Hostel Yui-an

Everything! This place is simply stunning. Hiro has done an amazing job on the restoration of the old farm house and you can appreciate the thought that has gone into many of the details. Joshua was very welcoming and served us homemade plum wine after our hike. We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and the recipe books. Dinner was delicious and Rey hosted us over dinner and explained the sake tasting we appreciated. We had a few more sake's while chatting with the very lovely Rey. Thank you so much for your hospitality and calm energy Rey, Joshua, Hiro and Sayo. The cat was entertaining too! We also enjoyed the extra walk up the hill although we did have a pick up originally booked.

Decor

Strange energy felt like we were at a strict school lights out at 930 didn’t feel welcome we were going to stay to hike more but couldn’t bare the vibe. food was edible only if u were starving - i would only recommend going if u have your own car so u can get around as its 6km from station

Beautiful place location and amazing family running it

We stayed here for one night on our hike of the Nakasendo Trail. Without a doubt the best accommodation of our holiday. Our room was comfortable and our hosts very kind. It's clear that Rey and Hiro have put so much love and thought into every aspect of the farmhouse renovation. It makes for a beautiful place to stay. When you add the delicious dinner and sake tasting our stay was perfect, much better than staying in Nagiso town. Hiro picked us up from Nagiso Station on our tired legs after we had walked from Magome. This meant we could set off for our next days walk to Nojiri from right on our route, and got to skip some climbing!

Nothing. Everything was great!

Beautiful, secluded location, with gorgeous traditional interior. The owners have done an amazing job with decorating in a calming style with Wabi Sabi elements.

Such a peaceful and unique stay. Amazing owners, amazing time. Would love to come back again.

Everything. The hospitality, the beauty, the care. Everything is simple but so thoughtful. We were supposed to stay one night but we decided to stay two, and I would have stayed longer if I could. Really magical Thank you

Heerlijk! En het uitzicht was prachtig

Exceptionally accommodating to even small requests, very serene and calm, good people.

The attention of the owners on every detail. Kind persons and super nice with everyone

Nothing

Hostel Yui-an reminded us of being in a Studio Ghibli set. The artistic touches , incredible collection of books and connection to nature made leaving this beautiful space hard to leave. Our stay here was sandwiched between two traditional ryokan stays and our entire family enjoy the variety that this space added to our visit to Japan. The meals were delicious and made with great care. The host family is welcoming and kind. If you are discouraged by it being out of the way, don’t be. It is worth it and the hosts make it possible to get to/ from the Nagiso station easy with a shuttle. We walked from Magome and though long, that was our preference and it could have been shorter if we’d taken the shuttle.

Traditional, clean and welcoming

Probably one of our highlights in Japan. The house is beautifully decorated, exceptionally clean and the hosts made us feel at home. I wish we could have stayed another night there.

If one had to distill everything special about Japan into one expression, this is it. The sensory experience, the design, the hospitality, the beauty, the food, the zen ambience and the views.

Nothing.

This is one of the most peaceful places we ever stayed in :) The location is so beautiful, with an amazing view that you could sit and admire all day. The house, which the hosts built themselves, is lovely, and all the facilities are top-notch. Everything was spotless, and there were so many thoughtful little touches. You can really tell how much care has gone into every detail. The host family is wonderful, and their daughter was especially sweet with our baby. In general, we had a great time staying here with a baby, which is really not something we take for granted. They had books and toys for him, and for both dinner and breakfast (which were excellent and definitely worth booking!), they prepared special food for him and provided a high chair. We loved our stay and wish we could have stayed longer. Highly recommend!

Hostel Yui-an is a truly special property. It has traditional Japanese architecture combined with thoughtful attention to detail, creating a beautiful and peaceful space. It was clear that a lot of love has gone into preserving and designing the property. If you appreciate authentic accommodations with a lot of character rather than a standard hotel, this is a wonderful choice.

The only aspect that fell short for us was the hospitality. While we enjoyed our stay and loved the property, we found the owner to be noticeably less warm and welcoming than we experienced elsewhere in Japan.

