Villa Thamburu, Bentota

Dit was onze meest favoriete hotel in heel Sri Lanka. Ik denk niet dat er een hotel is dat hier snel aan zal tippen. Om enkele zaken te noemen die geweldig waren; - het hotel zelf was ONGELOOFLIJK mooi, alles zat goed in elkaar, absoluut niet outdated - toen we toekwamen hebben kregen we een warm ontvangst met de boodschap dat we een room upgrade hadden gekregen voor onze honeymoon - het bed was zalig! - ondanks het weer was de setting, de lounge, het zwembad, de zeteltjes echt fantastisch - het personeel was uitermate vriendelijk, en niet storend dichtbij zoals is veel andere goede hotels. Ze komen niet te vaak vragen of alles wel in orde is, maar ze zijn er wel altijd wanneer je ze nodig hebt!! - het eten was UITZONDERLIJK lekker, ik heb nergens in Sri Lanka zo lekker gegeten als hier - normale prijzen voor kamer en eten, zeker niet duur, alles was heel duidelijk in de prijzen, in tegenstelling tot in veel andere hotels. Kortom echt een fantastisch verblijf!!!

Wij zijn echt kritische mensen en wij kunnen hier echt geen enkele slecht woord over zeggen. Ik kan alleen maar aanraden om hier naartoe te gaan!!!!

Our stay at Villa Thamburu was truly unforgettable and exceeded all our expectations. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with genuine warmth by the reception team, who made check-in seamless and ensured we felt at home from the very beginning. The chef deserves special recognition—the food was absolutely outstanding. Every meal was fresh, delicious, and beautifully prepared, making each dining experience something to look forward to. Every member of the staff was incredibly kind, professional, and attentive. They were always smiling, quick to help, and went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. A special thank you as well to the security guard, who was always welcoming, respectful, and made us feel safe and well looked after throughout our stay. The room itself was immaculate, with exceptional cleanliness in every area. It was clear that great care is taken to maintain the property to the highest standards. Thank you to the entire Villa Thamburu team for making our stay so special. Your outstanding hospitality, delicious food, attention to detail, and genuine care made this one of the best stays we’ve ever had. We highly recommend Villa Thamburu and can’t wait to return!

We absolutely loved our stay at Villa Thamburu! The property is new, clean and well-maintained. The staff is so friendly and helpful. We loved the food as well - the breakfasts starts with fresh fruit and then you can pick your mains so everything is prepared fresh. We also loved the pork and cashew curries from the dinner menu. There are some other restaurants in the area, but we chose to eat in the villa each night because it was that good! We also enjoyed watching the sunset on beanbags with drinks each night. Staying here was so relaxing and we can't wait to come back!

Die ruhige Atmosphäre, das außergewöhnlich gute Essen und das Service möchten wir besonders hervorheben. Wir haben 3 wundervolle Tage hier verbracht. Die Architektur hat uns sehr angesprochen. Ein Fitness und Spa Bereich ist in Planung, was ein zusätzlicher Punkt sein wird, dass wir gerne zurück kommen werden.

No minibar even when you call. No juice at all. Nothing. Water you need to call. Only red bull available. Or beer. No massage option. No spa. Toilet doors. Not working. Food basic. 500 euro per night? Should have.

Das Design ist sehr geschmackvoll und jedes Detail wurde überlegt und liebevoll gestaltet. Ein Hotel, in dem ich mich ab dem ersten Moment 100% wohl gefühlt habe. Die nahe Lage zur Straße ist clever gelöst, sodass man davon fast nichts mitbekommt. Dafür ist die Nähe zum leeren Strand einfach traumhaft. Das Essen ist hervorragend, der Service super freundlich und es wurde alles möglich gemacht ob Cocktail am Strand bei Sonnenuntergang, Early Checkin oder besondere Essenswünsche. Außerdem sieht und spürt man einfach, dass sich alle Angestellten wirklich gut um das Hotel und die Gäste kümmern.

Beautiful water front location. Very quaint and quiet. Exceptional beach. Rooms are good.

Floors are very slippery. Vegetarian food options are limited but whatever is available is good. But there is food all around Bentota and we didn’t find that to be a big issue especially since we don’t like being locked in the property the entire day.

We enjoyed the breakfast, although the choice was set so a bit regimented, with so few guests an al a carte choice would be an improvement. Sea was on the rough side with some currents so we didn't swim in the sea.

