Hills Vista Lodge

We have stayed here several times with our family and have always had a wonderful experience. The host, Conrad, is friendly, helpful, and welcoming. The accommodation is clean, comfortable, and very well equipped with everything you need for a relaxing stay. The location is exceptional if you are visiting Hobbiton—it is so convenient while still being set in a beautiful, peaceful country setting. We love the surroundings and the welcoming atmosphere, and it has become a place we are happy to return to with our family. Highly recommended!

Great location for Hobbiton. The hosts were lovely and welcoming, and having the fire going when we arrived was such a nice touch. Comfy beds and electric blankets made it warm and cosy.

Fantastic location if you’re visiting Hobbiton — just 5 minutes down the road! We were warmly greeted on arrival and shown through the property. The hosts also provided a helpful folder with information on local activities, shops and places to eat. We really appreciated the thoughtful breakfast provisions, including fresh eggs, milk, juice and bread for the following morning. The property was very comfortable, welcoming and well equipped. We had a lovely stay and would happily recommend it.

We loved it so much, we booked 2 more nights and made it our base for Hobbiton and Rotorua tours. Has everything you could need, including breakfast provided.

Location was great as it was right next to Hobbiton which we did the next morning! The place had some lovely LOTR decor and a great TV where we watched the first movie with the fire lit (the owner was most kind and helped us light in for when we arrived after dinner). Beds were comfy, very clean and some milk, eggs, yoghurt, bread and cereal for breakfast Meeting the dog and cats were a bonus!

Everything. Its clean, comfortable and easy to book in. Beautiful venue. Quiet and peaceful. We went out to dinner Peter and I and my 93year old mother told us she didn't want to go anywhere she just wanted to stay home watching TV and being comfortable on the sofa. Thank you.

Wonderfully appointed and located, this accommodation was AMAZING. It’s minutes away from Hobbiton and a short drive from downtown Matamata. The beds were comfortable and there is so much space! The kitchen was stocked — including eggs from their chickens, everything worked well and you didn’t want for anything. The hosts were so friendly and welcoming. Shout out to the sweetest cats and dog.

Two tiny things. All pillows were quite stiff. Requiring me to use my down coat. And the fun activity of a coloring book would be so much better with better pencils.

Of all the properties we stayed in during our 2 week tour of NZ, this was the best. Very close to Hobbiton for those wishing to visit and full of LotR memorabilia. Unfortunately, as we were doing both the day and evening tours of Hobbiton we didn't have that long to stay in this lovely property... Very welcoming owner and they had left us with eggs, jams, a loaf of bread, muffins, milk, yoghurts and orange juice to name but a few items. Just wish we could have taken advantage of it all but we had to leave early the next morning too so our stay was far too short... Thoroughly recommended!

One toilet between 4 of us but we knew that when booked so not a huge problem

Perfect for Festival one. Everything I needed and it was good to have food provided for breakfast. Easy to find coming back in the dark. This place could easily sleep 6, 8 more crowded.

Very minor point… Technically breakfast ingredients were provided to cook yourself, not a prepared breakfast.

Location was perfect, we had an event at Lake Karapiro and it was close to drive to everyday. Hosts were lovely and easy to communicate with and very responsive. Apartment had everything we needed and the food provided for breakfasts were perfect.

We stayed at Hills Vista Lodge the evening before our Hobbiton tour which is just a few minutes away. It was so nice not to have to get up early and rush out. The owner, Briony, met us when we arrived to show us around the house and answer any questions. We appreciated the provided breakfast items (fresh eggs, bread, yogurt, cereal, juice, coffee) and the washer and dryer so we could do a load of laundry during our 2 week vacation. Our two teenage boys were thrilled to each have their own rooms! :) We also enjoyed hanging out on the comfy couch and watching Lord of the Rings dvds, perfect rainy night family activity.

Excellent rooms, cute decor if you’re into lord of the rings (which is why we were staying), so close to Hobbiton and the host was so lovely. Fresh breakfast of fruit, yogurt, breads, cereals, eggs, juice, tea and coffee. The dryer was a godsend as we got soaked!

It’s not a dislike just a mention that one of the double beds has a very firm mattress.

