Wonderful location, peaceful, amazing views, lovely walks from the hotel, spectacular views from the restaurant, pool and hot tub, great spa....I could go on - we had a fantastic couple of days and would definitely return
Tables sticky in the bar!
Beautiful, great staff, comfortable, lots to do
Fantastic location, very cozy, well maintained, everything was well thought out. We had a great stay and would definitely stay here again!
Nothing. Everything was perfect for us!
The cocktails were Amazing!
Shower was big and fancy but low water pressure and not practical because there was no place to put anything.
The settings, the views, the quiet
N/A
The location outside Winthrop is beautiful and convenient for entry into North Cascades National Park. I made a special request for a dinner reservation on our wedding anniversary, but Sun Mountain Lodge went above and beyond by providing a card and champagne - a lovely and unexpected touch. The onsite naturalist (Ray) was also fantastic.
It's not the hotel's fault, but I did learn that forest fires have caused the area to be smoky in August during most recent years. I don't recall mention of this on the booking site but it's very relevant information for potential guests with pulmonary conditions.
Not worth the price, extremely overpriced............................................................................
Location
Rooms old and outdated for the price, plus A/C could not be controlled. Even though they did move us to a new location, second room was no different. Restaurant & menu did not impress.
Layout was easy to use. View was beautiful.
Wonderful experience in an amazing place. Already planning to go back next year. The restaurant was great and our room was perfect. The views are to die for and lots to do nearby.
The view, the serenity, cleanliness, staff, and price!
Excellent location the restaurant food was most expensive have had for basic products. But staff superb very attentive. Parking can be a push to find near hotel but plenty on site. The views fabulous
The lodge is beautiful, but several service issues affected our stay. We experienced challenges with the dining room, including limited food options and inconsistent quality. Staff responses to our concerns were disappointing, and bar service was slow. At checkout, I requested an emailed receipt that never arrived. The property has great potential, but with non‑working pools and food service that needs improvement, it didn’t feel worth the cost at this time.
Location, stargazing, yummy breakfast with view, the pool.
The pool was wonderful.
The landscaping was beautiful
Sun Mountain Lodge has been a family tradition and annual vacation spot for over twenty years. We took a hiatus from visiting during Covid and this was our first year back after fifteen years in a row. What we found did not resemble the old world feel, and traditional experience of what we have always known it to be. I know that all things change over time, but this was a starkly unwelcome change. There is new management and they appear to not know what it is that made Sun Mountain such a magical place. It is a Hallow shell of what it once was. Less staff, less customer service and higher prices. The restaurant used to be Michelin quality and is now more expensive for a far less extravagant experience. The grounds and rooms are less well kept and it’s a shame. Unless they can figure out how to restore it to the quality it was just six years ago, we will be looking for a new “Sun Mountain” experience.
Beautiful location, hotel and room. Loved the atmosphere, sunsets from our room, ability to go hiking from our room with well groomed trails, the swimming pool with its flower beds, the mule deers every evening. Appreciated the peacefulness and stunning views of the North Cascades in the background
The view
The condition of facilities, the food was miserly. We ordered muscles and got 10!! The staff are all nice but poorly trained. The check in was looonnngggg.
We were disappointed by the dining, dated furnishings, and limited offerings at the "Adventure Shop". The spa was well-appointed and therapists provided quality service. The spa and well-kept grounds were the highlight of our stay but that would not be enough benefit to overcome the lackluster service and surroundings and entice me to return.
Beautiful area and views. Lots of outdoor recreation around. We were in a Mt Gardiner room and it was cozy and considerable.
Some maintenance issues in our room. Annoying to hear people’s dogs barking all the time. Some guests were loud and obnoxious.
Great view and hunting lodge setting. Nice amenities. Restaurant and bar were overpriced ($26 for a can of Pepsi and one draft beer). Our room had some maintenance issues: toilet was leaking and flushed every 3 - 5 minutes all night long. Smoke alarm battery was low and beeping, but instead of replacing the battery, they removed it altogether. Overall, nice place, not well-managed
Wonderful views, great staff. Peaceful and quiet location. Room is clean and well stocked.
