While the spa experience was pleasant and the staff were warm, professional, and attentive, we felt that this area has the greatest potential for further enhancement. Wunderschön gelegen am Ende eines ruhigen Strands. Die Anlage unfasst einige Bungalows, ein Restaurant und Wellnesseinrichtungen. Diese sind auf dem Areal gut verteilt. Ich habe nur beim Essen und Yoga andere Gäste gesehen. Das Personal ist sehr zuvorkommend. Der Koch kommt persönlich an jeden Tisch und kocht bei Kapazität auch mal Speisen, die nicht auf dem Menu stehen. Pool und Garten sind sehr schön und gut gehalten, ideal für Ruhesuchende.

Das Essen war super, der Service war zuvorkommend. Die Lage ist wirklich aussergewöhnlich mit Privatstrand. Die gesamte Anlage ist wunderschön. Die Möglichkeit für gratis Yoga war top.

Es ist halt etwas abgelegen, aber wenn man es weiss, kein Problem. Wir hatten nur etwas Schwierigkeiten, das Hotel zu finden, da es kein Schild hatte.

Location was wonderful, quiet, beautiful, clean, safe. Staff and service are outstanding. Chef would cook for you anything you like with such enthusiasm, nice surprise.

The rooms on the ground floor are little bit dark and the terrace is shared. Upper level room was beautiful.

И можно ни в чем себе не отказывать. В отеле реально можно отдохнуть и расслабиться. Мы жили в доме с видом на океан и с бассейном. По крыше утром бегали бурундуки, очень милые. вообще в отеле очень много живности. Нам очень понравился отель. Надеюсь вернемся еще.

What an amazing way to end our trip. The staff were so attentive and kind and the bar tender makes the best cocktails in Sri Lanka. The property and rooms are so beautifully designed to immerse you in nature, we loved watching kingfishers fly in and out for the restaurant ponds. The beach is one of the most beautiful beaches we have ever visited, we watched turtle hatchlings run to the water and sea eagles fishing for breakfast. All the pool areas are gorgeous. The staff were also super accommodating on our last day, our flight left at 4am and they provided us with a day room until we left at 10pm. A perfect and peaceful end to our trip.

The restaurant and bar were somewhat expensive in comparison to some of the other places we stayed, though the chef is very good and the cocktails were exceptional. I would have had a treatment in the spa, but again the price was quite high.

The Service was exception, Fabian the Hotel Director was there to great us and he also was up very early to see us before departing. kavi and the new member of the guest relation team (Arun i believe) were helpful and showed us around and checked on us during the stay. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of people in the bar, the restaurant at dinner, breakfast and during the day but everyone was exceptional kind, caring and professional. Should also thank the chef that came out to ask what we would like to eat and prepared an amazing meal just for us.

Stunning property, beautifully integrated into lush greenery with palm trees, ponds, rocks, and two wonderful pools. The retreat truly feels like a hidden oasis, right by one of the most beautiful beaches. Everything looks even better in real life than in the photos. We stayed in a lovely sea-view bungalow with a balcony, accessed via a charming wooden bridge. We almost saw more wildlife from our balcony than on our safaris — birds, monkeys, water monitors, and even porcupines. Every bungalow is different, and each one is beautiful. The food was absolutely delicious (go for the traditional Sri Lankan dishes), there’s a great breakfast selection and amazing cocktails. The staff are lovely and made us feel genuinely welcomed and well cared for throughout our stay. We also enjoyed the complimentary well-guided yoga lessons and had booked some spa treatments — they are on the pricier side, but absolutely worth it. We can’t wait to come back!

Everything is wonderful. A wardrobe to hang clothes would be great though. Some simple gym equipment a like free weights, kettlebells and a simple bench - would be a welcome addition to the yoga temple.

The way that the architecture blends in with nature, the private terraces, the outdoor spa… but all these wouldn’t be impressive if it weren’t for the ones working there, who are the nicest, kindest, beautiful people!

