Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Prashan is the best host! The entire experience was a 20/10. The resort is a little off the beaten track but when you arrive it is well worth it. It's right on the river, very quiet. The dinner was amazing. Seriously the most romantic experience ever. I will never forget the dinner. He arranged the Safari and everything for us. I can write a book about how much we enjoyed our stay.
Nothing, it was perfect
De rustige omgeving, vlak naast de rivier!
Eigenlijk niets
Very beautiful and peaceful spot by the river. Lovely meal spot! As a solo female traveller I felt safe and comfortable! Prashan, the host is friendly and welcoming. I enjoyed the cooking class and cooked up a feast! Also went on the safari organised and have no complaints - saw lots of elephants! Good AC. Wifi wasn’t working the first night (host acknowledged - then worked perfectly the next day). Data worked for me by the river too. I’d definitely recommend staying at least one night and doing the cooking class in the evening then the safari the following morning. 😊
If staying beyond one night, there is not so much to do during the day due to remoteness beyond the set offered activities (besides read a book and relax). However, the host offered transport to kayaking or the elephant transit home as optional activities too. I was happy to relax!
The only reason why I did not give 1 star is the owner. A very nice person who at least made sure I got a tuktuk at 23:30 and did not make me pay for it.
There was a huge swarm of winged termites (alates) in the room. Bugs can be expected in nature, a couple of bugs (like 10/20) are perfectly acceptable. Not entire swarms. Same thing with the house next door, where a couple of german girls where staying. They also left the premises. Adding now that before I even finished my review the owner sent me an angry message saying "my shit review is nonsense" and "as a dutch woman be genuine". As a Dutch woman I AM genuine and will not lie in my review. He could have bothered to turn on a light before giving the all clear on the room, he did not. And sending me an angry message is not helping.
Nothing
This charming and wonderful cottage is located in a nature lover’s paradise! next to the river and full of wild birds and so peaceful!
nothing!
This place is a little paradise by the river – peaceful, very green, and surrounded by nature. We saw peacocks in the fields and many colorful birds like parrots, and Udawalawe National Park is very close (we even saw elephants by the road). The host was extremely welcoming and helped organize great trips to nearby temples and the elephant orphanage, as well as a taxi to our next destination. The rooms were spacious, clean, with fans, air conditioning, and hot water in the bathroom, which is not always obvious in Sri Lanka. Breakfasts were excellent and there was always plenty of delicious food, and eating meals by the river created a wonderful atmosphere (just bring mosquito repellent for dinner). Thanks to the host we also learned a lot about Sri Lanka’s recent history and had a really memorable stay.
Prashan was an amazing host, the safari and cooking class are a must if you are staying here. The property is serene and peaceful, room was clean and spacious.
Nothing
Les repas était bon. Personnel gentil.
We had such an amazing stay here and can 100% recommend this place. The location is truly something special – right in the middle of nature, surrounded by greenery and close to the river. It feels peaceful, remote, and authentic. The property itself is really beautiful and has a very cool, unique atmosphere. The house had everything we needed, and everything was clean and well prepared. A special mention has to go to the shower – warm water, great water pressure, and honestly one of the best showers we had during our trip! What made this stay unforgettable, though, was the host and his family. They are incredibly warm and caring people. From the moment we arrived, he took such good care of us and made sure we didn’t have to worry about anything. In the evening, we cooked together and shared an amazing multi-course dinner. Sitting together, talking, laughing, and enjoying the food felt so authentic and special. It wasn’t just accommodation – it was a real cultural experience. He also organized our safari for the next day and even drove us to our next destination. Everything was perfectly arranged, and we truly felt welcomed and looked after the entire time. This was more than just a stay – it was a genuine encounter with wonderful people. We would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic and heartfelt experience. Thank you again for everything! 🤍✨
A wonderful stay in the jungle! Felt extremely safe as a solo traveller. Prashan was the most generous, friendly host - don’t skip his cooking class! He’s an amazing cook. Genuinely the most delicious meal from my 6 weeks in Sri Lanka. We shared many stories of our different cultures over dinner. The room was also super comfortable, modern and spotless. Wouldn’t hesitate to book again :)
Prashan is a good host. He arranged a safari for us and provided us with a wonderful cooking class. He was so accommodating with our different requests—start earlier, no wheat, vegetarian, can we make our own masala chai! The room was clean.