Some maintenance overlooked, clean the handles/fridge on wet bar door(s). With this caliber of a hotel, I am expecting all the bathroom lights, the fan to work, as well as high touch surfaces to be clean.
We liked the property and location but found the service to be really lacking at this level of hotel and price point. The check-in experience was particularly poor -- unfriendly and unhelpful. We also had a problem with our room's door lock and it was handled incompetently. Sun Mountain Lodge needs better hires and better staff training at the Front Desk.
So glad to stay at this beautiful and relaxing place, with a great location for hiking and visiting Winthrop. The staff were very kind and friendly.
The peaceful and beautiful surroundings
The bed wasn’t very comfortable and the room got too warm overnight.
Everything about the Sun Mountain Lodge was incredible. The rooms, the view, the staff...everything! We had a wonderful stay and look forward to returning.
I asked two staff members questions about the facilities. All though the questions (or answers) weren’t a big deal they went out and asked people who knew. Nice effort and as one put it I’ll probably be asked again so good to know the answer now.
Poor communication
The view, game room, pool & hot tub.
I realize it is a place for peace and serenity but not having a TV was missed! When we went back to our room for the night, we would have loved to cuddle up and have watched a movie.
If you’re going to stay in the region, stay here. There are lots of things on the lodge grounds: Horses, fishing, boating, hiking. The trails are numerous and the views stunning. Brett at the Adventure Center set me up nicely for fly fishing on the lake here. You’re only 10 minutes from Winthrop and Twisp so that too is ideal. The hotel could use a little updating (mostly cosmetics) but it’s well maintained, clean, and welcoming. There are no TVs in the rooms so take that into mind. Didn’t really matter as I was so exhausted by day’s end I went right to bed. The restaurant holds a lovely view of the valley and the food is filling and tasty and the staff very kind. Not award winning, but more than adequate.
Already shared in the survey. Very disappointed. Run down and service was not good. The spa and our massages were not what we asked for. They chose their own way instead of listening to what areas we wanted to focus on and did not increase pressure even though we asked for it.
The room was spacious and comfortable. We staying in the Mt Robinson Building. The front desk was friendly. The restaurant was open with nice views. Food was a little overpriced and mediocre. You probably can get better meals in Winthrop. Close to North Cascades NP.
The views are superior, I liked the decor inside the hotel. The bathroom in our room was renovated recently. The furniture and the curtains could use some updating.Having a tea kettle and a coffee machine was definitely a plus, however we were surprised to not find a microwave in the room. The other downside was when I slipped on the step when entering the outside jacuzzi behind the main building. The steps are very slippery, I fell even though I was holding a railing. Later I witnessed more people slipping on the steps. Other than that we enjoyed our stay, easy drive to Winthrop to get meals.
Lovely lodge, beautiful scenery! We enjoyed our 4 nights at Sun Mountain Lodge. The location is perfect for exploring trails, small towns, lakes and rivers. Our room was spotless and had a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. Staff are friendly and accommodating. We will return!
We booked Sun Mountain as a weekend getaway with friends, deciding to splurge on the costly rate for a luxurious experience. Unfortunately, we left disappointed. First, check in is at 4pm. And they are strict about this. We drove 5+ hours and got there 90 minutes early. While the rooms were ready and available, we weren’t allowed to check in early….unless we were willing to pay $50. We opted to wait. After finally settling in, we decided to dine at the lodge. Service was very slow, beverages we ordered when we were first seated did not come until after dishes had been cleared and we were about to pay the bill. Some of our order didn’t show up at all (cocktails, even!). But since the food was simply not good and they weren’t listed on the bill, we didn’t have the energy to make a fuss. And I do sincerely mean the food was not good. No one in our party could say anything positive about their dishes. We had booked this lodge with the intent of taking full advantage of their two hot tubs. But we were informed that the hot tub at the main lodge was out of order. The second one, a short walk away, was open. We readied ourselves, walked to the second pool area only to find that hot tub halfway drained and full of dirt. We informed the front desk. Luckily their maintenance crew managed to get it repaired by the next afternoon, so we managed one short visit to the hot tub during our stay. The rooms are clean, but not very charming. The rooms aren’t attractively decorated, and quite honestly I have stayed at Holiday Inns with nicer furniture and decor. One of the couches in our room looked like it had a rougher go than my college futon from 25 years ago. Our friends found stains on their bedsheets and bathrobes in their room. The shampoo and shower gel bottles in our room didn’t work. Upon checkout, we were asked if we enjoyed our stay. We replied “it wasn’t great, and we do have some complaints.” Instead of asking for details, the front desk clerk basically gave us an “oh, well, that’s a shame,” and sent us on our way. The staff, while friendly, seemed to avoid fielding complaints or extending any meaningful remedies…or they aren’t empowered to do so. So I guess I have to air my complaints here. We spent a small fortune to stay at this hotel and got a 2-star experience. Which is such a shame. The ground and the views are AMAZING. And this lodge has so much potential to be a real posh experience. But whoever is managing this property is just doing it such a disservice.
