Breakfast great. Staff very efficient and friendly
Water pressure in shower not great. Water not very hot
Fabulous room. Spacious and comfortable. Friendly welcome. Great evening meal.
Lovely, traditional pub with rooms, very comfortable all facilities.
Poor selection at breakfast.
Great staff, but the room was compact and needed upgrading. But it had all the facilities we needed, good welcome tray. Automatic light and fan in bathroom went on for too long. Didn’t spoil a great weekend but needs attention
See above
location and staff excellent
our room attn to detail ie lights blown ,bathroom light kept going out Sunday breakfast had lengthy wait for food needs rethink when busy.room #9 needs refurb or more space quite tight
The staff were incredible and the atmosphere in the Inn was very homely. The food was also very good.
Breakfast room was pleasent. Cooked food was good, continental food minimal
Help yourself coffee
Having stayed here a number of times there has been a consistent high standard with what appears to be a seamless transition to new ownership. Staff are superbly helpful, premises are clean & comfortable and the dining provides very good food with excellent service.
Nothing to say here
Great village but its not in Steyning town its a little village about a 20 minute walk away
It was expensive for 1 night
Ideal location for a walking holiday Friendly helpful staff Close to a bus route Pretty village
Lovely area and nice friendly hotel.
Friendly and comfortable with good parking. Large shower cubicle. Toiletries and towels. Tea/coffee/chocolate & kettle. Breakfast was good. Bar.
Expensive. No air con. Large fan moved the hot air around! Small shower room with no natural light. Electric shower was noisy and not very good. Room is quite dated. Two singles pushed together.
Lovely location and building. Great bed, cotton sheets and fluffy towels. Air conditioning in our room. Friendly service. Nice breakfast.
Our room was right on the road which was noisy from crack of dawn. If this bothers you, I suggest asking for a room at the back of the hotel.
Comfortable room, good breakfast
Easy check-in at the bar. The dining area was a bit souless. It just had no atmosphere at all. However, the lovely young lady serving was exceptional on the Saturday night. It was busy & she was working alone. She really was unbelievable but should have had another member of staff to ease her workload. The food was really good. Breakfast was OKish. Didn’t like the flies that landed on the bread. This can easily be covered to prevent this. I had eggs royale & the eggs were rock hard with a load of sauce. Room was OK but the shower took 10 minutes to warm up! However there was a sign to inform. But for £228 for 1 night it was not worth it.
Liked the location, the outside area and staff.
We could hear the extraction fan from the room
Great location, views of the surrounding area were stunning. Staff were friendly.
Breakfast was poor, poached eggs were very hard, not much choice, could do with a selection of fresh fruits. The toaster could do with replacing, toaster burnt your bread and release button popped bread in the air. Hot water tap in the sink didn’t heat up. Overall, the room could do with modernisation. Very noisy from the road once traffic gets going.
Charme du lieu, bâtisse ancienne bien rénovée.. Personnel au top
Great location, friendly staff and the history of the building, breakfast was very good and set us up for the day continuing our walk along The South Downs Way

Just location
Old and grubby
Trevlig personal och bra parkeringsmöjligheter.
Sängarna var smala och för mjuka.
Beautiful hotel, in a small quaint village. Air conditioning in our room which was a life saver! Lovely breakfast and catered perfectly for our dietary needs
The menu for both breakfast and dinner were exceptional. We throughly enjoyed the Full English and the Eggs benidict. The bed in room 7 was so comfortable which I find unusual in most hotels, although my wife didnt like the pillows, but I loved them! Plenty of hot water for the shower. Great WiFi in the room and a TV system that worked well and had all the channels, highly unusual for a hotel. The bar and restaurant area were comfortable and I loved the Chesterfield sofa and arm chairs.
I had expected more! The maintenance in room 7s bathroom was poor. Pealing paint on the ceiling, badly sealed shower tray, worn tap in the sink (also difficult to get hot water from it). The fan supplied was beyond throwing away, but because the weather was so hot, I fixed it so we could at least turn it on and not vibrate itself to pieces. A pub closing at 10pm most nights except Sunday when it closed at 8pm! By all means close to the public if its too quite but at least have a bar open for guests.
The air conditioning in the restaurant was great. The staff were very welcoming and we had a lovely stay
There was nothing that we did not like
Lovely friendly staff and excellent location. Food menu was good and service efficient. Room was clean, comfortable and the air con was a fab surprise.
Nothing we didn’t like - met expectations and good value for money
Great location. Plenty of parking
Bedrooms could do with a refresh. Not a big deal but it took a while to get the TV to work. The small knob that turns water on & off on the shower was missing, so it was hard to turn on/off. Communications from hotel regarding bookings was hit and miss.

