property, but for a solo traveler, who paid for a double room - my friend was on a budget - I think this Estate is more about form than substance. When I arrived, one of the owners (I think) met me at the door with an umbrella - nice touch - but then said, "I thought you would be two!?" Well, of course the default on hotels.com is 2, so already I felt tension in the air. He was very nice to me until I booked another night. My friend on a budget visited and the proprietors treated him like a curiosity as he stood on the patio with the rain pouring down in buckets. They invited him in, we went into the drawing room, and since I had paid for it, I invited my friend to breakfast the next morning, but he later canceled, feeling uncomfortable. I felt fine until the next day when I was asked to a tip for a one-inch square of "harvested" honey. The food is very good. The accommodations are terrific, but the sense of welcomeness is lacking, and while you worry whether you will disturb their - or his - routine, if you ask questions, you feel as if you are disturbing their - or his - routine. That's as honest as I can say, especially for the price.
Not only is the lodge gorgeous and in a great location, but what really makes Pen y Bryn special is the personal attention from the owners. James greeted us by the car with an umbrella, offered us gourmet cookies he had baked that morning, later met us and the other guests in the drawing room for complementary wine and gourmet appetizers he had made! He is truly a warm, fascinating person and shared many amazing stories of his travels. The lodge is reminiscent of a Scottish estate and we were welcome to wander about enjoying the diverse artwork, play snooker in the billiards room, admire the gardens. Each room has a name and makes you feel like a guest in a European castle...exquisite furnishings, decor, and view. The lodge is a mere 5 minutes from the blue penguin colony, which was our primary reason for visiting. Our only regret is that we did not stay longer! We are traveling around the entire South Island and by far this was our favorite place! Would love to return and will definitely tell everyone who plans to come to New Zealand to stay at Pen y Bryn! Thanks James and James!!! You guys are awesome!
Very good standard of facilities and service, excellent meals, a thoroughly enjoyable ambience and experience
Stayed here one night. The American ex-pat owners have restored this lodge to a very high level. The guest rooms (we saw two) are beautiful as are the common areas. The owners are very proud of the lodge and enthusiastic about explaining its history. Although we did not eat dinner at the lodge (our mistake for not booking it before we arrived) James served us canapés and wine (both of very high quality) and we had an informative conversation about Oamaru and things to do. James made reservations for us and got us tickets to view the penguins returning at dusk. (A must see activity - get premium seating.). In hindsight we should have stayed at the lodge two nights having dinner there at least once. There is a lot to see in and around Oamaru. The lodge is pricey but worth it. It's not a place for kids though; the furnishings are too exquisite and without tv they may be too rambunctious.
