Sand Dollar House Hiriketiya

I had a lovely stay at sand dollar house. It’s a little outside the hustle and bustle of Hiriketiya which is lovely. It’s only a two minute walk down the hill to the shops and restaurants and yet you have your own little oasis.

The overall aesthetic of the room and terrace is beautiful, extremely peaceful, the breakfast delicious. Gayashan and Roshani are very warm and helpful, it is very special to have a separate space to ourselves and still feel part of their home. The view from the rooftop terrace is unbeatable!

We had a wonderful stay! The accommodation was beautiful and had everything we needed – a cozy bedroom, a clean bathroom, and a lovely outdoor area with a kitchen and seating. The little private jungle right in front of the door made the place feel really special and peaceful. Everything was super clean and well taken care of. The family was incredibly friendly, warm and welcoming, and made us feel at home from the very beginning. The breakfast was also absolutely delicious! We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Sri Lanka. Thank you for having us! 🌿💛

Amazing stay. The cutest spot I stayed at in Hiriketiya. Great value! Awesome location, walking distance to everything you would want.

Only thing to be aware of is that the walks are somewhat thin. Not a problem for me, but if you are expecting compete privacy, something to be aware of.

The family of the homestay were super friendly and helpful. The breakfast was great and the outside part which was private was lovely.

Amazing staff and super nice host family! Can't stress that enough. The garden area is really cute and great to hangout.

The location is okay but I feel you can find better deals for the price. The room is fairly noisy as it's connected to the main building of the host family. Had to fight off a couple of roaches in the bathroom but they provided bug spray to do so.

Delicious breakfast, location is close to restaurants and the sea! Really nice bay to swim and surf. Very welcoming family, who are open for a nice conversation. Room is spacious and clean, same for the bathroom. Nice to have space to sit in the evenings and have a tea, watch monkeys and enjoy the scenery.

Had an amazing stay at Sand Dollar House! The hosts really helpful and friendly. They were so welcoming and even invited us to celebrate Sri Lanka New Year’s with their family, which was such a memorable experience.

De eigenaren waren heel vriendelijk en aardig. Ze waren erg gastvrij en gezellig om mee te praten. De buitenplaats vonden we heel fijn met de hangmat en het ligplekje. Er is ook een koelkast en thee/koffie. Het ontbijt was prima. De kamer was leuk gedecoreerd. Alles zag er netjes uit.

Niks noemenswaardig om hier te schrijven, het is echt een prima verblijf, zeker voor de prijs.

Would highly recommend this lovely home stay property, which was very comfortable and in a great, quiet location. We particularly loved having the outdoor space. Our host Roshani was very welcoming and always available to give us advice.

Het eigen binnentuintje was ontzettend knus. Fijn om je even in terug te trekken. De eigenaresse was heel aardig, behulpzaam en kon goed Engels. Ze heeft ons veel verteld over het schoolsysteem in Sri Lanka. De kindjes zijn heel lief en willen graag spelen als jij dat ook wil.

Eine sehr schöne Unterkunft mit eigenem Garten und einer kleinen Küche, in der man gut entspannen kann und in deren Umgebung man auch Affen sehen kann. Die Gastgeberin Roshani ist sehr nett und hilfsbereit. Sie hat sich regelmäßig erkundigt, ob bei uns alles in Ordnung ist. Außerdem konnten wir unkompliziert einen Roller ausleihen. Das Zimmer ist sauber und ausreichend groß. Die Klimaanlage funktioniert einwandfrei. Auch das Frühstück war sehr lecker und liebevoll zubereitet. Insgesamt hatten wir einen sehr angenehmen Aufenthalt und würden die Unterkunft definitiv weiterempfehlen.

De locatie is prima. Wel een kleine klim maar dit is prima te doen. Voor de rest ligt het vrij centraal en rustig. Je hebt echt je eigen huisje met terras. Het terras was heerlijk. Kamers zijn vrij ruim.

Super lieve host. Ze had voor ons 1 jarig jubileum een prachtig diner georganiseerd met kaarslicht.

Omdat alles eco-friendly is, is de waterdruk heel laag. Dit maakt het douchen minder prettig. Verder loopt de wasbak niet goed weg. En je moet best een helling op om het verblijf te bereiken!

Super schöne und saubere Unterkunft mit einer richtig gemütlichen Terrasse zum Verweilen. Die Gastfamilie ist total herzlich, das Frühstück immer abwechslungsreich und lecker. Die Lage ist ruhig, jedoch trotzdem noch zentral.