Everything it was all great
It was all great
Crisp, bright and workmanlike. Enter off the Monarch's way the space is both cavernous and cosy. The toilet corridor has been dressed with photographs of the village when the street was flooded by the river. Oh to lunch today with feet immersed in water. The menu is adequate. Service is good. We snacked on one course with the intention of returning to spend more time on the fayre
Front of the hotel very attractive, front dining room very nice, some friendly staff. Good location
Back end of the hotel doesn’t match the front which is a shame. Parking, patio area, breakfast rooms fairly average. No instructions for TV which took a while to workout. Not sure the staff member on duty for breakfast was fully awake!!
Chef not available at the time of leaving, however manager ruffled up a sausage sandwich - thank you
Easy to find and park and if parking full there is a free village car park across the road. Very lovely pub both outside and in. Very warm welcome from all staff and good food. Bedrooms comfortable and clean.
Nothing
Good breakfast. Room supplied all I required. Didn't require dinner.
I loved the quiet location, excellent food, friendly staff, and that I could store a bike securely
The room was hot, but it was 32 degrees outside and they had provided a fan
Amazing English breakfast, staff was very kind. Our room was spacious, with a super comfortable bed and a luxury bathroom with bathtub and shower! Lovely old property in general
cleanliness of the shared communal spaces
Location was good for us, evening meal was good. Breakfast was good .
Room was quite small and I appreciate it's a old building but very uneven floors in our room. Not great soundproofing as could hear the people in room next to us. Just maybe could do with some tlc. Also not sure if they was short staffed but had to wait quite a while in the restaurant for ordering food and drinks. And £7.65 for a pint of beer seems quite excessive in my opinion.
必要な物は全てにおいて使いやすい。犬を連れての宿泊でベットの高さが高く犬もベットに登れないので清潔。
Clean spacious bedroom . Good evening meal.
A bit short staffed at breakfast time and not enough tables so very slow .. hopefully a one off .
Lots of character and staff were helpful, professional and friendly.
Bedrooms were really hot: there was a fan in the room but insufficient in heatwave.
The Castle Inn Hotel looks lovely and the village is old and interesting. I did not enjoy my one night stay mainly due to a poor experience at breakfast. I have mobility difficulties and was on my own, and had asked for breakfast at 8.30 when booking in. However at 8.30 the next morning I was told the breakfast room was full. Instead they told me to sit in the dining room on my own and when I asked for coffee I was told to get it from the machine. The table was not laid up for breakfast, and I couldn’t carry coffee from the breakfast room. I felt isolated in the dining room as if discriminated because I am disabled and a solo traveller. When booking out I suggested this could have been handled better if I had been given a cup of coffee and asked if I minded waiting for a table to become free. I have not received an apology.
The village is very picturesque and the pub cum hotel looks very good from the street. The room I was allocated was not in the main building but in an annex across the parking lot. It was initially quite hot and stuffy but equipped with a free-standing fan that, with opening a few windows improved it a lot. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom small but functional. The breakfast was really very good and the breakfast staff were pleasant.
The reception is the bar and the check in experience could really have been much better. The main person who was meant to check me in was on a long call and eventually the barman checked me in. The barman was good, but overall the service both at check in and at dinner was quite poor. The food was edible but not outstanding and I did not feel like it was good value. To be fair I didn't order the specials of the day and it could be that I chose badly. I had an asparagus dish that sounded excellent and looked good on the plate, but the asparagus used wasn't good.
Very welcoming and friendly host. The hotel is clean and tidy. Great breakfast, plenty of choice. Looking forward to going back for another stay..
Hartelijke ontvangst en we hadden een ruime lichte kamer met ruime badkamer met douche en toilet. 'S avonds nog heerlijk gegeten in het restaurant.
De ramen konden helaas niet open.
Location Upgrade Bath and shower Comforting decor Helpful staff Top soaps shower products Strong wifi Free parking Air conditioner (not a fan)
Not being able to stay longer....... look forward to next visit
The evening meal was superb pleasant bar. The staff were very obliging.
Cosy room was a bit small for 2 walkers bags and rucksacks. That said I did book that room so not the hotels fault.
Lovely looking pub in good location. The staff we met were trying their best in a difficult situation as it felt as if the whole place was understaffed and one young person was trying to handle everything at once.
Service at dinner was slow and seemed to be indifferent (see comment above). We watched the episode of Hotel Inspectors that local people had told us about that featured this pub. I think they all missed a huge trick in not thinking about their walking and cycling clientele. It was expensive for what it was.
