Gatetrees resort

We stayed at Gate Trees Resort for a week and had such a lovely experience. The staff are incredibly friendly, welcoming and accommodating, and the hospitality was honestly one of the best parts of our stay. The General Manager deserves a special mention. She is so kind, polite and genuinely helpful, and she really made our whole stay feel smooth and comfortable. She recommended genuinely good places for shopping, helped us find a reliable laundry service, and even took my partner on her scooter to a nearby pharmacy after noticing that her hand was red and swollen. That level of care really stood out to us. We would honestly recommend staying here for the hospitality and service alone. The food is on another level too. The aunties and kitchen staff are absolutely adorable, always greeting you with friendly smiles and waves. They serve proper, authentic Jaffna home-style food — the kind you don’t easily find elsewhere. We had dishes like crab curry, mutton curry and puttu, and it genuinely felt like eating a home-cooked meal. The rooms were homely, comfortable and relaxing, and the outdoor gardens were beautifully kept and such a nice place to sit and unwind. Overall, we had a wonderful stay and really appreciate all the kindness, help and care shown to us by the whole team. We will definitely stay here again the next time we visit Sri Lanka. Highly recommended!

Breakfast was fantastic

We arrived at 4 AM in the morning with the night train from Colombo. The property arranged someone to welcome us at this time. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, with a nice terrace. Many options for breakfast, which was delicious and the right amount. Location is great to visit Jaffna. The owner and staff were friendly and arranged things for us. We could use his bike for free and he arranged a day tour for us to discover Jaffna and its surroundings.

Nous savions en réservant mais c’est vraiment dommage de ne pas avoir une piscine, les journées sont très chaudes à Jaffna. Ça nous a manqué.

The staff did everything they could to make help us with everything we needed. We were offered a place where we could do some work, provided us with usefull contacts for scooter rental and laundry and we were able to stay a bit longer in the room so we didnt had to wait too longer for our train. Can highly recommend!

Bij ontvangst werd onze bagage meteen naar de gekoelde kamer gebracht.... en zo was het hele verblijf. Gericht op waar je als gast aan toe bent. Srilankees, Europees, qua hospitality en kwaliteit van materialen, op niks is bezuinigd. Complimenten voor de manager, het peroneel en de eigenaar. Echt een aanrader!

The accommodation is clean. The staff are friendly. The family rooms are spacious. A working TV 👍🏽. The breakfast is very generous.

There were a lot of ants, including in the room. You probably need to use some kind of treatment to deal with them, as it’s probably not easy to get rid of ants completely in Sri Lanka. The bathroom had a very strong musty smell in the mornings. The bathroom ventilation was not working. There was a small window that I tried to leave open every morning, but it kept closing again. After airing the bathroom out, the smell would disappear, but it came back again the next morning. It was quite an unpleasant smell. Unfortunately, after a few days, breakfast becomes a bit repetitive (we are staying for eight nights), as it is almost always the same, even though you can choose between four different menus. In terms of price, this accommodation is quite expensive compared to Colombo. We paid around €98 (US$114) per night. For that price, the cleanliness is good, which is very important to me, but otherwise there is nothing particularly special about the room apart from the TV. Unfortunately, there is also no separate mirror in the room, only one in the bathroom. That is something they could improve.

Nice Gardens value for money and the food

Die Unterkunft hat eine tolle Lage mit einem schönen, ruhigen Garten in einer trubeligen Stadt. Kleine Seitenstraße und trotzdem noch zentral. 10 Gehminuten bis zum Bahnhof. Super freundliche Inhaber, die unterstützen und viele Infos zur Umgebung haben. Hervorragendes und abwechslungsreiches Frühstück. Und das Restaurant ist auch zu empfehlen. Unbedingt die black pepper crab probieren.

