Fantastic spacious 1bedroom apartment with stunning views and beautiful gardens
Nothing
I had asked for a bottle of bubbley as a special request for my friends birthday and was told this wouldnt be a problem. Staff said no and then failed to deal with it. I had to keep asking before being handed 4 drinks vouchers for 175mm of a wine. Which was then put into tiny glasses. The apartment smelled bad and 2 of the 3 showers didnt work. It was also unclean. The drinks at the bar were horrendously over priced. The staff wasted my time.
Andrew on reception was very helpful
DO NOT Book self catering apartments, arrived for a 5 night stay. The photos speak for themselves ! Like stepping back to 1980s , the apartment had a terrible odour, was really shabby and worn out. Mould in bathroom, broken bath, worn out and dirty furniture. Smell of sewage, mixed with fried food and mould . The whole apartment was dirty and not fit to be offered as accommodation, holiday ruined . Macdonald resort Aberfoyle , you should be ashamed of yourselves !
Location for short stay was excellent
Some decor was dated
Location was beautiful, everyone was helpful snd friendly, peaceful but also lots to do
The scenery was beautiful The resort itself was lovely and clean Friendly staff
The showers and bath didnt have hot water. The en suite on the main bedroom shower was very poor and again no hot water. We was not told where to leave the used towels or where we could dispose of any rubbish. We paid for self catering and there were cloths, dishwasher tablets and an oven glove but not one tea bag on site, and being an hours drive away from a shop that wasn't extortionate was a bit disappointing. I did go to reception and they kindly gave me some bits to make a cup of tea or two after reminding me that we had only paid for self catering! This was my first time staying in a resort so I didnt know what to expect. Overall a nice stay, I would say its definitely more for couples or older people, as there wasn't much for the children to do and although they do have a swimming pool, we didnt feel comfortable as it was more for people wanting to do their lengths.
Absolutely stunning location and view from balcony
Bathrooms didn't have hot water. It was warm at best. Electric shower in the downstairs of apartment had the best water temp
Well equipped kitchen. Good views of grounds & loch. Good sized rooms. Very helpful staff Emila & Adam.
Decor & furnishing all quite dated. It would be beneficial if 3 bed apartments were accessible - as my dad did struggle with the stairs, both external & internal. The Nespresso machine did not have any capsules - but within instructions does suggest a ‘welcome pack’ . The Rafters bar & bistro decor was dated, staff were very helpful. Meals were lovely.
The only good thing about Forest Hills Resort was the location and view from balcony
The 1st self catering apartment was like something out of a 1970's care home, musty smell, mould in the bathroom, tired worn out furniture, the kitchen was worn out and about 40 years old, trip hazards on the floor, weeds growing out of the balcony, worn carpets, sofa worn and missing lighting in apartment. The kitchen was missing loads of items listed as being there. Reported it and we were moved the next day to another apartment in the same block. The 2nd apartment the furniture was atrocious, sofa worse than the first apartment and dining chairs had no faux leather left on them , coffee table had been chewed by a dog, still mould around the bath and a crack/hole in it, Kitchen was a lot better but had an induction hob with non induction frying pan? This apartment had a safe but was non secured to anything as I carried it into the living room to show my partner ( we have photographed everything ). Tennis courts ( as keen players ) were appalling and unsafe to play on. Could go on and on. At £1772.10 for 8 nights this was £221.51 a night for very poor tired unacceptable standard of self catering accommodation.
I loved the location very peaceful and green.! Went to a couple of different locations but it wasn’t like the Resorts. It was peaceful and calming what you need.
As for someone with kids stairs is a No for me carrying buggy up and down. Some sort of lift or any apparatus could have helped.
Location of the property in absolutely beautiful
It need a little bit organising for breakfast
Amazing experience and excellent facilities
the apartment was comfortable and the facilities were very good.
no welcome pack in apartment, ie tea bags etc
Location millions pound view
I didn’t like the stairs but small Price for the view Plenty of space kitchen could do with some better cooking utensils very basic
Fabulous and immaculate grounds but the apartment was tired, furniture stained and ripped and sofa had zero support. Very disappointed.
Apartment was tired and dull. Website stated continental breakfast was included but we were rudely informed that it wasn’t with the apartment.

The grounds and the views were spectacular .
The swimming was out of order for four days , the arcade was dirty with old equipment ( glasses and food wrappers left from Sunday evening ) . We went on the Wednesday just after it opened . No one ever at the bar . Our room was not ready on arrival even though it was a late 5 pm check in . In need of a refurbishment in certain areas , however our lodge was very comfortable / clean and the staff were lovely
Beautiful property in a stunning location with amazing view.
Swimming pool was out of order for nearly a week. Super disappointing. Food was great but evening meals were very expensive.
The location was beautiful.
