The garden, the bar and staff. I enjoyed the quietness and Taito City overwall. Everyone was warm and welcoming. Everything was clean. The „only female dormitory“ was really nice. I loved the traditional japanese building.
Returning to this calm guesthouse after a long day of exploring is so relaxing! The atmosphere and the garden is just so wonderful. Everything is clean and works well, and the staff is very kind. The optional breakfast is also amazing. 100% recommend!!
Amazing staff, their hospitality is great, I loved the house and the area - try their recommendations for the neighbourhood, you won't be disappointed :)
Really special place. Shower and kitchen area were clean and spacious. This place stimulates all the five senses! Sad that I could only stay one night.

I really enjoyed the traditional Japanese atmosphere, the garden, the house, the amenities, the friendly staff and the overall quality of everything.
Nothing, everything was great!
I really enjoyed the vibe of the hostel! It was calm and peaceful, and the building was beautiful. This stay definitely added an extra element of uniqueness to my experience in Japan. It is also in a good location, being a short walk to convenience stores and a train station. All of the staff were kind and helpful too.
Well located, amazing staff.
Maybe the aircon was a bit too low, we were in the middle of july, so the climate was very hot and humid.
lovely traditional building, fine retrofit renovations to suite purpose, terrific staff, though facilities crowded in peak am.
small kitchen overcrowded & shower wait time
Guesthouse Toco was a fantastic place to stay, offering the perfect balance of respite and fun. The property is beautiful - looks like a zen garden/Japanese movie set - and the dorms, shared spaces (kitchen, dining area, lobby/bar), and bathrooms/showers were exceptionally clean. I would 100% stay here again. It felt like stepping into a community, and felt like a very safe place to come home at the end of the day and rest, or even just hang around. Toco also provided us with lots of recommendations of what to do and see in Tokyo, which restaurants to go to and more... it's all in a booklet they have in the lobby. We consulted this many times, and was very helpful having never been to Tokyo before. The location is prime - less than 5 minutes walking distance from a metro station, and walking distance from Ueno Park, a pretty central location in the city.
Nothing! The only thing to know is that the age range of the guests veers older (usually 25+), so if you're a young traveller like myself and my friends (21-23), it's not like a typical hostel where you can party etc., which is totally fine. Because of this, be weary that some guests will want a more quiet vibe in the rooms in the nighttime so you can't really chat too much past ~11pm. More of a whisper vibe. But really, this isn't anything to complain about, more like a disclaimer to other younger guests looking for a place to stay.
The staff were so kind and helpful. All the areas, were well maintained and clean. The location was super convenient. Would definitely visit again!
The Guesthouse was beautiful and immaculately clean, it always subtly smelt of incense and was so peaceful. My favourite stay of the entire trip and I was only here for 3 days. The staff were so kind and helpful, I had a massive bag as I have overpacked and they without complaint helped me take my bag all the way up to my room and on check out day all the way back to reception. The Breakfast was cheap But delicious and sitting and talking to other travellers was very pleasant in the morning, it felt like a home kitchen. The welcome drink was a nice touch and I tried my first ever plum wine. Thank You to the staff at guest house toco !
Nothing it was great
This is a super cute guesthouse!
Everything was amazing! One of the best hostels I've stayed in.
- Cute garden and house - Nice bar (with one small free drink) to socialise - Location was close to a subway
- Blankets were not inside bed sheets (disgusting) - Too few toilets and showers for the amount of people - One of our mattresses was wayyy too soft and I could feel the springs in my bed (not possible to get another mattress)
Great guesthouse! Nicely located & great ammunities! The bar is nice to meet people and the staff organize events in some evenings (like board games). Dorms were confortable and showers clean! Highly recommend! Good price and location for Tokyo!
Loved the traditional aspect.
One of the best hostels where I stayed. Very nice traditional building, clean, friendly staff, they offer a very nice optional Japanese breakfest. It's not super close to the typical tourist areas but hast a nearby metro station. I would definitely stay there again!
Beautifully restored traditional building. Friendly and inclusive. A free drink at the bar each night!
A bit of a walk to get to good food places.
such a cute place to stay in a quiet but still well connected part of tokyo!!
Clean and spacious showers, lovely old house with traditional details, good hairdryers, good airconditioning, surprisingly comfortable bunks
Upper bed is a bit of a hassle - it’s really high up, there’s only one hook so not much storage space. The lockers under the bottom bunk though are very spacious but at least in the 8-bed dorm there’s no space to have your stuff easily accessible or to open up your suitcase without being on others’ way (packing seems like a nuisance to others). The guesthouse is located in a calm area but there aren’t many restaurants and it’s maybe bit out there for example compared to Asakusa. No early check in (even 1 hour before). Some of the staff also seemed a bit unwelcoming.
Beautiful Japanese boarding house. Staff was helpful and friendly. Other guests were courteous. Being a Japanese building with thin walls, it could be loud if people were not respectful, but the staff create a respectful, courteous atmosphere that was mirrored by my fellow guests. It was fun to strike up conversations with other travelers in the lounge area.
Literal perfection. Like step backing in time.
That I couldn’t stay longer because we had to keep travelling.
This is a hostel that doubles as a social hub, and that’s a good thing. Everything is communal, which creates a cozy, homely, and down-to-earth atmosphere. For solo travelers, it’s a great place to make meaningful connections, whether in the resting area or the lounge, where you can choose to eat together with other travelers. You can even get a warm, freshly made breakfast for a small fee, and there are washing machines available as well for a small fee. The hosts were very social, welcoming, and helpful. By the way, the place is genuinely beautiful, just like in the photos. In terms of location, it’s situated in an area surrounded by sentōs (Japanese bathhouses), which is perfect for anyone wanting to experience that side of Japanese culture. If that’s not your thing, there are also private shower stalls available inside the hostel (for those who are wondering).
