MAKAI Surf House

Really enjoyed our stay at Makai! The rooms were lovely and the double bed was massive! We really loved the location, slightly away from the hustle and bustle of central Ahangama which made it super relaxing, but also only a short walk away from all the restaurants and cafes. Staff were super friendly and helped us with transportation as well as accommodating a late check in. Definitely good value for money.

This has easily been one of the best places we stayed at in Sri Lanka. Wonderful, kind staff and owners. Perfect location, quiet but just a short walk to the centre. We loved the rooftop — so lush and perfect for observing nearby bird and wildlife activity. We cannot recommend it enough and will be back.

I had mixed feelings about my stay. On the positive side, the house is in a quiet, peaceful area surrounded by nature, which is great if you’re looking to disconnect. The café/restaurant of the house is very nice, different options to choose from and the setting feels very calm.

The property itself looks brighter and more modern in photos than in reality. My room was quite dark, and some areas (like the bathroom and common spaces) felt a bit worn. The location can be inconvenient without a scooter. It’s about a 6–7 minute walk from the main road through a dark path, so I often had to take a tuk-tuk at night to feel comfortable. Also, despite being described as a surf house, there were no social or group activities, and the place was very quiet during my stay. When I arrived, I asked if I could adjust my booking due to the location, but this wasn’t possible because of their policies, which is understandable.

Sadly I did have ants in my bed on the second night not the hostels fault as such but I honestly don’t know where they came from No ac in the dorm but you do have a personal fan at the end of your bed which saved me !! Not much of a social vibe if you are looking to socialise

Super nice finding! It's a very good place to stay - super central, nice room with everything cleaned and well mantained. Good garden with relaxin area, and also very nice Makai Cafe to eat & chill a bit. The place is super ahangama central, that is great to explore the coast. Amámos ficar no Makai. Fomos super bem recebidos e foi uma estadia super relaxante. Tudo fluiu na perfeição. O Makai está situado numa ótima localização, dá para ir a pé para todo o lado. As camas são super confortáveis e por isso vamos voltar de certeza absoluta!!

Great location and lovely spacious dorm. The owner and staff are amazing!! I had an injury and before I’d even checked in she helped me with it, and checked up the following days. Chilled atmosphere, only 10/15 minutes from restaurant and beach.

No AC so the room did get pretty hot, but there’s lots of fans to help with this. Only issue for me was that our windows were open constantly with no way to close, and with lots of mosquitos in the area we got pretty bitten!

The rooms are much simpler and less beautiful than in the pictures, but all in all I had a nice stay. The dorm had been clean, spacious and the beds had been comfortable. The room has lockers with provided keys. The shower run warm water, however the bath could have been nicer. The hostel is a little outside of the centrum, but therefore it’s quiet and for me still in a good walking distance. The stuff had been really friendly. You have access to free water.

The rooms get really hot at night and the air was not good in the room. Since you can’t fully close the windows there had been also lots of mosquitoes. The door was hard to open and therefore really loud. It would have been nice to have curtains and a little privat light, as well as a bin in the room. There was only one bathroom for six people, which could have been cleaner. No separate toilet.

Für den Preis 1a, sehr modern und sauber! Bei dem Preis muss man jetzt keine Dusche wie im 5 Sterne Hotel erwarten, aber absolut ausreichend!!

Sehr großes und sauberes Zimmer! Wir waren für eine Nacht hier. Die Lage ist auch gut, man läuft ca. 5 min vor an die Hauptstraße, den Lärm von der Straße hört man nachts nicht, wir haben sehr gut geschlafen. Die Besitzer sind auch sehr nett!

Wir hatten das große Einzelzimmer, im vergleich zu anderen Unterkünften war es ein bisschen teurer, ansonsten hat alles gepasst!

Very chill hostel with nice outside area and super friendly staff. It’s a bit from the center but that makes it nice and quiet and you can easily walk, Tuc Tuc or rent a scooter.

