We had a wonderful stay at Kamesei Ryokan and really enjoyed experiencing a traditional Japanese ryokan and the lovely onsen town of Togura-Kamiyamada. Tyler, Andy and the whole team were incredibly welcoming and made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. The ryokan has so much character, the onsen was a great experience, and we especially loved taking the rental bikes out to explore the surrounding countryside and rice fields. The onsen baths and the gourmet meals were another memorable part of our stay. We travelled as a family with four children and found Kamesei Ryokan very family-friendly. Everyone was so kind and welcoming to the kids, and we all felt very comfortable throughout our stay. It was one of those places that gave us a real sense of Japan beyond the bigger cities and made our time in Nagano particularly special. We would happily stay again and definitely recommend Kamesei Ryokan to other families travelling in Japan.
The staff was really nice and easygoing and they gave us a lot of great recommandations for activities. The food was also really good and we were well advised when we wanted to try some local sake. Our time at the Kamesei Ryokan was one of our highlights of our trip.
It would be nice to have a chair in the outdoor area of the onsen.
We stayed two nights at Kamesei Onsen and wish we had booked for longer. From start to finish to was a wonderful and special time. The beautiful historic inn provides a glimpse into times past, the rooms are large and comfortable, the onsen amazing and the food was as good as any high end Japanese restaurant. Tyler, Mari and Andy made us feel welcome from the first moment. We spent two days hiking and exploring local sights and there was so much more to see. Highly recommended.
We had a wonderful stay at Kamesei Ryokan. Tyler, Mari and Andy were great hosts and we can’t recommend staying here highly enough. We are a family of 4 with 2 teenagers and found lots to do in the local area. Returning to a warm welcome, fantastic food and the onsen bath after a day of sightseeing was brilliant. Thank you Kamesei Ryokan!
Liked The host family interaction The genuine Ryokan experience The authentic building and setting and meals The pickup and drop off at the local station A great introduction to bathing at onsens
Nothing ... All perfect

Tyler is an awesome host
This family run ryokan is what I've fantasized a family friendly, foreigner and tattoo friendly experience could be like! Tyler, Mari and Andy are sincere earnest individuals and treated me and my family like special guests. We were fortunate to watch a geisha show, enjoy a kaiseki dinner and dip in the relaxing onsen water. Highly recommend and would absolutely go again!
The accommodation was wonderful and exceeded all our expectations. Everything was clean, tidy, and well organized. The staff was always helpful and available whenever needed, and the breakfast was served in traditional Japanese style. There is also a real onsen, including facilities suitable for families. I promised myself that I would come back with my family because the experience was truly amazing. I highly recommend it.
My two friends and I had an absolutely incredible stay at Kamesei Ryokan, and we can't recommend it highly enough — especially for first-time ryokan guests! From the moment we arrived, the family-run atmosphere made us feel completely at home. Owner Tyler was so welcoming and took the time to walk us through everything — how the ryokan works, the onsen etiquette, what to expect — which was invaluable for us as ryokan newcomers. His wife Mari and their son Andy were equally warm, attentive, and genuinely helpful throughout our stay. Our tatami mat room was beautiful and authentically Japanese, and the gardens were absolutely stunning. The onsen facilities were wonderful — clean, well-maintained, and deeply relaxing. Kamesei is tattoo-friendly, which put us at ease. The food was excellent. Both breakfast and dinner were exceptional — fresh, local, beautifully presented, and delicious. We'd also recommend grabbing one of Andy's coffees while you're there! The family also helped us discover great local spots for food and activities when we weren't soaking in the onsen, and the inn's location made it easy to explore the charming Togura-Kamiyamada area. Getting there from Tokyo was straightforward, and we also had time to explore nearby Nagano. We've already been raving about Kamesei Ryokan to all our friends and would love to return. If you're looking for an authentic, welcoming, and tattoo-inclusive ryokan experience, this is the place!
Staying here was my favorite part of our 16 day trip to Japan. Chikuma was gorgeous with plenty of walking and biking options for those who enjoy nature but not the crowds. We went to Kamikochi afterwards and wished we had spent those nights back at Kamesei Ryokan instead. Our room was spacious and beautiful, and what's not to like about soaking in the onsen three times a day. All of the meals we had were memorable and delicious and the Kamesei team made sure we had everything we needed. Thank you again!