The 1.3 km drive to the property was difficult in our low clearance vehicle. The A/C took a long time to cool the room. The Wi-Fi needed to be stronger. Too much buffering while trying to stream video.
Calm and peaceful The owner kindness The river The dinner with the fire The sugar cane The birds and animals around
Nothing
The River Paradise is a truely magical place which fully lives up to its name. Its located in the middle of nothing, with some farmland around and is right next to a river. The place offers total peace. Prashan is an outstanding Host. He is very helpful and makes sure your stay is amazing. He organized 2 Safaris and some extra trips for us. He also took care of transport to and from the place at a very fair price. He also offers some cooking class in the evening, lunch and breakfast if you like. The acomodation is simple and VERY fair priced. You can see quite some wildlife (lots of birds) right from your hut. Its a unique place in a beautiful spot of nature.
It’s a beautiful tranquil setting and the host was wonderful and very welcoming .
Nothing
I really enjoyed my stay at River Paradise Safari House, the room was nice and the location was relaxing. The food we cooked was great as well.
Staff was very friendly and helped us a lot Really amazing help to prepare our commuting for Ella Meal portions are huge and tasty
A bit overpriced
All good
Super staff. Great location, good food , friendly owner, he arranged a safari and cooking class for us
Prashan was possibly our best host in Sri Lanka (and believe me we’ve had good ones). We did a great cooking class with him and he helped us get ready for the safari next morning. It was only one night but the meal we had after cooking was the most memorable meal of the holiday.
Nichts
Amazing stay. Really good room with two beds, AC and a good bathroom. Prashan really made it special, arranging all our transport, food and activities for reasonable prices. The cooking class was excellent and so was the Kottu and Masala Tea. He organised our safari and the driver was great. A really peaceful location - I could have stayed longer
It's very remote and in nature so expect bugs and you're not close to a shop. But that's what makes it special.
Prachtige rustige locatie. Erg gezellig!
Posizione, accoglienza, organizzazione top! Cena e colazione buonissime!
Struttura basic , da migliorare la manutenzione
We had a wonderful stay near Udawalawe national park. We stayed two nights and Prashan was the kindest host we could imagine. From organizing the safari tour for us to a private cooking class, he did everything to make it the best possible stay for us. We really appreciated the time he took and made us feel more like friends visiting than as guests.
This place is magical, and the owner is extremely kind. We did the cooking class, and I highly recommend it.. the food was amazing. Just be aware that there is nothing around; it’s very isolated, so you’ll mainly spend your time there. Overall, we loved it.
Prashan!
Niks alles was top!
A beautiful little oasis on the river, surrounded by sugar cane fields. Prashan went above and beyond to make our stay fabulous. All the food was sensational and the whole family enjoyed the cooking class. We loved eating outdoors around the fire. The safari was also amazing!
The cottage is in a beautiful and secluded garden by the river. At night you sit out under the stars, during the day in the shade of big palm trees. All you can hear are the different birds, and a breeze through the palm leaves. Bliss! Prashan is a great host, he made sure we had everything we needed. He is also an amazing cook and it was really lovely to learn how to make different dishes and have dinner together and chat. We booked the half day safari through Prashan and we had a great experience, seeing many animals including around 20 elephants.
As you’re in a tropical forest, you can expect a few bugs around. Just make sure to cover yourself in mosquito spray and you’ll be fine. We loved our authentic experience here compared to staying in a hotel.
Everything about the stay was lovely. Prashan took so much good care of us and helped us with every need we had. The cooking class with him was a wonderful experience and we had a great safari organized by Prashan. The place is quite remote and quiet, which is good for relaxing. It’s next to the river, which is great for swimming.
nothing everything was perfect
Prashan was an excellent host and his cottage was the perfect base for our couple of days enjoying Udawalawe. The cooking class was one of the best meals of our holiday and an experience by itself. He also helped us organise a safari in the national park where we saw many different animals. We would absolutely recommend!
