Woodland eco retreat

Very friendly couple, so welcoming and easy to communicate.

The owner was soooo friendly and the first meeting was like as we know each other for ages. The bed is like a cosy cloud and I had a wonderful rest. I got a supergood hint to a fantastic restaurant for dinner. This is the "The Mussel Inn" and I had a perfect medium rare Ribeye steak there. I looooved it in the same way as I love the stay here.

For me there would be nothing being better.

We liked the warm welcome, the comfy cottage and the lovely bush setting.

Very comfortable cottage in a remote location, ideal for longer getaways to relax, as well as for a one night stay on the road. Heather is a wonderful host who explained everything perfectly and even gave us a bag of fresh fruit from her orchard upon check out. Highly recommended, will gladly stay again.

Rural setting

The fact it is rural you must expect the odd very small outside visitor with more than 2 legs to visit you inside 😆

Great place and location fire was cosy and the special wild life was impressive

Besser geht es nicht. Nur für jemanden, die mal aus der Moderne entfliehen möchten. WC und Dusche außerhalb. Super nette Gastgeberin. Absolut Top.

It was such a lovely location to have a very relaxing break. A short walk to a beach, a dip in the river and a morning visit from the ducks!

Heather is a lovely person, that makes you feel comfortable immediately. The house has all you’d ever need, including games, Music,pool, a friendly duck family and a beautiful nature scenery. We recommend this stay 100 times.

Friendly Splendid lush garden

The hosts were extremely friendly and showed us all the local fun places to visit. They delivered Fresh ground coffee every day and made sure we had everything we needed during our stay. This is a hidden gem! The best accommodation of our long trip.

It was all great.

Great location close to tourist spots. Lovely peaceful surroundings and plenty of fire wood. Excellent host!

Nothing - minor internet issues

We spent a very cosy night in this gorgeous wee house. It was pouring with rain and the fireplace was an absolute dream at keeping the place toasty warm. Heather was lovely and so friendly, plying us with homegrown fruit. The house had everything we needed, the bed was comfortable, and the kitchen looked out on to native bush and a couple of docile sheep. Proximity to the Mussel Inn is also a benefit. Would recommend and stay again!

A complete retreat from noise. The only sounds were the birds. Beautifull setting surrounded by trees. Lovely bowl of fruit: figs, fejoas and kiwifruit. I lovely vase of flowers to greet us. Very efficient fire with lots of wood provided.

The only difficulty was my disability. Bathroom difficult with my walker. Despite this I loved this tranquil place.

Peaceful location. Weka with baby chicks a bonus ! So much space inside and out. Clean and very comfy. Heather and Richard welcoming and friendly. Fruit from the orchard and home made scones. Really didn't want to leave. Highly recommend and would stay again.

- it was like paradise on earth! - big orchards right on the property - the garden itself is like an attraction to see - it cant get any more peaceful - slept like babies - great tips from Heather and Richard regarding things to do and see in the area and across the south island

Absolutely everything

There was nothing not to like.

Quiet and peaceful. Everything needed was supplied and the hosts were very helpful.

It was a bit of a drive to beaches due to the local one being inaccessible and a distance from shops. You just need to take what you need so not really a problem.

The property was amazing, there has been a lot of thought and care put into it. The hosts were absolutely fantastic. It was like visiting friends.

Comfortable, relaxed, great hosts

The setting for the house was lovely with garden, orchard, bush, stream all of which we could access. The location was a haven of peace near the sea with a fabulous swimming beach. Our hosts Heather and Richard were kind, generous and welcoming and always willing and able to share their local knowledge.

Can’t think of anything I would have changed. Perfect for us.

Quiet and comfortable. Was not a problem for the host to reconfigure the beds. Toilet with a view was a nice surprise. Fresh flowers were a homely touch. Coffee, milk and fruit provided. Thank you so much.

We liked everything.

An ideal location for couples, friends and families alike. A great base for your Golden Bay adventure with lots of finer details that the host has supplied to make you feel welcomed and comfortable. if you prefer homely rustic over chic modern look no further.

There's nothing to dislike

We loved the whole package! What a wonderful gem hidden away in the lush landscape. We loved the house, the outdoor bathroom with the best air freshener! The fire, pool table, fresh nuts to crack, and all the little extras like the late check out, communication with the hosts. It's truly a magnificent place to escape to.

A bit tricky to find

Heather met us when we arrived (was dark the time we got there) to help carry our bags and show us the way. They had kindly lit the the fire for us so was nice and warm on our arrival. We will definitely be back.

Cozy house in a great garden, very friendly and helpful hosts and the most comfortable mattress ever. Very peaceful place. Well equipped kitchen and nice bathroom. Great wood burner heated the place in no time.

nothing, if only we could have stayed longer!

The fire was great for this winter visit. Us oldies would probably prefer chance to sit in front of it in lounge chairs.

Beautiful place, wonderful hosts, very comfortable house that meets all your needs. Toddlers loved feeding the sheep. Will definitely stay there again.

Amazing place amazing hosts!

Not a thing!!

We booked rather last minute and were pleasantly surprised by our accomodations. We booked it at 4pm, called, and Heather said to check in whenever we're ready. We got there around 5:30 after we picked up groceries for the next 2 days. It's easy to find and in a great location in Golden Bay amongst wooded nature. Upon parking, we were greeted immediately by Heather who helped cart our luggage across a bridge over a small creek. Our little house was a short walk across the lawn, and it was a large space with a lot of light. The photos don't do it justice. Heather had a vase full of fresh cut flowers, 2 bowls of fruit picked from her yard, and a platter of nuts for us to enjoy, and showed us how to use the composting toilet that was in an adjacent build out (it's not inside the house but the 2 step walk is connected and covered). Most toilets we encountered in Golden Bay were composting toilets. She also gave us the option of using the laundry facilities or the flush toilet in her house. Beds were comfortable, kitchen was fully functional, and showers were hot. It was peaceful, beautiful, quiet, and the stars were beautiful. Our toddler loved it. It feels like staying at my grandparent's house, which suited us just fine. On our checkout day, Heather came by and told us to take our time, since no one else booked the place. Great value, would stay there again!