Rien ! On aurait aimé pouvoir rester plus longtemps !
A beautiful old Onsen Ryokan right in the middle of the town. Nice big traditional rooms and authentic interior. The outdoor bath was perfect and had just the right temperature.
WiFi would be nice to have. Parking can be a bit crowded.
Tyler, Mari, Andy and Mio were great hosts. Their hospitality and customer service is beyond par. After a long day of outdoor activities, Kamesei Ryokan is a wonderful place to relax while immersed in the hotel’s onsen (hot spring). Of course, it is worth mentioning the delectable traditional Japanese breakfast and dinner served at the hotel. Hontō ni oishikatta desu! Chikuma is a very quiet and peaceful place as a getaway from the busy overcrowded cities like Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. We will surely stop by and stay again here on our next visit to the north-northeastern part of Japan.

This small family-run inn is a beautiful ryokan in a sweet onsen village. The facilities are fantastic, the food amazing and the hospitality the best I experienced in the 3 weeks I spent in Japan this time. If you have the chance, work this one in to your itinerary. You won’t be sorry! (Be sure to ask them about their recommendations)
Our stay at this ryokan was one of the absolute highlights of our trip to Japan. Everything was very well organized — the information on the website was clear, the pickup from and return to the train station was very convenient, and the staff explained everything in excellent English, so we always felt comfortable and well taken care of. The dinner and breakfast were outstanding, and the private onsen experience was truly special and relaxing. We would highly recommend this ryokan to anyone looking for an authentic and memorable stay in Japan. 5/5 experience!
We had such a lovely stay at Kamesei Ryokan - it was truly the highlight of our trip to Japan. The town itself is an onsen destination, and the baths inside the ryokan were wonderful. The Kaiseki style food at the hotel was also incredible. One person in our group is vegetarian, and even she said it was some of the best vegetarian food she’s ever had. Considering the quality of the experience, the price was very reasonable. The ryokan is nestled between the mountains and countryside. One evening, we went out for udon at a small local restaurant, and it felt like eating in my grandmother’s home. I wish we would have spent more time at the Ryokan and in this town. Thank you for the wonderful experience Tyler and family.
Wonderful ryokan with the best staff. I felt really welcomed here and it's been nothing but impressive how staff cared about us. Also the switch between men's and women's onsen at night was greatly appreciated, so everybody could enjoy both baths.

My wife and I stayed at the Kamesei Radokan hotel wit our 2 oldest sons for just 1 night but it qas a stay to never forget. Very authentic Japanish venue, meals and hospitality. Absolutely the highlight of our 17 days tour through Japan.
The owner, the landlady, and everyone at the ryokan were very warm and welcoming in their communication, making it a place I would love to return to. When I visit Nagano again, I would definitely like to stay at Kamesei Ryokan.
10 out of 10 place to stay, 100% satisfaction guaranteed Good Onsen, nice comfortable room 👍👍👍👍 Thumbs up to oeners & staff Dinner is a must do…
Prima personeel Aanrader, zeker het dineren
Alles was OK
The entire ryokan looked and felt really good. The room was beautiful, the food was delicious and the Onsen was so nice and well-maintained. Mari, Tyler and Andy anticipated my every need (even some I didn’t know I needed like booking an in-room Shiatsu massage and a Za Zen session at a temple with the monk!) I loved that it’s been family-run for generations and it was helpful for me that they spoke English as well as Japanese. My time at Kamisei Ryokan was definitely a highlight of my three weeks in Japan.

