Everything was great and the hotel itself is beautiful, as well as the view and staff who work there. :)
Getting to the property especially at night is a bit like playing Mario Bros. You need to go up a steep hill, first part paved and then up a dirt road (with absolutely no light at night) and then go up very steep narrow steps where at the end two vicious dogs await. At night they become especially territorial and should definitely be tied or inside their house, yet they are not! A very nice but ambivalent old lady, the owner of the house, lets them run loose regardless of the fact that they are quite wild. As a result, unfortunately it is an ordeal to get to the hotel, especially after sunset. —There surely must be something they could do to make the walk up to the hotel much more comfortable and safer for the guests. Like putting some lights leading up to the place and making sure those dogs are not a threat to guests. (Btw. The hotel is a good 10 minute walk from the Main Street, not half a block as it appears on the map). Please note: once you’re safely inside the hotel everything is super nice!
Pool area and grounds were nice
Rooms are very rundown
No tienen estacionamiento...
Beautiful rooms, amazing ocean views, lovely swimming pool, very peaceful.
Nothing!
An absolute dream of a hotel! Gorgeously decorated in a rustic style, it sits on a hillside where you can see and hear the ocean from everywhere. It takes about 10 minutes to get to the beach by walking down the hill. The garden is kept immaculately, full of flowers and palm trees. Rooms are greatly and beautifully equipped, quiet, with A/C and fan, and very comfortable bed. Staff went above and beyond to help us out with our stay and even planning our holiday. Couldn't recommend it more, a true paradise.
Beautiful boutique hotel on the hill above San Agustinillo, friendly and accommodating hostess and staff, quiet clean and comfortable rooms, lovely outdoor pool overlooking the sea, nice kitchen
The stairs up to the hotel might not be so accessible for the severely out of shape (Americans), and rooms could have a Minibar or a communal fridge to keep drinks cool
Nice property with beautiful gardens and views.
Bedding wasn’t changed, no simple food or hot beverage prep was possible in the room. Dogs barking every night.
It says on here that breakfast is 220 pesos, but in reality it's a la carte and quite expensive.
There was an infestation of red ants in my room and also that there are no mini fridges in the room to be able to keep cold drinks at least. The view is incredible and the property very quiet with a lot of greenery and birds and butterflies, but that's also because it is very far up the hill. On Booking it says it is 50m from the beach and it's definitely not, quite the hike to get between the beach and the hotel up in the hills.
The location.
It is not a hotel. Its an air bnb with one local woman on duty. Only Mexican spoken Our sheets were not changed in 6days and we were the only guests. Towels were nylon and changed to old cotton when i complained but with holes in . The open plastic bin was where we were expected to deposit used loopaper as its an ecohotel. Bare in mind this was changed once a day and the bathroom is open onto the bedroom. It is not sanitary. No fridge to keep water cool at 35 degrees. No tea or coffee facility. No wifi in the rooms. Staff there until 6 so after no water tea or coffee snacks available. It is a very steep climb on rough terrain with barking dogs and 64 steep steps and no bannister or lights at night. You have to be fit. If you order breakfast or meals you are expected to pay in cash on the dot and there are No banks nearby. An atm that kept running out. But the gardens and the view are spectacular.
The best view ever, spectacular. I love hanging out on the deck on a starry night, listening to the waves crash below. Very friendly, competent staff. Nice pool. Some reviewers complain that it is a long walk to the main road - true, however the website and other reviewers are clear about that going in. It is maybe 12 minutes, depending on your pace, and there are some steep stairs. OR you can rent a moto. Another complaint is about a dog at the top of the stairs. I had no issues with that dog, I just say hi and by the second time he pretty much ignored me.
Well, OK, the roosters get started pretty early :)
Tiny Boutique Hotel perfectly fitted into the hill. Beautiful view over the ocean. If you are lucky, you can see whales in the far distance.
There is nothing we did not like, but you should be aware a view things. The Hotel is up a hill and requires a 10-minute hike or an adventurous car ride up the hill. The pool is very small - good for refreshing but not big enough for swimming. The stairs are very steep, and WiFi coverage is limited (we did not have WiFi in our room).
Small hotel, personal attention. Great communication. All the staff very friendly and helpful. They were very kind and upgrade us to a larger room with no extra cost. Thanks Claudia and team for being great hosts
The hill up to the property is very demanding. The road up to requires excellent driving skills or a 4x4. The rooms are quiet dark and only small mirror above the sink which is positioned for tall people, i am 5.2 and i struggled a bit. A long mirror for the ladies would be very welcome
The hotel grounds are nice, but to reach the hotel you have drive through dusty, uneven roads and uphill. The A/C is a blessing to be able to sleep in the night if your room face the sun all day.
The shower head was too high and the water flows towards the shower curtain.
