The room was good and what we expected overall. The decor was very unique and fun. The staff was fantastic. Everyone was nice, helpful and seemed happy to be there. The extras, such as the pool room and bar were fun. The location was also great; we were within walking distance of everything on main street. We hardly needed to use our car unless we were going into Detroit.

The AC was loud and the cool air was forced across the head of the bed. I had to keep adjusting the volume of the television every time the AC cycled.

It was a good location, easy to get to Royal Oak or Ferndale

The entire property smelled like cigarette smoke, the bathroom was dirty and didn’t even have hand soap, the property overall felt dirty and run down

It was convenient for what we needed to do. It’s fine and fairly clean.

The design of the place was quirky and fun.

Their entire lobby is a bar, so it's confusing when you're trying to check in because the bar tender is also the manager on duty or representative of the hotel. You have to walk up to the bar to get your room keys, etc. The price, the name "hotel," and the slightly misleading photography on booking.com made me think that we were getting something of higher quality. I would have had proper expectations if it were listed as a motel or a hostel. There was a TV provided, but you had to bring your own subscriptions to use streaming services. The "blazing fast" internet was down the first night we were there, but we never found the wifi password anyway. It has that distinct "motel smell." Doesn't come with basic necessities like a coffee pot, hot plate, or microwave. The pillows were thin and cheap, and there were an odd number (3) for two people. They charge another $5 for their breakfast. We aren't sure what was served, because we skipped it. They additionally charge a refundable $100 up front as some sort of deposit against damages when you're checking in. The barn style bathroom door offered no privacy, and when you slide it open, it covers the light switch for the bathroom. So you have to close the door, turn the light on, open the door, go in, and close the door again, at which point there is still a 1/2" gap surrounding the door where you can easily see in and out of the bathroom. The pedestal style basin-only sink took up a lot of room and offered no counter space at all. There was an exposed fuse panel that was labeled to run the room next door and the room upstairs, and was completely unrelated to our room.

I brought my grandfather to the Royal Oak from Sunday July 19-Wednesday July 22 he stayed in room 128. I want to compliment Paige who’s bartends and is front desk attendant. My grandpa had some struggles with TV as far as the streaming. She was very helpful and accommodating. Thank You to your staffs help. Any of my family will stay there in the future.

Staff was very nice. The room was quiet.

The beds are horridly uncomfortable. There was hair from a previous guest in the bathtub.

It was very close to Royal Oak so it was really easy to walk in and out to restaurants and bars. When we entered the hotel with four of us staying in one room with two doubles and the staff realised there was a spare room next door was that wasn’t being used that night and they gave it to us for free. I tried to offer a tip and the staff wouldn’t take it. It was generally just the kindness and the niceness of their hearts that they gave us this and for me a hotel that does this is a hotel that really cares about the customers.

The room smelled so bad like stale smoke! I saw cleaning staff using a lint roller to clean the carpet in another room-that’s disgusting if they don’t vacuum.i felt like our room was dirty just knowing they don’t vacuum. The room was far more outdated than the photos online show and the bed was way too soft.

Very cute motel. Quirky as well. Rooms were clean and as upgraded as possible (bathrooms were still a little old feeling). Rooms were comfortable despite the beds not being the best feeling (woke up every morning with a back ache and never slept through the night). Motel is very geared to hanging out-complete with a pool table, record room, and fire pits. Housekeeping never came to our room (we were there 3 nights) as we didn't know that we had to request.

The hotel itself and the staff there were wonderful. This is a truly unique place with cool people running it. I'll remember this hotel for a long time.

They seem to be experiencing some issues with their housecleaning, and my room was not well cleaned. They are taking steps to remedy it.

The outdoor area is fun and hip, the record room is super cool and this place has a cute little bar open till 2. Nothing beats it. ( also seen local artist shooting a music video in the parking lot)Super neat.

The breakfast was sparse but did the job. Would have like juice options available and perhaps hard-boiled eggs or yogurt parfaits for a protein option. We liked the decor and small bar area. Beds were incredibly comfortable and the room was quiet.

We were confused as to how to find our room, a staff member to direct us would have helped greatly. Room was a bit run down.

This Boutique Motel is like traveling back in time to the 50s or 60s but with a modern twist. It has its own bar Lounge, vinyl record room and pool table.

You can hear the traffic going by.

The location was convenient for accessing shops and restaurants downtown. The room was "cute" and the common areas were very cute! If you want a place to gather with fellow travelers or friends after a long day, this hotel offers plenty of options.

I did not like that there was no coffee in the room and it was not made clear that there was coffee in the lobby in the morning. The hotel itself it old(er) and while the art work in the room is nice to look at the facility is showing some wear. I also could not figure out how to turn off the TV which was on all night. I didn't like the extra light in the room.

No body lotion in the room, no magnifying mirrors, no night lights. Breakfast was ok, very commercial. Frozen berries, not even fully thawed, substandard bread and bagels, nothing unique or delicious. Very low effort.

I booked this place since it had so many good reviews however that was not my experience. The staff were friendly but the room was not worth the cost of the stay. The beds were the worst beds I’ve ever slept on and I’m not exaggerating. Not a single person in my family slept through the night. Tossed and turned. Could not get comfortable. The Apple TVs were nice to have streaming available and the room was clean. I can’t recommend staying here if you want a good nights sleep tho. Especially for the cost.

Heating and cooling unit was a little loud in my opinion but it kept the room a comfortable temperature and would stay again.

The cost for my stay was jacked up for the weekend- would've been more cost effective elsewhere. I always stayed here in previous trips to support local business and the fact that it is so close to my son's place whom I travel from Hawaii. It already costs me an arm and a leg just to get here, so I was always pleased with the cost of my stay at Royal Oak Hotel, however, this time I was rather disappointed with some of the changes- I understand the price increases- however, the cost effectiveness is going to make me re-think my stay the next time I come to visit (Royal Oak Hotel was my immediate go to every time... which is probably my 5th+ time) There used to be a free coffee bar and complimentary breakfast sandwich next door...no more. (disappointing) There is a continental breakfast set up until 10am to which I enjoyed the free coffee and the banana. (disappointing) Other than that, the staff is friendly and accommodating and it's still clean. The fire pit area has been upgraded a little. Overall it was ok (which used to be very impressive considering)

Great Location, easy parking and nice updating of old retro hotel. The room was large and the wifi was good with plenty of hot water in shower. I did find the bed not quite as comfortable as I like, but this could be a me thing, I appreciate a very firm bed. Also do to the motel nature and rooms facing the parking lot, a good amount of parking lot noise can come through. We heard a car doling in the parking lot for 30 minutes at midnight. When we got there the remote for heat control was not working in our room, front office tried to fix it and when they couldn't get it done within 15 minutes they immediately moved us to comparable room, they were very polite and attentive regarding this. I like how the room is furnished and updated. Nice mini-fridge and microwave. There is no coffee maker, but they have coffee in the lobby with continental style breakfast every morning. The room was clean comfortable. Easy walk to the farmers market and several restaurants. Nice markets are about 3-5 minute drive away. Our son recently moved to the area and we will stay here again when we come to visit. I think this property will show off well in the summer, rather then the dead of winter when we were here!

All in all we were not elated with the place and only chose it because it was pet-friendly and not real expensive.