Ein super süßer Aussenbereich, in dem man sich sehr gerne aufhält. Die Gastgeberin und ihre Hilfskraft sind sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit - das Frühstück war auch lecker.

Leider ist das Bett ungemütlich und sehr laut, die Klimaanlage sowie die Holzrahmen von Tür und Fenster von Schimmel befallen. Die Luft war sehr feucht und muffig, uns ist es schwer gefallen zu schlafen.

Dit verblijf wordt vooral zo fijn gemaakt door de onwijs lieve familie. Het is een verblijf aansluitend aan de woning van de familie. Het is wat meer basic, maar dat vinden wij juist er leuk. Het ontbijt werd met veel liefde verzorgd.

We really enjoyed our stay at Sand Dollar House! You have your own outdoor area which is really nice to chill in. Location is excellent and the owners are very friendly and attentive!

We loved the homely feel, the lovely private courtyard and outdoor kitchen complete with sun bed and hammock. This property has a focus on sustainability which was great. Close to town and Hiri beach it is easily accessible by foot, tuk tuk or bike. The family were such wonderful hosts and we loved getting to know Roshani, the kids and the sweet doggies too. We felt so welcomed and like we had a little home away from home.

We really loved it here, the only things to be mindful of are that the road to the property is a bit of a hill so a little fitness is required and this room is a home stay connected to the main house, so you do feel like you are guests staying with family and can hear the family chatting and the kids playing which we really liked, but if you are someone who prefers to be a bit more secluded they also have a beautiful apartment on the same property that is detached from the main house and has beautiful views.

We had a fantastic stay! The room was comfortable, the breakfast was nice, and the location was perfect – just a 10-minute walk from the beach. Our host was absolutely wonderful – so kind, helpful, and always there for anything we needed. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a cozy place with great vibes and a perfect location!

Nice little annex away from the busy area of Hiriketiya. The family was very welcoming and offered us a welcome drink which was a nice touch. The facilities are good. The shower could do with some more pressure. Bella the dog is so cute. The breakfast was great!

The outdoor space is great, nice and shaded. You can see monkeys out the back and really friendly cats come usually make an appearance if you’re sitting out. Super relaxing after a day of surfing. The breakfast is also tasty and healthy. Room has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Highly recommend

We had the best time in Sand dollar house. Roshani and her family were the most welcoming and warm-hearted people and we felt very welcome. The location is good as well, just a short walk to the beach and nice restaurants. We would love to visit again!

Such a wonderful place to stay which even came with its own massive, private outdoor area. The family who owned it were so attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. The property is in a perfect location and is walkable to beaches, lots of cafes, restaurants and bars. Will definitely be staying here again!

This is a beautifully presented property with everything that you might need. We agree with other reviewers who describe this as a ‘home away from home’. The setting is perfect, close enough to walk into town and far enough away to feel serene with monkeys, peacocks and other wildlife outside. Roshani and her family are just lovely people who will help with anything, not to mention cooking a lovely breakfast.

Lovely homestay run by a very humble family in Hiriketiya. They made sure that we feel welcomed, comfortable and helped us fully for each and everything from the start of the trip. I would highly recommend this beautiful home stay. It’s a brilliant mix of a homestay and your own private apartment with an outside covered garden and kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. The breakfast was absolutely delicious in the mornings. The host was so friendly and accommodating and made me feel so special on my birthday. They even Shared their children’s toys with my two year-old which he absolutely loved and enjoyed playing with their children. we would definitely stay again when we return to Sri Lanka in a few years time.

The owner and family were very welcoming and lovely people. Had great chats with the owner. The garden is beautiful with lovely areas to chill out and an outside shower. Breakfast was great and timings worked around us.

There isn’t anything to not like, there are some ants however this cannot be helped with the location.

It was a privilege to stay at Sand Dollar House and have the opportunity to meet Roshani and her children. The house is in a peaceful location away from the hustle and bustle but only a short walk to restaurants and the beach. We really enjoyed walking over to Dalawalla beach, which is also nearby. Roshani was very caring and made sure we had everything we needed. The bed is big and comfortable. I hope to see this family again sometime in the future 🙏

The Sand Dollar House is an amazing place to stay if you love an eco-friendly environment and a nature lover. We truly enjoyed our time, and we're impressed by the kind and lovely family who even organized us a perfect Yala National Park tour. The outside living room style area was the best. At night, the fireflies were incredible.

