Beautiful architecture Friendly and attentive staff
Nothing
The staff were amazing. The service and hospitality was over the top. Breakfast and dinner were beyond expectations. The location could not have been better.
Lovely place right by the river , food was great and excellent staff who were very helpful and kind. Room was traditional and very beautiful. Onsen was cool too
Food was amazing, location was amazing, staff were all very kind and accommodating.
location, right on the river and heart of old Kurashiki; also liked that the old-property-feel gave a sense of the history of the place; staff were strict about rules which was was fair for an old historical building; staff very kind and polite and remembered to let us visit the garden when it was available; we used the on-site onsen, neet & tidy, well organised
we had breakfast and dinner, food was good, some dishes exceptional - one complaint, although the ladies were saying “take-your-time” they kept bringing next dishes out a bit too early so one felt slightly rushed
The experience was amazing and quite authentic. The accommodations are delightful. The bath experience and walking around town and traditional clothing with a lantern was so unique and a trip highlight
There were two miscommunications. One was that I had a shellfish allergy and that was not properly conveyed to the kitchen. The other was we were supposed to eat dinner in our room and somehow we were told to eat in the dining room instead. The staff was very apologetic and quite accommodating. But these two miscommunications were a little frustrating.
Proximity to the heart of town. Great service. Authentic Japanese experience
The whole experience was amazing. Both the house & gardens are exceptional. All staff were welcoming and helpful. Kuma in particular went out of his way to help us and we could not be more grateful.
Comfort simplicity friendliness. One of the best dinners of our trip!
Staff were very attentive, friendly and understanding.
Service was excellent and attentive. Dinner and breakfast were fantastic. Beautiful and historic location. We regret not having more time to explore.
Unsurprisingly, for a heritage building the bedroom was small and did not have a separate shower. The public bath was simple and clean but might not be for everyone.
This accomodation was just something else! What a stay! I assumed it is going to be beautiful but nothing can prepare you for the calm and wonderful ryokan right next to one of the most romantic canals ever. The food is also superb, as well as the onsen. Also, Kurashiki is a super nice small town where you can enjoy shopping, go to pottery class or just chill with amazing food and coffee (there are several great spots). Also, Kurashiki has got an outlet centrum nearby so you can buy some stuff pretty cheap. I loved it!
the meals were traditional and exceptional - if you like a full breakfast and grilling your own fish.. it waas stunning and appreciated- wish I could have eaten it
i really needed a private bathroom which we didnt consider before booking... also didnt find sleeping comfy enough and odd pillows with beans in them
This was my second time in Kurashiki, I love the feel of the old town, and it's in a great location geographically for a stop between bigger, more travelled cities/areas. So, I knew this building was in a beautiful location, along the river in historic Kurashiki. What I was even more charmed by was the people working and the building itself. This ryoukan used to be something like a storehouse for a merchant ~300 years ago and after some time was turned into a ryoukan only ~55 years ago. I enjoyed the feel of this house. Sure you can hear through walls from time to time, but that added to the experience for me and the whole place was cozy and beautiful, with a tree even older than the building located in the garden outside. Everyone working was so kind and hospitable, especially the one we talked to during dinner, Watabe. The dinner may have been my favorite meal in all of Japan. The breakfast was outstanding as well. What a treat.

What a great find. The location is superb as it is right in the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter. The staff were fantastic and attended to my needs so well. My stay was for three nights and my plan included breakfast and dinner. Dinner is brought to your room and the staff explained it beautifully. You’re also provided with a menu. My room was awesome and very comfortable. The futon is very comfortable and you are provided with a sweet little lamp. The ryokan itself is stunning with beautiful polished wood floors and tatami mats in your room. I can’t commend this place highly enough.
Nothing.
Beautiful traditional interiors and room. A Ryokan in central Kurashiki, opening on to the canal. Excellent breakfast and dinner. Lovely public bath, sitting area with coffee. Staff were welcoming and caring with no request too great. Front of house management were particularly professional and courteous.
I wish I could have stayed longer.
We stayed in the Aichi room. It was beautiful and comfortable. The views to the garden made it seem like we were in our own country house. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The ryokan is on the canal so everything is right outside your door. Don’t miss the Ohara Museum. It has an impressive collection of art.
Wow what an amazing experience! From the minute we arrived till the moment we left could not be faulted. True taste of Japanese tradition cuisine & culture.
Lovely food; accommodating staff; nice courtyard view from room.
My husbands physical problems with bad ankles were a challenge -painful to have to take off shoes.
Beautiful property in a special location.. I can’t fault it. The food and service were exceptional, it was an amazing experience which we thoroughly enjoyed.
Great location in a very pretty area. Amazing food
Very uncomfy pillows and mattresses. Dining room lacked ambience
The warming welcome and cleanliness, spot on,all the people working there were very lovely plus the younger ladies I struggled about making my bed and they came after dinner and made mine and all the stuff perfectly prepared. They definitely like their job and the place I reckon