An unforgettable experience – highly recommended! This hotel was absolutely amazing and truly one of the best holidays of my life. Everything was perfectly organized, very personal, and felt boutique and tailor-made. The nature is beautiful and incredibly peaceful, with lots of animals around, making it deeply relaxing. The food was outstanding — delicious and thoughtfully prepared. The spa was exceptional. Lasanti gave me one of the best Swedish massages I have ever had — and I live in Sweden, so this says a lot. Outstanding quality and professionalism. I am extremely grateful for this experience and will definitely come back. Highly, highly recommended!

Truly a retreat, a special place to be - the atmosphere was very peaceful, the accomodation was comfortable and tasteful, all details taken care of, staff and service were absolutely phenomenal, the beach and the nearby Buddhist temple also felt very special and unlike the touristic spots down South.

Like Visiting Family — Warm, Welcoming, and Truly Special From the very first moment I arrived, I was met with such kindness and warmth — it honestly felt like I was visiting relatives, not checking into a hotel. The atmosphere is cozy and full of heart, and the staff make it unforgettable. One of the lovely girls who welcomed me felt like a little sister — so sweet and genuine. I don’t remember her name, but I’ll never forget her energy and kindness. When I was leaving, we even hugged goodbye. It felt like leaving family behind. The manager was simply amazing — kind, thoughtful, and very professional. And the chef! He personally came out to check if I enjoyed the food (which I absolutely did — the seafood was insanely delicious). You can feel that they all truly care. Everyone smiles here. Everyone is friendly. And the vibe is something I’ll carry with me. I’m already dreaming of coming back — again and again.

Super entspannte Atmosphäre. Auf dem großen Anwesen mit wenigen Gästen kann man sich richtig fallen lassen. Super freundliches Personal, alles perfekt sauber. Der Koch hat alle Wünsche erfüllt. Der Strand ist wunderschön, ruhig und leer. Eigentlich war alles perfekt. Super schönes Zimmer mit tollem Balkon und Blick auf den Strand.

Yoga hätte etwas vielfältiger und anspruchsvoller sein können und mehr Optionen bieten dürfen. Preise für Spa und zusätzliches Yoga teilweise ein Vielfaches im Vergleich zu außerhalb des Retreats. Da braucht man sich nicht wundern, wenn es nicht genutzt wird und Leute extrem gehen. Das Bad in unserem Zimmer war oben offen.

Tranquil location in beautiful surroundings. Facilities are great as is the staff. They go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. The food, whether local or western was delightful each time. Great freshly caught fish and curry dishes. Ask Fabian for a lunch originating from the Dutch period. Everyone from restaurant and kitchen staff to cleaners, wellness staff, groundsmen etcetera were all just really helpful and friendly. Special thanks to mr. Udara, Wijaya, Sanjeewa and Lasantha.

This is an incredible and unique place. Beautiful, tranquil and immersed in nature. The beach is very special, a natural reserve where you can watch the stars at night as there is no light pollution around. Our room was very tastefully decorated, comfortable and stylish and the overall property and estate is amazing. The restaurant serves great food and staff is incredibly attentive and welcoming. They even organised a little birthday surprise at breakfast.

Sometimes there were some minor communication problems with staff, also due to language, but nothing major.

Such a gorgeous place, so close to a stunning beach, and the facilities are lovely (spa, yoga, pool). The food and drinks were amazing and nothing was ever too much for the staff - the chef is incredible, as well as the talented barman, and all of the staff were so lovely!

We had 2 nights only at Sama Retreat. The place is superb! The location is very convenient from Colombo airport. The room was very nice, the surrounding of the jungle nature was amaizing. We had a view over the ocean which was very nice. The food was very good and with a lot of quantities. Their Sri Lankan cuisine is very good and the staff are very helpful and attentive to all needs. We tried also the spa and it was very good experience. A beautiful place

Sama retreats is amazing, a fantastic retreat that gives you the feeling you’re in a small paradise. The cottages are nicely spread with a lot of privacy and respecting the beautiful nature of the property. We stayed in the Chieftain cottage which has a beautiful private pool and view on the ocean. The cottage itself is very spacious and comfortable, it has a nice authentic atmosphere inside and outside. The staff of Sama retreats is just incredible, everybody working there is friendly, helpful and tries to give you the stay of your life. This really make the stay exceptional and something you’ll remember. A compliment for the chef, diner and breakfast are very good and personal wishes are always taken into account. Thank you Lasanthe and Vijaya for the great service during breakfast/diner, Fabian and Kavi for the hospitality and all the other employees as well for making it a stay we’ll not forget!

