Reviewed Jun 1, 2025Such a great spot, easy to find, calm & peaceful, really well appointed for a short stay with a family with small children. We loved having breakfast out on the deck and we walked to the pub in the evening for dinner which was great. Also the Pink Shop which is about 3mins up the street has delicious muffins and baked goods.

Reviewed May 16, 2025The location is AMAZING. Large fully fenced section directly across the road from the beach ! You can literally sit on the deck and have uninterrupted views of the water. Walking distance to the dairy, fish & chip shop or tavern✨️ The host has made the place very homely. There was even some milk already in the fridge for your cuppa on arrival ! Note: photo I've used is from the previous stay, as the weather was better, lol

The property was well set up, clean and comfortable. Very welcoming. Plenty of room to park car inside fence as well.

Reviewed Feb 28, 2025Great little bach with plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the views of the beach. We loved the big windows that opened up onto the deck and the kitchen was well stocked for us to prepare a few nice meals. We loved having the trail right outside our door for walking or biking and the seabird center just minutes away. Do yourself the favor of going to see the birds 2 hours either side of tide coming in. Out of this world experience seeing thousands of godwit and oystercatcher!

Many nice small touches. Very reasonably priced especially for a family with young children. The front patio was very nice. Lovely view of the sea.

The reason for 3/4 for comfort is a personal choice. I prefer a firmer mattress, I’m sure it is nice and comfy for others but a bit too soft for me. I struggle with lower back pain.

Reviewed Dec 8, 2024Location was excellent, with the sea and cycle trail just across the road and the interesting local shop within walking distance. There was plenty of space for parking, with easy access to the property. . The deck and outside furnishings were perfect for enjoying the balmy evenings which we were lucky to experience.
The only thing we had problems with was the television which was very modern and so, for me was complicated. If my family member had not been present, I would not have been able to use. I did wonder whether something more easily operated and simple would be preferable. On the last night, despite trying everything, we were not able to get the Tv off Mute so were unable to use it. We met the owner on our departure morning and he explained that sometimes atmospherics play their part with technology in this area.

The washing machine was temporarily out of order so had to make a trek to a laundromat but totally not an issue for us.

Reviewed Jul 10, 2023Thank you to our host Paul for excellent communication, letting us arrive a bit early, for the fresh organic milk in the fridge and for sharing this special place with us. Although it was cold and grey we enjoyed relaxing and catching up. We slept very well in the comfortable beds which had lovely linen. The shower was great with plenty of hot water. The house is warm and cozy. As other reviews mention, the house is even more beautiful than the photos. The neighbours are super friendly too...thank you for the help I received when I got my car in a pickle. I really recommend Paul's lovely bach highly.

Not sure if it was the tv, the aerial or the atmospheric conditions but the television reception was so bad that we couldn’t watch anything. Not necessarily a bad thing to turn off the tv, but for those relying on it could be annoying.

Reviewed Jan 16, 2023After driving on one of the straighter roads in NZ coming from the Coromandel peninsula, and then enjoying the lovely view of the Coromandel mountains and clouds reflecting on the water, we were thrilled to see that Sea Urchin Cottage gave us this view. The cottage is delightful! It had everything we needed, and the host included some lovely little touches that seems to be missing from some places these days, such as lollies on the pillow. The cottage is perfect for a family as well as a company of 6. The outside verandah is conducive to comfortable outside eating. This is a place I could stay in for a few days as it is a home away from home. It’s in an area with lots of birds which bird enthusiasts would appreciate. host Paul and his wonder dog were very responsive and helpful in our communications.
