Very kind staff who helped us with an early check in so we could get ready Lovely big room and nice shower
The location in Surbiton is very good, just two streets away from High Street with café's and shops. Friendly and helpful staff. Despite its central location it turned out to be a quiet place. The room was clean.
There was no Wifi and the pub did not have a coffee machine, which was a pity (both)
Excallent, friendly staff.
No breakfast on offer. Although they are working on it.
Location was great
Rooms need updated
Good location and very nice staff. Slightly outdated rooms which need some care, but overall a pleasant stay for the price.
Staff were very friendly and helpful
Small and a little airless
Clean sheets
Needs a good lick of paint Bits and pieces are fallen off in rooms and just left in corners Furniture is old cheep and blistering
Room was large, beds clean and comfortable, bathroom clean. Staff helpful and pleasant.
The PIN codes through the gates to get in is a bit of a nuisance and there are a lot of stairs to get up to the room. I needed my husband to figure out the gates and locks and carry the bags
Loved the staff they were amazing with a bunch of drunk people coming from a funeral! The accomodation is basic you get what you paid for in this area. Surbiton is a lovely place very close to London but very safe.
Small concern about the issue with the locked doors could get out with the passcodes? If there was an emergency but be an issue?
Quaint old pub that was value for money
The long climb up the stairs, small room but not unexpected. Parking was difficult if you arrive with a car
the location was good for what we wanted and the staff were very helpful and pleasant
no wifi which meant no t v. for my autistic children, one of the power points didn't work
The location
The room was ridiculously hot. The furniture was all falling apart. There was a big dirty stain on the rug that didn’t fit the room. There was mold in the shower. No fan.
The staff were so welcoming and lovely and went above and beyond
The amount of stairs and the fan didn’t work
The room was clean and comfortable
The place was a little scruffy, needs a little love and care. Also no hairdryer. Maybe buy one in case someone asks for one
Basic but clean and very comfortable. Perfectly good.
Great down to earth pub. Staff were very helpful and pleasant. Great vfm. Room well equipped
Very minor-card machine wasn't working so had to go out to get cash
Tea/coffee facilities excellent, bottles of water were much appreciated. Clean room and towels. Landlord was very thorough with instructions for coming and going and welcoming. Was reasonably priced and location was ideal for me
Room a bit tired, wall of bathroom had some mold or mildew. No hairdryer and although provided with a fan, the casing rattled too much so couldn't use and it was hot!
My husband and I loved the pub itself. Cozy and about what you would expect for London. The shower in the room was decent, pretty big as well. There were lots of restaurants in the area if you wanted to go find dinner. We were there during a hot weekend, and with the windows open, we could get air flowing in the room.
There was a smoker across the hall. I think the staff told him to cut it out. That was the only hindrance.
Great location, good pub with excellent beer garden, staff very friendly.
No negatives
The location. The staff were nice and friendly. The room was very clean. The shower was hot.
Nada. Reservé una habitación y el mismo día por la tarde, antes de llegar, me enviaron un mail comunicándome que había sido un error administrativo y que no tenía reserva.
Todo. Me dejaron completamente colgado, sin reserva y sin alternativa.
Good location
The bedroom reeked of cigarette smoke which was extremely unpleasant. The smell seemed to be coming in through the bathroom vent, which is why trying to ventilate the room with one window ajar was futile. The other window didn’t open at all. Additionally one of the lights didn’t work and the single pillow on the bed was extremely uncomfortable.
The room did the job I needed it for. Somewhere to sleep and located in a central position not far from Surbiton station. Handy for pubs in the area. A nice local British Cask Marque pub.
Nothing to report.
Was convenient for my travels
Getting to the room was a bit of a challenge.. you have to stay there to understand.
Staff really helpful and friendly
Room was really hot and fan didn't work well
The pub downstairs
The room was dirty and so hot no fans provided. Told by women cleaning room next door. It was difficult to purchase fans and people take them home! she would try and get one for us from another room? TV did not work previous guest had taken with them. Young man came to have a look but didn’t know what he was doing.