Sama is one of those rare places that feels almost sacred. From the moment we arrived, the sense of calm was immediate — the sound of the ocean, the open spaces, and the kindness of everyone on the team made it easy to slow down and just be. Our cottage was beautifully designed, blending perfectly with the natural surroundings. We loved waking up to birdsong and ending each day with a stroll along the quiet beach. The food was a highlight — fresh, nourishing, and full of flavor, prepared with such care by the chef. The Ayurvedic treatments were exceptional. The resident doctor was attentive and insightful, and the therapists clearly knew their craft. I left feeling lighter, calmer, and more grounded than I’ve been in a long time. If you’re looking for peace, authenticity, and a connection to nature — this is it. Sama isn’t flashy or overdone; it’s heartfelt, genuine, and deeply restorative.

На камнях можно порыбачить, если вы со спиннингом. Очень вкусная еда в ресторане отеля. Шеф повар великолепен. Очень вежливый и услужливый персонал. По территории бегают обезьяны, бурундуки, вараны.

Однако, если вам 30 лет или менее, то все что для некоторых является плюсом этого места, станет для вас минусом. Место настолько тихое и медитативное, что вам однозначно станет скучно через день, а ехать в этом районе даже если у вас машина просто некуда. Ночью истошно орут гекконы и бурундуки. А утром начинают беситься обезьяны. Услужливость персонала может показаться навязчивой и если вам просто хочется посидеть молча, вам тут не дадут этого сделать. Обязательно спросят как дела и чем помочь, лично я этого не люблю и предпочитаю чтобы не трогали на протяжении всего отдыха. Ну и отдельная особенность, стоимость услуг и еды в чеках и меню указана без налогов и сервисного сбора. Это то чего я не люблю совсем. Так делают многие на Шри Ланке, но не все. И никогда не приезжайте сюда в сезон дождей или межсезонье. Все вокруг домов становится одним большим болотом.

Das Essen war hervorragend und frisch zubereitet und das Frühstück liess keine Wünsche offen. Die morgendliche Yogalektion war toll und die Massageanwendungen super.

Although the spa services were of good quality, the pricing felt excessive. Charging between USD 150 and 200 for a massage reflects a very high margin for the hotel. On top of that, the additional VAT—disclosed only at the time of settling the final bill—creates a sense of hidden costs. This lack of transparency makes the experience feel overpriced. Compared to how the hospitality industry in Sri Lanka has operated for decades, this approach marks a clear shift. Since the 2022 economic crisis, many hotels appear to be in a rush to maximize revenue, often at the expense of guest trust. This is not unique to Sama Retreat, but rather part of a broader trend across the country.

We absolutely LOVED our stay! The hotel is beautiful and we felt calm and relaxed from the moment we arrived. What makes is really special is the staff. Everyone was exceptionally nice and helped us with everything we needed. Both food and cocktails were top! (take from a London foodie). We celebrated our wedding anniversary there and the team prepared an amazing dinner and cake for us with Lasantha taking extra care of us. We also loved the complimentary yoga classes with Saman. A special thanks to the manager, Fabian, who literally went not one, but many extra miles to make our stay special. We are definitely coming back!