Amazing location, the owner graciously picked us up from the station which was easy to arrange, and drove us up the hill which was fantastic otherwise it would have been a solid uphill walk. The farmhouse is beautifully renovated and the assistant Erica was lovely. She told us all about the area, the project and life in rural Japan in general. We had a great dinner and a very comfortable night's sleep before being driven back to the station the next morning. Would highly recommend.

Everything was fantastic.

We had an unforgettable stay at Hostel Yui-an. The surrounding nature is breathtaking, the homemade food was delicious, and the hostel had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Erica's warmth and hospitality made this place truly special. She welcomed us like friends and shared so much about herself, Japan, its traditions, and everyday life. Those conversations became one of the most memorable parts of our trip. And a special hello to little Sayo – thank you for all the fun we had playing together at the breakfast table! We wish you lots of smiles and happiness. We hope to visit you again someday. Thank you for everything! ❤️

It was just perfect!

We loved the house itself! So well cared for, a beautiful view, kind hosts, and delicious food. We’d absolutely go back.

Nothing, it was all great.

The view, the house, the family, the meals

Everything at Hostel Yui An is so perfect! We've stayed in all kinds of places on our trip to Japan and this one has been the best by far. It's utterly beautiful, hand crafted, perfectly curated, special, calming, comfortable and with the most wonderful view across the mountains. Rey is the loveliest host and I just cannot recommend it highly enough. Book NOW!

Nothing. Literally nothing!

The view from the deck is stunning. Sunset was gorgeous! I enjoyed the conversations with Rey and Hiro as well as the chef whose name I can't remember. Hiro and Rey have created a beautiful space in an old farmhouse. So quiet and peaceful. Hiro picked us up for free from the Nagiso Station. We paid for dinner and breakfast. Both were delicious-- chicken curry with rice from local farmers. Breakfast with homemade apple plum jam. The music was calming. Beds were cozy. Easy to walk the Nakasendo trail from here. Would love to see the fireplace lit during the winter. Must be so cozy.

The room could be aired out a bit. But besides that it was an incredible stay!

The property was beautiful the experience authentic the location and views stupendous. Warm host and hostess Awesome all round

Authentic beautifully appointed and setting stupendous

This hostel is stylish and charming and has everything we needed. The staff were efficient and very amenable. The photos online don’t do it justice. It is a lovely place. It is situated on the Nakasendo Way as it leaves Nagiso heading for Nojiri. We were picked up at the station and the drive saves us some climbing and a few kilometres walking.

Beautiful space. The kindest hosts. I wish we had arrived earlier to spend more time enjoying the environment. The veggie curry dinner was delicious.

I can’t think of anything, it was a great stay.

What a great find! A very sweet place run by a sweet family. It was another 2 hours walk beyond Tsumago (we walked from Magome) so this was in all a 16km walk for us but we made it there, reaching at 4.45pm having started at 10.30am, very slowly with a Tsumago lunch stop. The place is quite remote but that was the beauty of it. The staff who checked us in was super friendly and provided all the information we needed for our next day's walk. Our particular room was on the ground floor with own shower room but the toilets are in common area. The common areas are spacious and tastefully furnished. Meals are at a bar counter. We ordered sausages (they were out of this world) and a beer, to tide us to dinner which was at 7pm. Dinner was simple but tasty. There was another couple staying that night so we had a nice chat about our travels, together with the host. Place looks better than photos. Gorgeous view at the common deck. Breakfast is simple but all one needs before a continuing walk (we headed to Nagiso (12km) for the train to Kiso-Fukushima. Started walk at 10am at check out and made it in good time for ramen lunch few mins from train station which is very small, no food, & train at 2.52pm). Place is super clean. Nothing to worry.

Nothing!

A beautiful ticked away traditional farmhouse with very friendly and accomodating staff

Nothing. We loved everything

Great location. Views and Nakasendo trail.

Although the staff were polite we disliked being treated, not like guests, but like pupils.

Staying at Hostel Yui-An was truly the highlight of our trip. The building is decorated beautifully and feels so homey. Dinner was very comforting and the sake tasting they offer is a cool experience. The owners and staff are very kind and accommodating and picked us up from Nagiso station. 10/10, would recommend to anyone.

N/A

The property is a restored 200 year old building that integrates modern comforts with traditional Japanese elements. The owners are kind and it feels like you are staying at their home, but with complete privacy in spacious surroundings.