Perfect location and delicious breakfast. Super friendly staff, pub was really good to sit and have dinner and drinks.
Room was comfortable enough but brickwork on fireplace is loose and I wouldn’t want to be in there with kids as could easily come down. PAT testing on electrical items seems to have last been done in 23 which is probably why they didn’t all work.
The staff were cheerful and accommodating but the hotel itself was disappointing. The room number 6 was above the bar so there was noise until closing time. The floorboards were all uneven and creaked all the time especially the room above me. The noise was constant all through the early hours until about 8am where I believe a dog was staying with its owner. The power of the water in the bathroom was very weak. No wardrobe for clothes only a couple of hooks with hangers. Kettle never switched off. No drinking water provided. No bathroom brush to clean toilet. The stairs were very steep not suitable for the infirm or elderly like us. There was at least a 2 inch gap under door which didn’t board well for fire regulations. A draught excluder was provided to cover the gap.
The room plus what was stated above.
The pub has a lovely seating area by the fireplace. Loved enjoying a drink there and chatting to other customers. I liked the tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits in the room. It is a good location for South Downs Way hikers.
The layout of the room was a little strange and I would recommend pulling up the carpet.
Great location for a walk in to Steyning and for the South Downs. Staff were excellent. Good choice of breakfast items to order as well as the usual cereals and breads. The evening dinner menu was good too!
We stayed in one of the outside cottage type rooms. The floor had not been swept when we arrived (so many bits on our feet!!) and wasn’t swept when the housekeeping staff came in on our second day. We ran out of handwash as that hadn’t been checked either.
Very friendly flexible staff , comfortable room, quiet location. 1/2 hour walk from the Southdown way. Breakfast request at 0700 were accommodated willingly.
A bit pricey but met all our needs
Smart property. In right location for us. Good food. Helpful staff.
Well located and very clean. Friendly staff.
No hot water and moved to room with unfinished decor. Basic bed and pillows. TV on adjacent wall to bed on a fixed bracket but probably not typical of all rooms. Breakfast was ok.
Spacious and comfortable room Very good breakfast included Evening meals available and excellent Very helpful and pleasant staff Very pleasant bar and dining areas Large garden outside
Deshalb meine ‚gemischte‘ Bewertung.
Quaint Friendly staff
Bike shed could be a little more organised but there was lots of help
Regular visitor to the Castle Inn Hotel, this is the first time with my wife. Location of the hotel is in the quant village of Bramber, the hotel building is lovely. Bar is fantastic and welcoming. Food is good, great choice for breakfast and happy to modify any of your choices to meet your tastes.
The stay was great, if I was to make any comments it would be that the bar had closed 22:30 one night and the beer is a little pricy. There is a discount on both food and alcohol, check with the staff.

Nothing
Fantastic small hotel , excellent location , clean and they serve great food especially breakfasts The staff are very friendly and helpful I would recommend a stay in this hotel .
The evening meal was good
The buffet breakfast was disappointing
This is our second time we have come back! And we are going to book the third time soon! Firstly, this hotel is amazing! Super clean and the decor is just nothing but a touch of class. But regardless the staff are 10/10 super friendly, bubbly everyone makes you feel super welcome , and everyone really makes sure you have a great time. The rooms are spotless, and there’s plenty of space! And I love the beams in the ceiling. Carri you are nothing but a ray of sunshine! I hope the hotel keep you as your made for this job! This young lady has gone above and beyond, and the hotel really wouldn’t be the same without you! Keep smiling and keep being you! You have a great personality and we love you! Thankyou. Jordan
The hotel is in a lovely location and convenient for a variety of country walking, and independent shopping, nearby in Steyning. The hotel staff are friendly as well as the residents in the pub And it is very dog friendly.
It is very noisy if you stay overlooking the car park and there is a large extractor fan that comes on very early in the morning. It was hot when we stayed and we had the windows open. Big mistake. The coffee at breakfast was terrible. It was served in jugs and it was weak and tasted of sugar. I told the waitress and she offered to get me a proper coffee from the machine. I asked for an Americano, no milk and she bought me a coffee with milk. I gave up and went to a coffee shop in Steyning. The cooked breakfast was good though. It’s not the best value accommodation but it is In the middle of stunning Sussex countryside.
Everywhere spacious clean and full of light. Staff friendly and helpful
Nothing to dislike Fresh fruit at breakfast would be good
Breakfast was excellent and meal the night of stay
Overall for the price paid, very good
The castle Inn was a lovely place to stay our garden view room was fab, spacious and really clean. The staff were so friendly and could not do enough for you organising booking for our evening meal. We were walking the South Downs Way and it was a great stop over, just off the path, although up and down a hill. Both our evening meal and breakfast were really tasty and well presented. We will certainly be back.