Готель хоч і новий, але за 3роки вже місцями «втомився». Дизайнеру порадив би прийняти ванну, з однієї сторони кран, з іншої клапан від переповнення, а злив підтікає, то це на один раз покупатися, бажання відпаде на більше. Стіл, щоб попрацювати - давить в руки, бо там полка, яка висувається. Більше всього печаль це за готелем, знов тук-тук, візьми тук-тук навіть на пляжі, зʼїж кокос, зазивали в ресторан.. ми ж не в міріссі або унаватуні, це вбиває відпочинок. Хоча на своєму пляжі ви в безпеці

Absolutely outstanding from start to finish. The property is as beautiful as the photos suggest. The location - in essence, you've got a private beach in front of the hotel - means day will drift by, between beach, pool, sun loungers, restaurant, and back again. The food was the best in all of Sri Lanka - not a single dish was an afterthought, including the Western and vegetarian dishes. Every meal was a delight, from the day of arrival (lobster pasta, prawn curry), to the day of departure (chicken cordon bleu with parmesan sauce, crab soup). Looked forward to breakfast every day - a platter of super ripe fruit (procured from the market every morning at 5am, apparently), a lovely fruit smoothie, good coffee (a rarity in Sri Lanka, in my experience),, generous bread basket, and then a selection of a Sri Lankan breakfast or a European brunch type offer. So, there's absolutely no incentive to leave the hotel! Superb all round.

A hotel run with Swiss precision and organization. Beautiful design, immaculate cleanliness, trained and friendly staff. Delicious à la carte meals. The beach is beautiful and clean, but it is difficult to swim due to the large waves and currents (but this is not the hotel's fault, as most of the island is like this).

Absolutely stunning. Was our last stop on a one month trip so spent a bit more than usual- well worth it. Building is stunning, right on the beach with bean bags for sunset! Staff are outstanding- especially Rohan, Sagan and Janika. Food is great too.

Beautifully designed select hotel with direct access to a stunning beach in a quiet location. The quality of the food and drink at the hotel was fantastic, with great choices for all meals. Staff could not be faulted. There is also a courtesy tuktuk for guest use.

The only thing it’s missing is a spa. Doesn’t need to be anything fancy, but a resident masseur that you can book would be great. Or maybe even a yoga class.

We had an absolutely magical stay at Villa Thamburu. The decor of the place is stunning and all the small details are absolutely nailed. It was so nice to be able to rest by the pool then just toddle down to the beach for a swim. The food served at the restaurant is fantastic too. All in 10/10, would highly recommend!

Das Hotel ist ein Traum. Die Zimmer sind wunderschön und auch die Anlage ist super gepflegt und sauber. Jeder einzelne Mitarbeiter ist zuvorkommend und freundlich, man wird immer angelächelt und jeder ist bemüht, dass der Aufenthalt perfekt ist. Das Essen im Restaurant ist zwar etwas teuerer als überall anders, dafür ist es auch sehr lecker. Die Lage am Strand ist auch Top.

I recently returned from a wonderful stay at Villa Thamburu, and it was easily the highlight of my trip to Sri Lanka. As a solo traveler, I found the property to be a beautiful, intimate sanctuary that offers the perfect blend of modern luxury and coastal tranquility. The Breakfast I felt compelled to mention this after seeing a bizarre 1/10 review from last week criticizing the food. I honestly couldn't disagree more—the breakfast was exceptional. From the traditional Sri Lankan hoppers to the fresh international options, everything was high-quality, beautifully presented, and delicious. It was easily one of the best breakfast experiences I’ve had at a boutique hotel. Highlights of the Stay • The Design: The villa’s architecture and garden layout create a very peaceful, upscale atmosphere. • The Service: The staff are incredibly attentive and genuine; they truly went out of their way to make me feel welcome and looked after. • Location: Having the beach just steps away for sunset walks was a dream. Final Verdict: If you are looking for top-tier service and a tranquil escape in Bentota, ignore the outliers. Villa Thamburu is a 5-star experience through and through. I can’t wait to return — next time with my wife and teenagers.

