Warm and comfy with great staff
Like staying in a museum !!! A walk into the west coast history we were upgraded to the old bank suites and it was our lucky day. So comfortable and luxurious accomodation . Amazing friendly staff . Good communication. did my washing at customer washing machine unavailable that day. Booked dinner at restaurant for Wednesday very nice.
No bottle opener. No towel rail in bathroom.
Nice and cosy stay it wasn't a busy night but. Open fire and a warm welcome from the host. I stayed in the Old bank. Tabby behind the bar amazing service and great chat, thank you. Food was excellent well priced

On a cold winter day, to enter a lovely warm room is very welcoming.
Historic with a lot of charm
All good
Jackie was fabulous we were in Kumara for a funeral. She was sensitive and kind
Not much
Included breakfast was continental buffet. Adequate but not exceptional.
Ambience in the bar that evening where they had a guest singer .
The hotel was really charming and the cottage accommodation we booked beautifully decorated and clean. There was bike storage available and it wasn't a problem to leave our cars parked the following day while we rode the Wilderness trail.
Unfortunately one of the cottages was located some distance from the hotel, however we had a car and it was very quaint. The second cottage had too many beds placed in a very small room, which were antique frames that squeaked at every turn. I did mention this to staff the following morning so hopefully it is rectified as 2 hours sleep was not great. Do not arrive early as the duty manager was very strict with the 2pm check in.
Comfortable heritage cottage, comfortable beds and modern bathrooms. Main bedroom had a bath in it. I think the money could be better spent elsewhere in the cottage.
Cleanliness not up to scratch for the price paid. Some furnishings in lounge tatty and torn. My bedroom needed a good clean with dead bugs and cobwebs in the corners and someone's pill under the bedside table. Washing machine spindle needed a clean, as did the tub next to it which had a filthy old broom and dirty rag sitting in it. Will be writing to management with full info and photos so they can address the problem. I can appreciate staffing can be a problem in some areas but it you can't clean it, don't let it out. Kitchen utensils looked like they came from the local op shop.
The staff were amazing. It a proper old bed and breakfast pub. We loved it.
Not enough wardrobe space but that was minor. we were only stopping one night
Utile pour une étape . Bonne literie
Néanmoins on était prévenu .
Lovely old refurbished building with lots of charm.
N/A
This is a hotel with history and the rooms take one back in time, with the added advantage of a modern bathroom. A restaurant on site is convenient, and it’s just a few minutes walk to see glow worms after dark.
Location, historic building
Lovely well equipped and decorated cottage.
Too far from main hotel 650m. Didn’t realise that. Not great if biking in the rain. Directions to get there by staff we met in the evening vague and only verbal. No map. Tv poor.
Place was dirty and had mould. very dear
It was elegant, tastefully decorated. The beds were comfy and there was a claw foot bath in the master bedroom, in addition to the ensuite!
We couldn't figure out the tv.
Full of character, comfortable, and clean. We liked being in the Kumara village. Nice to have the hotel restaurant and bar available.
Everything was great.
Unique charm, quiet location, the history, well curated, clean
A few maintenance issues in terms of loose fixtures, or tap in hand basin
There is a path in back leading to a glow worm extravaganza.
Cottage was very comfortable
Traditional
Everything was just perfect; room, food, hospitality, warm, clean. The history of the Hotel and surrounds is wonderful. We were biking the Wilderness Trail and were all set up for bikers and bike storage.... Brilliant!!
Nothing, could not have been a better place to stay.
Really enjoyed the room and it was entertaining to read all the articles about the "notorious drunk" the room was named after. Loved the decor and location. When it got dark it was a two minute walk past the cabins at the back to see glow worms which was pretty cool.
There was a fridge in the common area upstairs but would have liked one in the actual room.
The decor hit the mark for the era of the hotel
Wonderful spacious room
The cottage was nice Restaurant had good food
The windows was left open and there were so many migies.
