Reviewed Aug 14, 2026Vous venez d'entrer dans la demeure familiale de Monsieur HIRO et votre hôte vous fait patienter dans un petit salon d'époque. Mettez-vous dans une posture agréable, lotus ou seiza, fermez les yeux et écoutez. Un silence à peine voilé par une musique de Koto d'ambiance traditionnelle... Puis ouvrez les yeux et admirez la pièce où vous vous trouvez dans un lent panarama. Les décors n'ont pas eu besoin d'être pensés et optimisés. Tout ce que vous voyez n'a eu qu'à se donner le mal de traverser les années en gardant son charme. Enfin, collez votre front contre une poutre de la charpente de l'hôtel et humez l'odeur du bois. Cette odeur, vous la retrouverez en respirant le bois de charpente dont sont faits les temples que vous visiterez...... Voilà, sans même le savoir, vous n'avez peut-être pas visité Kyoto ni le Japon, mais vous avez déjà voyagé dans l'esprit et la culture de ce magnifique pays habité par ces gens non moins magnifiques. Merci beaucoup pour ce voyage Monsieur HIRO.
Il a fallu repartir. Toujours avec cette gorge serrée qui qualifie bien les fins de séjour à Kyoto.

Reviewed Aug 3, 2026We stayed as a family in the traditional quadruple room with futon beds, and our experience at Gion Koh was exceptional. The ambience throughout the property is wonderfully calming, a perfect blend of traditional Kyoto charm and peaceful comfort. The room itself was beautifully presented, quiet, and surprisingly spacious for a traditional layout. Sleeping on futons added to the authentic feel, and the overall atmosphere made it easy to unwind after busy days exploring. The location couldn’t be better. Being right in Gion meant we could step outside and immediately enjoy the historic streets, tea houses, and local culture, yet the hotel remained serene and tucked away from the crowds. A truly special place that made our Kyoto stay unforgettable. Highly recommended for families wanting a traditional experience in a perfect setting.

Värden var också väldigt hjälpsam och trevlig, och platsen var mitt i hjärtat av Gion. Kunde inte önskat mer, vi älskade att bo här!

Kitchen was well stocked and offered the opportunity to meet other guests. The garden was a wonderful osasis of calm.
Quite a bit of late night noise from the street. Might be better in a room facing the back.

Reviewed Apr 9, 2026Hiro met us upon arrival and got us checked in. He was so friendly and helpful throughout our stay, for example, giving us advice on where to eat and where to see the best cherry blossoms. Also he forwarded our luggage to the next hotel, which was a great service.
We chose to use shared bathrooms, which was fine for us, but it's not for everyone.

Reviewed Apr 5, 2026町家のお宿です。とても素敵な、日本的なしつらえでした。場所がとてもよく、高台寺も二年坂もすぐそこ。少し足を伸ばせば、八坂神社も徒歩圏内です。ちょうど高台寺の夜間拝観があったので便利でした。夕方5時と朝5時にお寺の鐘が鳴りましたが、いい感じでうるさくはないです。またいわゆる住宅街というか、祇園の小料理屋さんなどのある一角なので、夜は意外なほど静かてした。 ベッドはとても寝心地よく、お部屋のエアコンも快適でした。 一階に大きな鯉が泳いでいる池がある中庭と、リビング、キッチンなどあり、すべてがとてもシックで、おばあちゃんの家に遊びに来ているようでした。 こういうしつらえからか、欧米系の外国人の利用者が多い印象でした。みなさん静かに宿泊されていました。
シャワーとトイレが2つずつで、共用です。部屋にはテレビはありません。そういうのが重要な方には向かないかもです。シャワー、トイレともに他の人とかち合うことなく、不便なく使えました。

Reviewed Mar 20, 2026일본 전통식 숙소에서 지내볼 수 있는 좋은 기회였습니다. 침대 방에서 묵었는데, 전통 다다미방에서 묵으면 더 좋았을 것 같습니다. 공용 욕실/화장실도 깔끔했습니다. 거리도 주요 관광지와 가까이에 있어서 교통도 편리했습니다. 근처에 식당이 많기는 한데, 예약 고객만 받는 경우가 꽤 있었습니다. 잘 알아보고 가셔야 할 것 같습니다.
숙박하는 인원 수 대비 공용 욕실, 화장실 숫자가 조금 부족하지 않았나 싶네요. 아침에 웨이팅이 좀 있습니다.

Très bien situé en plein quartier traditionnel de Kyoto, ce qui rend pratique les visites! Les chambres sont bien décorés, on est en immersion en plein Japon et bien que les douches et sanitaires sont partagés, tout est extrêmement propre et nous n’avons jamais croisé d’autres personnes.

Reviewed Jan 19, 2026The place has captured the Kyoto machiya and is like you are transported back in time. This place is really a must stay when you go to Kyoto. The owner is a gem and is one of the nicest owners we have talked to, super friendly and beyond helpful. It is located in the best area of Kyoto and after a long day of exploring the city we found ourselves enjoying this beautiful small Ryokan and staring at the amazing koi pond that he has as the center of the rooms. The value of the stay is beyond worth it as well. My family are still talking about this magical stay, we have never stayed at a place like it, it really is a once in a life time place.

Reviewed Dec 3, 2025So comfortable and cozy and incredibly close to Kodai-ji (3min walk) and kiyomizu-dera (10 min) temples and the famous Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka streets(5 min). The best part is that it is the hosts ancestral home and they’ve owned it for well over 100 years. They don’t know when it was built but it was many many generations ago. The futon were incredibly comfortable and we slept very well and the rooms was very spacious.

Reviewed Nov 21, 2025We loved this accommodation, the host was very welcoming, beds very comfortable, excellent location for easy access to Kyomizu dera temple, Ryozen Museum, lots of restaurants.
It rained on some days but Gion Koh has umbrellas you can borrow.

Reviewed Nov 19, 2025Fabulous guesthouse in walking distance to everything. Hiro the host was great. Everything was clean and the shared bathroom facilities are very good. Never had to wait to use. Loved the traditional room with tatami mats and outlook over garden and koi pond.
Our room was tiny. Too small for comfort in that we had to walk over the futons to get out the door which is not ideal at night. Hard to get dressed when there is no floor space so had to stand on beds. Hiro our host did fold up the beds during the day for us which was helpful. There are bigger rooms so next time we will ask for this.

Reviewed Nov 14, 2025Everything is gorgeous and on theme. The service was excellent, the bed was comfortable, and the art style never broke form.
The outlet was out away from the bed limited in slots, an adaptor they had added more but it was loose and made me nervous, but this is to be expected in an old house like this.