Die Ausstattung ist außergewöhnlich gut, sehr durchdacht und architektonisch asiatisch gestaltet mit hochwertigen Materialien. Der Service ist sehr angenehm und das Essen hervorragend. Direkter Strandzugang zu einem herrlichen und ruhigen Strand bei Bentota. Eine tolle Atmosphäre um sich wirklich zu erholen. Wir haben die Tage wirklich genossen. Der Pool ist genug für richtige Schwimmzüge. Wir hatten ein tolles Sylvesterfeuerwerk und Drinks am Meer.

Das Zimmer hat keinen richtigen Meerblick. Der Manager hat uns dafür ein Abendessen angeboten, was sehr smart war und kundenorientiert

Beautiful architecture created a serene and relaxing environment. We enjoyed the peace and tranquility and the pool area was well equipped with sun loungers and plenty of space between them. The pool was lovely and it was great watching the sunset sitting in bean bags on the beach. The menu was varied and delicious. Despite being one of the smaller rooms, we were very comfortable. The bathroom was luxurious and we enjoyed sitting in our sunny private balcony for our morning cup of tea. I gave in some laundry to the front desk shortly after we arrived early afternoon and it was returned before dinner! We’d definitely go back!

This place is just incredible. The hotel itself is absolutely stunning and the rooms are beautifully appointed. The gardens and pool are amazing and the beach is beautiful and serene, not busy at all. The service at the hotel is exceptional, all the staff were lovely and incredibly professional. The breakfast was amazing, all the food we ate at the hotel was delicious and fresh. Lovely touches like complimentary king coconuts by the pool and complimentary tea and snacks in the afternoon just added to the overall wonderful experience. I don't usually stay at this type of accommodation, but I would definitely return to Villa Thamburu and highly recommend it to anyone.

Delightful hotel, everything was absolutely outstanding. The staff were lovely and attentive. We spent our time by the pool, we had breakfast, lunch and dinner at the hotel. It was a great place to unwind. The restaurant food was so tasty, every dish we tried. We would definitely come back.

Nothing at all. We tried one of the beachside restaurants and paid a similar amount for a meal, but the food wasn’t as good as at Villa Thamburu. For the rest of our holiday, we chose to dine at the hotel.

Wundervolle Unterkunft mit erstklassigem Service! Wir haben die Villa Tumburu spontan nach dem Hochwasser als sichere Unterkunft gefunden und wurden sofort herzlich aufgenommen. Das Hotel ist elegant, durchdacht gestaltet und liegt traumhaft direkt am Meer. Die Zimmer und der Außenbereich sind wunderschön und laden zum Wohlfühlen ein. Der Service – ob am Empfang, im Restaurant oder am Pool – war durchgehend freundlich, aufmerksam und einfach hervorragend. Man fühlt sich hier wirklich wie zu Hause. Hotel und Gastronomie sind etwas teurer als anderswo, aber man bekommt erstklassigen Luxus und hohe Qualität. Das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis ist absolut gerechtfertigt. Wir können die Villa Tumburu jedem empfehlen, der Ruhe, Stil und Top-Service sucht. Gerne wieder! Liebe Grüße aus Deutschland Florian & Maria

We loved everything about this place. The location is beautiful. The hotel is gorgeous. It's a boutique hotel so there weren't many guests. It was easy to find private areas around the grounds. The beach was very empty too. The room was spectacular. So beautiful and spacious. We loved having the private pool and outdoor shower. The indoor bathroom was marvelous as well. The whole place felt very luxurious. The staff were super friendly and attentive. All the food and drinks were delicious! We were really happy to stay here and would definitely return!

One of the BEST places we stayed in Sri Lanka - this boutique hotel is new but feels very authentic - the resteraunt was amazing - apart from lovely walks on the beach we didn't leave - the pool is lovely - the staff and service were super attentive. I cannot fault this lovely place at all - perfect - would go back and stay longer ! We chose to go straight to the airport from here rather than stay in Colombo - easy 1.5 hour drive - so location is perfect too

Thank you so much to all the staff for this unforgettable stay! Everything was amazing from start to finish. Everyone was so kind, polite, and always smiling — such lovely people! All our requests (even the extra ones 😅) were taken care of with pleasure. Service at the restaurant was always top-notch — special thanks to Rohan and all the waiters for their wonderful hospitality! The hotel itself is beautiful, and the whole area is spotless. The pool was cleaned every day, just like the beach area. Our room was made up daily with fresh towels and new bedsheets — super clean! The restaurant is honestly the best we’ve been to in Sri Lanka. Breakfast (included in the stay) was made with fresh ingredients and looked amazing. We especially loved the traditional Sri Lankan dishes. Dinner felt like a celebration every night — the menu is huge, and every single dish we tried was 10/10, especially the seafood! The chef always came by to check on us and have a nice chat — such a lovely touch. We were treated incredibly well for the whole week and honestly didn’t want to leave. I highly recommend this hotel if you’re looking for exceptional service, aesthetic interiors, spotless cleanliness, and the most delicious food — you’ll truly enjoy the island to the fullest! ❤️