The host was amazing and had a lovely family. They helped you with everything you needed. Great to just talk to and make you feel very at ease.

Fantastic place to stay and incredibly friendly and welcoming. The walk to Hiriketiya is a short 6 minutes and Roshani went out of her way to help me find onward transport.

Wow!! Everything is so well done amazing place! House is beautiful with a nice garden where you see lots of fireflies ❤️! Very magical to relax in the hammock after a nice day at the beach! Bella the dog is the cutest ! Breakfast was yummy and all this with the monkeys in the back playing! What a little slice of heaven! But the best part are Rashani and her daughter Methuki. My daughter really felt sad (we aswell) to leave this ‘home away from home’ 11 out of 10!!!

Lovely host & family! We felt incredibly welcome 🤗 We had amazing breakfast in the private outdoor kitchen/patio that is part of the room. Every morning our host prepared different Sri Lankan breakfast dishes and they were all very delicious. There are beautiful flowers and trees everywhere. New outdoor shower which is perfect after the beach. Bathroom was even equipped with a hairdryer.

We loved our stay at Sand Dollar house! The outdoor kitchen/living area, which includes a new outdoor shower, an outdoor bed and a handmade hammock was really cool place to chill! Roshani and the family are so lovely and really helpful. They also have 2 lovely dogs who love some cuddles! We will definetly back when we next come to Hiriketiya

Lovely family run homestay with nice outdoor area and comfortable room. A short walk away from restaurants and about a 10 min walk to the beach. It was nice to see how environmentally conscious the family were :)

The property is a little piece of heaven. The room is connected to your very own private garden with an outdoor shower and bed, with great shadow so you can experience a fresh place in the heat of Hiriketiya. The hosts are lovely and speak great English. The breakfast is local. We felt very welcome 🙏 and wish them nothing but the best. 10 minutes walk from the beach (maximum)

Breakfast was really yum - plenty of food, and options slightly changed each day. Really yum.

Main feedback is; sweeping the little patio area daily would be welcomed (which I think they did, but also I noticed it got kinda dusty so not sure). Making sure there were spoons so I could make morning coffees. Perhaps some access to milk would have been a bonus, but not super fussed. The day bed also looked really inviting, but when it rained it all became wet so I couldn't really use it; so, perhaps better management of that area.

We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful accommodation. The room was charming and very comfortable. The highlight was definitely the delicious, traditional breakfast – fresh, local ingredients with a vegan option. Roshani was incredibly attentive and made sure everything was perfect for our stay. Sand Dollar House is so charming. We had the warmest welcome and hospitality from Roshani and her family, all going out of there way to make us feel at home whilst also getting a very local experience. The accommodation itself is magical, we loved the courtyard/kitchen/living space surrounded by nature and full of greenery. It’s a great place to relax or eat. At night we saw fireflies and in the day we saw monkeys. Roshani made us very filling Sri Lankan breakfasts which made us very happy. It is also great to see how sustainable the family have made the place with a water filter refill and an environmentally friendly shower. The bathroom is really nice and the bed is large and comfortable. Everything we needed. We Would highly recommend Sand Dollar House to anyone.

Sand Dollar House is our favourite accommodation we’ve had so far during our trip around Sri Lanka. The room is spacious and clean and has so many nice homely touches. The bathroom has a hot shower and the bed is super comfy and massive!! The private outdoor area is also so lovely and nice to hang out in especially during wet weather and the breakfast each morning was delicious. The host family are so kind and committed to sustainability which we loved, the water filter was such a great addition! Thank you so much for hosting us and looking after us so attentively, we will be back!!!

Absolutely wonderful and accomodating family running this place, who are doing their best to run it in an environmentally friendly way. Great location, very close to the beach. Good AC and WiFi. Also one of the best traditional breakfasts we had in Sri Lanka.

The Sand Dollar house was the perfect place to enjoy Hiri and Dikwella beaches. The outdoor kitchen/living area is ideal for lazy afternoons in the hammock. The hosts were very communicative and accommodating and also very friendly :) The bedroom is clean and exactly as described - We’d come back and stay again!

This is such a lovely Homestay. Gayashan and Roshani are really kind and attentive hosts. We loved the garden so much. It is full of greenery and facilities that made our stay relaxing and cosy. Perfect place to relax and have some quite time. Kinda romantic and cute. We really loved the garden and were hanging out there a lot. the breakfast was also really good.