Bed was comfortable. Convenience to facilities. Tea and coffee making facility in room Room was clean enough
Room 8 at the top does not reflect the pictures on the website. Our recent stay was during very hot weather (34 degrees). Our Room had no air con but there was a fan. We could not open the window properly either. In front of the sash window the secondary glazing was broken and would not move. A panel was also leaning against the wall. Therefore trying to sleep at night was a challenge. There was no bedside lamps. The light above the shower did not work. The kitchen was out of action. I cannot vouch for the standard of the other rooms but based on our room only, in my opinion does not justify 3 stars. The place looks tired and and dated.
Room 2 was spacious and contained twin beds and 2 chairs and the ensuite was very clean and looked quite new. The room was cleaned daily and supplies restocked and the price was reasonable. The black lion is an 8 minute walk to Surbiton train station
We visited during a heatwave so the room was obviously very hot. It was just about possible to feel the fan if you sat right in front of it. We found one window always open at the top and the other stuck shut. The access out when the pub isn't open is round the back through 3 different codes doors so quite nerve wracking. There was no food as there was a problem with the kichen when we visited. It was only possible to speak to staff in the evening when they were behind the bar. The bathroom fan didn't come on and the shower was insufficient flow
Clean room nice pub
Room was a little small.
Friendly, good location and room. Nice pub
Didn’t seem to have a record of my booking but did kindly sort things eventually.
Nothing
I arrived on the day of my booking and initially the bar staff were not able to locate my booking in their appointment book. After phoning their boss I was told that they had plumbing issues and the last two rooms were affected and I couldn't stay at the pub. I then asked why I wasnt informed of this before (my name had been located by then). I was told something about the guy having heart issues and that he'd been unwell, very convenient and convincing. I was offered a stay in a different place, which was an additional 15 minute walk from the train station. The main reason I had booked this place was the close proximity to the station, as I was attending events over 2 days. The new place only had an en suite the first night, which also meant I had to move rooms after night 1. All in all it turned out to be a massive inconvenience and honestly sounded like a bit of a scam, i.e. they double-booked the place (probably for more money than I payed). Definitely cannot recommend!
I absolutely loved my short stay at the Black Lion Hotel. First of all, the atmosphere is great and the decor, traditional. The ambiance there is welcoming and very pleasant. Also, the young waitress who greeted me was absolutely lovely, welcoming, and helpful, which made my stay so much easier and even more enjoyable. I also met who I believe was the owner—or owners—and they were very warm as well. It is a very family-run hotel. Finally, the room was spotless with everything you could need provided. I will definitely come back for my next trip. Thank you!
Nothing
The dirt drunken owner filthy kitchen and general areas
Beds ok friendly nice staff
Needs a lot of cleaning and decorating stairs need more handles could be nice
Value for money was ideal 5 min walk to train, on a busy main road. Big room ( 2 single beds), no frills, dated, but perfect for leaving bag and being out all day.
n/a
Hot chocolate machine
Frendly cleaness nice room
All was good
Good location
Place seems run down, in places dirty, bedroom door jams, poor water pressure in shower, no WiFi in rooms etc. Needs some upgrades and attention.
Good location and price. Guiness
Basic but adequate for one night
When you look for a class hotel, don't go there But if you want a nice pub where you can sleep, it's perfect!
The room was comfy and cozy and room was worth the price.
Easy and simple to deal with. Very accommodating and happy to help.
All good from me.
Basic accommodation but a good sized room and the bathroom was clean and well equipped and it looked relatively newly fitted, so shower was good quality. Bed was comfortable and I got a good night's sleep overall. The accommodation is right in the centre of Surbiton with all of it's amenities and attractions right on the doorstep. Landlord and other staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming.
I stayed a Saturday night and there was live music on in the pub below which throbbed loudly through the floor until 11pm. So you might want to go out for the evening if it's music night and return when it's all over if you are not staying for the booked band. Having said that, the music stopped bang on 11pm and it was quiet after that, which was appreciated. Wifi signal was a little wavery in effectiveness but I just about managed to maintain what I needed to do.