Gar nichts.
Fantastic location with a great set up. Prashan was an amazing host who looked after us incredibly well. The cooking class was brilliant, the food was amazing…and plentiful! A really great experience!!
Nothing - it was a real gem
Beautiful location on the river. Prashan was so accommodating and the cooking class was amazing. Delicious breakfast. We loved our stay here!
Preshan was an absolute delight!! He was attentive, great I. WhatsApp and arranged everything we needed. He was really knowledgeable about the local area and the cooking class was fantastic - there was so much food but it was all delicious! The best food we had in Sri Lanka. We did a safari organised by him and it was seamless and so easy. Absolutely would recommend.
Prashan is a truly exceptional host, so kind and thoughtful. Everything is done with care, from the cozy fire in the evening to the delicious food by the water. It felt like a little paradise and was honestly the highlight of our trip to Sri Lanka. The food was so incredible, we could come back just for that! The place combines with hospitality and the food will truly be missed. The great extra bonus was the safari tour orgazined here, perfect not following all the other jeep, smooth driving for the kid and exceptional wild view. Thank you for everything, Prashan, we can’t wait to come back! 🙏
Loved swimming in the lake (we saw water monitor lizards!) and watching all the birds in the garden. Cooking class was lots of fun and the food was fantastic. Great dinner set-up.
Our driver found it hard to find, but that might’ve just been him?
Ontzettend aardige behulpzame host prashan. Leuke en lekkere cookingclass. Aanrader. Daar nog gegeten, geweldig. Safari erg mooi
Excellent place. The cooking class is interesting and talking to Prashan was very nice. He was also very helpful in organizing the safari in Udawalawe park and our drive to our next destination.
Nothing to say here.
Our host Prashan was exceptional. Such a lovely man with interesting stories and a gentle manner. He organised our safari, cooked us food and created a relaxing stay. His mother Deppa, was just gorgeous and generously shared her cooking knowledge with us.
The property was slightly outside the main hub of Uda Walawe, so once at the property this did limit some options.
Great place It’s very rural set on a river and accomodation is simple ( there may be bugs in your room just so you know) The family go above and beyond though with small touches that make this place great Breakfast by the river Dinner by fire Easy access to safari
The host family are really warm hearted people. We had amazing food and really good time. They were always make sure we are okay or if we need anything. We went on a safari what they arranged for us , they helped with the transportation for our next stop and even more. The cooking class was an amazing experience and the dinner after with fire will be a really nice memory. Thank you for everything ☺️
Nothing
good water pressure and heat. Cooking class is fun. We learned a lot. Dinner with bonfire under the stars is just wonderful. Breakfast by the river is also nice and relaxing. The host Prashan provided everything we needed. The safari trip was so much fun.
We liked everything!!! As soon as we arrived Prashan (the host) offered us drinks and lunch which he prepared for us to have by the lake with a gorgeous view (photo attached). We had a really lovely afternoon relaxing in the hammock and on the veranda before it started raining (monsoon season!) so we did the same thing just inside the beautifully clean cottage instead. Prashan brought us over an umbrella so we didn’t get wet walking the 25 metres to the kitchen where we rustled up a storm. It was a great cooking class which we couldn’t believe was included in the price given it was 2 hours and the cost of the night was only £15 for 3 of us (the food itself costs 2,500 rupees extra each)🤯 we learned about Sri Lankan food and cooking styles and then sat down and ate with Prashan and it tasted amazing!! Plus there was soo much food, we felt bad that we couldn’t finish it all. We were then taken on a walking safari where we saw lots of different plants and a few animals. Breakfast was great and again, so much food we were stuffed!! All in all, the highlight of our tour around Sri Lanka. Such a special, tranquil and unique experience that we’re so glad we stumbled across. Incredible value for money and there is also the opportunity to swim in the river and go on a safari too which we sadly didn’t get a chance to do. Prashan clearly pours his heart into the business and we had an absolutely amazing time - thank you!
