Charming location
Need to fix the potholes in the road
Nice food
Breakfast could have some fresh fruit and yoghurt
Location- superb
Very limited evening meal menu.
A comfortable quiet room. We were given a room with the walk in shower we requested. Fresh fruit and choice for breakfast appreciated.
We travelled from junction 39 on M6 and missed the turning off the A6 as the sign from that direction was damaged.
Zeer vriendelijk en behulpzaam personeel.
Ligt erg afgelegen. Je hebt een auto nodig om hier te komen, geen openbaar vervoer aanwezig. Wel shuttle service van hotel aanwezig!
A lovely old hotel full of character and charm.
Could do with a redecorating.

Friendly staff Lift to floor for room so no stairs to climb. Beautiful area to stay and they support a colony of red squirrels. Very good buffet breakfast.
The Sat Nav took us on a road that was more potholes than road. The staff told us that the road was owned by the railway and that the main entrance was from the A6. The bed was not comfortable with any movement by one partner affecting the other. The dinner menu was limited but the food was good.
Very clean, quiet, comfortable and friendly. Will be using again.
For me the hotel is in a fabulous location, with very friendly, welcoming staff.
Remote location, amazing etched and stained glass wall set in mahogany. Beautiful antique lift. Edwardian elegance. Gentle walks. Waterfall, red squirrels and interesting history!
Nothing really but the access road is narrow but accessible for coaches.
Both dinner and breakfast were very good.
Beautiful location - loved the decor of the hotel it has a lot of history- rooms are a nice size
Before you book you might want to request a room that isn’t overlooking the roof of the kitchen as it was incredibly noisy with the fans, you could hear it constantly with the windows closed - turns off at 9.30pm but starts again at 6.40 am - unable to open to windows as the smell of the kitchen filled the room along with the sound of the fans. Bed was too hard for my liking.
Personnel adorable et très bon restaurant
The staff were excellent. The Hotel is unique.
Probably a bit dated, maybe could do with a spruce up.
Amazing place! Around nice nature! Very wonderful Hotel
This ii our second visit to Shap Wells, the food was second to none, the staff most helpful and friendly, we have booked again for our wedding anniversary at the end of October, lovely place to stay and value for money
Nothing
Breakfast very good. We stayed in Bunk House, room was comfortable although had cobwebs and spiders. actual building in poor shape, needs a good paint and a good clean.
Used a sign posted road to get to hotel full of pot holes. Exit by a better road.
Not much ,bed was ok, breakfast ok
Hotel needs up dating badly, dinning room is like a canteen, TV signal in room kept braking off, Hotel needs windows cleaning they are filthy, Noisy very noisy guests banging doors early morning, having loud chats on room corridors.Too expensive for quality I got
The rooms carpets are very old and the windows could do with the clean. The access road to the hotel is in very poor condition. Some of the staff are friendly and not all of them. Breakfast was average and the orange juice is not something that I would recommend.
Good
Location
The staff were good, they couldn't do anymore to help. They had a lift to all floors and the food was very good.
The car park is very large but if you came in late you struggled to park in a safe place. The room was nice BUT needed renovation. The wallpaper was coming away in places, the units in the bathroom were laminated and cobwebs all over. My wife had to clean the windows because they hadn't been cleaned in ages. No bath mat so very slippery when coming out of the shower.
Lovely hotel, lovely location and facilities, lovely room, staff very helpful and friendly
Nothing not to like
The hotel is amazing if you want to step back in time, it’s like being on the queen Mary. It’s also in a fabulous location for the lake District. I’m back onto the motorway. Red squirrels are around in the trees at the hotel. The staff are super friendly and helpful.
We stayed in the bath house, beautiful location right above a babbling Brook. Room was very good clean comfortable everything you needed. The only thing was the shower could’ve done with some would cleaning.
nothing
Some carpets were very dirty My room was not properly dusted The dining room was horrible and very noisy The breakfast orange juice had gone off
Historical stop over. Great art deco woodwork! Unexpected! Very pleasant staff and good location, in the middle of nowhere but near the motorway
Approach road a bit potholed
It is a short distance from the M6 and convenient for. Retaking a journey to Scotland in an area not well served with hotels. It is quiet. We had a spacious room. The decor is art nouveau
No fault of the hotel, but access from the motorway is via heavily potholed lanes.
