“The only downside is that the experience can depend quite a bit on the other guests staying at the same time. On our first night, there were a few people who were quite noisy and slammed doors, which made it less comfortable. So depending on who else is there, you might have an amazing stay or a slightly noisier one.”

Reviewed Apr 11, 2026Lovely character house. Beautiful beach directly across the road. Plenty of bathrooms throughout the house and fully equipped kitchen. Wish we could have stayed longer but we will definitely be back. So close to everything if you are exploring Northland.

Reviewed Mar 21, 2026The location was at the right place in our trip, to stop and sleep. We are 40+ aged travellers who usually stay at 4+ star hotels. Shared bathrooms, rooms full of double bunks and a communal kitchen isn't our comfort zone, but I understand for backpackers, this could be a mangagable stay.
On arrival we got some "weird vibes" by the one of the owners (the other one was lovely). Felt like a money-grab-for-cash, with no greeting, hospitality or care offered. They absolutely pack each room with max occupants. I understand that young people need cheap accommodation, but I would be uncomfortable if my child stayed here more than a night.

Trying to get down steep stairs in the dark, a few pans could do with replacement as very scratched. Had hoped to be able to use pizza oven but seems to only be run at set times.

Well equipped kitchen, a dishwasher and washing machines ($5 NZ) washing line available. Outside or inside eating tables. Lovely garden to sit in to relax.
It’s a lovely old heritage building so it creaks and has character.

Unfortunately two car loads of locals decided to compete squealing tyres as they drove in circles in front of the property. Once they settled down they turned their music up and we could hear it banging until really late in the night. What could have been ocean waves turned into clouds beats into the night.

Reviewed Feb 13, 2026Die Lage. Erstaunlich sauber für so viel Nutzer des Gemeinschaftsbades und der Gemeinschaftsküche.
Das Haus ist unglaublich laut, eher so was wie eine Jugendherberge für Alte mit Doppelzimmer. Man muss es mögen, dass man sich im Flur mit 6 Zimmer ein Badezimmer teilt und niemand die Zimmertüren festhält, sondern (Holz auf Holz) zuschäppern lässt. Ja, es gibt im Haus verteilt 4 Badezimmer, aber auch das muss man mögen, mogens/nachts durch Haus zu wandeln, um ein freies Bad zu finden. Da ist dann eine Gruppe, die die Küche in Beschlag nimmt und am späteren Abend aufwendig kocht, die Küchentür bleibt auf und Duft Geräuchpegel zieht durchs Haus. Wie gesagt, man muss es mögen dann ist man hier gut aufgehoben.

Reviewed Jan 22, 2026A welcoming backpackers lodge across the road from the beach. The kitchen is well-stocked and organised and the bathrooms are clean. There’s a great deck out the back with lots of seating, a bbq & pizza oven. We stayed in a twin room which was private for a couple. The beds were comfortable with linen private. There was a bathroom right next door. Highly recommend.

Reviewed Jan 21, 2026The beach is fabulous, and directly across the road. This lodge is a historic building with some very nice features and is obviously looked after. There is some parking on site, and the host made sure to check that I was able to park my car. Met their cute dog. Lots of furniture around outside for relaxing. Kitchen seems well equipped. Lots of really pleasant outdoors space for sitting/eating/hanging out.
We weren't given towels. Not sure if that was a mistake or what. The room I booked, private twin, was nicely fresh and the beds were comfortable but it got really hot and to get enough air moving through with the fan meant letting in a lot of light. Also the light form behind the room was very strong and the curtain didn't block it (If you need dark to sleep, don't book this room!). The nearest bathroom (toilet and shower)was very nice, but like shared bathrooms, is subject to other customers taking some care and hopefully not being in there for long durations. We didn't have great luck in that regard. The lock on the door for this room is a latch on the inside or a combination lock on the outside, a little tricky with 2 people sharing a room. I booked this because of rave reviews. Paid NZ $130 for one night in a twin room, which in retrospect seems like a lot for compared to other great hostels and very nice motels we have been in (disregarding the towel situation) but perhaps that is what you pay for this location?

Reviewed Jan 12, 2026Das historische Haus ist liebevoll gepflegt und sehr geschmackvoll eingerichtet. Es gibt genügend Badezimmer für alle. Die Gastgeber sind äußerst freundlich und hilfsbereit. Es gibt wunderbare Außenbereiche und man kann in Kontakt mit den anderen Gästen kommen, wenn man möchte. Der Strand direkt gegenüber ist wunderschön. Der Aufenthalt war für uns etwas Besonderes.
Nur ein Detail: Mehr Haken für die Kleidung im Zimmer wären praktisch.

Reviewed Jan 4, 2026Lovely house a stones throw away from 90 mile beach. Easy to find and park. Host was very quick at getting about to you and welcoming you in. Only niggle was that it was noisy. The floors and bed creak & doors bang, if you are a lite sleeper this keeps you up. There's no TV in the room, so you cannot just chill in the own space after a long drive.
