The campervan was 35 years old but ran perfectly. Plenty of admirers when we arrived at camp park.
Nothing
What an absolute nightmare of a trip—well, after the first week anyway. I actually enjoyed staying in the van at first, but sharing such a tiny space with someone who packed like we were going on a three-month expedition? Not for me. That said, I loved the freedom of being able to park just about anywhere. Falling asleep and waking up to a new view every day was magic. And thank God the Irish are a friendly bunch—I came close to getting clamped or fined €150 more times than I’d like to admit, all thanks to that dodgy “park4night” app. It was still good fun, even with everything that went wrong. Not the van’s fault. I felt like a proper trooper driving it around, blasting Iron Maiden. Killer sound system, by the way. 🤘
Didn’t quite match the pictures—this van’s clearly seen some things. It’s pretty beaten up, with a lot of wear and tear, bits hanging off, and it was far from clean. Found someone’s old broken tooth in the ashtray, which was... a moment. 😂 If you’re shy about strangers catching a glimpse while you’re changing, I’d suggest bringing your own curtains—unless, like me, you’ve already surrendered your dignity. That said, I actually enjoyed driving around in a beaten up old van. The views were amazing, and they can be even better if you plan your stops well. Ireland has so many stunning places to explore. Just don’t come into it with sky-high expectations. And let’s be honest—if you are here, your expectations probably aren't that high.
It was good to get back and drive the vintage again. Real feeling of traveling.
Great way to travel Dublin
Great staff, zero hassle and very affordable hire. Darren was great from start to finish.
Na
Van leaked from rain. Everything saturated and wet. Unable to contact anyone to return van. Stayed in a motel and used it as a car. Returned van earlier and no Refund or apology.
Myself,my partner and our two dogs rented a campervan from Retro camping for 4 nights and headed down the west coast of Ireland. The campervan was clean, and there was lots of space for everything we needed. It was easy to drive and was great on fuel. We enjoyed our few days in the likes of Galway , Mayo and Sligo all beautiful places. Would definitely be renting a campervan from Retro camping again as the staff are lovely and the campervan was a great experience.
Retro campervan and management were brilliant with me and would strongly recommend them
Retro old type campervan was very comfortable and Van was very reliable and strong and easy to drive
We rented the Ford Transit Grande for a road trip with six people, and everything went really smoothly. The van was spacious, comfortable, and worked perfectly for a group trip. Communication with the rental company was easy and pleasant – they were quick to respond and helpful throughout the process. Everything was well-organized from start to finish. Would definitely recommend if you're traveling with a group and looking for something reliable and practical.

We had an amazing time with this vintage 1994 camper van. It’s full of character and charm, and brought a real sense of adventure to our trip. It’s not a brand-new vehicle, of course, but that’s part of what made it so special. Perfect for anyone who appreciates a more classic, laid-back travel vibe.
Really great experience for a reasonable price! Great way to see the country! Beautiful wee wagon, full of character, hard not to get attached!
Good reasonable cost and basic but good friendly service
This was a van
lovely to drive by yourself and pick random spots to camp
nothing
We travelled to Ireland and planned to use a campervan primarily to enjoy the freedom that a campervan can offer. The stunning views, villages and cities that Ireland has to offer, which were made more accessible and enjoyable with the flexibility a campervan could offer!
Unfortunately, the campervan was not in best shape. A burst hose-pipe risked cutting short the trip, with other issues related to the vehicle's gearbox also acting up during our 5 day rental period. While some things can happen despite best preparations, it felt that the campervan fell far short of the expectations, with a rusted hole around the windscreen also meaning that some of our belongings got wet overnight. Apart from this, it became apparent that there are policies in place related to top speed of the vehicle. While in the vehicle there is a sticker with an apparent speed limit, there was no where noted in the terms and conditions that this top speed is the limit with which the vehicle can be driven, It emerged that the company monitors and tracks your whole trip, while imposing a fine that were not aware of from their end (it was not a speeding ticket, rather a company imposed fine to going over a speed limit that they imposed).