Accepted he had made provision at another location
Arrived to find room not available due to plumbing issues
Booking confirmed on booking.com and money taken but on arrival the room had been given to someone else and no rooms available. Had to try and find somewhere else to stay at 8.30pm
Nothing, avoid this place
Loud, dirty, busy pub with an extremely rude owner. We arrived, waited politely and asked the waitress about our room. She said we did not have a reservation and asked her boss. He seemed overstressed and/or intoxicated. He immediately yelled at her. We stayed silent. Shortly after, and without me having the possibility to say a word , he started yelling in my face and at my daughter on which we had no other option than to leave. Clearly we did have a reservation as our money was taken and I was asked to write a review. Here it is!
Clean, safe. Good value for money
For the money it was perfectly fine. Good location.
Great location and a great pub. It was exactly what you'd expect at the price point.
Friendly bar staff
En-suite Bathroom was mouldy, the mouldy smell permeated the bedroom.
Clean and good location
Old and difficult access, but expected.
The bathroom was well equipped and shower was lovely. The beds were really comfortable and the room was spacious. TV worked well and appreciated the tea/coffee and bottles of water provided.
The room was boiling hot. They had provided a fan but it did not help much. We opened the windows but the road was noisy and it let in loads of bugs. No hairdryer provided.
Close to where we had to be.
It needed updating
Close to railway station. Clean quute room. Friendly staff above a good pub
Could not watch tv due to glitchy picture
Location is good near the train station, restaurants and stores..
No air condition in the rooms. Also no lift to use to get to the room.
Everything we need Fan was fab Tea coffee available in room and downstairs And lots of drinking water Quiet and clean. We enjoyed our stay
Needed more pillows but that's personal choice
Ingen frukost, men en kaffeautomat och kex fanns. Vattenkokare på rummet. Trevlig pub på hotellet. Mysig innergård att sitta och dricka morgonkaffet.
Spacious room in a building of character. Beds comfortable. Location close to train station.
Be aware of stairs only to access rooms .. but then again that is the character of the building. All good otherwise.
Good size room. Hot shower. Good location for Surbiton area. Good value for the facilities provided. Quiet area.
Nothing
Location was great for me
Would have liked a stronger internet connection
Location was good with easy access around downtown Surbiton services. Staff was friendly. Bed was comfortable.
Wi-Fi was very intermittent. Access to rooms is a consideration if you have any mobility issues. Booking said breakfast was included which was not true as there wasn't any cooking facilities on-site. Access in off-hours when pub is closed is difficult for an elderly person as you have to navigate through the back door and gardens, which can be a bit of a struggle.
Good size room and quiet
● The staff are friendly and helpful; ●The bed is comforable; ● The environment was quiet at night.
● The room is no writing desk; ●The staircase is quite narrow, making it hard to carry a large suitcase up and down stairs; ●The bath exhaust fan produces noise, requiring me to switch it off when sleeping.
Very central, all the staff were very friendly and helpful, thank you.
Very old
Personnel peu aimable. Chambre vétusté. Fenêtre et porte qui ferment difficilement voire pas. Mauvaise odeur , moisi? Détergent,?
Clean warm
The room was spacious and the shower was nice and fully enclosed. I particularly enjoyed the free access to the hot cocoa machine downstairs..
Many of the power sockets didn't work, nor did the floor fan they provided. I was able to drown out the noise from the pub downstairs with white noise. I had to close the windows at night to cut the sound of the cars on the road.
Good location and cheap for the area Bathroom was modern and the water bottles and biscoff were a nice touch staff seemed friendly
It was a bit scruffy with damage to the ceiling and a crack in a window pane carpets were worn but clean
We enjoyed our stay but didn’t realise there was Wifi available. Couldn’t remember seeing any info. It was in a convenient location for us to visit family though and easy to connect with bus and trains for days out.
Great experience, it was clean and comfortable and the staff were so friendly. We arrived a bit early and were able to check in before going to Twickenham. £7 Uber away and we were in Kingston. Perfect for rugby day, would thoroughly recommend.
Basic clean accommodation
Having to enter codes on three different doors, some with Roman numerals after a few pints was like trying to get out of an escape room
All
NO
Comfy beds and nice powerful shower. Cafe across the street for a good breakfast
Great room; met all my needs- clean, comfortable, and the location was perfect. I really enjoyed exploring Surbiton- you can really tell how community oriented it is; what a lovely place!