Lovely peaceful spot, feels like you are staying in the jungle with an outdoor shower and a garden full of plants. Only 10 min walk to the beach. Roshani was a lovely host, who was very attentive and made us feel very welcome in her eco homestay. We stayed an extra 2 nights as we loved it so much! Breakfast was great, a mix of Sri Lankan and western, changing every day. There was a water filter free to use to minimise plastic bottles, as well as lots of nice little details which really made you feel at home like: herbal tea, yoga mat, scented candles and a hair dryer.

Clean and very comfortable space! You have your own little patio and outside kitchen. The owners are super lovely and really want to make sure you're having a good stay. Highly recommended!

We had a very lovely but short stay at Sand Dollar House! The room is located in a small courtyard with many plants and trees, at a few minute's walk from the main beach in Hiriketiya. The courtyard is very peaceful, with nice places to sit down and relax, as well as a small outdoor cooking area. The room itself is very clean and cozy, and has a very nice on-suite bathroom that has recently been renovated. There is everything you need, including a mosquito net and air conditioning. Gayashan was very welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed for our stay :) He was able to book a scooter for us to go explore the beaches and sights around Hiriketiya, and gave lots of tips on the best spots to go and visit. He is a very passionate marine biologist so recommended the best beaches to go to! He also gave us some great tips on where to eat as we were there during the low season so some places were closed. Both ones that we tried were great, with great service and delicious food. He even was able to arrange us a last minute taxi the morning we were leaving as we had a change in our travel plans. We would definitely recommend Sand Dollar House, based on the location, the value for money, the kindness of the hosts and to have a really nice local experience :)

Sand Dollar House was one of the best homestays in my whole month of traveling around Sri Lanka! Gayashan and his family were so welcoming and accommodating. You have the whole space to yourself; room, bathroom, outdoor kitchen, and lounge area complete with a hammock. It is the perfect place to relax and hang out! 10/10 recommend!

I don't know what we can say that hasn't already been said - this place exceeds all expectations. If you're looking for a place to call home during your time in Hiriketiya and this place is appearing available, book NOW. Gayashan and his family take pride in their homestay and are dedicated to making sure you have a pleasant stay. The courtyard/outdoor kitchen area that appears in the photos are private for your use only. There are lights outdoors, and we really enjoyed having a tea outside in the evening with our board games. The air conditioning and hot shower work perfectly. The bed is comfortable. The breakfasts are delicious (even catered to a vegan diet). The beach and delicious local restaurants 5 min walk away. If you want to explore, the hosts will organise a reasonably priced scooter rental. Best part is they have two beautiful well-trained dogs that love to be pat. By far the coziest place we’ve stayed in Sri Lanka. The room room has its own private, outdoor area with a shower (besides the one in the bathroom), a kitchen counter, a fridge and several places to relax and hang out. Plus there are body boards available for free. The family running the place are so sweet and helpful and made us feel at home while valuing our privacy. Stay here!

I wish I could give more than 10 stars! This guesthouse is the most amazing place we have stayed at in our 10 weeks trip throughout Sri Lanka. You will get a complete house with a very modern bathroom, a room, an amazing little outdoor kitchen with a huge fridge, a kettle and even a french press for coffee. There is also a super cozy chill out area in the garden. The breakfast was amazing! On top of that, you are super close to two of the best rice&curry restaurants in Hiri and the beach is also just a short walk. The house is quiet and you are away from the beach parties that happen on weekends. We work online and live nomadically. We would totally stay for a month. The garden is perfect for some work time. Big table with enough space for two laptops. We absolutely loved our stay here and will 100% come back.

It is very well designed and we had our own space and privacy. It was a very unique space and we enjoyed the outdoor kitchen and sitting area. The host and family were very warm and welcoming and made us feel comfortable right away. They were very attentive to our needs and made the stay very enjoyable. We enjoyed our stay very much and look forward to coming again when we return to Sri Lanka.

So glad we chose to stay here during our time in Hiriketiya! The family are welcoming and polite and offered a great intro to the house and it’s amenities. Breakfast was served promptly each morning with a variety of choices and the house offered a fridge and kettle for anything additional we wanted to keep (I.e fresh fruit or hot drinks). Gayashan and his family were super helpful with any requests or questions and their English is fantastic! We couldn’t recommend Sand Dollar House more!

Loved my stay here! You actually have your own small house with garden, hammock etc. Hot shower, good wifi, good breakfast which was a bit different everyday with local things to try. And the family (and dogs) are super friendly. Small walk to the beach, but lovely natural surroundings and passing by some shops and restaurants.