Serene escape and so lovely and quiet Could hear the birds and so nice not to listen to traffic noise Room was clean and neat and had a great feel Loved the information given on the history of the place
It was too expensive for what it was The breakfast was not worth the extra money paid for B&B Seperate room in the miners cottage needs AC or a fan to deter mosquitos but staff at the bar lent us a fan so problem solved
The room was wonderful, beautiful and with an impressive quality, very comfortable and exceptional comfort, the restaurant and bar very nice and the food delicious
It's was very period decor, very Victorian, totally unexpected, four poster bed, free standing bath tub, tea cups and saucer, really clean, very friendly staff, good food in restaurant
Not much else in the town
Gute Lage
Everything! This was the highlight of our NZ tour so far, we were in the “Annie” room in the main hotel, spotlessly clean, everything we could need, so peaceful. We had dinner in the pub and the food was fabulous. Tabby, who works in the bar/restaurant was exceptional in her service, highly recommend a stay here.
Only staying one night, we loved it.
Very smelly and old property.. windows and door and broken
Very nice hotel and very good dinner and breakfast
Breakfast was very poor
Sehr Stilvolle Möbel. In alte Zeiten zurückgesetzt.
When you enter på village, you maybe think: where am i? But this hotell is something else. They have revonvated the hole theatre and the bank on the other side off the road. It is all in victorian style! Really good food, really good people and oh my good for the interier.
The village can drag it down alittle BUT I thinking that around some years from now the village will flourish. It needs more people with good buisness ideas.
Handy to Wilderness trail Friendly and helpful staff Locking and charging bikes in shed Laundry available
Nothing
We love staying at the Theatre Royal, love the history, the quirkiness, the staff. Some great “ secret “ fishing spots nearby and it’s always fun exploring the area - with so much to see and do . We stayed in the seddon suite this time and loved it . Have stayed in all the hotel rooms some of them multiple times . We will keep coming back .
Previously we’ve always had amazing meals at the restaurant- this time the food wasn’t great. We didn’t say anything as the staff were absolutely wonderful and we can all have a bad day - even chefs .
Loved the old style of the cottage. Amazing and so lovely.
The water pressure was non existence in the showers.
Idyllic spot to stop on the coast.
Nothing too much trouble for staff. A serendipitous find of an idiosyncratic venue. We absolutely loved it after some of the soulless hotels we stayed in on our vacation. We stayed in one if the "cabins". Just great.
Owners had done fantastic work restoring the hotel and facilities. Cottage was comfortable and had everything you needed for a few days stay. Very handy having the hotel so close for a few drinks and a beautiful meal. Staff were great
Cottage had a stale musty smell and very cold on arrival. Improved once aired and warmed up. Bathroom had a damp smell and this didn't improve. On further inspection, we found a small area of black mould/rot in the skirting board near the shower. Apparently our cottage had been upgraded, but looking into it, it cost less than what we had paid
Nada
Great stay, we stayed in one of the Miners cottages. Very roomy. Restaurant great to eat at. Staff fantastic. Don’t forget to check out the glow worms.
Breakfast was fantastic
A one night stay on a roadie down the West Coast heading for the snow. We have stayed here before and frankly, wouldn't consider anywhere else. This time we had a miner's cottage (free upgrade!), it was warm and quirky which we love. Ate in the bar, a real kiwi pub experience and friendly locals. The area is very interesting
I like that this property is close tho where we needed to be.
The location was perfect for us. We enjoyed being able to have dinner at the hotel. The staff were very helpful and friendly
Both of the spaces that we were in were well appointed and warm - and very prettily renovated..All of the reception staff are terrific.
There was a booking mix-up which meant we weren't in the room we had booked for either night of our two night stay. The staff worked hard to rectify this, which I really appreciated, but while both spaces were very nice, it was not the stay we had expected (and splashed out on), and we never got to relax properly because of moving.
The delicious food at the restaurant and the experience of dining in a space that felt almost like living as a local made this the most wonderful feel of our entire trip. I hope to return to this place the next time I visit New Zealand.
I hope the hotel can provide a simple map with directions on how to reach the accommodation.
Staff and furnishings and extra touches to the decor and bathroom supplies
Breakfast, only in it should have been described as a continental kne, we were expecting a cooked breakfast.
My favourite spot to stay on the Coast
I loved the cottage nestled among natives. Bellbirds & fantails singing. It was private. Comfy bed. Two bathrooms & a bath in the main bedroom ❤️ Friendly, caring staff
It was a bit cold. It needs a new logburner, it didn't seal properly or put out a lot of heat. It would also benefit from having curtains/ blinds on all windows & doors to keep the heat in. A cutlery drawer would be easier than getting it out of the pantry cupboard.