Excellent service, great food and breathtaking views. Very comfortable and well thought out. Staff is very helpful and courteous, going above and beyond.
Wonderfully quite time to enjoy the Methow Valley. The game room was a chance to step back a few years to our youth. The restaurant exceeded our highest expectations.
Perfect place to wind down and celebrate my retirement !!! Beautiful views, an excellent, attentive staff who went out of their way to make our visit special ♥
Update: Both the GM and the food and beverage manager, were good enough to contact me personally to discuss the issues. Sun Mountain Is going through some restructuring as the result of new ownership and management. After talking with them, I now have full faith that they will turn this lodge around. Looking forward to a new updated version of their vision. *** 03/09/2026 Lodge was wonderful with great views, decor, a well appointed room (although at $550 a night, all in, the lodge should be able to afford 2 ply TP). Grandkids loved the onsite balloon pop-up. Staff was friendly and polite for the most part, but I believe a bit more training is necessary in order to provide the service an upscale lodge should provide. It was apparent they are understaffed throughout. I do want to give a shoutout to Tina, the dining supervisor who was engaging and friendly to the grandkids each time we came down for breakfast. Also I want to thank Rebecca for helping us retrieve my granddaughter’s lost ski jacket. Communication is an issue. We were located in the Mt. Robinson Building which is the furthest building from the main lodge. We depended on phone communications for requests and info. Calls to the front desk are forwarded to the dining room and the phone is never answered. I had to walk to the main lodge each time in order to get the simplest of answers or requests addressed. Might consider giving the front desk a cell phone for when they are away from the front desk. The dining experience needs to be addressed. The bar was never open when we came down. The dining options didn’t fit our needs. We were there as grandparents with a 13 year old and a 5 year. Adding interesting small plates and sandwiches to the dinner menu and maybe providing a snack bar would help. Avoid the Kids menu smash burger which we was our only option one night to eat in our room. The regular smash burger was great but it wasn’t offered one night. I did take a minute to sit with the Food and Beverage Director. He understood the issue. Later, I talked with dining staff who confirmed he had passed along my concerns. There needs to be a posting of which activities are available and which are not. We had a pool and hot tub next to our building but they were closed for the winter. We would have used the open hot tub at the main lodge, but there were no changing rooms. It turns out the ice rink they advertise is not on site, but in the town of Winthrop 18 minutes away. With the snow being a bit low it would have been nice to have some other organized activities for the kids. I really want to love this place. It has such potential. My exact same concerns have been voiced in a number of reviews and ownership has replied saying they would address the issues, but here we are with the same issues still a problem.
The Sun Mountain Lodge was the undisputed “grand-dame” lodging in the Methow Valley…..until now. We found the lodge tired, dated and in disrepair. Our room, a large king with fireplace and view was dirty on arrival. The wall had some kind of dirty smear, the curtain ring was torn, it smelled like burning dust on arrival. The HVAC wasn’t working correctly, we set the temperature to 70, it never got above 64. It would cycle on for for ten seconds, stop and then back on and then off………all night long. The following morning we checked out and lost another $300+ for an unused day. We just couldn’t handle it. There is no bell staff for bags, it’s a do it yourself operation. The hall was filthy. Perhaps the new owner will bring it back to the old standard, but until then - Avoid staying at the Sun Mountain Lodge.
Loved the lodge! So many fun things to do, great food, friendly staff. Hope to come back soon.