Ireland is beautiful and the ability to free camp in a camper van is great.
Retro camper hire offered me a €50 refund if I posted a 10 star review, they are paying for their good reviews!! I was overcharged for bedding by €30 and after driving for 5 hours we discovered we weren’t even given pillows. I ended up paying 40 euros per person to rent a dirty sleeping bag. I contacted Retro camper hire about this and asked for a refund and they stopped communicating with me after 2 emails. During our 6 day rental the van broke down twice. The accelerator cable snapped due to it being bodged with a bicycle brake cable and we had a blow out on a rear tyre. After the blow out I realised that the tyre was defective when we picked it up from them. The tyre blow out ended up costing me nearly 700 euros. Eventually I became so concerned about the state of the van so I had a good look over it as would do if I was inspecting a customer’s car. (I am a car mechanic) I found lots of problems due to very poor cheap fixes, the worst being with the suspension and steering, the vehicle should not be on the road, it is dangerous. I have tried to write up everything here that I found wrong but with only 1991 characters, there isn’t enough space. From a comfort point of view, the beds are tiny, only 60cm wide and very uncomfortable, bear in mind the drivers seat makes up half of one of the beds, despite the vehicle having a mk5 transit face-lift conversion, this vehicle is actually a mk4 transit so the drivers seat is almost 40 years old – would you want to sleep on a 40 year old mattress? The bed on the drivers side isn’t full length as the steering wheel is in the way. The privacy curtain has been moved from the windscreen to just behind the front seats, this means the curtain is dangling across your waist when you’re lying down and the curtain is pulled across. The pop up roof leaks onto the right hand side bed when it rains and it pops up when driving in windy conditions. From reading other reviews we are not the only ones to have this type of experience.
Freedom to roam and stay where you like comfortably and flexible. Pickup and return was really easy and the staff was kind and helpful.
Fridge position. Need to watch out for your head.
We did not receive clear instructions on how to set up the campervan, the table was broken and we could not use it, the tv did not work, the remote had disintegrated batteries in it, it was not clean and the drivers side would not open with the key, we had to open it from the inside. It was definitely not worth the price we paid.
These vans are exactly as stated, real head turners and its great to see them still on the roads. Just be mindful that there may be no power steering and can be a little difficult to manoeuvre.
Only issues arrived after the return of the vehicle. Deposit came back 15 days after drop off after they claimed it was processed already (which wasnt the case). Wont be using again due to the customer service.
The freedom to be able to go where you want we had a great week travelling around if you can go without luxury, it is a retro van so not very comfortable.
Toilet and shower facilities did not work, water tank was leaking from day one. Refilled it but no use. Disappointed as I had specifically requested these facilities on board..which meant we had to stay in more campsites than wild camp as needed to be near facilities. Fridge was temperamental, only worked sometimes. Missing switches for fridge and cooker..was still able to use gas with lighter. The van needs maintenance work, I know they are old but could do with a revamp..cheaper than most other companies but disappointing when you pay and request for something you don't get..doesn't start up easily- again retro van. If you can put these things aside and not allow them spoil your holiday which we managed to do it was a good experience as we made it out own and made lots of memories. Check in and out was easy enough but staff did try charge extra for parking which said was covered on site. This was a hassle as I had to find and show staff where it had said that. This distracted me from checking van over thoroughly before setting off and made me feel uncomfortable. Staff were a bit disorganised in that regard. Checkout was self service as it was Sun so had to wait on deposit but did receive no problem couple days later.
Very kind People and a nice campervan! We really enjoyed exploring beautiful Ierland.
We had a fun time driving around Ireland in our campavan. It is a great way to see the country and although it really was a "retro" vehicle, with its prime firmly behind it, we were aware of this and therefore it met our expectations.
It wasn't the easiest to drive, simply because of the age of the vehicle, and it wasn't the lap of luxury, but this was all part of the fun of camping for a week.