The staff at Mc Donald Forest Hill were not welcoming at the reception desk. The staff at the Garden Restaurant had no customer service skills and were not friendly. The main restaurant was empty when we wanted to have lunch at 12 pm.however we were told it’s ‘all booked”.we had to have lunch in the lobby lounge. The pool table was very poor quality and the swimming pool was not working the length of our stay.
The lochside location is the resort's greatest strength, quiet and scenic with water and forest on the doorstep. The apartment was also genuinely spacious, with enough room for a family to spread out over several nights
The beds were the main letdown: the mattresses are old and worn, and you can feel the springs through them, so we slept badly. We also found a lot of spiders and other insects inside the apartment. And the listing photos don't match what you actually get. The view in particular was not the one advertised, which was disappointing when it's part of why we booked.
The location was great and had decent amenities
The property had checkout at 10am which was not convenient especially with checkin at 5pm. Lack of vegetarian and Vegan food options. Lack of air conditioning and no lifts. So overall it was not value for money.
Beautiful location and very kind people in general!
One of the female receptionists was unnecessarily rude.
The view so peaceful. Apartment got everything you need staff are so helpful friendly
Didnt like when its time to go home
The grounds, pool area, reastaurant.
Badly needs a revamp. Powerhosing and some paint would do wonders.
Mooie tuin en uitzicht. Fijn en heel ruim appartement. Bedden waren goed.
Meubulair is aan vervanging toe.
Everything was exelent no issue
The location is excellent, with partial views over Loch Ard and easy access to many beautiful lochs, rivers, and attractions around Stirling and the Trossachs. The apartment was spacious, offered good privacy, and the kitchen was well equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay. The presence of a private sauna was a great bonus.
Unfortunately, the resort apartment did not meet our expectations. It was not as clean as we had hoped and there were noticeable unpleasant odours. Hot water was inconsistent in some bathrooms. The furniture, beds, walls, flooring, and overall interior felt very dated and showed significant signs of wear, making the apartment feel in need of refurbishment. The presence of an old DVD player reflected how little the property appears to have been updated over the years. Lighting was also poor and insufficient. There is also no lift, which may be challenging for guests with heavy luggage or mobility concerns. Overall, we did not feel the accommodation offered good value for the price.
Amazing location! We sped a few nights in the apartments and we were very satisfied. Three bathrooms, incl.sauna and jacuzzi. Nice wide balcony with a beautiful view. Aberfoyle is nearby and a charming little town.
We couldn't find is to begin with, we continued along the river for a distance and eventually we saw the great sign in the right handsight of the road. . The apartment is in two levels and upper level had no Internet connection. The pool is with changing rooms, showers etc.
I absolutely loved my stay. We had two apartments in the red maple, each with the best views, both clean and well-equipped. The reception staff were lovely and helped us with anything we needed. We enjoyed the afternoon tea, which was quite good, and the terrace view was simply fabulous. If you’re looking to get away from it all, this is the perfect spot, just about an hour and 40 mins from Edinburgh.
A little tip: make sure to get your food from the supermarket nearby, as the restaurant closes early. there’s one about 10 mins down the road. The only downside was the internet connection, which was a bit poor, though the wifi worked most of the time. One of our apartments was on the ground floor and the other upstairs, so if you have trouble with stairs, be sure to ask for a ground-floor one. Inside the upstairs apartment, there are stairs leading to the bedrooms. Also, the road leading to the resort is a bit narrow, so keep an eye out. It’s a bit of a trek if you want to explore, so it’s best to stay in, relax, and enjoy the stunning views for a couple of nights.
Good swimming pool, jacuzzi and sauna Amazing location
In need of refurbishment - particularly the furniture which is old and tired
Loved the stunning gardens and location. The self service Kayakomat for renting Kayaks opposite the hotel was awesome. It was cleaned ok.
Appartements were very outdated. Felt like traveling 30-35 years back in time. Carpets, furniture, sofa's stained. Their was an uncomfortable smell in the appartement, probably mix of odors in all the many textiles and some funghi near the windows. The mattresses felt equilly old and felt like my back broke rather then having a relaxed wellness weekend. The odor, the heat and bad beds made me sick and stress, so was sick for the duration of our stay in the flat. This place has so so so so much potential for great holiday flats, if they are renovated.
It is isolated with stunning views. Nice swimming pool.
The facilities are old and tiered and in need of update. We had two showers in our room and one of them didn’t work.
The grounds and views from our accommodation and the hotel in general were lovely. The staff were very pleasant.
The self catering accommodation we were given needed upgrading. It was clean enough but very tired, it was so old, I don't think anything had been upgraded since the 80's! The old electric shower in the old corner bath leaked which was fixed for us but the bed was also very uncomfortable it neede replacing. The carpets were very stained. We were 2 floors up with no lift. All because we had a dog. The establishment was dog tolerant rather than dog friendly, as it was a long trip to get out of the building with the dog. For what we paid for us and our small dog I would have expected a lot better. We have been to other hotels and had much better accommodation with our dog. We were scoping this hotel out for taking our extended family on short breaks as it had a pool and wasn't too far away from home. Poor experience overall.