Location cannot be beat, cozy atmosphere, room Furnishings, large rooms
It’s a little tired and needs to be cleaned a bit better. For example, windows had kid hands and face marks on them. The hot tub was not warm enough at all. Many people commenting on this. It’s not been like that during prior visits
In all my travel experiences, fifty + years worth, I have never experienced such chaotic food services as I experienced during my new years eve trip last month. The details are too long an involved to go into, but suffice it to say in a three night stay, the evening meals two of the three nights were 2 hour almost comical mis-adventures. After the last meal, capped off by the smell of a rotten cleaning rag left on the table behind us (reeking of rotten fish) my wife and I just lost it laughing at the complete absurdity of the whole situation. Oh, and by the way, the food ain't cheap. After the first night, I would have eaten outside the lodge, but that is impractical as the closest restaurants are in Winthrop which is mostly closed in the evening and a pretty tough drive down slick roads and back. To be fair, the new years eve celebratory meal (at $105 PP) was pretty good and not chaotic. (I am told the lodge owners were dining there that evening which may have affected the service) The lodge itself is nice, although our room, a fireplace room in the Gardner lodge was pretty worn and dated. In my mind, this place is nowhere worth what they charge and the difficulty of getting there. The upscale lodges in Leavenworth are for better,
If you love great lodges of the west, such as Glacier NP lodges, or Timberline on Mt Hood, you will love this place! The craftsmanship of the building is inspiring and the many lounge, family and dining spaces gave our family an ability to all choose their own hang out spots. The dining options are delicious and were served with warm hospitality. Our favorite thing was having bison chilli in the bar area, which had a knockout spectacular view of the Methow Valley, and onward to the North Cascades. The elevation and surrounding nature set you up to xcountry ski right from the lodge. If you are looking for a place where you are on top of the world, this is the spot!
A very enjoyable stay. We had a room with a fireplace, balcony and a fabulous view. Very comfortable room. The sunset views against the mountain backdrop - fabulous. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food in the restaurant and lounge was good. We were visiting the area to hike the Northern Cascades National Park. The drive from the lodge to the park took between 30 & 45 minutes but was a pleasant drive with little traffic. Based on our experience, we highly recommend Sun Mountain Lodge when visiting this area.
The location is wonderful, with the best views of the Methow River Valley looking west, towards North Cascades National Park.
At dinner, I overheard a conversation at the table next to us; it was a special day and the two couples were looking forward to having a bottle of wine that they had brought with them—just for this occasion. Under normal circumstances, a ten or fifteen dollar corkage fee is to be expected. However, they were shocked (as was I) when the server told them the service fee to open their bottle of wine would be $35.00. There was a moment of awkwardness, some muted conversation, and then they declined. After the server walked away it was apparent that the positive energy at that table had dissipated. What should have been—what COULD have been—a memorable dinner had instead been marred by an ill-informed policy that, in my opinion, was less focused on elevating the guests' experience and more about driving sales for the lodge's wine cellar. Contrary to Gordon Gekko's opinion in the film Wall Street, greed isn't necessarily good.
Unpleasant Experience A far turn from Hospitality, management lacks empathy when guests seek options for reservation changes in a timely manner . Management had no desire to seek alternative accommodations that would meet both guest and management satisfaction.
Great location close to town and hikes off hwy 20.
Hotel was in a nice setting with great views. Restaurant was solid and friendly staff. Our room had a large stain on the floor, flickering bathroom lights, and blocked view so was not our favorite.
Previous occupant had smoked in room w/or emedial response by staff. Desk service did't provide WiFi info, requiring special trip Paid for room with viw, blocked by sofa and outside tree.
Horribly noisy cooling. Too large pillows. When I told the front desk they said "don't use the cooling or heating"
Amazing stay with beautiful views.Horse riding at sun mountain ranch highly recommended
מיקום נהדר ,עיצוב מיוחד ,כדאי לבוא ליומיים לפחות כדי להנות ממה שהמלון מציע
Smoke and the T-shirt I needed to replace was not available in the gift shop
Lovely views
Loved it
Very Impressive place. Service was great, restaurant was very good too.
Sun Mountain Lodge is one of our favorites. So beautiful.