Absolutely nothing!! Just incredible!! We told Prashan he needs to start charging more haha. The only hiccup we did have was when the taxi we arrived in couldn’t quite make it to the property due to the dirt track being a bit too bumpy but Prashan didn’t hesitate to call his friend with a Jeep who kindly took us the last 200 metres!
I stayed one night here in order to visit the safari, which Prashan helpfully organised! He is very kind & helpful, good communication before I arrived. The location is very rural, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing just something to keep in mind when booking. You are in the forest so expect bugs and some wildlife! The bed was clean & good air con.
It was an amazing experience! We loved it and would stay longer if possible 🙏✨
Prashan was amazingly helpful and the cooking class was fantastic, we had a feast. We had a fabulous breakfast by the river in the morning.
Unfortunately, we had a very bad monsoon night and the power cut out. Prashan worked tirelessly to fix this, but sadly wasn't able to and we had to cut our stay from 2 nights to 1. Prashan still gave us the cooking class, with lanterns lighting up the area, alongside beautiful fireflies. The following morning he did not expect any payment, and was so helpful in getting us to a new place. The main issue was no air con, due to the power cut.
What a lovely little cottage by the river 🌟💗- I would highly recommend if you want a little rest before and after visiting The Udawalawe National Park. What is there not to love about this place! 🥘- We had a cooking class with Prashan and then ate under the stars alongside candle lanterns and a campfire. All food was handmade throughout our stay and was absolutely delicious. Could not fault. 🧺- We had a delicious picnic arranged in Udawalawe National Park including tables and chairs. Fresh fruit, tea, coffee, juice, sausages, sandwiches.. the list goes on. Super lovely touch. Ps the park isn’t far at all so location is ideal! 🏊- We swam in the river by the cottage. Perfect for cooling down in the sun. ✨- We went on a night walk together to find critters and wildlife fast asleep. 🏠- The cottage’s are well equipped and have everything you need. A perfect spot surrounded by nature and sugar cane fields. Hot water, a kettle, air con, fan and a hairdryer - nothing else required 🌟 🐘- Prashan also organised the Safari for us. He went above and beyond. Prashan is a fantastic host - thank you for your hospitality 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Everything was great herę, location just at the river where you can swim and relax, very nice and clean bungalow, super friendly host and amazing cooking classes. We loved our stary there, our kids were very sad that we arę leaving.
We are a family who travel a lot and this is probably one of the best places we have ever stayed. Everything was amazing from the beautiful huts in the jungle, to the comfortable beds, it was very clean, the river next to us was great for splashing around with the kids, the host Prashan was so thoughtful and the cooking classes were really fun and interesting, not to mention how delicious the food was. We didn’t do the safari through the accommodation as we had already booked our safari but the other guests seemed very happy and impressed with it. Our last night there we ate dinner under the stars by the fire and watched the fireflies dancing in the trees and grass surrounding us. It was absolutely magical!
Cute little cottage along the river. The host made every effort to provide a full experience, starting with a bonfire and dinner in the evening, provided lunch during our trip to the park, a riverside breakfast, and excellent cooking class. The food was delicious and the service was outstanding. He was also able to help us with answers to all of our questions and set up the trip to the park with no problems. The property is conveniently located close to the entry to Udawalewe and the Elephant Transit home.
The cleanliness in the room needs a little work. The floors were a bit dirty, as evidenced by a lot of dead bugs, plus an abundance of living ants. Though we enjoyed the fact this property is off the beaten path, guests should be aware it is difficult to find.
A peaceful escape in luscious surroundings. Our lodge was super comfortable with the softest sheets, by the river, awoken by the birds. Prashan set up this business 7 months ago and his calm persona made us feel instantly at ease. He helped arrange the best full day tour ever of Udawalawe whilst providing the most scrumptious feast. He also taught us to make sambal and rotis. We were so sad to leave and I definitely hope to return.
Nothing to fault.
Wow, 5-star service! He takes such good care of guests, so friendly and helpful, and also a wonderful cook. The place is very peaceful, I stayed 3 days. There are two stand-alone huts that are brand new, even the AC units are new, bed was comfortable.