This gem has a warm, welcoming feel the minute you enter the door. A view of the sea, lush gardens, dipping pool, lots of sunbeds & big umbrellas. Claudia runs the place, cooks & cleans - always with a big smile. Food delicious, rooms spotless. Stone walls & floors, a/c, mosquito nets - super comfy place.
Cannot think of a thing!
👍🏽 great! The staff are very nice and prepare delicious food
Cleanness and the smell in the bathroom
great vibe, views stunning and very comfortable
walk uphill on rough road!
The view, quietness and the pool
The breakfast and option for drinks could be a bit better
Lovely view, food, people, swimming pool. It’s gorgeous.
The dirt road (by scooter) at night was super scary because guard dogs from surrounding houses charged at us multiple times. Our second room didn’t have a hammock like the others rooms.
The view is nice, though from our room you could only see a little bit of the sea in the distance. Incredible view of the night sky from the terrace of our room, though there was only one chair and a hammock. Friendly and helpful staff. Air conditioning in the room.
The photos are misleading. The hotel is at the top of a hill, and the only access is up an UNPAVED and UNLIT dirt road or a steep staircase along a construction site - about 10min uphill walk from the beach. There are at least two houses along the way with guard dogs who bark at you as you approach and run up to you as you walk past - the hotel staff said not to worry as they do not bite, which is hardly reassuring, and it is still scary especially in the dark. We asked for flashlights but none were available from the hotel - make sure you have a charged phone to use as a flashlight when you return to the hotel at night! We dreaded the walk back every day. Would not recommend for a solo traveller. The bathroom and toilet are in the same room as the bedroom with only a chest-height divider for privacy. This would have been fine if it was clear upfront, but in the photos this wall looks like it might be the headboard to the bed and the bathroom might be somewhere else. The shower curtain and enclosure aren’t watertight and water leaks everywhere in the room. No hot water in the shower. The hotel has weak wifi in the outdoor lobby area and no wifi at all in the room.
Location is really beautiful. Rooms are very nice and very comfortable bed
The place was beautiful with an amazing view. The staff was friendly and the place was clean and neat.
To get there was a bit of a challenge, specially because the taxi left us at the stair entrance and not at the front door which it was a bit of a hike plus our luggage did not help
The property had amazing views, pool and amazing service!
The hike up the hill, however the pool and views made it worth it.
pool, view and design
bathroom and location too high for walking and go to the center
Spectacular view. The nearby beaches are gorgeous. Genuinely friendly staff, I was sorry to go. This is a small, boutique hotel. I had breakfast twice, dinner once, all good. The pool was nice - this is a dipping pool, maybe 9 x 15 feet if that. I often am up late, and the view of the stars in the middle of the night was truly memorable. Beautifully kept grounds with all colors of flowers. Beautiful gliding birds over the property. The calm sound of surf day and night. I liked the walk to and from town, but there is some exercise involved! I only spoke spanish with the staff, if you do not speak spanish you might brush up on some tourist spanish.
There is indeed a barking dog at the top of the stairs that lead down to the beach. I am a dog lover, so I befriended it :) It is not a big dog lol, like 30 pounds, and the owner is friendly.
Breakfast and lunch meals were perfect and very reasonably priced. Staff was fantastic, very kind and helpful. Room and common area were extremely clean and the pool area was just perfect for beating the heat. Bed was super comfy and the AC and fan in the room worked well and weren’t noisy at all. Clean drinking water in the room everyday was a nice bonus.
The walk up is seriously tough. The main road is dry, dusty, uneven and long. The shortcut is 2 flights of unkept steps straight up and quite the hike. It’s doable, but it really makes you plan out your day to avoid the walk and makes walking to the beach a little more complicated. As clean as the rooms are there are nighttime critters. Ants and small centipedes were very common, spiders and a scorpion on one occasion. The bug net does the trick and keeps them out of the bed but the big critters can be a little uncomfortable if you aren’t good with bugs. Staff was extremely helpful in taking care of the big ones. If you’re looking for a completely non-nature, inactive stay this isn’t it.
View was great with yoga space on the rooftop for self practice. Nice rustic rooms which were cleaned thoroughly each day. lovely to have a hammock outside room, with light for night time. hot water in the shower, which was a surprise. kind staff. pool was fab!
Tough to get up to the hotel, either a 70 stone step set of stairs, or a winding dirt path with no lights. Can drive up on a scooter if a proficient rider, but if hadn’t had a bike would have struggled during the heat.
The gorgeous views, the pool, and the room were all quite stunning.