It was very peaceful, especially their cafe.

Facilities need some improvement. The bathroom door is not great. The door to the dorm is also not great. Be better to have AC rather than fans in the room as this can be very drying. Cleanliness can be better too in the bathroom. Not the best for the price you pay for a dorm here

Schöne Unterkunft, etwas raus aus dem Zentrum von Ahangama, dafür etwas ruhiger. Der Weg war auch im Dunkeln in Ordnung alleine als Frau, da in der Straße viele Hotels sind und immer Leute unterwegs sind. Mitten in der Nacht habe ich mir jedoch eher ein Tuktuk genommen. Das Haus ist liebevoll gestaltet und ich habe mich sehr wohl gefühlt. Jedoch war es schade dass die Yogaterrasse die auf den Bildern angepriesen wurde under construction war. Sehr nette Inhaberin und Personal war toll!

We really loved our stay here. The room is really nice and big. The hosts are such lovely people. The property is very chill and there is a lovely cafe with delicious food. The location is great as well, walking distance to a few surf spots.

The only thing that wasn’t great was the surf class I took.

I really enjoyed my stay. The restaurant was really nice too and the coffee was great. The only thing was that there were no curtains on the bunk beds to give some privacy. The hosts were really nice.

So eine schöne Unterkunft ! Ich war im Dorm Und es war schön groß und sauber ! Ein bisschen warm aber dafür hatte jedes Bett seinen eigenen Ventilator ! Es ist ruhig und hat einen schönen Außenbereich zum sitzen oder um in der Hängematte zu liegen. Nebenan ist ein dazu gehöriges Café , super für Frühstück ! Das Personal ist soooo freundlich und ich konnte dort direkt einen Scooter ausleihen. Super ! Ich wollte nur 2 Nächte bleiben , habe aber auf 4 verlängert !

Super sauberes Zimmer mit eigenem Bad. Das Personal war so freundlich, immer erreichbar und kann wahrscheinlich jeden noch so kleinen Wunsch erfüllen. Es gab kostenlos Trinkwasser und die Preise für Scooter (2000 LKR pro Tag) und Tuktuk waren echt fair. Außerdem war es toll, das nebenan gleich das eigene Café war, welches super leckeres Frühstück und Lunch anbietet.

Wirklich das einzige, was uns einfällt, ist, dass wir nur einen Stuhl auf dem Balkon hatten. Aber das ist meckern auf hohem Niveau! :)

The dorm was so hot and stuffy, absolutely no air flow, I noticed people coughing when I arrived and I’ve been coughing for a week straight since staying there. Unsure why the dorm doesn’t have air con like the other rooms? Also strange that there’s only 1 bathroom for everyone?

Tolles Anwesen, tolles Restaurant auf dem Hof, sauber und gemütlich. Ich hatte das Einzelzimmer mit sehr großer Terasse und habe spontan 2 Nächte verlängern können. Extrem freundliches und hilfsbereites Personal.

Echt een fijne plek, waar je lekker kan chillen en je welkom voelt! Ik heb 1 nacht in de dorm geslapen, wat gewoon prima was. En 3 nachten in een prive kamer, super fijn! Zo fijn dat we hadden bijgeboekt. Het ligt op een rustige locatie, maar wel loopafstand van het centrum. Echt meeeega lief personeel

Das Personal war super freundlich und herzlich. Das Essen in dem Restaurant war sehr lecker und die Location dort lädt zum chillen und relaxen ein :) Zu Fuß kann man gut die Cafés, Restaurants und Geschäfte erreichen :)