I piatti di frutta tropicale sono una gioia per gli occhi e per il palato. Le lezioni di yoga al mattino sono state uno dei momenti più preziosi del soggiorno: praticare circondati dalla natura, con la guida sensibile e consapevole di Ashley, ci ha permesso di riconnetterci profondamente con noi stessi e con l’energia del luogo. Anche i trattamenti benessere sono stati un’esperienza rilassante e rigenerante, un vero momento di cura e ascolto. L’ambientazione è impagabile. This place is absolutely beautiful and the staff are so wonderful. It’s a gorgeous, architect-designed oasis leading onto a peaceful beach, with 2 pools, one being a natural pool surrounded by amazing vegetation. The rooms are lovely, with huge, very comfortable beds and there was complementary yoga each morning. The staff team are so friendly and warm - special mentions to the Director Fabian and to Kavi, who helped look after us and was especially caring to our two children. The cooks are also really excellent - if you appreciate good food you will be so happy here. The kids were delighted to spot monkeys and monitor lizards on their first day, and to visit the adjacent turtle rehabilitation centre. I was a little nervous about taking our two kids to such a quiet, peaceful place, not wanting to disturb other adult guests but needn’t have worried - the property is so spacious it often felt like we had it to ourselves.

I only wished we could have stayed longer. It was a perfect choice for our first few days unwinding after a long flight.

What a wonderful experience! We had a great time at this resort — everything was just right. The staff treated us with so much warmth and care, and we’re truly thankful for that. We left feeling relaxed and happy. Thank you so much for everything!

The best thing about Sama was the staff... from the chef to waiting staff to management was exceptional. My every need was catered for. I would like to mention Sumith the chef who was totally awesome. Extremely dedicated and an absolute gem of a resource to the establishment. Then there was Fabian who actually made my stay there at Sama. Wealth of knowledge... better than an encyclopedia... entertaining and accommodating. Thank you so much Fabian. Definitely will be back.

I was dissapointed that the beach in front of the retreat was not taken care of... this would take a mere few minutes a day. The beach was scattered with rubbish, plastic bottles and a plethora of other discards. Otherwise the beach is stunning.

An unbelievably amazing hotel, surrounded by jungle, nature, and wild animals, with direct access to the ocean—and best of all, no crowds of tourists. It’s the perfect place to relax and reconnect with the natural world around you. I’d also like to highlight the hotel staff separately: an amazing team—very friendly and truly customer-oriented.

Amazing stay at Sama Retreats, an absolutely stunning hotel, although the word doesn’t do it justice. It is a holistic compound, where you can truly relax and reconnect with nature and yourself. It is beautifully designed and furnished and is full of places to contemplate. The staff is wonderfully considerate and generous, and the whole experience is one of laidback luxury.

Nothing to dislike!

Our 1st time in Sri Lanka and Sama did not disappoint. Set on the coast within amazing gardens which allowed nature to thrive alongside…coconut crabs,monkeys,mongoose the list goes on…it was a real retreat with excellent facilities. Our hideaway was just that, authentic whilst having that 5* attention to detail and the staff were outstanding …the mixologist may have been our favourite 😆 The food all freshly prepared using the highest quality ingredients….we are already planning our next stay!

Everything was excellent

Sama Retreat is an absolute gem of a place. The grounds are huge with lovely gardens, and the stunning beach is only steps away. All of the staff were brilliant, welcoming and friendly. There are two choices for breakfast - western or Sri Lankan, we tried both and they were delicious and plentiful. The spa is amazing and I was very impressed with the two treatments I enjoyed there -a facial and a massage. Extremely professional spa staff in a very clean, hygienic and beautiful setting. The sounds of nature and running water was the best sound back drop I have ever experienced during spa treatment, and who would have thought a stint in the steam room after the massage would be so magnificent! We booked Sama Retreat as a treat for my birthday and we are very glad we did. What a relaxing and peaceful way to begin our tour of Sri Lanka. Thank you :)

The menu is a bit limited, especially for those such as us who don't eat fish or seafood. But what we did try from the menu was generous and delicious.

Everything. It is a phenomenal place. Something like this place is what you always dream about as a traveller, but never really get. And then you arrive at Sama. The Beach is a dream, the retreat feels like its luxery in the middel of the jungle.