The place had unique character and atmosphere and a beautiful surrounding view. The location is extremely convenient for hikers of the Nakasendo Trail as it is already on the trail, but you also have the option of pick up from the train station. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. It's possible to book a delicious handmade dinner and breakfast, which is definitely recommended.

Nothing!

The view, the staff, lots of charm, comfortable beds, clean. Great communication. Offer lifts to fro station.

Communal bathroom and toilets but very clean and not busy even when hostel is full.

Absolut ingenting

Amazing location along the Nakasendo trail. Very personalized details and cozy atmosphere in the hostel and everyone else was travellers on the trail. Very great breakfast and dinner meals available too. My partner got sick the first day on the trail and they were very accommodating!! Very nice hosts and staff

I loved that it’s so well curated inside, and that it’s so peaceful outside. The owners are also very kind

The setting, the welcoming hosts, the beautiful 200yo building. Everything was magical!

Nothing, the stay was perfect and everything I’d hoped it would be.

Cute mountain ryokan with very kind and friendly staff. Had such a special time staying here and want to go back asap. The homemade plum wine is amazing and they have lots of great local sakes. They offer pickup and drop off from the local station which is very helpful given the location is quite remote. They have a soaking tub available for 400¥ per hour.

The hostess Erica was so kind and friendly. The dinner and sake were amazing and the view was stunning.

A truly unique and stunning place to stay. Everything about it is perfect. If you can make it work - book it.

We had the best night at Hostel Yui-an. It's a family owned and run hostel. It had such a calm, relaxing vibe and the loveliest staff. Dinner was very tasty! It also has a brilliant view from the balcony. I would recommend this to anyone. We spent a night while walking the nakasendo trail, it was perfect for us.

Nothing

We loved the view, the old building, the hosts, and everything about the property. The old house is so gorgeous. Dinner was delicious, and the sake flights were fun. The wooden bath was so nice to soak in after two long days of hiking. We enjoyed talking with the hostess who helped us plan a different hike since there was a detour on the one we we were going to so. We left directly from the hotel and started our hike the next morning via the Yogawamichi Path. It was a fantastic hike to Nojiri, just be cautious of the limited train times. It was by far our favorite stay in Japan! While this stay was a little more expensive than some other options, it was well worth it!

Wow!! Staying here felt like a dream. Such a beautifully designed space, incredible hospitality (and fun sake tasting) shown to us by Erica, delicious home cooked dinner and breakfast, and just a privilege to stay in such a historic and comfortable space. Wish we had multiple nights! Easy pickup/drop off options from Nagiso Station. If you’re one of the lucky few that get to stay here (<10 people per night), do it!!

Nothing at all, perfect stay!

dinner and breakfast, the beautiful house, the welcoming staff

Beautiful traditional Japanese inn, very friendly and helpful staff, excellent food and drink available (extra cost) and perfect location for anyone walking the Nakasendo.

All was great.

Quiet and relaxed vibe. Friendly and attentive staff. Amazing interior decor.

An amazing 200-year old house overlooking the valley. So charming with attention to detail, lots of books, textiles and woodwork, made by the host family. I also love the sustainability - they use rice grown in the same village, eggs from their chicken and plums from their garden for umeshu. One of the most wonderful houses I have ever stayed at!

We had a lovely stay at hostel Yui-an! Would recommend it!!

the place is beautiful with an amazing view.

we were not impressed with the food but it was overall good. just not amazing.

Staff

Lovely home, excellent service

It was a 200 year old place but with modern amenities and a view that was amazing.

Such an attractive farmhouse to stay in. Our bedroom was very traditional with warm and comfortable bedding. The evening meal, served up at the kitchen bar, was simple and delicious. We shared this with another couple and we all chatted happily with our lovely friendly cook and hostess Erica. Breakfast was a very casual, help-yourself from the side table affair where guests mingled and chatted. A good selection in the Continental style. It was rainy so the views didn't do justice to the outlook over the garden and valley which must be stunning in fine weather.

We loved our stay. Travelling with a small child, we were all made to feel so welcome. Beautiful setting and home!

Great location in the valley, very friendly hosts and staff.