Beautiful property tucked in a calm and green area surrounded by nature and animals sounds (monkeys and peacocks!). Good location, easy walk into the town and a cheap tuktuk back and forth. The room was super clean, spacious, and one of the nicest ones I've stayed in (no ants - big perk), free fresh water, clean towels, and nice and clean kitchen. For the shower, there was decent hot water. Good wifi inside and outside. As a solo traveller, the shared spaces were great to just have an ambience around and I felt really safe - there's a gate and friendly guard that watches the property so I felt comfortable coming back home late which I don't always in other countries. The staff and owners were so kind and welcoming, they make you feel right at home and help you with whatever you need. They've helped to connect me to an airport shuttle, their neighbor's trustworthy tuktuk ( I ended up using him throughout my stay, even when I left Makai) and they always had a spare umbrella I could borrow! The outdoor cafe was my favorite part, it was so nice to walk out and have a nice atmosphere to eat, read a book or work on my laptop. Also the food was delicious!

The accommodation was absolutely great. The room was cozy, comfortable and clean. But the biggest thanks go to the owner, who was very friendly, smiling and helped us with everything and accommodated us. The outdoor seating is also worth mentioning, which was very pleasant. The whole place has a magical atmosphere led by its owner and her family. I highly recommend it to everyone and I hope we will come back soon!

El personal es amable y las instalaciones y habitación están muy bien.

El baño no está al nivel de la habitación. La ubicación tampoco nos resultó tan cómoda, ya que durante nuestra estancia estaban asfaltando la calle y el acceso fue algo difícil. Además, no queda tan cerca del centro para ir caminando, aunque por lo demás está muy bien.

I had a wonderful stay at this lovely hostel in Ahangama. Since it was low season, I had the dorm all to myself — the room and all the common areas are super cosy. It’s the perfect place to relax in the evening, whether in the hammocks or the little outdoor lounge. The family who runs the place is really kind and always happy to help if needed. Having a kitchen with a fridge was definitely a great bonus. The area around the hostel is calm and peaceful, a nice escape from the busy town centre, but still easily accessible on foot. A truly great discovery — highly recommended!

I really enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere at Makai, surrounded by lush greenery. It's tucked away from the centre of Ahangama, offering a quiet escape, yet still within walking distance of shops, cafes, and just a short stroll to the beach at the end of the street. Tuk tuks were also easy to catch when needed. I stayed in the standard double room, which was simple but pleasant. With both a fan and AC, it was comfortable for sleeping, though the power was out for a day during my stay (the staff mentioned this happens occasionally in the area). There was filtered water available and plenty of relaxing outdoor spaces to unwind. I also appreciated the notice board with local recommendations and their fantastic guide to the area, it was super helpful for exploring Ahangama and beyond. Staff were also really helpful in arranging my airport transfer, even with a late-night arrival around midnight. Excellent service all around!

Throughout the night a bang would go off maybe 3-4 times. I’m not sure if this was the guests/staff slamming a door or the pipes, but it woke me up each time. Also, as the listing description states they have an on site restaurant and yoga classes, this was my expectation. However unfortunately, these services were not available during my stay (in May) due to the off-season, which wasn’t mentioned at the time of booking. I felt a bit disappointed as these were part of the overall experience I was looking forward to and factored into the price I paid. I completely understand that some services may vary seasonally, but I’d kindly suggest updating the listing or notifying guests in advance, so expectations are aligned.

We had an amazing stay at the Makai surf house! The room was spacious with a private bathroom, felt very clean and was nicely air conditioned. The staff were exceptional, so friendly and helpful. We rented motorbikes and they gave us good guidance on what to do in the area. The location is super peaceful and away from the hustle of Ahangama, so probably best to have a motorbike (although we also walked to the beach & cafes).

Makai Surf House was a great spot in Ahangama. The room was super comfortable and great value for money. Would highly recommend staying here!

The location is perfect — close to the main road and the beach, but far enough to be quiet at night. My room was spacious and had an amazing private balcony facing the jungle. The atmosphere was chill yet stylish. They recently opened a café, which is very cute. The food and drinks are delicious, and the lady who works there is absolutely lovely. There are so many good restaurants close by. The staff was helpful and arranged transportation for me.