Clean, spacious rooms. Lovely grounds and facilities
Nothing
What a beautiful place with lovely gardens to stroll around, and a fabulous view of Loch Ard and the rolling forested hills. We stayed in a self-catering apartment which was quiet, comfortable and well equipped. It was great having access to hotel bar & restaurant, and the swimming pool facilities were excellent. The staff were super helpful too following a little hiccup with my booking.
Nothing really. Perhaps you could do more to support recycling in the accommodation (I could only find glass)
Views and staff pool
Lodge furniture very tired armchairs badly stained and torn.balcony tiles loose and trip hazard. Booked for 2 nights Thursday and Friday bar staff told us the entertainment was great on a Saturday so decided to book one more night .the on Saturday night at 8pm was told the entertainment was cancelled so a bit of a waste of money thanks
A spacious and comfortable apartment in a great location. The view from the balcony was stunning and the grounds are well maintained.
The apartment was in dire need of an update. The balcony area needed redecorating and retiling. The furnishings and kitchen fittings were old. One of the oven rack supports was broken as was the microwave turntable. We struggled to get hot water in the kitchen sink and the bathroom basins, although the shower worked satisfactorily. The bath panel was rotten. There were minimal toiletries and no tea, coffee etc or condiments. There are no lifts and the stairway and corridors are rather bleak. All this contrasted markedly with the well maintained appearance of the grounds.
Did not have breakfast but the evening meals in the restaurant were excellent . Lovely views and great service
The wi fi was an important issue unfortunately as necessary for a medical device . Lack of a bottle opener which would have been useful if we knew was not provided. Would be helpful to know exact type of shower when booking ,ie cubicle or over bath
The resort and the ambience Very scenic and quiet
The buildings could be more clean , and I should have been given both apartments in the sane block. There were no tea bags or water kept in the kitchen. For someone who comes fist tine in the evening should have a small greeting pack to start with
Locatio
Room were spacious but there was no iron or hair dryer.
Views were stunning staff very friendly And the Lodge was comfy spacious and spotless The gardens and beautifully well kept the atmosphere is so peaceful and it's overall a very relaxing place to be
Both of the restaurants where far to expensive for the quality of food served the garden room restaurant and the rafters restaurant were both fine but nothing special and the price was incredibly high and just didn't reflect what I feel it was worth Nearly £200 for two people for average unseasoned steaks and starters and deserts that were OK at best I was especially disappointed by this as I visited a few years ago and the quality of the restaurant was far better clearly a much worse chef has taken over from whoever worked there before as it was just a different caliber of food from last time when I was happy to pay the high prices because the food and service reflected that price
Lodge comfy and location of the estate were great. Spectacular view from restaurant patio
View from lodge not as expected
Staff lovely as always. Good to see rafters bar back open and live music at weekends.
Location was perfect
We think there are mice in the walls - my husband slept on the pull out bed and could hear them in the night!
Lovely apartment. Nicely furnished but some of the furniture had definitely seen better days! Amazing view. Good kitchen facilities and near the swimming pool.
Big negative was no lift and carrying luggage up 2 flights of stairs was challenging
Location and grounds.
Lodge bit dated. Local village bit run down.
Wonderful grounds with great views of Loch Awe The welcome was warm and set the tone for the visit and this carried on throughout our stay
Not the fault of the manager and his team but the wifi / internet was very poor I could understand because at home I was having trouble with Openreach too But perhaps an internet free week isn’t a bad thing
Beautiful view from the apartment onto Loch Aird. Spa was fantastic. Apartment was very spacious.
It wasn't 'didn't like' - more like 'was aware of' - the exterior, fabric and furnishings were a bit tatty. But it was comfortable.
Stunning location, with the loch view and beautiful gardens to wander in.
Service in the dining room was slow. The food, however, was excellant.
Location, view from the room, natural beauty...
Shower was cold for 2 days of our stay to find that it could have been resolved by the flick of a couple of switches. The apartment needed modernisation and smelled "old"
The hotel building, grounds, pool and facilities.
Lodge we were in was very dated and badly in needed of refurbishment. Looked like something out the 1980s.
Beautiful setting, great views from patio and apartment, dated but clean, well-appointed apartment. Good grounds for walking the dog. Plenty hot water, good showers. Kitchen adequate.
No ventilation in bedroom, no fan. Had to sleep on pull out bed where I could leave balcony door open. Restaurants food not good enough to justify high prices and wine extortionate. Best meal we had was from pub in Aberfoyle.