Exceptional service, beautiful rooms and compounds. Breakfast every morning was delightful - go for local of course! A different curry, sambol and selection of breads like roti, chapatti, string hoppers to go with it, followed by a delicious fruit salad. We ate every night at the restaurant as we were so impressed with breakfast, and didn't get disappointed! Became addicted to the fluffy pittu side dish... We were very well looked after

The property is lovely, with a beautiful garden and a private balcony attached to the room. The room itself was spacious, with two queen beds and, importantly for me, a proper desk. It also had both a fan and air conditioning, which made the heat much more bearable. The main reason I booked this place was the bathroom, and it didn’t disappoint. It was modern, spotlessly clean, and free of any unpleasant stains or signs of wear. Breakfast was included, with both local and Western options available. The staff were also friendly, helpful, and accommodating throughout my stay.

The hot water seemed to run out after a while, but it wasn’t a major issue and was still perfectly manageable. The location isn’t the most central, but the peaceful surroundings more than make up for it. In any case, getting around the city generally requires a tuk-tuk or Uber rather than walking, so I didn’t find the location inconvenient.

Vi blev taget godt i mod. Manageren var utrolig hjælpsom med at arrangere tur og transport for os. Vi fik en fantastisk guide, som tog os med rundt i området og fortalte om religionen, kulturen og naturen. Maden var virkelig veltilberedt.

I had an amazing stay at this resort. From the moment I arrived, everything exceeded my expectations. Lovely peaceful location. Breakfasts are not to be missed - lots of delicious local choices and Western choices also available. Evening meals were very tasty too. Staff were very helpful and accommodating. We enjoyed sitting out in the evening with drinks and playing games. The restaurant was equally used by locals and and tourists giving a lovely relaxed atmosphere. The main lady was very attentive and spoke good English. She and the rest of the staff seemed to work very hard. Would definitely recommend staying here.

La signora che gestiva sembrava fare 20 cose contemporaneamente e tutte molto bene con professionalità e gentilezza. Posizione ottima a 5 min da tutto. Il ristorante ottimo, abbiamo cenato con granchio al curry e gamberetti al curry buonissimi. Colazione altrettanto buona, ottimo il caffè locale.

This is a beautiful property and the room was spacious and comfortable. The staff were excellent, really kind and happy to help with anything (even packed me fruit to-go for my early train :))! Breakfast was also amazing, some of the best food I have had in Sri Lanka. If you are looking for a nice place to stay in Jaffna, this is it!

Outstanding experience at Gatetrees Resort in Jaffna. Our host was incredibly kind and attentive, always available to help with anything we needed. He prepared an amazing crab curry for us — honestly one of the best dishes we had during our entire trip to northern Sri Lanka, authentic Jaffna style at its finest. The rooms are well-maintained, spacious, and impeccably clean. The entire staff is friendly, welcoming, and always smiling. Great location for visiting central Jaffna, Nallur Kovil, and the Dutch Fort. The room was very comfortable as they very generously upgraded us to a deluxe room. . Good breakfast. Evening meals were exceptional. The staff friendly and helpful and put us onto Siva Kumar a great guide and tuk tuk driver whom we used for our excursions to Pt Pedro and also Delf Island. Our stay could not have been better.

I had such a genuinely wonderful stay at GateTrees Resort, and I honestly left feeling like I was leaving home rather than a hotel. A very special mention to Edman Suganthini — her kindness, warmth, and personalised care made the entire experience unforgettable. She constantly checked in on our well-being and made sure we were comfortable throughout the stay. It never felt transactional; it truly felt like we were being taken care of by family. The rooms are incredibly spacious, clean, and peaceful, and the mattress was honestly one of the most comfortable I’ve slept on in a long time. After long days travelling around Jaffna, coming back to the room felt so relaxing. And the food… absolutely amazing, amazing, amazing. The local dishes prepared by the cook were exceptional and full of authentic flavour. You can really taste the love and care in the cooking. Most importantly — please do not skip the breakfast here. Even after my trip, I’m still craving the exact same dosa, pittu, fresh fruit platter, and coffee. Everything was so fresh, comforting, and incredibly delicious. Thank you again to the entire team at GateTrees Resort for such a heartfelt experience. I will definitely return whenever I’m back in Jaffna.