Loved the tranquil, rural location, and close to Hobbiton which was the reason for our stay. Everything was very clean and comfortable, and enjoyed that there were chickens and cats, felt like the complete package.

Beds were a little hard - a minor issue

Location was amazing, the large open lounge area was homey, the owners were warm and provided fresh juice and eggs which were greatly appreciated and the Hobbit memorabilia throughout were a nice touch that encouraged the excitement for our upcoming tour. Overall, the most exceptional and homey, home away from home.

This is a great location, just 4 mins from Hobbiton! The most kind owner and a fully equipped cottage which is langre, comfy and stylish. There were fresh ingredients for a full breakfast in the kitchen (eggs, milk, butter, jam, cerial, coffee, bread, etc.), and the lights were on outside waiting for us helping us to find the pleace easily - we arrived after dark. The house and our stay was great!

If I have to tell something then it would be the price but the place was really worth every penny!

Amazing - home away from home. Excellent facilities. We Felt very welcome and hosts very accommodating. Everything was so thoughtful - attention to detail at every turn. Even a Christmas tree.

It’s November 7th. We have 2 properties we run as short term rentals. Today we were talking about how much we loved this one. The breakfast is such a nice touch. It was roomy, comfy, and clean. We felt welcomed and appreciated! Keep it up!

This place is fantastic. Heaps of room, very comfortable, great kitchen and a gorgeous breakfast supplied. The location was perfect, just up the road from Hobbiton.

This is a gorgeous place in a beautiful location. Our hosts were very friendly and welcoming, always happy to help with any requests. We loved that breakfast was provided, such a great bonus for weary travellers and much appreciated. Our one niggle: We understand being in a farming area flies can get pretty crazy and we loved that there were insect nets on all the windows- not something commonly seen in NZ houses. Somehow the pesky things still made it in though and caused a wee bit of frustration when trying to sleep in! Not sure there is much that can be done about that. We were lucky to have gorgeous weather and the flies seemed to love this too! Bottom line: We would happily stay here again.

Our mattress was way too firm but we could have chosen the other one. There were wasps in the bathroom in the morning.. possibly came through the exhaust fan. They went after we turned on the fan but spraying them to kill them made a mess!

Very comfortable, clean and location was great. We adjusted our amount of people staying from 2 to 6 and there was no issue.

5 min drive to hobbiton which was great and what we were after. They have some cats that are friendly. They also have chickens which you get fresh eggs from !. Hosts very friendly and helpful. Clean and tidy inside and out. 3 great bedrooms with washing machine and dryer which helps.

20 min drive to the closest town but then it's right next to hobbiton. It's a compromise worth it.

This was the most wonderful accommodation! The location was perfect for Hobbiton and the countryside is idyllic. The space was perfect for our group of 6, lots of great books, maps, dvds and cozy seating and very clean. The breakfast of farm fresh eggs, butter, jams and coffee also unexpected and amazing. Also very friendly check in. Wish we had stayed longer.

Pros: close to Hobbiton Movie Set, Allowed us a one hour late check out, kind host allowed us to help feed the chickens, washer and dryer

Cons: a number of crawling insects inside both dead and alive, a layer of dust on everything, very thick layer of dust on all the baseboards, headboards, and carpet against the wall

We love this barn house! We feel right at home. Love the little things that Con and Briony do - the farm fresh eggs from their chickens are the best!

The breakfast was freshly supplied eggs, fresh milk with cereals and toast the views from the front door were absolutely stunning.

Perfect accommodation for families. Has everything you need for a comfortable stay. A bonus that breakfast staples are included. A little bit like a farm stay with chooks, cows and cats. Perfect location to several towns with beautiful scenery. And of course perfect location to Hobbiton. Highly recommend.

We loved our stay at Hills Vista Lodge! The location is fantastic and Briony was a lovely, welcoming host. The beds and furnishings are super comfy and the place has everything you could need. Hosts were very welcoming. Briony went to the effort of lighting the log fire on a cold and rainy night to keep us even more comfortable. Kitchen had generous breakfast provisions, including fresh eggs from their chickens. Excellent location for visiting Hobbiton.