Maybe the food can be better. Also, the restaurant should be moved to the beach front or somewhere, as it's a little stucking in the middle of the site

I’m very sad to leave this review as the stay at the hotel was actually very nice and the location is spectacular BUT they double charged me and promised to pay me back but I have been trying to get my money back for a month now and they stopped replying my messages!! I’ve contacted Hotels.com also but the customer service has not been helpful. I’ve never had any issues like this and I’m deeply sad about how this hotel stole my money

The staff were so attentive, helpful and caring towards our stay. They made us feel very welcome and comfortable. The private pool was amazing overlooking the sea, plenty of wildlife around to immerse yourself in. Sanjeewa’s cocktails were fantastic, he is a very talented mixologist. It was our 2nd wedding anniversary and they went above and beyond when finding this out with a private dinner with fireflies around us as well as a birthday cake made on the day! The couples oil massage was incredible and was such a great experience!

A beautiful tranquil retreat in a hideaway setting, with the most amazing quiet beach I have visited in Sri Lanka. The retreat offers so many opportunities to relax and unwind from the daily yoga sessions which were an amazing way to start the day. We opted for the couples package which I highly recommend, the massages were the best we have experienced. The restaurant staff were all so friendly and couldn't do enough to make our stay enjoyable. A special mention to Wijay and his team and the chefs came out every day to make sure we were happy with their food. Fabian was great company during our stay and Molly and Shae are always there with anything needed. We loved our fisherman's cottage and the rustic interior. All in all we would definitely return and recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing retreat.

This hotel is a true haven of tranquility! The beach is absolutely stunning, offering a slice of paradise for those looking to relax and connect with nature. The energy and vibe of the hotel are phenomenal, creating a uniquely welcoming and peaceful atmosphere. The massage area and yoga classes are held in one of the most serene and relaxing settings I’ve ever experienced. The overall ambiance of the hotel is magical, complemented by a super friendly staff who are always smiling and eager to help. Additionally, the internet connection was fantastic, which is a big plus for those needing to stay connected during their stay.

However, there are a few areas that could be improved. Communication with the staff can be challenging as many of them have limited English skills, which might lead to small misunderstandings. Furthermore, the restaurant options are somewhat disappointing, lacking variety or more refined flavors. Another issue is that the rooms don’t have curtains, which can be inconvenient for light-sensitive sleepers. Despite these minor issues, the overall experience was very positive, and I would recommend this hotel to anyone seeking a peaceful retreat and a deep sense of relaxation.

This property is a little gem!! It is much better than advertised on their website!! Located in a very wide area of nature, we felt very privileged since there are very few guests.. There are so many staff attending to everyone needs and the beach is truly precious, beautiful and clean and we were almost the only ones there!! In addition they have a good outdoor pool and a lovely and clean natural pool, an amazing Spa and Ioga facilities. In our room, we had all comfort including coffee and tea facilities and a very hot shower!! We had several requests outside of the box such as : iphone charger, toys for the beach, special drinks and they were answered in no time!!! They have a very good barman too, which was surprising to us! Thank you to all the lovely people of the resort!!

The restaurant is lovely but it is lacking in choice and the portions are on the small side for the price. That could definitely be improved especially if you stay longer…

Tucked away off the main road, this property is a true oasis. The friendliness and the attentiveness of the staff was second to none making every moment at Sama retreats memorable. Local food served was sensational with the chef kindly explaining the origins of each dish. The rooms are peaceful and tranquil, and while all the mod cons are available it does feel like you are stepping into another world. The beach is quiet and on most occasions the only others you will find are the local fisherman that are happy to offer a smile and a chat. We can’t wait to return.

The property is based within nature so it’s worth keeping that in mind for those that might be sensitive to the odd mosquito bite. The staff however are more than happy to provide any assistance to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Wow wow wow, what a stunning beachside property. We knew it was wellness focused (which my wife loved - especially the massages and sauna!) but there was so much more to this unique property like enjoying a cold drink by lovely pool or relaxing on the deserted beach. The staff were great, nothing was too much trouble. The room was spacious and well thought out with a private veranda. Would highly recommend and will definitely be back.