Das Gatetree Ressort ist ein wunderschöner Ort in Jaffna, im Norden Sri Lankas - sogar noch schöner als auf den Bildern. Der Besitzer und das Personal ist extrem nett, hilfsbereit und zuvorkommend. Das Team hat uns bei allem unterstützt, geholfen die Weiterreise zu organisieren und uns am Ende sogar zum Busbahnhof gefahren. Der Besitzer kommt aus Jaffna, aber lebte einige Jahre in Deutschland und wir haben uns oftmals sehr nett auf deutsch unterhalten. Die Anlage ist sehr schön angelegt, man wacht auf und blickt ins Grüne. Zum Frühstücken kann man American oder typisch lokales Frühstück auswählen. Wir hatten jeden Tag was anderes und es war immer sehr lecker. Man kann auch im privaten Restaurant zu Abend essen und es gibt auf Anfrage frischen Fisch vom Fischmarkt. Die Betten sind sehr bequem, wir haben sehr gut geschlafen. Über die Unterkunft haben wir an einem Tag einen Fahrer organisiert bekommen (Siva von Jassica Tour & Travels), der uns von Morgens bis Abends auf der Nordhalbinsel rumgefahren und viele tolle Orte gezeigt und erklärt hat. Wir waren traurig, wieder abzureisen und können das Hotel aus vollem Herzen empfehlen.

Die Bezahlung musste an der Bar erfolgen, was etwas unpraktisch war.

Super freundliche Hotelmanagerin und alle Mitarbeiter waren sehr hilfsbereit. Wir durften auch sehr früh einchecken, was uns sehr gefreut hat. Auch das Abendessen ist sehr empfehlenswert, das Frühstück sowieso!

The managers is a encyclopaedia of knowledge and always helpful and calm. The staff are attentive and kind. The two chefs are excellent so that all the food is always at least ‘very good’. The crab curry was superb. The garden is an oasis of quiet. The rooms are large, clean and the bed is extremely comfortable. The hotel is within walking distance of a good coffee shop , the laundry service and local sights. There are cars and tuk tuks readily available to book through the hotel or on ‘pick me’. A highly recommended stay.

A pleasant resort with a fantastic team who are always ready to help. The rooms are spacious and clean. The food of the restaurant is delicious. Tip: ask for the mud crab—it’s so tasty! The location in relation to the city’s main highlights is perfect. Everything is reachable within 10 minutes by tuk-tuk.

Lovely lay out. Owner and staff excellent. Got me a thin duvet extra, no trouble and bring drinks to room. Crab curry, prawn curry and prawn biryani all delicious. Have to have the crab curry. Breakfast- have to order night before, omelet, toast, marmalade or choice of 3 Sri Lankan breakfasts. I have potatoe curry and rotti- very good. Plus a banana and small plate of fruit. Nice sitting out area in front of rooms facing gardens. Or use seating area. SLR 600 for Tuk Tuk to train station. Train running at 6:30/40 to Anuradhapura daily. Get to station about 6 and buy ticket. About 700/- each. Good journey.

The staff were exceptional. Really happy to help and always friendly. Our meals - breakfast and evening as well, were exceptional. The open kitchen is a lovely feature; hard working and talented cooks/chefs are very much centre stage!

Rather muddy entrance after unseasonably heavy rain

Although we had the standard room, everything was perfect about the room, spacious, good AC, powerful shower. The staff were efficient, friendly and always keen to help. We ate at the restaurant every night as the food was so nice and great value.

Super nettes Personal, tolles Essen, schöne Zimmer und eine sehr gute Lage, um die Stadt zu erkunden. Vom Besitzer bekamen wir den sehr netten und kompetenten TukTuk-Fahrer Siva vermittelt, der uns einen ganzen Tag rund um die Halbinsel gefahren hat und uns mit seinen Erzählungen in sehr gutem Englisch das Land und seine Historie sehr nahe bringen konnte. Dabei waren auch interessante Besichtigungen von Hindu-Tempeln. Alles sehr zu empfehlen.