The folks at Retro Camper Hire are friendly and supportive. Though old and somewhat tatty and noisy, Betsy the van got us around, and we became fond of her. Overall, despite the various problems with the van, we enjoyed the experience. We are keen to have a campervan holiday again - though we'd likely be looking to pay a bit more for a more up to date and reliable model. The girl at reception was polite, cheerful, helpful, and the pick up was quick and easy, as was the drop off. We had a problem when the radiator sprang a leak, and phoned support. The guy there was very reassuring and helpful. It was clear we couldn't fix the leak ourselves, and he said to call out the AA. We actually wanted to carry on, rather than have our holiday disrupted by the van being taken to a garage, so he allowed us to carry on driving by topping up the radiator and keeping an eye on it. And he phoned back later to check we were OK. And we were allowed extra time for dropping off the van on the last day because we had to stop a couple of times to put more water in. Betsy appears to be the oldest van the company have. It also appears to be the cheapest one to hire. You pays your money and makes your choice. With a positive attitude yourself, and support from the company, Retro Camper Hire can make for a cheap and memorable experience.
Betsy, our van, was old. The driver's seat was stuck in the highest elevated position, which made reaching for the hand brake quite a challenge! The side mirrors are usable, but the left hand one is cracked and stuck in an awkward position, while the right hand one moved occasionally. The 12v charger on the dash is worn so our sat nav connection kept coming loose. There is no TV set. That said, the water worked well, and nearly all the interior lights worked, and the beds were acceptable. There was a missing curtain on one of the rear doors, but we used a towel, so that was OK. A significant issue was the noise of the engine, which meant that we mostly couldn't hear the music from the radio (only one speaker working) and had to raise our voices to hear each other. Essentially, the campervan worked and did what an old (nearly 30 years) campervan does. It got us around Ireland, and provided a home for five days. It wasn't perfect, but it had charm, and it brought out the best in us, and ultimately we had a memorable and enjoyable holiday. Each to their own what they do. But if you go into hiring from Retro Camper Hire with a positive attitude, prepared for minor issues which you resolve yourself, knowing there'll be back up from the company for major issues, and are not expecting everything to work smoothly, let alone being luxury, then you're likely to have a grand time. We did.
Had potential to be great!
Disappointing!
Very clean & upkeep on maintenance was good, wasn’t worried.
good location and helpful staff , price was good on booking .com
Campers are very old and very basic , but I suppose you get what you pay for , I’m a 1st time camper so expected more , if I was to do agin I would definitely get a newer camper
The bed was very comfortable
We couldn’t get the water or heating to work we managed fine as they had facilities on our campsite
Easy to find the location, the van is retro and cool, our first time in a camper van 🚐 and really enjoyed the freedom to travel around and not have to book hotels or rent a car as we had it all with the van !
Having to bring it back 😂 would of loved another week 👍
The company was very attentive and tried to answer our questions as soon as possible. Everything was easy and gave us recommendations for our trip.
Great space for sleeping, eating, moving around and storage space. Few charging ports, lights. Looks of the vehicle was amazing, drawn many campers attention.
Things could be improved: Doesn't seem to work e.g. TV not showing, fridge not cooling, we ended up not using it. No fuel cap lid. Missing kitchen basic e.g. cutting knife, can opener, cups enough for the group Missing guide on grey and black water disposal, therefore had tried communicating with the provider but no success in solving the problem due to unable to get the problem understood (had tried a few times communicating and searched up the internet for info too) We ended up not using the toilet and kitchen sink. It's our fault for being an inexperienced camper but would be a nicer experience if we could use the facilities without worrying.