We loved our room, traditional Japanese style, the yukatas and the hotel's own onsen baths
There was only cold water in the room sink
Very welcoming and family friendly

The atmosphere of the Kamesei Ryokan is warm and quiet as a family of 4 we enjoyed our stay.
Tyler and Marie made our short stay in Nagano prefecture one of the highlights of our trip. I highly suggest ordering the dinner and breakfast option; the food was amazing and unlike anything we had tried before.
We had a wonderful time with Tyler and Mari. Wonderful room, lovely spaces, the meals were amazing very unexpected and much appreciated. Local, cuisine, fresh produce. The onsen was great especially the outdoor onsen that we sat in and watched while it rained! Tyler and Mari are great hosts picked us up from the train station, responded to all of our questions etc. we felt truly relaxed after a few days in Tokyo. Thank you both very much
A lovely, quiet place to stay with welcoming hosts, wonderful food, relaxing facilities (the private onsen is awesome), and large rooms. The surrounding town is full of cute and yummy local restaurants and its only a short train ride from central Nagano. We would love to stay here again.
We had an absolutely wonderful stay at this ryokan. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with such genuine warmth and hospitality. We were pleasantly surprised that there was a playroom suitable for kids of different age in the ryokan. The food was a highlight of our stay — beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Communication was also incredibly easy as Tyler and Mari-san both speak English. They were always happy to answer questions, explain the dishes, and offer recommendations. If you’re looking for an authentic ryokan experience with exceptional service, amazing food, and welcoming hosts, this is the place. We would absolutely love to return.
The experience was authentic. The meals were incredible and unique. One of a kind experience!
It's cold in the winter. Make sure you have layers to bundle up!
Hosts Tyler and Mari were wonderful and looked after us. It was our first visit to an Onsen town and they took the time to explain how to bath in an onsen, wear a yukata and activities around Chikuma. We also decided to include dinner as well as breakfast and both were delicious. Highly recommended. Also a big thank you for Tyler for going out of his way to post to us a necklace my daughter left in the room. It wasn't straight forward as we were travelling in Japan but Tyler was able to co-ordinate the posting so we could pick it up in Tokyo. We had such a lovely time and will recommend Kamesei Rykon to all of our friends.
It was such a positive experience that I don't have anything negative to say.
Whenever I plan to come to Nagano, I'm always compelled to stay at Kamesei Ryokan. From the warm hospitality of Tyler and Mari-san to the delicious local cuisine, I always have so much to look fondly on when I get back home. And of course the onsen is the best, to put it simply. I hope that when I come back to Nagano, I can finally convince my family to come here. - Chris
The owners were really friendly, warm and welcoming. The room was clean and comfortable for 4 people. Overall, a nice place to stay when visiting Nagano and we enjoyed our stay here :)
My husband and I stayed for two nights at Kamesei Ryokan. This is the first time we're staying at Ryokan and doing Onsen so we don't have any clue on what's going to be like. But Tyler and his wife made us comfortable during our stay there. Not to forget how GREAT the breakfast and dinner was. (Please don't forget to get the package for dinner and breakfast, you won't regret!)
A beautiful and welcoming stay. We loved the experience and the warmth of welcome extended by the proprietors and the whole town.
My second visit to Kamesei Ryokan was excellent. With its own onsen this ryokan offers travellers an authentic experience, being treated warmly by the owners and staff. Especially for a solo traveler like me that makes all the difference . Besides the onsen bath, the dinner and breakfast are a treat, combined favorite dishes with unique ones. Tyler gave me great tips, like the strawberry farm and mountain side temple in the area. Looking forward to come back next time.
Fantastic hospitality! A traditional ryokan experience with onsens. Highly recommend! The room is quite comfortable. And the food is prepared by a professional chef.
The whole experience made it feel like an immersive traditional Japanese experience. Beautiful decoration, facilities were outstanding and the rooms was amazing. Our hosts went out of their way to make us feel at home.
Can’t think of anything negative during my stay.
Our family absolutely enjoyed this family-run ryokan. The owner picked us up and dropped us off from the local train station. The service, the food, the decor, and the room were all excellent. The down-duvet they used was really warm and comfortable; we were even asking where to buy it. The onsen was not big, well-equipped and not crowded at all. If we had a chance, we would definitely return again!
We had such a wonderful time. Mari and Tyler, as well as their staff are so kind and are always thinking of new ways to bring exposure to authentic cultural experiences. The building is well kept, and you can feel how much they love this place. Every evening it felt like I was introduced to a new room and a new surprise waiting around the corner. The baths are well maintained and so very comfortable. Tip of the hat to the chef, my newly wed wife and I left not a grain of rice leftover the food was so incredible. The price for what you are getting is a superb value, and the town and surrounding location is an absolute delight to explore. We can't wait to be back! You will find it so easy to relax. Much love to you all, thank you for making our honeymoon such a a special experience! Will + Nat
We stayed 2 nights and experienced everything that we wished for. Soaked into a garden of tranquility, enjoyed private onsen time, shabu shabu dinner, healthy Japanese style breakfast, and convenient shuttle service. Truly a satisfying experience.
Dinner was amazing.

