Reviewed Aug 13, 2026We loved the stay. Beds very comfy and the renovations and facilities very well done.
The soundproofing could have been done a little better. Our neighbour was snoring very loudly and we could hear every sound. There was a group of school children that was running up and down the hallway, laughing and screaming. My husband had to eventually step in to silence them. The adults that was in charge of chaperoning them didnt do very well...would be good to have a staff member around to enforce rules... especially if big groups are booked in to make sure the rest of the guests are also respected.

The shared bathrooms are actually really impressive, and it felt fun seeing all the families hanging out like a big sleepover vibe

The common areas were a bit sparce and cold. Curtaining, throws and heating would help make this warmer in the winter months like a lodge.

Its size was small, but given the huge common areas, it was perfect. It was really a big surprise to find such a place where one has to spend more than one night!

Nothing really, but I think maybe the idea of having a door open throughout the night that is accessible from outside makes us feel kinda paranoid by the idea that anyone can come in, other than guests? I'm sure the area is safe but I guess that can be one thing improved? It's just that extra sense of security and safety.

Al momento del check in non c'era nessuno. Una delle ospiti mi ha indicato la presenza di una busta in cui c'era la chiave della mia camera all'interno di una bacheca annunci. La camera era troppo piccola, con muri sottilissimi: si sentiva perfettamente tutto quello che succedeva nella zona comune e la coppia nella camera a fianco fare sesso. Mancava il phon e la mattina del check out la struttura era freddissima. Pessimo customer care ed in generale pessima esperienza.

It is such a hidden gem, I loved the manager she was very lovely,, and the cleaning staff were amazing the place was spotless, they do a very thorough job. Loved the beautiful views from the common areas. Its very spacious and has many living areas so my kids had plenty room to relax and not confined to one area. Kitchen was in very good condition, clean pots and cutlery. Overall, excellent place to stay and great value for money.

Reviewed Jan 6, 2026I found the lodge a peaceful and relaxing place to stay. Whilst our room was of modest size with shared facilities, the twin beds were comfortable and the place was spotless. Common areas were nicely furnished, well maintained and clean. I never had any wait for a shower or toilet. The kitchen had an indoor and outdoor eating space. The lodge is within walking distance to the lake and the local shops. We stayed here because of its proximity to Purehoe regional park.
There wasn't anything I disliked.

I understand there is not a lot of business in Mangakino so expected the price to be high, but it was twice the price of Rotorua hotel for two nights for the one night we stayed at Maraetai.

Our room (#15) was between the men's bathroom and the private flat with the shower right next to our room, so inbetween 2 bathrooms. And right next to the reception. With the walls thin enough to hear people showering, using the toilet (!!) and doors slamming. A room like this shouldn't be used as a guest room. Better make it a storage room.