Friendly and helpful staff, comfy beds and the fact that it was cheap
We knew we were taking a risk hiring a retro camper, but with amazing reviews a year ago, I thought, "How bad could it be?" So, I booked the Warrior camper, adamant that it was the one for us. We needed a toilet, and the shower was a bonus. When we arrived, the Warrior wasn’t as shiny as the photos. But fine, whatever, we’re adventurers! Then, we were told it was leaking. Great start. After the "fix," we noticed the leak was still there, merrily dripping away. We were offered another camper last minute. My excitement levels were now somewhere between "meh" and "please, no." Enter the Avondale camper: not exactly a palace on wheels, but it would do. I have a thing about roof boxes, so I asked for it to be removed, and the staff kindly did it. They were friendly and fantastic throughout. The radio was dead, so one guy gave us his own plug to charge our phones for the weekend. He also offered great advice on how best to install the baby car seats. Note: these campers are so retro, kids can’t rear-face, and seats are strapped in with lap belts like it’s 1975. We hit the road and drove about 1.5 hours, a journey that felt like piloting a space shuttle made of cardboard. The camper felt like it was powered by a hamster wheel, and I was convinced it would explode if I hit a certain speed. Hills were an anxiety-inducing experience. Compared to newer campers, this was like driving a glorified lawnmower. Noisy, shaky, and holding the road like it was on ice. The beds, however, were surprisingly comfy. We brought our own bedding, so no issues there. Didn’t test the fridge or cooker—survival tip: bring sandwiches. The instruction video was laughably basic, missing crucial details like how to use the cooker and the mysterious battery. The toilet didn’t flush, a fun fact I think they knew but didn’t share. Not something you want to face with a potty training toddler.
False advertising. The campervan would have been fine if advertised properly. The company frequently alocate you different campervans than the details or photos suggest. Be warned.
The camper van was good for independent travel.
I booked a van with Retro Camper Hire Dublin through Booking.com for three nights for four adults. This is Retro Camper Hire's description from Booking.com:- 'We provide top quality vehicles at great prices for our customers to travel freely throughout Ireland both north and south . We’re all about the perfect driving adventure for you, so we guarantee you a modern, clean and well maintained campervan, perfect for exploring the open road.' What we were given was a faulty 30 year old rusty van that barely fit 4 people (there was not enough room in the roof length wise to sleep, I am 5'1" and my daughter is 5'2"). The two wing mirrors were broken, 2 windows were glued shut and a further 2 windows we were told not to use, the sliding door stopped working so we could only open it from the outside, the passenger window dropped into the door so became unusable, there was a gap between the two back doors which let in rain, the petrol cap was not secured so could just be popped off, the van was missing a considerable amount of items that they were listed to have plus all the rust around the whole of the van. Half the cutlery was plastic and we actually bought some spoons as there weren't any. We informed them of the door and window and were just told their maintenance team would be informed. We were sent off being told an instruction video would be sent, this had the bare minimum instructions. If you use this company be sure to check everything is there and working, do not be fobbed off. I really believe the van we hired was not safe or road worthy. He will probably respond that this review is false and misleading.
1st time campers, so it was still a laugh once we got over the condition of how it was handed over.
Wasn't handed over clean- dirty & gross. Radio didn't work. Cupboards kept popping open.
Great host, the van was perfect and had cooking facilities, stove, and little touches. Would book again
N/A
Brilliant wee van, wee did a 1000km+ trip around Ireland with no issues at all! Got to see the beautiful country that it is, and met some great people along the way. Would highly recommend booking this if you want to see the true Ireland and not be stuck to one city and sucked completely into tourist traps!
I recently rented a camper van from Retro camper Hire, and the whole experience was seamless. Booking and pick-up were straightforward. The van was clean, drives very well and all in all a great trip and experience.
The weather
It was a vintage/retro Campervan perfect if you like to live a new experience.
The campervan doesn't have big potential for traveling long distances just for trips around the city.
