On arriving at the Headland Lodge, I was surprised it was on flat land. I had the idea in my head it was up on a hill with a Seaview. Once I got over that odd assumption, we were greeted by our lovely hostess. The building used to be the local hotel, now transformed into a welcoming Lodge, with a homely feel. Exceptionally clean. Great to have an ensuite. The shared kitchen was huge. We took our own food and were the only guests in the kitchen. Log fire was soon roaring and we turned the TV to the Chanel we wanted. Wonderful place for groups to stay or to have a private function. Heaps of private parking. Highly recommend.
NOTHING.
The manager was super accommodating.we arrive early for check in ,she still entertained us .

Very quiet, and relaxing. Woodburning fire in this chilly weather was lovely and warm.
We loved that it was close to home, IT was good to see my whanau in the village 🥰 & supporting our local business 💯💙💛 Muriwai Gold oh and having a space to chill away from home... The Lodge caters for your needs, it's the simplicity Lifestyle we ❤️
Logging Trucks 😆
The room was clean and tidy, communal areas were clean and tidy. I was given a little tour arround and my all my questions were answered politely. Manager/owner was lovely and very helpful.
Everything was great.
It’s a perfect place. Very peaceful and with plenty to do: chess, ping pong, puzzles… Furthermore, Tarquin, the manager, is very friendly and always willing to help.
Everything was perfect :)
This is an exceptional place. A 60s retro motel, but in a really good way. Everything is clean tidy and works. A piece of NZ history but also very comfortable with really friendly owner.
Nothing. It was awesome.
Very clean and Manager very welcoming
Nothing
Clean. Professional and friendly staff. Good communal facilities. Decor charmingly dated if a little minimal.
Bed very suseptible to partner disturbance, felt seasick, bed seemed to undulate !! Noisy location, right on main road. Would have liked another pillow!
For self catering accommodation the kitchen and dining facilities were excellent. The standard of cleanliness the best we have experienced in 10 years of using this type of accommodation in NZ Our hostess was cheerful and helpful.
Lovely facilities for the location.
Friendly host the place was super clean and the shared kitchen was very well equipped with everything that you need. There was a pool table and a table tennis table for your enjoyment. Great stay.
Cosy everything is supplier very quiet great host
Bed was squeaky
Clean and comfortable renovated old hotel, great facilities and friendly helpful host.
Insect screens on bedroom windows would be helpful. Main light was very bright, hence insects were attracted inside. A bedside lamp would be good.
The headland lodge was amazing. The host was very welcoming and happy to help with all your needs. Set in an ideal location just out of town it was quiet and peaceful. The lodge had amazing facilities with pool tables, darts and table tennis to keep you entertained. The rooms were also very comfortable. Highly recommend a stay at the headland lodge.
Lovely greeting on arrival and lovely surroundings.
Can handle not having a TV but it would have made my stay so much nicer if we could have had bedside lamps to read by. No towel rails in the bathroom only hooks on the back door.
cosy and stylish, well equiped shared kitchen, friendly staff
Great lounge room with pool table
Cost, locality to Marae
Beds were a bit sqeaky and hard
The manager was very friendly and helpful. The room was spacious and comfortable. There was a washing machine available for use. There is a section with games like pool, ping pong, and more.
Everything. Lovely host lady very welcoming accommodating, loved my Room ensuite, the lodge had all kitchen laundry facilities games room. I would stay again. Good value for your money too

Everything was convenient for our stay, due to our circumstances of our travel to this location ❤️ Truly Appreciated our stay...
The room
The creaky floor
Nobody was there so run of the place to ourselves. Lovely host, big and well stocked shared spaces.
No TV or shower complementaries in room.
The place is very clean and tidy. Location is not that far from the city centre.
Need more lights on the parking area.
I enjoyed our stay the night, hostess Tarquin was very warm and welcoming. even made us a cake for cuppa. Ideal stay out in Muriwai or travelling through Gizzy. Loved the games room and their garden seating area where you can see the beautiful stars glistening in the openness of the sky. Perfect for families friends passing through couple nights.
Location wad perfect middlw of nowhere away from town. Owners are lovely and amazing people
We loved our night at The Headland. Lovely service from the lady who runs it (and she even gave us some delicious cake). Check in was super easy. The beds were comfortable and warm. The property is as described - it's about a 25 minute drive from Gisborne town, but it's a pretty drive. We loved the retro vibe in the lounge with 60's style couches and chairs! I much preferred staying here to when we staying in town where we could hear the noise from logging trucks all night.
Clean place
Not much
Really lovely staff, felt like a home away from home, more then a motel, lovely vibe and friendly staff who made sure you knew what you needed to and explained everything very well as supplied a note with the information to look back on later.
Clean and tidy Good value for money
I had my own breakfast and it was good. A Clean well stocked kitchen.
Cleanliness
The Headland Lodge is located on the highway so was a breeze for us to find. We were greeted by the Manager, Tarquin, who couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. We had called earlier to ask if checking in earlier was ok, as one of our friends wasn't feeling well. Tarquin was very understanding and said that would not be a problem. Our rooms were very neat and clean and also very comfortable. We were very happy to have access to the communal kitchen to be able to prepare our dinner and then breakfast the following morning. The kitchen was very clean and well equipped.
The lodge had all the facilities immaculate, even though they were shared. Pool and table tennis ,
Need a small TV in room plus a small fridge and even a microwave would make it more attractive . I understand that it is a newly renovated facility and it has the potential to grow into a very popular accommodation lodge. immaculate and clean .Could not log on to wifi .
The comfort of the place and access to facilities.
How far away the motel was from main town (Gisborne).
Cool little lodge, friendly staff, very comfy and a super big kitchen. Bathrooms are clean, rooms are fine
Breakfast not applicable- Had the lodge to ourselves, good kitchen facilities, very clean , pleasant manager,
Too far out of Gisborne- no one there when we arrived - place seemed to be deserted:

Good size bedroom adequate en suite. Well appointed communal kitchen. Games room. Friendly staff
A wee bit further out of town than we expected. No food available.
Travel back in time to an authentic motorway lodge. The furnishings are from the 70s and exceptionally kept. If you want to experience a retro motorway motel that has been well maintained this is it. A massive kitchen that's fully functional that you can do your own meal prep. A lovely games room with a darts board, pool table, board games and a puzzle still waiting to be completed. Was a lovely touch that the owner's daughter checked in on us and had a bit of a yarn. Good sized room that was spotless and a good shower.
The bed was a bit springy but that's grasping at straws
Freedom of the use of the facilities. Cool location, lots to do inside with the pool table, darts and table tennis. The hosts were super friendly and made us feel at home. Grateful to them for letting our kids spend the day with us before they headed back to R&V.
Loved the Location so quiet and peaceful. The hospitality given was amazing. All the amenities was so on point, excellent to be exact. The pool table, darts, table tennis plus many more oh my gosh outstanding. I would not hesitate to recommend Headlands Lodge to anyone. My husband and I loved every moment of our stay. Excellent just so outstanding, Thank you Headlands Lodge
There was nothing to dislike it was perfect
The staff were great. Very welcoming and accommodating.
Can't think of anything.
The staff member on duty for my stay was so friendly and helpful, she gave me lots of tips for the local area. Super comfy bed and room, and very clean toilet/shower facilities. The kitchen and shared spaces were also really well kept. Everything about my stay was charming and enjoyable.
Good lighting for reading
Nice and Clean 💯Peaceful lovely and Quiet nice facilities pool table outside drinking area manager is a sweet girl even made yogurt buns for guest very nice welcoming hosting.
The host is extremely friendly, she is nice and patient. The lodge is tidy and clean and the kitchen is fully equipped. The wifi signal is strong everywhere. The shower is nicely warm.
Good location, quiet and beautiful place
The price could be lower
Great kitchen facility and good place to hunker down in the storm.
A comfier bed, but honestly it was a lovely stay. Great find and will be back 😃
Loved the big fluffy towels ❤️ Very nice host as well 🤗
Large quiet property with well equipped shared kitchen. Very friendly staff.
The staff, they Went out of their way to help when needed

Located on the outskirts of Gisborne. Very comfortable room. There's a large communal kitchen, dining room and games room. We enjoyed playing pool and table tennis.
Nothing.
Clean, comfortable with a great kitchen as well as access to a washing machine.
Little bit far from town but great facility with excellent host
peaceful, relaxing, good facilities, Tarquin was a really friendly welcoming host, there's a nice short 2min walk up the hill behind the lodge excellent view of the ocean and poverty bay flats, good for sunrise n sunset piks
Tarquin was very lovely to talk to and made our stay extremely hospitable. We certainly got our moneys worth using the darts board, pool table, table tennis table and a game of chess! Will certainly recommend if you’re on the way to Gisborne
Nothing. Everything was great
Excellent facilities to self-cater. Clean with TV and games. Comfy bed. Easy to find. Parking next to building. Friendly helpful welcome. Easy access and instructions. Affordable. Very quiet - we were the only guests that night.
Hot water didn’t seem to be working in our ensuite room, so we used the communal shower which was fine. It’s only 20km from Gisborne so easy if you have a car but not close to any sights to see or walks.
Host was really friendly for checking in, and facilities was kept clean

The manager was very welcoming (even at our very short notice) and explained everything we needed to a tee. Property was awesome

Very friendly receptionist. I answered NO when she asked me "Will you cook?" but I could buy something in Gisbone, which is just a 10-minute or so drive, and make an easy cook to have a happy dinner. Everything was ready to do so there, thank you.
Minor errors were that there was no hot water in the shower and the Wi-Fi was weak and disconnected every five minutes. It's OK if not for business use. I just expected too much at the place where my iPhone didn't catch good data.
Friendly. Good value
We were biking the rail trail 3 minutes down the road, so the place was perfect, and our host was lovely. She had the fire roaring, and the lovely high kitchen for us to cook in was brilliant . Very quiet and peaceful.
The massive common spaces. Beautiful views. Tarquin is sooo friendly and knowledgeable! The old piano is fun to play. There are board games and great walks nearby.
The road noise. And the piano needs some TLC