The only downside was that we came a bit off-season, so we couldn’t really swim in the ocean — but that’s obviously not the hotel’s fault 😅 And another “minus” — I came back home with +2 kg, because the food at the restaurant was way too good to resist 😂

For two nights we had the most wonderful time. It was so relaxing, the staff were really lovely and very attentive. We ate at the hotel quite a bit and were so impressed with the food. It honestly felt like paradise after a few busy days travelling

Wir wurden durch das sehr freundliche Personal willkommen geheißen und uns wurde die sehr stylische hochwertige Anlage vorgestellt. Die ganze Anlage war sehr sauber und schön arrangiert, den Pool konnten wir aufgrund der geringen Belegung des Hotels quasi alleine nutzen was für uns sehr angenehm war. Unser Zimmer war sauber und top modern eingerichtet. Kleines Manko: Die Minibar war leer und auf dem Balkon wäre ein zweiter Stuhl schön gewesen. Das Frühstück nach Kartenauswahl sowie die Hauptgerichte am Abend waren geschmacklich einfach köstlich. Änderungswünsche wurden, da meine Partnerin sich vegan ernährt, kreativ umgesetzt. Großes Lob an die Küchencrew. Besonderes Lob auch an den Mitarbeiter, dessen Name mir leider entfallen ist, der uns zum Flughafen brachte. Er erzählte uns sehr viel über die Geschichte Sri Lankas und die Besonderheiten des Landes ansich. Auch über die derzeitige Situation des Landes diskutierten wir was wir richtig gut fanden.

Die Lage vom Hotel. Weder Restaurants noch sonstige Unternehmungsmöglichkeiten gibt es in der Nähe was natürlich Geschmackssache ist. Uns störte dies nicht. Den Strand fanden wir nichts besonderes. Er ist recht schmal und kaum schattig zudem außerhalb des Hotelgeländes schmutzig aber da kann das Hotel ja nichts dafür. Das wir vom Personal nach unserer Meinung eigentlich schon etwas zuviel umsorgt wurden war uns schon fast peinlich. Der Gegensatz von den Lebensumstände der Singalesen und dem Luxus im Hotel machte uns schon traurig aber das soll natürlich keine Kritik ans Hotel sein. Ein Tip noch an den Küchenchef: Für Veganer gibt's kaum Angebote.

Wow what a great place to relax and enjoy your privacy. A bit away from everything but it was perfect for us... The villa was spacious and clean and it was extremely private.. lovely breakfast. The staff was very kind and attentive. The food was a bit pricey after adding all the taxes and service charge, but it was really good.

We spent our first 3 days in Sr Lanka at Villa Thamburu and it was perfect.. The Villa is beautifully designed and it felt like being in our own private villa with very attentive staff. The food was delicious. We opted for sri lankan breakfast every day which was stunning. From the villa we went to the local town for a river trip which was great.

A great 15 bedroom boutique hotel, with fantastic service and staff. The food was of a very high standard. The 3.30pm complimentary tea and snack, delivered and poured by your sunbed, was a nice touch.

Breakfast was good. Lots of fruit. (Orange juice at extra cost) Quite a variety to choose from and all professionally prepared.

A deeper pool would have been very welcome. The 1m deep pool is just for cooling off. A spa would have been nice.

The staff were so kind and caring. The chef was great! The property has a very zen feel, quiet and pared back. The small scale meant the staff knew you and it was very personal. There was a complimentary tuk tuk into Bentota, about 4 ks away.

There were no shops nearby. No spa or guests lounge for showering etc when waiting for late flights.

Excellent staff who were very friendly and helpful.

Balcony of room was too small

Hard to fault Villa Thamburu. It is a stunning location, designed by Ricardo Flores it is a gorgeous on the eye, the food is high quality and the staff are wonderful across the board.