Das Hotel scheint Probleme mit Feuchtigkeit zu haben. Es gab Schimmel im Schrank und dadurch hat es im Zimmer gerochen. Im Bad roch es nach Abfluss.

Very nice hotel with comfortable rooms. Close to all major attractions and not very far from train station. The garden is absolutely beautiful and the staff very accommodating. A big plus is the hot water and the room service!

Unfortunately there are a lot of mosquitos outside which makes it almost impossible to enjoy the seating area outdoors. The breakfast could be a little more varied.

The best in this place is their food which is only available for their guest. Room is nice, simple and clean. Everyone was friendly and readily available to assist.

Bel établissement, personnel au top, patron au petit soin pour la clientèle, belle chambre très propre, au calme, donnant sur un jardin entretenu, literie très confortable. Excellent restaurant sur place. Situé dans une rue calme et à quelques minutes en tuk tuk du fort et du bazar. Je recommande vivement.

Beware of mosquito's.

Le personnel est au petit soin. Très accueillant. Ils nous ont aidé pour le scooter, on le réserve à l accueil et il est livré sur place. Le patron nous à conseillé sur les bon spots où se rendre. Les déjeuners étaient copieux, délicieux et très variés. Il y a un grand choix à la carte. Les chambres sont propres, les matelas très confortables même si un peu dur mais au moins dès qu'un des deux bouge l autre ne se réveille pas. L'eau chaude fonctionne très bien et fait du bien après quelques jours à avoir voyagé sans. Ma compagne a eu un problème médical. Le patron sans que nous lui demandions a pris les devant en appelant son ami médecin, il nous a ensuite accompagné à l'hôpital où nous avons été pris en charge directement. Nous lui en sommes reconnaissant. Il est toujours sur place et veille à ce que ses clients se sentent bien dans l'établissement. Merci pour le séjour. Bonne continuation.

What a find! Beautiful hotel in a lovely quiet area, an oasis of calm. The rooms were exceptional, clean and beds comfortable. Hot power rain shower. Grounds were beautiful, spacious balcony overlooking manicured gardens. At night they have pretty lights. The team running the hotel were fabulous and a big shout out to the chef as the food was delicious. We eat there our whole stay as they catered for every need and cooked everything fresh.

The description on booking.com stated the bedroom was separate to the lounge area this wasn’t the case. Although we were happy with the room. Coffee in the room would have been nice.

Nous avons été très agréablement surpris! La terrasse de l'hotel avec ses fauteuils en simili cuir ne nous a pas trop convaincus. Par contre la chambre était vraiment super! Un grand lit très confortable, un coin salon avec sofa et table basse, possibilité de faire thé ou café, télévision, frigo, grande armoire, grande salle de douche avec chauffe eau donc eau chaude! Personnel très gentil et avenant. Un jardin bien arboré. Il n'y avait pas de moustique! Petit déj continental ou sri lankais au choix! À 600m de la gare, proche des commerces et pourtant au calme! Alors il est vrai que parfois il y avait de drôles d'odeurs comme dans plusieurs autres hotels( je pense qu'ils n'ont pas de syphon!) mais en mettant le ventilateur et la clim quelques minutes l'odeur part!

Das Deluxe Zimmer befindet sich im oberen Stock und ist blitzsauber und sehr schön eingerichtet. Das Bad und die Dusche ist gross mit sehr gutem Wasserdruck. Wir haben viel Zeit auf dem Balkon verbracht auf sehr bequemen Stühlen mit Blick in den schönen Garten. Das Essen im Restaurant war sehr lecker und das Personal sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit. Die Lage ist sehr ruhig und doch zentral. Ein TOP Hotel mit super Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis!

Absolut nichts!

I booked online, mainly because the location is closer to a family I was visiting. I found the staff are very friendly. To my surprise, they had a full-fledged commercial kitchen, which I didn't expect at the time of booking. They were willing to make any dish not on the menu. I had only breakfast, coffee, and tea. But the food was excellent.

Mosquitoes in the outdoors are a pain. This is a problem everywhere in Jaffna.