Fine old building.
Awful manager and overall treatment. Felt very unvalued as a customer.
all be it out away from penrith etc it was a lovely setting .breakfast was good
there could be more choice in food we ate out both nights if there had more we would have ate there we were travelling with 2 children and table du hote wasn't suitable
Used this hotel as a coach driver since the early 90.s. Have used it as a paying guest for the last 3/4 years always excellent
No squirrels. Not the hotel fault though . We brought my wife’s cousins from Lincoln to see red squirrels in as they had never seen any. Unfortunately a disease has nearly desimated the squid so never saw any. Still it’s an excuse to bring them back to the hotel
Breakfast. Comfy beds.
Games room was in a shocking state. Missing snooker balls, darts board was a joke. Carpet tiles were loose pretty much everywhere. Gym was equally shoddy.
Dinner was excellent high quality
Dogs allowed all over hotel not only in annex as described but in hotel rooms This is ok if you are a dog owner but definatly not otherwise. Revolting
Remote location. Friendly staff. Traditional features in the building
Poor quality entry road on one side. Very slow dinner service. Our room needed updating and more thorough cleaning
We loved the art-deco/regency styling especially in the bar area reception and dining room. The quirky nature of the whole place. The room was perfectly adequate and comfortable and the food was excellent. The prices including the rooms, food and drinks were very reasonable. The hotel is very isolated which we wanted but is within easy access of the M6. And quiet, complete silence at night. Highly recommended.
Not a lot really.
The staff were outstanding. Friendly, helpful and funny! The location is stunning. Our rooms were comfortable and very clean. Dinner was excellent and we had a lovely breakfast too. The forest with the red squirrels is enchanting and we saw a squirrel which was a real bonus. Also, dog friendly!
Really, I am struggling here to think of anything meaningful for us as a family. It is remote so if you want a place where you can walk, for example, to another pub, that would not be easy.
Ample with good quality
Nil
Excellent location, beautiful scenery. Very much in sticks would need to drive to most locations. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Beautiful history to the hotel.
If not busy the bat shut early at approximately 9.30. The Garden shown on booking.com doesn't exist and nor does the bridge shown. We did enquire about this and was told improvements were going to be done. No entertainment while we were there. I can't say enough how wonderful, kind and caring the staff were. If a question was asked they tried there hardest to find the answer.
Perfect location for those who values peace and tranquility. Beautiful landscapes surrounding the hotel, waterfall, creek and mountain river, just beautiful. Hotel staff was exceptionally nice and helpful.
Exceptionally helpful staff when we arrived tired and hungry
we stayed in the bath house just by the river and we really enjoyed the views we walked around the forest up to the queen's moument and up to the waterfall as far as we could. The views are stunning. The owner has lots of knowledge and can't do more for us with our little dog to make our stay enjoyable. The separate dinner room and lounge for dogs and family to be able to eat together was nice touch. The rooms are spacious, quiet, and comfortable. The food was brilliant we had a meal at the restaurant in the 1st night enjoy fish and chips and peas and cheesecake also steak and ale pie chips and veg followed by fruit stack. All food was taste and good value for the cost. Breakfast was a buffet with a good choice to cater to everybody. They hotel is surrounded by red squirrels. But sadly we didn't see any on our walls with slinky.
They only thing is the very narrow road down to the hotel which in the dark is hard to see. But otherwise everything else is good
The food was great.
The staff weren't the most friendliest bunch, strict 6-8 am breakfast and the same for dinner, 6-8 pm ONLY! We watched guests arrive at 7:45, and we're told they had to leave their bags where they were and go straight into dinner, b4 checking into their room. I booked online and explained i had 2 dogs and was their any issues with this, as website said dog friendly. I got a total cost of our stay sent to me, however when we arrived the bill had jumped up to over £60. When I questioned this they said additional cost was for my small dogs, I explained i contacted the hotel directly and no one replied and told us of the additional charges, as I would have looked else where. Said I was happy to pay half but not the total amount, staff then spoke to manager who, basically said tough, pay the full amount or leave! We had been driving for over 7 hrs! With 2 children. Eventually the manager came out, said I should have called them directly???? Eventually agreed to me paying the £30. We were however shoved out in the bath house which isn't as pictured and wasnt part of the hotel at all. Wish I had booked at a Premier Inn, Went to use their hair dryer which started to smoke and was near to bursting into flames. Thier fire alarms kept going off multiple times. 0 atmosphere in the place, reminded me of a nursing home.