Over priced restaurant
Although it’s a few miles away from Winthrop, it is well worth the extra miles to be in such a beautiful setting surrounded by nature!
Super clean, comfortable beds, fantastic restaurant, friendly service, beautiful views
Great resort with wonderful scenery.
The pool!! Beautiful!!
Service at restaurant was slow. Food was just ok. Paid for top notch and got mediocre. Really felt the food was overpriced. The amenities were good and the staff friendly but restaurant was a huge disappointment. We would recommend if you have extra money, but seems like they have some room for improvement to be top notch.
Check in process was cumbersome. We checked in too late to provide an adequate description of the property. It was definitely more out of the way than we had thought.
Check-in / Operations • I received a “how was your check-in?” email before arrival, which suggests weak coordination between systems and staff. • At the desk, the prefilled registration showed two nights instead of one. Staff could not correct it in the system and asked me to sign anyway, assuring it would be fixed later. This is not acceptable for billing accuracy or guest confidence. Room • View: Good only when standing on the balcony. The room’s window panes are fogged/blind, significantly diminishing visibility. • Noise: On the balcony, constant noise from an HVAC unit; using the balcony menat noise exposure, staying inside meant looking through foggy windows. And you can hear every step of the guests in the room above. • Condition: Furnishings are worn and feel low-quality (loose, rattling wood pieces). • Bed: The mattress is excessively soft, creating a noticeable depression and leading to poor sleep quality. • Overall impression: at least a decade of deferred maintenance. Restaurant • Windows are partially fogged, again affecting the otherwise good outlook. • Wine availability: Listed Washington Riesling (half bottle) was unavailable; we were informed after the starter was finished. A subsequent red wine order arrived with the wrong bottle from the correct winery (as the other one was unavailable also (the winecellar is a "maze" we learned). • Food: Pappardelle overcooked; burrata was good; chicken average. • Cleanliness: Carpet visibly soiled; fabric chairs appear not to have been deep-cleaned for a long time. Price / Value • Rate was over $400 per night. Given the room condition, operational issues, and dining shortcomings, the property represents very poor value at this price point. Bottom line This stay was marked by maintenance deficits, service disorganization, and inconsistent food & beverage execution. Until the hotel addresses window replacement, room refurbishments (especially mattresses and furniture), staff training for accurate check-in, reliable wine list availability, and a thorough cleaning program, you should not book — even less at current rates.
We asked to cancel multiple times due to the wildfires since I have severe asthma. We also requested a refund. Expedia said they sent the request and were following up. Sun Mountain Lodge said they didn’t get it. Expedia never followed up with me. Sun Mountain Lodge refused a refund.
Very gorgeous views. Unfortunately didnt get a chance to use the spa as we had a busy trip but looked amazing.
We enjoyed our one night here but the lodge room was not to our liking. It was in need of a refresh and the couch/hideabed cover was in need of replacement or to just go away. We were fit to be able to move to a room (115) in one of the out buildings which had a nice deck although a queen bed. This room was much more spacious but the chairs were worn and tattered and the metal light fixture over the table was too low due to poor placement and was a safety hazard for tall people. Overall, the buildings are worn, the decking and wooden walkways worn and what used to be rustic are now worn out. We have been going here through the years since the 1999s and although it still has charm and is well located for gorgeous views it is in need of some additional investment to bring it up to a better standard.
This hotel did not live up to its potential. The setting and views are incredible, but the hotel is a bit run-down. The carpet in our room was stained and dirty. There were no blankets available. The tea pitcher did not work. The beds were just average. The restaurants were good with excellent service. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, mostly due to the setting, but this hotel needs updating.
Great weekend get away for a relaxing time.
Wonderful resort near Winthrop!
Very remote mountain top conference center. Clean nice staff. Views beautiful. Food was ok but a little pricey. Only ate once in the 2 night stay.
View from our room was the parking lot even though we booked a “valley view”. Food was average and way too fancy. Room was comfy but no tv. Spa was totally booked.😖
No stress
The reception staff was very friendly as were the servers in the restaurant and bar. However, for the most part, our stay was very average to poor from that point on. Problems: Fridge was not plugged in, ice machine was very dirty, the breakfast, which in past had been amazing, was not great. Lastly, the last time we stayed, between 4 and 5 years ago, we communicated that the furniture was not comfortable and were informed that it was being addressed. It hasn't. Since the air quality was poor we stayed inside wanting to relax and read but were terribly uncomfortable. Additionally, the bed could use a refresh as well. My wife did like the pillows though.