We rented a van for a week over Easter. The heating was defective. I was traveling with two children. At three degrees Celsius at night, you couldn't sleep in it. We had to rent an AirBnB and had double accommodation costs as a result. The company neither solved the heating problem, nor did he refund the costs of the van. The blower worked, but only with cold air. The day after I reported the problem. The employee's instructions were wrong. I contacted the company several times a day to solve the problem. I was asked to charge the battery by driving around and charge via plug in, even though the blower worked. I was asked to call again later, but then the office was no longer occupied. I got the offer to come back to Dublin and change the van. Suddenly there was no other van left. I was asked to send an email to the boss. I was referred to a few minutes of introductory video. The then self-researched instructions on the Internet showed an error of the heating "Error 10". I wrote this again to the firm. Through the error message and a visit to the underbody, it became clear that the line of the diesel heater dripped and lost diesel. Therefore, the heating could not heat. After telling the company was no longer available because it was Easter. After colds of my children and me, I rented accommodation and brought the van back right after Easter for the first opportunity. The company suggested simply put the van in the yard. I asked for a personal handover and talking about a refund. Beeing there I was informed that the van would be taken back, but the person who could decide on a refund was not present. I should write my request from Germany by email. (Again???). In the subsequent email traffic, it was said that everything was fine after a check of the van. Despite the fact that the van could not be used for the overnight stay, there was no refund. The company kept the full rental price. I absolutely advise against renting a van here.
Very happy with Scooby. The great benefit was moving around. Travelled down to wexford and up the coast back to dublin
Would have gone for a bigger model if I was back again
We had a great time in this campervan First time doing it and honestly couldn’t fault the van at all . Lad in charge was an absolute gentleman and so helpful and obliging . Couldn’t fault anything we will defo rent again during the summer .
Nothing
Great facilities in the van and thorough instructions on how to use it and set up the bed. We stayed in ‘Tammy’ and it was great. Drove really nice once we got her going and was easy to park despite the size. I’d say the bed area itself was a tiny bit uncomfy but that’s to be excepted in a van, and was easy to set up and fold away. Darren was super helpful and there for us via WhatsApp if we needed anything. Would definitely stay again!
The Retro look and feel of the van. Perfect location for the M50 motorway. Can head any dirextion from the pick up location.
Nothing everything was fine. Just the van was a left hand drive, but that was my mistake I did not notice when I booked the van all the other vans they have are right hand drive.
The pick-up location was easy to get to from Dublin via taxi or bus. It was closely located to a food shop to stock up for the journey. Pick up and drop-off process was really easy and fuss-free. We were able to travel around Ireland and see some amazing places, which you wouldn't have been able to access without a campervan. There were lots of great places to stay. We were immediately refunded our security deposit upon return of the van. The cupboards were well stocked with appropriate cutlery, plates, pans, stove, paper towel, washing up liquid and sponges. We were able to borrow pillows and sleeping bags - although you may need to pay extra for this. I would recommend bringing your own if possible. The price of the van rental was reasonable.
It is worth doing a thorough check of your van on pick up to ensure you have all the necessary cushions for the bed. These vans are old and the price reflects the quality. Do not rent these vans if you are expecting a luxury campervan experience. They are basic and lack some homeliness/comfort - what they lack in glamour they make up for in ability to show you Ireland.
We took the van from Dublin round the ring of Kerry, then through Cork. Having a comfy bed and kitchen on board made the journey incredibly convenient and enjoyable for us as we're first-time campervan travellers. Highly recommend!
Renting the camper was easy through booking.com. The pickup was fairly quick and easy, and we got some clear instructions on how to use various features within the campervan. Drop-off was quick, no fuss. Great experience will hire again soon.
We didn't rent it for longer
We booked a camper from Retro Camper Hire for a trip to Cork, and it was fantastic! The camper had everything we needed, it was comfortable and good on fuel. Darren was helpful and made the process quick and easy. Highly recommend them!
Everything was fine cant complain
We had a lovely stay with Retro Camp Hire. It was our maiden camping trip with a camper van and we were underprepared, however we were provided with sleeping bags and heater, also extension cable. Learnt so much during our short stay, would definitely do this again next time!
The van door not tightly closed and unavoidable hiccup happened when the skylight flew off
Good on fuel and reliable van, had everything we needed for a few days on the road.
Couple of maintenance issues but can be easily resolved.
I liked the flexibility of the van. It was also very spacious.