A pleasant, clean hotel
Breakfast was very good. Bed comfortable. Staff friendly and efficient. Location good for meeting family doing the Coast to Coast walk.
Having a false fire alarm at 00.50, due to some guest deciding to have a shower, apparently, and the steam set it off.!!My husband fell out of bed in the confusion, hurting his knee and hip, both of which are replacements. The knee is still badly bruised. Maybe a notice could be put in rooms telling guests not to shower at anti-social hours?
Very nice and excellent staff. Could do with a good overhaul and new carpets but pleasant and good value for money
Old, tired, run down decor. Not enough staff to offer correct levels of service. Luke warm breakfast and slow to replenish items. Too few staff.
Staff were exceptional
Shower was a bit dated
Lovely setting with a small woodland next to it offering walks. Good breakfast and large rooms. Staff very friendly. Quite quiet considering proximity of the M6.
As no cold water tap you could not drink from the bathroom taps. Suggest bottled water. May need to consider installing aircon as summers getting hotter. Evening meals a bit expensive, as captive audience.
The buffet breakfast was amazing. The location and seeing the red squirrels.
I have stayed in a couple of hotels before but this was the first time I booked it myself. There were several nice welcoming emails sent to me during the week before my arrival, which I appreciated. Good breakfast and dinner options. Food presentation was great. Room was clean and tidy. Basic amenities all there including kettle, tea, coffee, milk pods, sugar and sweetener. This was important to me as I am a heavy tea/coffee drinker but not a fan of espresso machines. Staff were welcoming and polite. Made me comfortable and looked after in general. I stayed during August and coming off the M6, the surrounding areas to the hotel had carpets of purple heather. It was a lovely sight and I stopped to take photographs. The immediate surroundings to the hotel was nice too. There is a little stream and a pocket of woods just outside, which makes for a nice walk in the morning. Apparently, there are rare red squirrels too but I did not see at the time. Floors sound creaky in many places but I didn't mind this. I was at the 2nd floor and access was not stair free, since lift only reaches some areas.
Please paint on the car park the areas where parking isn't preferred like the coach turning areas / access ways. Feeling comfortable about parking is very important to me when travelling. I had made a second booking to extend my stay for another night well before my arrival. At the time of booking, I was told that I wouldn't need to check out after the first night since it was the same room. This wasn't the case during my stay and I was asked to check out after the first night, as the receptionist wasn't sure which room I'd be in for the second night. It turned out to be exactly the same room. It would've been nice if they made a bit more effort to coordinate this internally to avoid the unnecessary checkout in the middle. There was a constant sound if I opened the window, similar to those from a boiler room. I noticed it was turned down during late night.
Beautiful old hotel in a lovely wooded glen. Gorgeous food.
A little bit dirty in corridors, needed a dust and cleaning of glass doors and hoover. Tired dated decor
The hotel is a popular stopover for travellers heading to Scotland, and it is well equipped to handle a steady flow of guests. The staff mentioned that some days see as many as five tour buses arriving, so they are no strangers to managing larger groups and quick turnarounds efficiently. Despite its popularity, the hotel retains an authentic and characterful atmosphere, with traditional hunting portraits and antler displays adorning the walls. Set in a stunning location with beautiful views, it offers direct access to woodland trails where red squirrels can often be spotted, although unfortunately we were not lucky enough to see one during our visit. After a long day of travel, the hearty and satisfying evening meal was a welcome end to the day
There were a few things however, I feel should be pointed out as constructive feedback. - The postcode provided in the Booking app takes you very close to the hotel. However, with only a few hundred metres remaining, we encountered a road closure caused by a gated access point. It appears this has been introduced by local residents to reduce traffic from cars and tour buses. While an alternative route to the hotel is available, it added approximately 20 minutes to our journey. It would have been helpful to receive advance notice of this restriction, along with clearer directions to the alternative access route - The lock on the door of our room (Room 96) was not functioning during our stay. Given the hotel's remote location, we never felt particularly concerned about security, and we did not expect any issues overnight. However, it would have been reassuring to be able to lock the door, particularly as we were staying in the Old Bath House, which is situated away from the main hotel building. Ensuring the lock is repaired would help provide added peace of mind for future guests. - The kitchen closes at 8PM. We arrived at 7:25PM and were lucky to have food. Again this is useful to know upfront, especially when travelling with young and hungry kids. - The mattresses are in need of replamcement. I could feel and hear the springs move with every turn. - We had 1 toilet roll in the bathroom that was almost gone. No extra ones to be found. - The TV didn't work and the WIFI was so weak that my phone could not connect (4G works fine though) - The staff was friendly but they felt disconnected, complacent. The reception and check-out felt transactional.