This is an exceptional place. The owners have with a great eye for the details renovated an old farmhouse. They and their employees are very thoughtful and we had a great chat in the evening. This is an absolute gem and was a highlight of our japan trip so far. We had the chance to witness the process of making soysauce (shoyu) which they to together with their neighbours once year. A very authentic glimpse of rural japan.

Tolles Haus in super Lage. Sehr geschmackvoll und authentisch.

Essen kein Highlight und kleine Portionen. Sake Testing war nett.

The house beautiful! Erica was an amazing host/chef. The room was huge! I can't recommend this place enough!

Literally nothing was bad

One of the most beautiful stays I’ve ever had. The attention to detail on the property is bar none. The hospitality, food and comfortable rooms were amazing.

Stunning converted farmhouse. Up in the mountains, fair way from the station, but the family provides a shuttle service.

Nothing, I loved it. Shared toilets but very clean and not a problem.

Absolute highlight of our trip. Totally gorgeous building and the staff were wonderful. Incredible view of the mountains. Food was fantastic and the sake tasting was a plus! Shuttle from Nagiso was super easy too.

Nothing

I loved how this was up in the mountains in the woods with amazing views both inside and out. I felt like I was in a different time period but also extremely comfortable. The bath was great, the bed was great, the food was great, and the company was great. Amazing staff that can really help you with your trip. Would love to stay multiple nights here in the future.

Not the easiest to get to but they do have a shuttle service so they can pick you up no matter where you are. I was hiking so I was not interested in the service.

Beautiful, warm space. Excellent hosts. A great dinner and breakfast. And an incredibly adorable cat lounging around.

Beautiful property & very unique house. We were collected from Nagiso Station & driven to the house. Erica was our wonderful host & is a real asset to this special place. Delicious dinner, sake tasting & good breakfast. We walked out the door straight onto the Nakasendo Trail.

Not a big deal, but there is a (lovely) cat that resulted in some allergies for us.

The house is a stunning renovated japanese house and the staff was extremely welcoming and easy to talk to. It is located along the nakasendo trail, so it is perfect for people who plan on hiking the Nenoue pass! But they also offer pick-up from nearby stations. They also serve food and drink at their own restaurant, which were really affordable and extremely delicious. I would honestly just want to stay here for a couple of days and enjoy slow life in the mountains.

None

This was an AMAZING experience! The hosts were so kind and also gave us our space. The home cooked meal was delicious. The house and setting are absolutely beautiful. The bed was comfortable and warm. The bathing facilities were up to a high standard. We will be coming back to stay again in this serene slice of heaven! If you're looking for a peaceful, beautiful, calm space that feels like home, stay here!.

It made me nervous when they asked me to scan my passport but I found out that everywhere in Japan does this. There was nothing about this stay I did not like.

View wa amazing, the whole house is beautiful, is a little dream house with the most amazing views.

the house is a bit far away from Nagiso station and their transport possibility is a bit rigid. So unless you time it really well, the most probable is you end up having to pay a taxi from the station to the accomodation.

Beautiful stay with a wonderful ambience and very hospitable staff, mainly the kind lady who served us dinner and answered any and all questions we had about Japan etc.. Felt incredibly peaceful, authentic and separated from the noise associated with japans major cities.

My only qualm is having to pay for extra amenities like dinner/breakfast (the latter which was very underwhelming) granted you’re already paying quite a lot for the accommodation. That being said, I’d do it again and again if I was promised a similar experience.

Absolutely beautiful location, super helpful and communicative staff, good food. Even saw a tanuki!!

Would highly recommend. Gorgeous mountain setting, beautiful, old, comfortable farm house, lovely people and great food. A highlight of our trip to Japan.

Lovely home cooked curry and good breakfast.

Nothing - place was excellent

The house is spacious and meticulously decorated with an eye to style, charm, and a quirkiness that was utterly delightful. You have access to a guests' kitchen, a library, a seating area, and a dining area, as well as a small patio with a view of the valley. Just gorgeous.

It was beautiful, historic, and very well run. The staff was incredibly friendly and spoke amazing English. It was so enjoyable to be able to interact with the staff and the other guests staying at the hostel. The food and drink was also delicious.