Very helpful and kind service, the owner is an amazing person, all information were provided for the trip and also all the needed stuff, we suggest it to everyone that would like to go around Ireland with a confortable vehicle.
Nothing to report
Ireland and the engine did not break down.
Everything else. 90 percent of the so-called amenities, were not there or did not function.
awesome to have lodging and vehicle all in one
it’s really only comfortable for two people to sleep in. didn’t use cooktop because the fumes from the propane were too strong inside
Very well managed and professional
The van was a classic old school diesel. Old but reliable.
The vans are not really properly maintained, so many thing are in a bad shape.
Nothing
Not what I booked , 800 euro for use at festival, no toilet, 2 broken beds that were only suitable for children. Back door didn't fully open , Old/ unkempt camper van .. When looked for assistance regarding above told its what you paid for ,, Photos misleading..
Great experience. The camper was clean and nice. Of course it is a retro campervan so, yes, it is used. However, that was exactly why we booked such an experience. Picking up the campervan and giving it back was super easy. The Retro Camper was always available and super friendly. Questions were always replied to professionally. We are super happy and would definitely book again.
The service was great and friendly. We enjoyed the van a lot and had everything we required. Would definitely book it again. Worth a booking
Price was good. The staff was excellent. If you are unfamiliar with driving on left side of the road, the location is great for doing a couple of practice laps up and down the road.
There was small issues/broken things in the car (nothing to do with driving, but the living area). As a car it worked fine with no issues. The one we had called Tammy would fit maximum of two people in my opinion (to sleep in). The cars are, as advertised, indeed retro so my tip would be to make sure everything works and that you have all the pieces for beds before you leave the site.
Value for money. Service personal. Perfekt return og the camper. The camper was not new, but walue for money
Being on the road visiting many places.
Advertised has a cooker, it didn't, only a space for one. No TV and linen was missing from the order. Leisure battery wasn't being charged when hooked up so this ran out quickly. Roof loose at front so was noisy on the road. Engine power was poor on inclines. No valid road tax present, though they said it was taxed. It could get you in trouble with the garda.
The Campervan experience was fantastic!
I didn’t like having to give it back!
Nothing
They sent us in a death trap. The horn doesn’t work couldn’t tell a Lorry that we were there which could of been a serious accident. Fumes fill up in the front had to leave the windows down at all times. The fire extinguisher is well out of date and didn’t even have anything in it. Then company was unwilling to help in any form. We will be pursuing a refund but not with them as try to blame us for bad health and safety. As well as that they gave us false advertisement by saying and showing that they provided a shower which they didn’t as well as lines, towels, cleaning equipment etc. It doesn’t sleep 4 adults and barely 2 at that. They claim it’s retro for a shoddy unlivable van. We actually never used the van for sleep as thankfully we had friends with spare accommodation. The beds were broken and after giving us some linens they were incomplete and some were soiled. They wanted us to leave the van in a clean condition but yet was not given to us as that and had food left over from previous users in the fridge. It’s a absolute scam please don’t use it if you value your safety
Helpfull staff and could not have done my trip without the service. Rented the CamperVan "Bertha" for a total of 10 days.
It didn't breakdown on us.
I would rate this a 2, because it got us around for the 8 days without breaking down. They accepted my reservation for a Sunday pickup, they aren't open, had to wait for someone to arrive after calling, then the exact camper I reserved by name "Shelby" (full bathroom, TV,stove)wasn't available until the next day, they tried giving me one with no TV or bathroom (offered to throw in a camp toilet 😔). The TV wouldn't even turn on, I couldn't get the gas stove to light (have to use matches) no matter what I tried (paid 60 euros for the butane tank that was never able to use). The curtains were dirty and missing some connectors that hold them in the track, had safety pins to use to hold them closed because of it. It's a very rough ride, could use a shock upgrade or something, you feel every little bump. I wasn't given any adjustment on the price for the inconveniences (I communicated with the owner on the issues the 1st couple days with no resolve so I gave up and made the best of it, I had no choice, as it's non refundable). There is another RV rental place with similar prices for more modern vehicles outside of Dublin, I would recommend using them, the convenience of this place being in Dublin isn't worth it.
