Pleasant location

I - a 74 year old pensioner - was asked to leave the property at 4pm on a Friday in Portsmouth for allegedly being 'rude' to the proprietor.who puts his own needs above those of his guests. My "crime"? To have the temerity to question his policy of not servicing rooms during guests' stays. This is apparently on his website, but I have to confess it passed me by not once having encountered this policy anywhere else I've stayed before, but the owner reckons it's now the norm in hospitality now.. Anything guests require during their stay such as a refreshed room, empty bin, more tea, coffee, milk has to be requested by going downstairs and ringing the owner's doorbell rather than him providing it as is the norm in my experience.. £60 of £140 I had paid was refunded as a result of my leaving at the owner's request.

The thing that satisfied me most was the kindness of the owner. Excellent breakfast in a welcoming, home-like environment. The location of the B&B is excellent, 2 minutes from the beach, small supermarket around the corner for small needs. With bus number 1 you can reach the center. Thanks for the hospitality

Breakfast choices were good with quick service from a helpful and friendly host. The coast was only 200 yards away ...an easy, flat walk

The bedroom had a single bed, besides our double, which was ideal for dumping our bags etc. However, there was very little space on one side of the double ....not easy at all if I were a larger person!

Host accommodated us when I booked the wrong room. Great TV channel selection and breakfast was good. Good price.

Front door latch and room door was a bit fiddly and I thought it was locked. Double bed mattress dipped in the middle so we were almost onto each other. Instant coffee at breakfast?! It isn't hard to make a cafetiere. If you offer coffee, I expect the real stuff or at least warn that it's instant. No water jugs, only bottled water.

The owners were so lovely and accommodating! We stayed for the full weekend for Victorious Festival and it's barely a 20 mins walk from it so was very convenient

Honestly nothing I didn't like

Great hospitality by Valerie and Andy, even before I got there. The guest house is nice, cozy and welcoming. Began option were very nice and to add on that, I was allowed to stay for a longer check out. All in all Esk Vale is a great place which I will definitely recommend of. Thank you!

The private bathroom was located outside the room, which is a bit uncomfortable, however ii was told that during the coming winter it will be adju3, which will make the room perfedcct for a Solo traveler

Really near the beach (end of the road) and nice restaurants at Southsea. Very clean and well cared for. The owners are very kind and attentive. Breakfast is fresh and simple. You can park on the drive. I would stay again.

Friendly and helpful host (Andy). Accommodation was comfortable and a very convenient location for us (close to where a family member lives, as well as great for walking out to seafront and beach in both directions. A great selection of breakfast options provided.

My sister and I have just left after a two night stay and we can't thank you enough. The B&B was so peaceful. The twin room (number 5) was lovely. The beds were comfy and everything was spotless. Hats of to the chef because our breakfasts one full English and one egg, tomato, mushrooms and beans with gluten free toast were cooked to perfection. Lovely extras like yoghurt, fruit and cereal ment we started the day very full. The location was great, easy walking distance to the beach, pier, shops, cafés, restaurants and bars. Great for couples, friends or families. There is loads to do such as crazy golf, amusements, pedalos, museums, shopping, aquarium etc. The B&B was great value for money and we would definitely stay again and recommend to friends and family. The check in process was simple, Andy was very very friendly and had good knowledge of the local area. The room was very good, just the right size for me. The breakfast was probably one of the best full Englishes I have had at a hotel/guest house.

Well organised, for example parking permits available. Host welcoming and helpful. Fan provided which helped in the very hot spell.

Room was very small but this was reflected in the price and adequate for a few nights.

The location was fantastic, quiet and just a short walk to the seafront. The shower was a good size and there was plenty of hot water. The breakfast was good.

We ended up not staying and had to book different place, so actually just lost money by entering the room and leaving it after 5 minutes. No space for parking - be prepared to look for a parking space few streets away. Room (number 3) had smell of drainage. 0 soundproof - you can hear people steps in a room above...

Lovely host and really lovely breakfast. Best eggs I've ever had. Very comfortable and inviting dining room.

We spent one night at this lovely little guest house. The family room was just perfect with 2 bedrooms within one unit. It suited us perfect as we were travelling with our teenage son. Everything was spotless. The decor was lovely and there was lots of lovely personal touches. The beds were comfortable and quality crisp bed linen and duvets. Breakfast was absolutly delicious. Husband and son had full English and I hsd poached eggs cooked to perfection! The owners of the hotel were lovely and welcoming. The position of the guest house is also ideal as just a short walk down to south pier where we had a nice time at the arcade and the beach is beautiful! Lots of cafes & coffee shops to stop and watch the world go by, the canoe lake is also a short walk away and can get to Gunwharf keys quickly via bus or uber. We would stay again for sure.

I was in town for one night for a friends birthday party so decided to stay the night. Esk Vale is a really nice guest house, located close the seafront. My room was a decent size, very bright, clean and had a spacious shower. Breakfast was cooked to order and very good. The owner, Andy, was very courteous and polite. I would definitely stay again. Recommended.

The breakfast was excellent, really fresh and plenty of it.

The beds were a little uncomfortable but thats just a preference. The shower head wouldn't adjust but again just a preference.

A small, very nice hotel. I had a room on the second floor with a comfortable bed and a bathroom outside the room (but only mine, as it's the only room on the floor). There's a sink in the room itself. The host was very friendly and the breakfast was very good. My watch rated my sleep at 94; I've never had a rating that high. Considering the price, I'm very happy with everything.

Good locatie, good breakfast, good values for money

The guest house was clean, quiet and well equipped. In fact I was surprised how lovely and quiet it was - I heard a door close once, but otherwise nothing. The breakfast was great - and generous. It was very convenient for buses, a supermarket and the beach (all 5 min away). I also found a nice place to eat 10 min away. Exceedingly good value!

The only down point for me was the bed, which was quite saggy. The mattress felt a bit tired and worn-out. Also, it was quite warm, so a sheet as well as the duvet would have been good.

Andy, ein sehr netter und umsichtiger Gastgeber, hat uns mit einem sehr leckeren Frühstück versorgt. Das Zimmer war sehr sauber und liebevoll eingerichtet.

Wow what a hidden gem the owners could not do enough to help you. My cruise was delayed by 4 hours I asked if I could stay a little longer and that was not a problem. Room was spotless, breakfast was just enough for me all was cooked to order. Would highly recommended to anyone this guest house. This is how a guest house should be run and I work in customer service so maybe I am probably a Little more aware of how a guest should be treated. Well Done if I am ever in Portsmouth again will definitely rebook

The location, the service ( even the option to buy a bottle of water for example) , the hospitality, quality and cleanliness of the room and breakfast was 11 out of t0. Additionally the service provided regarding the upgrade for the room so another guest could stay the night for a local event, made the experience unforgettable. Can recommend this guest house and will very happily stay here again when in the area. Thank you!

Welcoming staff and comfortable room. So nice to have a big window, high ceiling, and be able to make a cup of tea which has become a rarity in bigger hotels. Excellent value for the quality of room and breakfast.

A little noisy being able to hear other people moving about and coming and going but not a problem if you're not a light sleeper!