De sfeer van het hotel
Kamer naast een binnendeur. Veel lawaai telkens er iemand binnen of buiten gaat.
The hotel was very charming with an elegant vintage style, which I loved. It was out of the way but also close to the motorway, without the noise of the traffic, which was great!
The only thing I would say about the property is the parking. There were enough spaces, although there was no structure to how or where people parked, especially when there’s a coach party there. If the spaces were marked out and with signs of where not to park, I believe it would be more practical for everyone.
A beautiful location and really enjoyed some of the older features of the hotel. Staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful.
The mattress was too soft and springy for my liking - prefer a firmer one. There were also a few cobwebs in the room.
Location is superb and it was reasonably priced
The bins on one of our rooms hadn’t been emptied when we arrived. There were women’s sanitary products in the bin and broken reading glasses on the floor. In the dining room we witnessed a waiter picking up several uneaten bread rolls off a guests table after they left and put them back into the bread basket. Then proceeded to offer them to another table unbeknown to them. This will probably follow why they only have a 2 star food hygiene rating
A fantastic stay . Will definitely be coming back
Very good thankyou
Awful driveway, pot holed No toilet brush
fantastic traditional hotel with amazing staff...the food in the restaurant at night is fantastic and breakfast is very good.
nothing to dislike
Super easy check-in, and the hotel was full of character! Plenty of parking, and the beds were really comfortable. Great to be able to sleep 3 adults in a room, all in proper beds.
Aircon and/or a fan would have been great, as it was quite a warm night.
The breakfast was self service. There was plenty of food available. The good was good
There was a shortage of staff. You could not get a drink until late afternoon.. The hotel was full with two coast parties and you could not get served. The menu for the evening meal was very limited. They changed our room three times.
All staff very friendly and a very relaxed feel to the hotel. An AMAZING breakfast and compliments to the chef and dining room staff. Thank you
Excellent location for walking and exploring nearby trails and woodland
Bathroom improvements and better quality and variety for breakfast food
Staff very friendly and location
Hotel super z klimatem stary wiktoriański wystrój,jedzenie pyszne polecam na 100 procent
Jeśli chodzi o czystość to trochę do dopracowania
Lovely old hotel at half the price of other lake District hotels but despite that it didn't disappoint It's like walking back into the 1930s with a art deco feel The staff were brilliant and the room was clean and comfortable
Not a complaint really but the web site gives the impression that the restaurant is more high end than it really is and we expected it to be expensive so we nearly ate elsewhere before arriving In reality it's a normal restaurant serving normal but excellent food at reasonable prices They should put a menu on their website
Location was fantastic, walks right from the door step. Little stream nearby. Beautifully maintained and had the vibe of a ‘Downtown Abbey ‘ era. They have a fantastic chef, the food was delicious!! We had both the evening meal and the breakfast. They have a lift which really helps. Everything clean and charming.
We were on the second floor and it was the tail-end of the heat wave and a fan in the room would have really helped. Other than that there were no complaints!!
A good variety. Specially liked the muesli with yoghurt and several fruits Pre booked evening meal was very tasty and good value
All good loved the hotel but sad no red squirrels
Staff were cheerful, very helpful and took time to answer questions It was explained on check in that coach tours were staying that night and staff suggested we select times for dinner and breakfast. Excellent buffet breakfast - even had fried bread, haven't seen that in years Woodland walk to see Red Squirrels
Bathroom was a bit tired
The walks , and great breakfast , nice bar.