Incredible experience traveling across the country with the camper van. Old school style.
The Van is exactly as advertised a retro camper. myself and my brother went to visit some friends and comparing this to the prices of hotels, air bnbs and so on plus the fact you’d need to also rent a car if travelling anywhere outside of Dublin to have true freedom. if you like to camp I would say that you would love this little van, they have many can options also so make sure you pick the right one for your needs.
basically it’s pretty much the same vibes as camping but just more protection from the elements. if you hate camping I don’t think this is the option for you.
The freedom to travel, beautiful friendly people and the country
1, Rear tyre thought was soft on collection, was assured it was correct pressure and it had been checked, tyre blew out on the Sunday had to be recovered and lost days holiday! most tyre companies are closed on Sunday but AA man thought he knew of a company that could help. whilst at the garage back in Dublin found that there was a wheel nut/ stud missing on another wheel and odd size tyres. 2, rear door and skylight blinds missing, had to pin curtains to completely close 3, expensive charge for gas so we never purchased, no electric standby lead supplied so couldn’t use an alternative 4, even if there was a heat source we couldn’t cook as there were no utensils and maybe a pan but there was cutlery. 5, couldn’t use rear doors very easily as there was no access step 6, there was a tv which I kept hitting my head on in the access route from the front of the van to the rear, you need your own data / signal to operate 7, stopped a couple of times by other motorists enroute and informed the van was smoking badly, unfortunately we couldn’t do anything about it, occasionally we would get exhaust fumes ingress in the cab 8, fitted sheet was too small for our bed
Renting the WARRIOR van was an exciting experience! I plan on trying to get it the next time I’m in the area.
Parking was a little rough, because the steering would be difficult when switching from Reverse to Forward or vice versa. The main thing that was an issue was staying warm overnight in the spring. Even when connected to electricity we couldn’t figure out how to operate the heater. Also the fridge needed to be secured shut while driving, otherwise taking corners will make the door fly open.
Good guys renting it, and willing to help you with anything. The van was clean and comfortable to sleep
Scooby isn’t easy to drive and needed water twice a day to avoid overheating
Scooby (Van not a person) was amazing, some stuff a slightly worn or needed a jiggle to make it work but thats all part of the retro vibe, everything was kept in good nick and workable. The retro feel was awesome and although old the vehicle ran like a well oiled machine. If you are planning on hiring from these guys please make sure you understand you are booking older vehicles as its literally in the name retro.
No issues with the company. Only advice is look into what campsites are open/busy when you travel. We were happy to freedom camp but if we wanted power then no camp sites in certain areas were open and in busy times some camp sites are booked out well in advance.
It was so easy to pick up and go!
The camper van was a little aged but that didn’t stop us from taking it everywhere!
Great opportunity for alternative stay in Ireland. We rented Bandit and enjoyed it well. Old style driving with 30+ years car made me remember my first, but everything worked without any problem. Friendly staff with their own service garage. You can get there by Luas tram from central Dublin (red line to Kylemore stop and then approx. 1km walk). Local roads in Ireland are narrow and it's not always easy to find parking, so we planned spots ahead and it paid off.
The Bandit has a 2L petrol engine, so you have to take into account the corresponding consumption.
1/3 the price of other campers. these are older campers but clean and comfortable
They are not brand new - but very comfortable and cute to look at.
We enjoyed the old camper very much. It is a retro car, so don’t be surprised that it is an old fashion car, but very well maintained. The technical problems during the check in were quickly solved and fixed. Very friendly owner, he gave us everything we needed for our trip. We had no problem during the check-in and check out. Be careful by planning your trip; the streets and roads are narrow, the average speed is very low. You can use the highway, the highway feels already included in the price. The quality of roads are very good. It is allowed to stay overnight on the way.
There is a heavy problem to find a place for overnight staying at some areas, mainly outside of parks. It is recommended to Plan your trip in advance.