Location and beautiful views from our room. Staff very helpful and brought us a fan as our room was quite hot first day
Can’t think of anything
Location
A bit tired
Location and pool facilities
WiFi atrocious Sauna in the pool area useless.
The views are absolutely stunning, friendly hotel staff, great opening hours for the leisure centre.
The location
The attitude of some of the Staff, particulary the Barman in the Bistro, John and his Colleague. The fact we had no hot water for 24hrs after arriving. Having complained twice, we were moved to another room which had low water pressure. In addition to this, in our second apartment the extractor fan in the kitchen was blocked with grease and muck. The bathroom was a disgrace. After all this, the Staff in the Bistro were very unhappy because I wouldn't pay the Service Charge or leave a Tip. The Manager, Marco, really has his work cut out with some of his Staff. Sadly.
Absolutely beautiful location. Staff were wonderful, facilities excellent. Self catering apartment was really spacious and ideal for our family. Can't fault this hotel.
Beautiful location, well maintained garden grounds! There’s a lot you can do, big chess, golf, tennis, swimming, gym! Relaxing loch view!
Old curtains and sofa… Only a tiny bit of hand soap is available, you need to bring your own toiletries.
Had to deliver to the place last week through work and thought what a beautiful location, and decided to book a stay for the weekend with my partner
Property was excellent
the apartmenrs are.fantastic the space is unbelievable p
the meals
The location and views are outstanding. I enjoyed the leisure facilities. Good breakfast.
The apartment was very dated, remincesent of a retirement village.
Lovely location. Apartment was extremely clean.
It was a bit dated and you could hear music coming from another apartment. They could do with having a shop for supplies like milk, bread, cereal etc.
I asked if we could have a ground floor as my wife has problems walking, they said they had none, they said it was just first floor (15 steep steps) then another 15 steep steps to the bedrooms we are both 86 years old and I have to help her all the time. The floor boards upstairs and downstairs were very noisy with every step you took. The furniture was old and uncomfortable, the door locks and the water taps need replacing.
Great location and surroundings. Really enjoyed our family stay with kids....
Sofa bed in apartment was small and worn out
Absolutely beautiful surroundings
Bit tired
Great ambiance, very beautiful resort and spacious vintage rooms with astonishing scenic view over the Loch.
The location is beautiful
As the saying goes you can't polish a t@rd! It's so outdated and old. It's overpriced. A 330ml beer was £5.30! Lodges smell like the inside of an old football boot. Half the equipment in the kitchen missing. Pull down sofa bed was broken and about 5 foot long, not enough for an adult. Staff on reception don't care, rude and have no interest in anything.
excellent location, pool was good , staff good
road to location
The location of the property and the views are amazing. Food was really well cooked and fresh. We took our dog with us and the staff were happy to accommodate us in the bar and eating areas. My wife had a massage and facial in the spa which she really enjoyed. Plenty of space in the hotel and grounds. We stayed in one of the 2 bedroom apartments which had acres of space and a surprising sauna in the bathroom.
No real negatives about the property as a whole apart from it is a bit dated and in need of a freshen up. There are currently no EV charging facilities but they are in the process of having these installed so that’s a plus for the future.
The staff, apartment and pool facilities and gardens
Everything
Amazing staff
Everything
View
Dirty,smelly,self catering pointless pans bad
Stunning location, a room with the most wonderful view! Took our breathe away. Pool/Sauna & Steam room were fab too.
Rooms extremely dated, we did expect this as the photos showed what to expect but it also had an old smell…i think it was the carpets that gave it the fusty smell. It wasn’t awful but it wasn’t great
Return stay
Nothing
Great value for money ....wish we could afford a summer holiday with all family..scenery and nature outstanding scotland at its best
Beautiful location and gardens, the apartment was very spacious and had everything we needed for our stay. The view from the balcony of the gardens and loch were so good. Will definitely return. Use of the pool was great. The staff was very helpful when I couldn't open the locker.
Very clean, comfortable and the view was glorious.
Nothing.
The apartments we booked were quite outdated. While the location was excellent, the property itself clearly requires renovation. The dishwasher was not functioning, the TV remote was faulty and held together with duct tape, and the fridge tipped forward each time it was opened, which is a safety concern.
The property is outdated.
Perfect location and really helpful staff
Would love for rafters lounge to be open all week and for the kids games to be better maintained
Locstion was lovely ....
Rooms are dates blocked drains stuff coming up through sink because of blocked drains hot water no workin also cleaning not up 2 standard either
Very friendly and welcoming staff. Stunning location. Lovely pool. Great walks nearby.
Drinks were expensive and bar was short-staffed.
Excellent location with a beautiful view. The swimming pool was great for the kids. The apartment also had its own sauna, which was an unexpected treat!
Nothing! It was a little dated but I think that added to the charm.