It’s honestly hard to find anything negative to say. The only thing to keep in mind is that you are sharing a room with other travelers, so everyone has to be considerate of each other. For example, if you come back around 10 PM (which I personally think is still a reasonable time), some people may already be asleep. So if you need to grab something from your luggage, it can be difficult not to make any noise. It’s best to prepare the things you’ll need in advance.
Being nested in a traditional neighborhood close to Iriya station as well as the over 100 year old building. The service by Kotaro and Arisa was outstanding.
Simply love this place. It was my second time staying there and I'm definitely going to return. It's an old, cozy Japanese town house, centrally located in the middle of Tokyo. There are not many rooms so that it is usually really quiet, clean and the people are really nice.

Everything :)
It was affordable. The neighbourhood was nice. The beds were quite comfortable and big for a bunk bed. I was happy with the beds. The bathroom and the shower were clean everytime I used them.
I think I underestimated the impact of my journey. I had a long flight of 14 hours to Japan. And then I reached this hostel. I haf to carry my suitcase two floors up. And then I had a upper bunk bed. So I was very tired. The bathroom and the shower were downstairs. Only when I was leaving the hostel I realised there was an attached bathroom next to my room, which I was not made aware of.
The property is beautiful, the location is accessible for transit and food, the staff were lovely, the privacy curtains around each bed were great, the amount of storage provided for each bed in addition to secure locker were great, the electrical outlet access was perfect, the shared areas were clean and well set up.
It was all great, so there was nothing to change.
Maison traditionnelle 🥰!!
The staff was great! Friendly, engaging, and warm. They made a point remember guest's names, and were sincere when asking guests about their day, adventures, or general conversation. The beds were comfortable and you are provided bedding to stay warm, and a bath towel. They also have amenities like toothbrushes and more available. Very clean! Staff does a good job of regular cleaning all areas; kitchen to toilets to showers, etc...no issues on cleanliness. Good location!!! Right next to Iriya Station and within walking distance to several restaurants, konbini's, and more.
Not on the Hostel/Hotel but more on the guests; people would come in after midnight and people would be loud with their luggages or hairdryer at 1 or 2am...yet I ended up with a note from the Staff saying that my Snoring was keeping people awake. I did address this with the staff and they were apologetic saying it was a misunderstanding and that moving forward, they would talk to guests about quiet hours and they do provide earplugs.
Such a lovely hostel in Tokyo, located in a renovated traditional house. The location near Ueno station is top notch, with great recommendations of activities and restaurants shared by the staff, who's absolutely lovely. The place is super clean, the kitchen is well equipped, the bed are comfy, all great ! Be sure to take the delicious breakfast and to have a drink at the bar ! Really a gem in Tokyo !
If you are staying in the mixed dorm, beware that you will hear all the noises from the corridor as it is separated by wooden panels, that's something to take into account if you are a light sleeper. But if you are staying in the female dorm, you will sleep like a baby !
Honestly a great hostel with lots to offer outside of its location. Good space in the room even with a mixed dorm, privacy with curtains, perpetrated plugs, lockers and lots of bed space for suitcases was a bonus. Solid bar and a very tasty breakfast that shouldn't be missed. Lovely staff.
Surprisingly expensive all things considered, breakfast and laundry are not included.
Traditional Japanese style, beautiful garden, very nic and friendly staff
I loved the Japanese wooden style housing. I appreciated the slippers in all the bathrooms and when you entered the dorms. I loved the kind and welcoming staff and the free drink at the bar! The location was nice, much less overwhelming than central Tokyo. It felt nice being close to Shinto shrines, it’s a good vibe. I loved the sentos in the area as well! This is a wonderful place to stay, I highly recommend it!!
Nothing bad to say about it, it’s absolutely lovely!
人
I met nice people in this guesthouse. Staff is very friendly.
Nope
It has a pretty garden and it’s quite a unique stay.
Nothing I disliked particularly.
Lovely building, cozy interior. Liked the little sitting area in the shared room.Staff were friendly and helpful. Pretty close to a station. Complimentary drink in the bar was a nice welcome.
Not sure if this was mentioned in property description but there is a staircase to some of the shared rooms so it is a bit of a workout to get a full suitcase up there! Other than that, it was great!
Traditional style, beautifully maintained
Slightly musty smell at the head end of upper bunk in mixed dorm otherwise perfect stay!
The staff, the facilities, all of it was exceptional.
The building itself is really cool, it’s all wood and built in a traditional Japanese style. The garden was beautiful. The staff were all really lovely and smiley, and spoke good English which was helpful. The location for me was amazing, not right in the center of Tokyo but in a quiet neighbourhood with lots of cafes and bakeries nearby.
The wooden building is a bit of a nightmare design in a hostel 😅 the floorboards creak loudly with the softest steps (which I love, but not when people are returning in the early hours of the morning), the curtains around the beds were Not very effective, and my bed was at the front of the room which meant that everyone walking down the corridor could see straight into my bed and me sleeping. Also the door frames were very low (being in a traditional Japanese home) and the amount of times myself and others hit our heads was quite funny 😂. Also two of the guests in my room was extremely rude, but that’s no fault of the property itself
Loved my stay here. Clean, comfortable and a lovely place all around. Friendly staff. I loved this location too.