Retro Camper Van is the BEST way to see Ireland - plentiful car parks, kind people, come and go as you please. The staff was communicative, and accommodating. Easy to find, pickup and dropoff was a breeze. Plus, how cool is it to roll around the coast in a vintage van? Can't wait to come back!
I'm tall so the beds were a tad short for my liking. My wife was fine though. Other than that no issues whatsoever! No mechanical issues. One of the cabinets kept opening when going over bumps but this did not affect performance of the vehicle at all.
Friendly service, available at the times described for pick-up/drop-off. Deposit returned quickly. Renting a camper allowed us to travel around Ireland and see a lot more on a budget.
Specifically Van #1 Scooby: The driver’s seat is unable to adjust as the kitchen cabinet is fixed in place behind it - if you’re tall you will not have a comfortable drive. Combine that with the fact that these vans are indeed retro (30+ years old) and require some manual use of the clutch - you have a tricky drive. The ad says that it sleeps 4, if you look at the photos you’d soon see that’s an overstatement. The pop-up tent was old, worn & torn so putting someone (a child/children due to the size) up on that platform would make me feel terrible! It would be cold and damp. We didn’t use the fridge as we were afraid of running the van battery flat and being stuck somewhere at our own expense. So to use that/other electrics/heating you need to be at a campsite. We chose to free camp and go without these items. No TV in the van (not an issue for us, just not as described). The descriptions just seem to be a bit ambitious for what is actually provided - so inspect the photos and be a bit pragmatic.
The camper was exactly what we wanted - a way to explore freely. It was warm and comfortable. Driving it took some getting used to but was good. Bed set up also took some getting used to! Overall we had a great experience.
It would have been nice to get 2 duvets.
My Mum and I were renting one camper because of the Garth Concert. Compared to available Hotel rooms the camper was really affordable so we gave it a shot. First impression was mixed, we didnt know what we had to expect. When the owner arrived, I was glad and happy. He is competent and could anwer all questions I had. Very good feeling afterwards. Due to the concert and all the visitors we weren´t able to find a suitable camping site so we just stood nearby the croke park, that was not exactly good for comfort but perfect for what we needed. When renting a van, don´t forget to think of camping sites you want to stay, because there you will have heating, sanataries and electricity. All in all it was a great and different experience and for 2 persons it was perfectly fine. But don´t forget to think that they are vintage cars, no high end luxury.
The renting site is quite far from the airport, so we had to pay taxi to get us there, maybe it is possible for the owner to get a transport for the guests. On the other hand there is supposed to be a train station nearby so you could reach it with public transport.
Darren was a hoot. And made our visit most comfortable!
Getting used to the roads but that was learning curve
We really enjoyed our van rental, and were grateful for the upgrade of the vehicle. It allowed to discover Ireland in the best way possible ! We had a great girl's weekend. :) Thanks.
Hitting our head against the TV ! Haha. Nothing too bad. :)
Friendly staff with quick response to any questions. Van was perfect for our travels around Ireland. Vehicle reliable, would definitely use again if returning to Ireland in the future.
very comfortable and clean great value for money
We loved travelling in a camper van and seeing Ireland at our leisure. The camper van was older, but comfortable and had all basic amenities. Good value for money compared to other offerings in Ireland. The engine was strong and kept going. Inconsiderate renters caused us to get another camper van than what was originally booked, but Darren was always available for questions and to resolve any issue we had.
Avoid unless you're very short, with small children. I hired a Bandit camper. Not as described "with 4 double beds" I'm 5'5" and only one of the beds was long enough for me. Overhead bed even smaller, too short for anyone 5' tall or over. Rear seatbelts too short for normal size adult. Woken at dawn every day because curtain missing from front of van. Loose gas knob posed risk of gas escape. Neither Retro Camper Hire nor Booking. com responded properly to complaints. No refund offered. Generous relatives put us up, saving us from an expensive hotel bill. Van ran as expected for an old Ford Transit