Me and my boyfriend's stay in Sand Dollar House was TRULY EXCEPTIONAL! I cannot think of any negative feedbacks as Gayshan's family are very much welcoming and they pay attention in every small details and attends to our needs on a daily basis. I love the homestay's interior and coziness at the same time and will definitely make you feel that you wanted to stay longer. Breakfast was splendid! I highly recommend this homestay most especially to couples who wants to have a perfect getaway at a reasonable price. It is so worth it! The host's family always make sure that all their guest will have a wonderful and memorable experience during their stay as they always go beyond the extra mile. They made my birthday week such a lovely one by surprising me with a small celebration with a cake and balloons. :) In regards to location, it is also close by to the nice beaches whether you like to surf or just to swim and chill under the sun. There are also some amazing restaurants around the area to try local food and massage place to relax after surfing. :) The Dickwella town is also very near if you wish to buy fresh fruits or some grocery shopping. I'm really happy that I decided to go to Hirekitiya to spend my birthday surf week there and I'm very glad that I chose Sand Dollar House to stay in. Also I won't forget their adorable dogs, Bella and Lily who made our stay a very fun one. :) Me and my boyfriend are looking forward of going back to Sand Dollar House on our next vacation as the way they made us feel like a part of their family more than a guest really touches our heart. :)

Sand Dollar House is a beautiful oasis in the most amazing setting. Hiriketiya itself is gorgeous, and Sand Dollar House makes it even better. Gayashan and Roshani are amazing hosts and went out of their way to make us feel welcome, even inviting us to to their family new year celebrations! As for the homestay, it’s beautifully decorated and has absolutely everything you need. I wouldn’t stay anywhere else in Hiriketiya and highly recommend it to others.

We had a wonderful stay at the Sand Dollar Guest House. Gayashan and his lovely family welcomed us like we were part of their family. His wife cooked dinner for us twice and provided a lovely breakfast each morning. We played cards and games with their cute daughter and had wonderful conversations with them all. The accommodation is exactly like the pictures. There is a lovely AC bedroom with an ensuite and a private covered garden with a kitchen benchtop, hammock, dinning table and outdoor shower. There is a private entrance to your accommodation so you can decide on your level of interaction with the family. The property is located a short 5 min walk to the beach. There are loads of restaurants, juice bars, shops within a 2 to 5min walk. The property is located next to jungle so you will see loads of monkeys, birds and interesting lizards. Gayashan is also studying marine biology and can share his knowledge on the local wildlife. Excellent value for money and you will be supporting a wonderful local family so book up!

An extraordinarily beautiful homestay with great attention to detail, perfect facilities and an excellent location: you are away from the tourist hustle and bustle, in the middle of nature and still within a few minutes on the beach. Brilliant! Gayashan and his entire family are a real gem, warm and helpful. Even when I stepped into a sea urchin while surfing, he was immediately there as a marine biologist and was a great help. The room is clean and very well equipped and above all has a wonderful outdoor area to relax, enjoy the tasty breakfast and experience nature. We can only recommend everyone to stop by here. They put a lot of effort into running the place as sustainable as possible and can give good recommendations on responsible safaris and whale watching tours (Gayashan is a marine biologist). We loved the garden as much as the nicely decorated room. We can absolutely recommend the Sand Dollar House!

A hidden gem in Hirikiteya... The apartment has everything you need to have a good time. We went as a couple and didn't miss anything, it even has a hair dryer... You have the space to yourself and can relax, but the host can help you with everything you need really quickly. It's a bit up the hill ( around 7 minutes to the beach) but the location is quiet and green...

Everything was great

Our three-day stay in Gayashan and Roshani's place has become (despite having already visited Sri Lanka several times) our new gold standard of homestays. We felt welcomed and supported by their whole family - including their spontaneously celebrating my birthday. And, at the same time we had all the space and privacy we could have needed: our hosts managed this balancing act with grace and considerateness. Our time there as honorary family members passed really quickly, we very much hope to return.

It was an absolute pleasure and great experience to stay at this place, in the middle of wildlife of Sri Lanka! The hosts are the best you'll find - educated about the country's natural environment, ecology, buddhism, history. They shared this knowledge with us, also guided us during main local events. The place is fully sustainable, you'll also experience there animals like peacocks, monkeys, plenty of birds and butterflies. Breakfasts are homemade sri lankan cousine. Perfect location, only few minutes walk to the beach. We recommend this place to everyone, who are not only looking for a convenient homestay, but also one in the life time experience!