Nothing
Great room, good food, fantastic staff and lovely location
Leaving :0)
Nice walk along the river to the pub from the South Downs Way. Large room, warm and clean.
The room where we had dinner was really dull, no place settings, cutlery in a beer mug. Felt this room lets the hotel down. It would have been a nicer experience to eat in the bar area. Also, breakfast was poorly managed. Guest had to get up and down for everything and ask and wait around for cutlery, plates, glasses, hot water etc. as there were none available. Could do with a larger area so all you need can be laid out or it would be easier if the tables were set.
Friendly staff good food ...comfortable room
The Bed was very comfortable . Clean room tidied clean towels if needed Breakfast cooked to order. Sunday Roast excellent
Room 11 decor very tired. Mould in shower. Damp stains on ceiling.
Warm, dry, clean and tidy 👍
Nothing
Great location and excellent food.
Room a bit tired
The staff were super helpful, even though it meant that they had to leave the main accommodation and walk along to the subsidiary bedrooms
A shower in the morning only produced Luke warm water. There was no milk and no shower gel. The reception to the annexe of bedrooms was not staffed and it would have meant a telephone call to the main accommodation to fix these problems.
Excellent staff who went above and beyone in their hospitality. Room was super comfortable and very clean. The pub/restaurant was welcoming with a varied menu, including good drink choices. Our meal was excellent and would definitely return to eat there again. Particular thanks to Geoff who made sure everything went well with our stay, he is a hard-working and professional member of their team. Many thanks for a lovely stay.
Wonderful breakfast!
Location and comfort
Nothing
Nice food
Busy, noisy hotel. Good for them, not for us!
Very close to the south Down footpath, good breakfast, nice room in a very old building,
Two days before, I got an email telling me they closed on Sunday at 5pm and a late check in would cost £20. Nothing said when I booked. It actually was not true as they were open until 7pm and actually did food until 6pm. I definitely would not pay £20 just in case I was late but as a long distance walker it changed how my plans. I might have eaten if I know they served until 6pm. Also the link on the email didn’t work.
Breakfast
Staff were generally confused at check in. Sent us note that if we check in after 5pm on Sunday they would charge 20 pounds. They turned the lights off at the bar at 5pm but kept it open until 6:30. All very confusing. No heat in room.
Pleasant enough
Wasn't made clear at booking that food finished at 5 and bar closed at 7. So as a resident, no dinner and no drink.
Food was good, with good service
We booked our visit in July 2025, confirmation of deluxe double with garden view. We arrived at 2.00pm on Friday 8th May, to be told there was no room at the Castle Inn and we would have to take a room at the Tollgate Hotel some 200yards down the road. Clearly this accommodation was not fully ready having only been taken over a few weeks ago. Wi fi was not available despite notice to the contrary, food was not available at this address and for breakfast we had to walk back to the Castle Inn. Room was OK but not to the level of the Castle Inn as advertised , Shower water took for ever to heat up . Overall a complete disappointment having made the booking some
Trevlig personal, personligt bemötande. De arrangerade ett quiz där alla gäster bjöds in. Trevligt! Bra läge med fina promenadvägar runtom och intressant historisk plats med en kyrka från 1000-talet.
Good breakfast, nice pub, great bathrooms, friendly manager
Interior decor a little outdated but fine
Th staff were great. The bedroom & ensuite were a little tired (but clean).
The noise from the kitchen extractor woke us up!
Good location, excellent breakfast and catered for coeliac diet.
A lovely welcome; the room was nice with a very comfortable bed and powerful shower. Lovely terrace to have a drink in. The food at dinner was very nice.
The dining room fittings (tables, chairs, cutlery, glasses) could be updated and it would be so much nicer. But food and service were great.
Second time we had stayed at The Castle. Great staff in the evening, good ales. Clean and comfortable. Parking good.
Food was ok in the restaurant but didn’t blow us away. Breakfast good but understaffed poor girl running around. Our room, room 3 was spacious and lovely but the hot water to the shower was a joke. Took 20 minutes to get it to work, not quite as long for the basin and bath but really unexceptional.
Room was very clean beds were comfortable new bathroom Both dinner and breakfast were very good Staff were excellent nothing was to much trouble
Not really anything to dislike but we felt there was not a very well situated electric socket for the use of hair appliances and no shaver socket in the bathroom although obviously fairly recently fitted.
The room - bathroom difficult to use. No anti slip mat in shower, no hooks or shelves.