An absolute gem of a stay, a wonderful host in a really peaceful setting. The cooking class was fantastic and Prashan is a wonderful cook, he even set us up a table under the stars with our own fire (just to note the cooking class may be free but you do pay for the food 3000pp) but it's still well worth it!!
Greta location near the river and just 5 minutes to the park entrance. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Owner always willing to help and an excellent cook.
Nothing
Prashan is a super nice host and an interesting person to talk to. He showed us his garden and the village nearby. The food was really good too. A calm and quiet place to stay at. Very close to the national park. Would definitely recommend. Very special experience.
–
The property is very simple – built only a few years ago, nothing flashy, but extremely clean and comfortable. Only two little bungalows on the property, so it’s very quiet and gentle. But by far the most special thing about the place is Prashan, the host. He is skilled and attentive and interesting. He is gentle and quiet, but very happy to chat if you want to learn more about Sri Lankan economics history, politics, nature and cooking! Prashan arranged an excellent safari guide at a very fair price, with tasty breakfast picnic. We saw so many birds, elephants… and golden jackal and mongoose and crocodile. Our driver did not harass the animals by getting too close, and we were not in “jeep jams”. It was excellent. There is also a river just behind the bungalows, good for a swim. We had a wonderful cooking class, too. And a short night walk in the forest, admiring abundant fireflies and local flora. A clean, simple property and amazing host. Relaxing and quiet but with plenty to do. Highly recommended! (But not the right place for people looking for flashy five star experience.)
The bungalows have air-conditioning and a fan, which is great. But sometimes the AC cuts out when there are power cuts.
The place where you come face to face with Sri Lanka's breathtaking nature. Dear Prashan, many thanks for your hospitality.
Prashan is the perfect host, he made our stay really special. He organized a safari for us which was awesome - he prepared a breakfast for us that we took to the national park :) every evening, we cooked together and Prashan showed us around in his garden. All the ingredients we had for dinner come from his garden and he really made an effort to create a cozy atmosphere. We had dinner close to a fire pit and breakfast close to the river. Prashan is committed to support his community and teaches young children to speak English. We learned a lot about Sri Lankan cuisine from him and had eight different curries in two nights! We even cooked Kottu Roti together. The homestay is really close to Udawalawe national park, we would always come back and can recommend Prashan to everyone who wants to have a memorable stay in their journey 🐘🫶🏻
Everything was perfect! Sometimes, the electricity might not work (as in many other parts of Sri Lanka, so make sure to have a power bank with you :) )
It is a very nice and quiet location, secluded in the greenery, by the water. You can even swim there. And in the evening the night lanterns are super cosy. Prashan is super friendly and helpful. He goes out of his way to make your stay as comfortable as possible. He also cooks very delicious food. Helping in the kitchen and the night hike were a very nice extra. We saw chameleons! We can recommend this place 100%!
Not really a downside (on the contrary) but this place is a bit remote.
This was highlighted in our tour. Everything was good and they arranged all better than we expected . Outdoors shower on the rock , food finding lesson and night walk made us happy. We swam in the cannel. Room was clean . Food was delicious and we had dinner with fire.
We had great time with them, It was very funny and warmly welcomed us with a hot tea and then we had a small lunch in the afternoon. In evening we walked in the garden and picked some vegetables and fruits. We picked some delicious oranges. We had the dinner with a bonfire .The dinner was lit with oil lamps all around for a very beautiful and unforgettable moment with bonfires. After dinner, we walked outside with host and saw some animals. host is very friendly and kindly . We could discuss everything we had to all about curiosity we hve to know.We enjoyed our meal under the sky full of hundreds of stars. We had safari early in the morning before we leave we had tea and coffee. there are so calm and peaceful .The room was very clean and we had both attached bathroom and outdoor shower. Shower on the rock was amazing .Safari was good too. They gave us a take away breakfast along with cool towels ,water bottles and lot of fruits in the jeep. In the afternoon we didn't feel too tired and the jeep was very comfortable. Our tour guide worked very hard to show us all the animals and told us about them. The breakfast we had inside of the forest and had some soft drinks wich gave from the hotel. We booked a taxi with the hotel the day before we left and go back to Mirissa. The prices was very fair! A place to recommend!