Sehr schönes traditionelles Ryokan, sehr freundlich Gastgeber :)
The food was amazing! The location is amazing! The staff is super friendly! Onsen was super relaxing!
Nothing that was not nice! A detailed instruction on "how to use/behave in Japanese onsen" would be amazing (I googled it, so in the end, no major problem)
The experience was amazing! The staff were so lovely, the food was incredible, the room was gorgeous, would recommend it a million times. Thank you!
Nothing!
Wonderful staff and place. I totally recommend this as a Japanese experience. The onsen is delicious as well as the food. The futon was more comfortable than others I've had on this trip. Being here made me feel grateful for being alive.
The facility was very clean and the staff was exceptionally helpful and polite. The included dinner was very traditional and delicious. The ryokan is located perfectly within the historical quarter, so I very much recommend this place! We even got served tea after arrival and got our futons made for us during dinner time.
Ras
The staff were outstanding, so kind and helpful. The food was delicious
The streets around the ryokan get very crowded during the day.
Very Nice experience, kind hosting. They noticed our needs in no time. When we arrived, the hotel people came to the door
Amazing experience! Staff very welcoming.. The food and the service are amazing
Incredible dinner and breakfast. Staff are gracious and friendly. The location is stellar in the heart of the Bikan quarter.
Beautiful traditional stay right in the heart of old town Kurashiki. Lovely attentive staff
Nice traditional house, good location and nice food, tough a bit old school.
Everything is very traditional and a bit old school. Very strict time table for dinner and breakfast. Overpriced

Bad staying experience: small room, no lift to the 2nd floor, tiny onsen(public bath), food quality is not good and few choice.
A beautiful historical ryokan. The staff is attentive and responsive. At disposal, tea, coffee and fresh water.
The Japanese breakfast was unusually salty. Dinner was allright although it did not meet expectations : dishes were passed over to us very quickly, we could not appreciate tastes as we would have wished. Also, it is a little disappointing not to be able to enjoy freely the garden.
This was one of the best hotel experiences I’ve ever had. We stayed as a family of four for two nights, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful always ready to assist us with anything we needed. The Ryokan itself is beautiful and full of rich history. Its location is perfect, right in the center of Kurashiki, Japan’s famous denim town. The food was absolutely amazing, every dish was full of flavor and clearly prepared with care by a skilled chef. The shared bathroom was clean, and it was a great opportunity to experience a traditional Japanese bath. If you book this hotel, don’t forget to take a short evening walk through Kurashiki, it’s truly beautiful.
This was a very special place to stay- I think possibly the best hosted experience I have ever had. It is a traditional ryokan and so I expected the courteous welcome and the room to be laid out with a futon while I ate, as well as a lovely ‘ofuro’ bath. However my expectations were exceeded because the staff gave a truly warm and welcoming, homely service - I really felt as if I were a guest in someone’s home. Everything was explained in detail so that I could appreciate the flowers, the history of the town, best places to visit, the local art gallery (they even have local artwork in the hotel) and of course the ‘Kaiseki Ryori’ (formal many course meal). I was quite sad to leave. Nothing was too much trouble and I felt like a ‘respected guest’ - thank you so much!
Absolutely nothing
Spotlessly clean, excellent location and service
The perfect place to live out any dreams of being in Rurouni Kenshin. In fact they shot one scene from the movie (a bridge where Sanoske and Kenshin duel) two or three buildings down. The ryokan serves a traditional breakfast and dinner, they make your futon for you, and lend you a yukata. In front of the place is a little river in the center of a historical district (Kurashiki Binkan). The staff are very friendly and accommodating.
The staff at Ryori Ryokan Tsurugata were amazing. They are all so friendly and attentive. The dinner in the room was an amazing experience and the breakfast meal was a great way to start the day. We had a room with our own private garden which provided a great view in the morning as we woke up. This has been my favorite place to stay in Japan and I hope to revisit Kurashiki just to stay at this place again.
Exceeds expectations! Great location.
Nice room with garden view
None
Location was perfect in the old town or Kurashiki - the were absolutely amazing!
Very typical Ryokan style. Best was the front desk manager who was fantastic: thoughtful, friendly, knowledgeable. Made the whole experience. Location was perfect for tourism.
Good: -Food is great, good quantity and quality. Especially the seafood! -Location is great, in the center of the shopping area. Especially beautiful at night and early morning. Could be better: -The room smelled a bit like restroom - but seemed to come from the AC unit? Maybe it needs to be cleaned. -A no smoking sign outside the bath/shower area - in the morning it smelled like smoke, even after closing the window.
