Reviewed Apr 29, 2026You need a car, but the benefits are many. There's a beach you're allowed to access (where we found pieces of New Zealand jade) which is great to walk along. The house is comfortable and well-appointed, and we really appreciated the access to a washing machine. The shower is hot, the beds are comfortable. We loved our stay!

Reviewed Mar 28, 2026Lovely to find bread, condiments and fruit available for our use at breakfast. We had poor weather so we didn’t sit outside but the house was very comfortable and warm. Large area to park the cars and not far from the beach ( can walk a few hundred metres) or town ( need to drive).Beautiful setting and such a pretty garden to look out at. Would definitely recommend this house to others.

While it worked perfectly for us, including location, it does need a bit of planning due to the distance to the nearest shops, restaurants etc.

Getting to the property and letting ourselves in was a breeze thanks to the clear directions. The train that passes once during the night seems like an earthquake otherwise the place is quiet.

Everything we could need was available at the property with some nice unexpected items available - such as fruit, cereal, bread and milk. Great cooking facilities.

Reviewed Dec 1, 2025We arrived in the rain, and this very cozy home was just what we needed. We were able to cook a nice dinner and just watch the rain from the lovely porch. The property is so well landscaped, and the air smelled wonderful with citrus blossoms.

Reviewed Nov 12, 2025Het was dijn dat we een eigen plek hadden, de keuken was goed toegerust om zelf te koken, tv die het deed, het was fris dus fijn dat de airco/verwarming het deed. Alle vogeltjes horen is superleuk.
Het is jammer dat er geen horren zijn; al veel last van de kleine ‘bijtertjes’. Het ligt dicht langs een weg waar 100 km per uur wordt gereden; er is een spoorrail die gebruikt wordt en een boer die over ‘het erf’ loopt.

Reviewed Mar 14, 2025The property is in an excellent location just a short drive to Hokitika and Greymouth. The cottage is very comfortable and well equipped and the fresh fruit, eggs, milk and bread were very welcome. Although it is only a short way off the highway it was quiet as the traffic did die down considerably in the evening. The only thing to note is that a train came through every morning around 5am which we did hear and feel in the property. Overall though this is a lovely property with a really nice garden and we enjoyed our stay here.

Reviewed Feb 26, 2025This was our second stay at Mont’s Cottage and won’t be our last! The location is perfect, halfway between Hokitika to the south and Greymouth to the north. But you’re away from any crowds, traffic, noise. Being in the country is very relaxing, the cottage is so sweet. You lack for nothing thanks to Elena’s hospitality. A quick text to her when you arrive and the place is yours. A nice welcome basket of fresh fruit, milk, butter and jam in the fridge, washing machine with detergent supplied, comfy couches, dining tables indoors and out, beautiful flowers and landscaping all around the property. The kitchen and pantry are so well stocked, you’d think you were at home! This is the perfect place to stay! Thank you Elana.

Highway traffic noise meant keeping doors and windows closed for ‘rush’ periods on the state highway. Not much view, except for the garden which made up for it. The location between Hokitika and Greymouth really fitted in with our touring plans.

Reviewed Aug 13, 2023Super clean, warm and comfortable. The hosts had really thought of everything - which is always so appreciated! It’s a great location, lovely wee house and garden. Close walk to a beautiful West Coast beach.
The pull out sofa bed - it would be fine for a small child but really not suitable for an adult /large teenager! Very uncomfortable. The property is close to the main road which isn’t a problem in winter but you’d need to be conscious of the traffic noise if you were wanting to relax outside in the warmer months.