Just a bit dated ,but very art decp
Convenient location for the m6 north and exploring local area Homely hotel , quiet location, friendly staff and lovely food
Great location and friendly staff. Particularly liked the bar.
Food OK
Room needed cleaning and one bed had a giant dip in the middle so very uncomfortable
Dinner was excellent. Good service and not to expensive
A little bit tatty around the edges but when you see the place and its history that is understandable
Hotel with lots of history, very nice building. Friendly staff.
Bathroom needs tls.
Nice, old hotel. Nice staff and quiet surroundings.
Bathroom could be cleaner.
Great location. and views. Comfortable room and bed. Tea making facilities in room very welcome. Bath very welcome after a hot day of mountain walking! Friendly staff and great array of food for breakfast. Lots of seating areas/lounges on ground floor for people to relax in.
TV did not work in room.
So peaceful because of the secluded location
Location
I told them need wheelchair access room they gave without wheelchair access than they gave room where tv doesn’t not work only one bed original it was two bed
What an amazing place in a stunning rural location. We loved all of the charming old features in side of the hotel. What a grand place to stay. Our room was comfortable, clean and spacious with a nice ensuite. All of the staff were exceptional in their roles. They were friendly, helpful and a pleasure to deal with. Dinner and breakfast were both really enjoyable with a decent choice of food available. We really enjoyed our stay and will look forward to returning soon.
Waterfall outside
Hotel in poor run down condition. Manager couldn't care less. Room filthy and un cared for
How polite the staff were
I thought the menu does not have a great selection me and the husband have to and eat out as we didn't like anything
The breakfast was stupendous!
TV reception wasn’t great.
Location
The access road needs resurfacing ++
Location good for motorway
Bathroom a little grubby and taps didn't have much pressure. Television didn't work properly. No coffee available with dinner
Nice clean room
Was to warm could do with air conditioning ☺️
I booked it for my son doing the coast to coast and he needed a break due to the extreme heat we are having. They helped him massively, with sun cream and helping him with a lift to the nearby town! Massive Thank you!
We have used this hotel as a stop off on our holidays from Edinburgh to the South and back quite a few times. The staff are very helpful and friendly. Fabulous stopover point
Would have liked to see the red squirrels again, but nature prevails.
Evening meal and breafast were great no complaints
Lift was out of order so had to use stairs, no problem but Ilive in a bungalow so not used to stairs still I managed.
All of it
Nothing I didn’t like
Perfect location for our needs.
I have been using this hotel for a few years and it now needs lots of love and investment, wishing the new owners lots of luck and happy times ahead. Some things l would expect at a hotel at this price point, and hopefully you may consider them. Some bottles of water in the room. A multi choice coffee machine in the main hotel as sachet/ instant coffee isn't appealing if staying more than one night.
Limited time for breakfast and dinner. Access road. Best to use access of A6
Fantastic location. Friendly and helpful staff!
Poor wi-fi.
The staff were really great, led by Shabeeh’s team. Our room was too hot and we were relocated to a much cooler room. The restaurant food was excellent - better than expected, and we were given a lift to Shap in the morning.
Sadly It’s a long way off the coast to coast walk & the internet was slow.
First- property is 6 km away from shap with no public transport Second- No hot water at all, not at night, not in morning, I boiled water in teapot to have a wash Third- unhelpful staff- I had breakfast included but with the hot weather I wanted to leave before it was ready at 730. Asked for a sandwich instead and they wanted 12.90 ( same price as breakfast). They would not give me credit for breakfast or a sandwich to go. Fourth- if you are not part of a bus tour you are a second class citizen- no food or service till bus tours are done. Had to wait until 8 pm for dinner though I started walking at 8 am
Poor service No hot water Felt like 2nd class after bus tours
Lovely staff very clean comfortable beds definitely be staying again.
All good.
Easy access to M6 . Staff were very helpful. Decor in public rooms stunning as 100+ years old and in art deco style. Good food. Easy parking. Rooms fairly modern
Lots of history but missed opportunity as bedrooms are very corporate. Big hotel. Lots of ground that could be landscaped to be beautiful but mostly in accessible at present.Have lots of coach parties to make ends meet. With investment could be stunning.