Great dinner with exceptional views and outstanding servuce
No tv, so was nice and relaxing
Food was great.
Not enough staff. Housekeeping not good and security poor. Doors and locks were awful!
Sun Mountain lodge is a truly one of a kind property. It is a bit off from Winthrop, but that adds to the charm. Very self contained and has lots of things to do … or relax doing absolutely nothing. The rooms are really nice and the place has great 360 degree views. Overall service was excellent as well. We were unlucky to visit during the early Sep 2025 fires in the cascades but still had a great time. The onsite restaurant is ok (see my review on that) but besides that, all 5 out of 5 for this unique property
Many things to do. Staff very helpful. We ate dinner at the restaurant and it was excellent. Very relaxing place to enjoy
Location - beautiful mountain scenery and walking trails nearby. Games and activity options ( e.g. biking, horseback riding, pickleball) on site. Room is spacious, and beds are comfortable. Friendly and helpful staff
There is no TV in the room. The food options are expensive. It is about 9-10 miles to Winthrop town center.
We splurged for two nights in a "deluxe" cabin, for $1000 a night. We were taken aback when we walked in -- aside from the fact that the cabin (611) looked like it hadn't been updated since the 1980's, food from the prior guests was left out and there were flies EVERYWHERE. We had to cover our cups when eating inside to prevent flies from going into our drinks. It was really run down and gross. Management was unresponsive to our concerns during our stay.
This is a beautiful resort and probably the highlight of my trip to Washington State. I will say that there were some very small things that I noticed that were indicators that the resort may not be kept up as it should. I noticed that there were tears in the window screen that really looked tacky for a high end resort. Also the heavy pull curtains were all black and dirty looking. This too was something that was surprising. I think the worst thing was the constant noise of the AC and fan. It sounded like a truck running continuously and when the AC would kick in I felt like a plane was taking off. I realize that this resort is older but some people are very sensitive to noise and especially constant. We also had no control over the temperature and our room was very cold which was fine with me but my husband was freezing. Food was good but the menu didn’t change so we had little to choose from. But I will finish by saying that it was very beautiful and we really enjoyed walking the gardens. Also we found that all of the staff that we interacted with were super friendly and polite.
Front desk personnel were less than friendly. We arrived about an hour before the official check in time of 4. Not at all surprised that a room wasn’t ready, but staff didn’t offer to store our luggage, just said we were ‘welcome to hang out’, and they would text when room was ready. When I returned (at 4:30), after never receiving any text message, I was asked again to produce id and credit card and when I mentioned that I had already done so the clerk said, she didn’t care and that she wasn’t giving a key to anyone without going thru the whole process…again. Staff in the bar were lovely.
Sun Mountain Lodge is fantastic. Great stopover location between North Cascades National Park and The Okanagan Valley in British Columbia. Room was comfortable, food delicious and my wife enjoyed a spa day while I went fly fishing. Booked half day fishing trip thru the lodge with Outdoor Adventures. My guide, Derek, was great. His knowledge of the river, the fish and his patience with my limited fly fishing skills made for a great day of fishing and an even better day of catching.
We adore it here! Thé setting is stunning- the stillness, quiet, nature trails, the grounds, not a miss. The staff are spectacular — inviting and kind. The food & beverages are excellent— intentional about dietary restrictions such as gluten free and vegetarian. The rooms are clean & comfortable.
Not a dislike and the chairs in the room & on room balcony could be more comfortable for prolonged sitting to read & enjoy the beautiful natural setting.
This was my fourth time at Sun Mountain Lodge (2002, 2005, 2022 and 2025). It's one of my favorite places. Nestled on a hilltop above the beautiful Methow Valley, the lodge has great views of the North Cascades to the west. The grounds are beautiful. The food is excellent, and the staff is very helpful. It's within striking distance of some of the best hiking in the US. I've spent some of my favorite vacations here, and I hope to return.