Evenings can be a little quiet as not much to do at the hotel and a little far from town. A little pricey for Sri Lanka

Really amazing food at the restaurant, really tastefully done interiors and well thought out - your ear will ring with mellow jazz while you wash the city away in the beautiful pool opposite the beach while gulping down a cool curry leaf and lime cocktail (Neverland incase you are looking for recommendations) The room and overall service was really good. The beach is lovely. No complaints. Do NOT miss the restaurant - great cocktails, great srilankan curry, lovely homemade ice cream and panacota. Thank you Rohaan for the great service and recommendations at the restaurant.

Warm welcome with cold towels and afternoon tea. Our twin bedded room wasn’t huge but more than adequate. Comfy bed, good pillows and quality of bedding. Wonderful bathroom with bath and rainforest shower. Lovely products and strong hairdryer. The villa is perfectly situated on a wonderful sandy beach - there are some beach bars and restaurants if needed. However the food in the hotel is amazing and of similar price so to be honest I would just eat here. In addition to the fab beach there is a small swimming pool. As mentioned above the food is of top quality. Breakfast was outstanding - either Sri Lankan or continental including freshly made juices, cut fruit and a good choice of hot dishes. Coffee was the best we had in our 10 days in Sri Lanka. Both our evening meals were also faultless. Nice touch that they offer complimentary king coconut mid morning and afternoon tea All staff are very helpful but Special mention to Janaka, Sanjevee and the Executive Chef who kindly gave me a cookery lesson. Would highly recommend this very well run boutique hotel.

Absolutely perfect. Villa Thamburu is a luxury boutique hotel with 5 star service and unreal food. We spent the final 6 nights of our honeymoon here and couldn’t have been in a better place. The staff are brilliant and go above and beyond at every opportunity. The hotel itself is stunning, with beautifully designed and clean comfortable rooms. The food is divine. Everything here is done with such care and attention to detail. The atmosphere is tranquil and serene - with only 15 rooms it feels really exclusive. Would recommend for couples looking for a calm retreat.

Such a wonderful hotel. Only 15 rooms, so you get more personalised service. The staff couldn't be nicer, nothing was too much to ask. The food was delicious, we ate in the hotel restaurant every day.

There aren't many worthwhile activities in the area. Turtle hatcheries are a scam and for day tours the hotel is located quite far from the main attractions such as Colombo, Galle or the national parks. Come here if you want to relax by the pool or on the beach, enjoy the stellar service and unwind!

Room was very comfortable (included turn-own service), with a private balcony overlooking the sea. Welcome fruit-platter delivered to the room on arrival was a nice touch!

Quite pricy but you get what you pay for. Missed a room-service menu for food/drinks. Non-alcoholic drink selection only in mini-bar but assume you can order anything to the room. Don't think they offer spa treatments.

Excellent hotel with European quality level. Service, level of staff, atmosphere, everything in this hotel helps to relax and restore strength. I highly recommend it to anyone who is far from excessive authenticity, who appreciates high standards of service. This is truly a paradise in Sri Lanka.

The location on the beach was perfect. The staff from housekeeping to Manager were fabulous and couldn't do enough for us. The New Years celebrations the hotel organised were both memorable and wonderful. Special mentions to Sumilal for always making sure we had a sunbed and towel. To Sanjewa, Rohan, Janaka and the other Restaurant staff who were all so helpful and friendly. To Amal and the kitchen team, who supplied the most impressive culinary delights. To Danesh the driver for amazing day trips and guided tours and finally to Charminda and the reception staff who were always there at our beck and call - wonderful staff working at a magical hotel- Thankyou.

Our first stop in Sri Lanka and we struck gold. What an elegant and beautiful boutique hotel Thamburu is. We were so fortunate to be given the whole hotel experience with all the staff waiting on us at all times and we had the whole boutique villa to ourselves for 2 days. The food was delicious and the service was 10/10. The villa is impeccably clean and its minimalist decor stunning. Would definitely go again. We loved every moment of our time there. So relaxing.

Wow! We have just had the most incredible three nights at Villa Thamburu. The villa is perfection, the beach is stunning, it is so relaxing and we were incredibly well looked after by the friendliest staff. The food was delicious and we enjoyed lots of cocktails too! My husband and I have been lucky enough to travel widely and this has to be one of the best places we have ever stayed. Thank you so much for making our short time in Sri Lanka so magical.