There is no way to have a nice cold drink in the night or a coffee early in the morning. I don’t agree with not having a bar fridge or complimentary coffee available especially when the location is so inconvenient. The climb up makes it difficult to pop over somewhere for a refreshment. It is leaves you with a stranded feeling. Also, they should install at least some solar lights to mark the path up. it can be dangerous at night.
gorgeous vistas and lovely pool
no complimentary coffee, no access to a cool drink or snack at night, no mini fridge in the room for your own supplies. the hotel is situated up very high, so you feel stranded without anything. seems crazy not to at least have a mini fridge. couldn’t even get ice! not very pleasant after a long and sweaty hike up!
amazing view and super kind and accommodating staff. the Pool is great for kids
all good
Nice place, clean and beautiful.
Too far away from beach, up a massive hill. Not good for a solo traveller
I loved the views. the room that we were in was beautiful. I liked that is was close to the beach.
The wifi is very sporadic even in the restaurant. I would suggest placing boosters on various levels. I feel coffee in the morning that guests have access to is a welcoming gesture. often we don’t eat breakfast but would enjoy a coffee. The coffee offered is basic and honestly should be basic complementary coffee. Implementing the two items above would permit for a more welcoming long term working vacation spot.
The air conditioning. The hot water in the shower and bathroom tap. The bed and mosquito screen.
Location up the hill was a little hard to get too. All the staff only spoke Spanish which made it a little harder for me to communicate. The online communication via the booking.com app was in English and prompt.
The staff and hotel manager are lovely and so so helpful. I am scared of dogs and there is one on the path that barks when you pass, but I asked the manager about it, they introduced me to the dog and after that I had no issues! The hotel is so lovely, it sits high on a hill so views are incredible and the place is calm and relaxing. They also have a yoga shala on the roof and mats you can borrow. It's really good value and worth it.
This is a small town in Mexico so there are some things that can't be controlled. We had a few small frogs in our room each night which we had to remove, but it wasn't really a problem and can't be controlled.
The view, the terrace, the pool, the amazing and helpful staff, the relaxation you can achieve here.
Nothing to dislike about this place.
Beautiful view.
The location given on Booking.com is very misleading, it is not the actual location of the hotel. The hotel is located at the top of a hill, via washed out dirt roads that were extremely difficult to drive up, and no signs whatsoever. Not navigable if it has been raining, or at night. The room was just a bed with a short pony wall behind it, with a shower and toilet. No door or wall, so if you’re using the toilet or shower, anyone in the room can see you. And while showering you have to be careful you don’t get the bed wet! Plus there is no berm or angle to the bathroom floor, so the shower water just ran out into the rest of the room, soaking some bags. Ridiculously overpriced for the shoddy room and super-inconvenient location.
quiet , A/C , friendly and welcoming staff , manager helped me with questions and transport , pool
bathroom was in same room like bedroom without doors .
Everything was fantastic, very beautiful hotel!!!
The bathroom is open...so you don't have privacy... I know is the new fashion for boutique hotels but I really need a wall in the bathroom 🤔
Sal De Mar is a beautiful retreat in San Augustinillo. We loved the room, views and pool area. It was very quiet and peaceful. The staff were lovely and accommodating even though we couldnt really speak Spanish, they were patient with us! The food was also really good (though note its not included in room rates). San Augustinillo itself is paradise, we loved the beach and town a lot more than neighbouring mazunte. Great for bodyboarding and learning to surf on small waves.
The wifi wasnt working for a few days which made it hard for us to do some work and organising our onward travels. To get to the hotel there is a fair climb up a hill and stairs. In the heat it can be quite tiring. Be sure to figure out the shortcut there, otherwise its a much longer and harder walk and theres some very unfriendly dogs in that area. The shortcut avoids them!
The hotel stands on a little hill just behind San Agustinillo. Many people describe getting there quite challenging, in our experience: any car can get to the hotel, and the walk involves some stairs if taking a small shortcut. It is nothing impossible and you need to consider this is a normal situation for the area. The hotel is very nice and the staff is very welcoming (not everyone speaks English). Amazing views and atmosphere, you can have good lunch breakfast or dinner by paying a small extra. It is important to also know that the area had a big hurricane some months ago that brought many damages to the hotel, and it was completely re built very well. This has made the road up a little more bumpy and left some small traces the staff is taking care of.
The walk to the hotel is a little dark at night, while during the day it can get quite hot. However, it is nothing impossible and it is safe. Many hotels are located in a similar position in town and it is the price to pay for the incredible view.
The views were incredible and the staff really nice.
If you are not in extremely good shape, avoid this hotel. Traveling on my own and with no car, this was a very bad option: first the road to walk to the hotel gave me goosebumps, specially after sunset (I had to use my phone to be able to see) and second, it is not an easy route (stairs, rocks, unpaved road…). Also the room seemed old: the paint is falling, there is humidity on the walls, the shower works poorly. It seems that it was a very nice hotel some time ago but it needs some updating. Plus, I couldn’t even use the pool (smaller than what it appears in the pictures) because they were using chemical products in it during my stay.