Staff was extremely friendly. The woman at the front desk (so mad I forgot to ask her for her name) literally called resturants to make sure they were open and offered food I could eat with my allergy restrictions. There are two baths one was outside and one was inside. Both were so nice almost fell asleep inside ! The room was super cute and the traditional bed was nice and comfy. I was scared it was going to be chilly but between the bath, heater, and comforter I slept like a baby :D. They also gave us a free ride to the train station as well as offer free pick up from 3 - 5 pm. Tyler was also had excellent communication via email .

Tyler and his wife were very kind and helpful throughout our stay. We stayed in a traditional Japanese room with futons, with breathtaking views of the mountains and garden. The ryokan offers indoor, outdoor and private onsen, and we tried them all. The town is quiet and peaceful. When I got sick, Tyler kindly brought me medicine, no matter how late it was. We also enjoyed a Geisha performance with dance, music and games. The next morning’s Japanese breakfast was delicious. Overall, it was a relaxing and memorable stay. Highly recommended, and we will definitely return.

Stay here! This is a beautiful family owned and run traditional ryokan. Moving onto its 4th generation owners very soon with Andy! My partner and I are both Australian with very little ability to speak Japanese (hello and thank you). Tyler (current owner) made this experience so much more accessible for us as he provided so much knowledge and hospitality while speaking fluent English. We really wanted a traditional experience away from the crowds and this was exactly that. The town as a whole is an onsen town. Traditionally this is where Japanese families come to holiday during the colder months. Tyler mentioned 95% of the towns visitors are Japanese with 75% of his accomodation also being Japanese. Perfect for those who want to get away from the crowds and see something truely special. We didn’t realise the whole town is built around onsens. There are public foot baths along the street for anyone to use and the accomodation having their own is perfect. You will need to share the onsens with other guests but there aren’t many rooms so it is never busy. We did opt to get the private family bath at night room and for my partner and I it was great. Neither of us have used onsens before and were cautious to be naked in front of others so this made the whole experience a lot more relaxing. We used it at night and in the morning before anyone else. There is a small gate through the back of the room so it was very private. We never thought sleeping on a tatami mat and futon would be comfortable but it really was! And super warm thanks to the gas heater. We included dinner and breakfast and it was delicious, very traditional but very worth it if you are willing to try something different. (See photos) the steak was also incredible and huge! We only stayed one night which worked perfectly for our itinerary as we used it as a stop off before skiing in Shiga Kogen but would have enjoyed another night or more for sure. You could spend a while exploring and relaxing in the sleepy town. No IC card (Suica/ICOCA) on the trains so be sure to have cash. Tyler did pick us up and drop us off which was lovely and greatly appreciated. You can tell there has been a lot of time and effort pored into this ryokan and we really appreciate everything the family has done so thank you for making it a great experience. Tyler also treated us to some home baked cookies, warm apple cider by the fire and a taste of sake for dinner, all of which were lovely. We would definitely come back here again and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a unique, relaxing, beautiful and traditional experience. Thank you Tyler and thank you to your family for making us feel so welcomed. Andy you were lovely to meet as well and best of luck moving forward.
The whole Ryokan was super authentic and unusually spacious for Japan. From pick up at the station to assisting us with meals at a local restaurant, Tyler and Mari were exceptional. The design of the outdoor onsen is great and the fact you can book it for exclusive use is a huge bonus.
Only two minor things. The Onsens cold have been hotter but that's a personal preference, and a vending machine for drinks and or snacks would have been handy.
We had a fantastic time at Kamesei Ryokan. The main reason that we came to this area was to visit the Snow Monkeys, but we would have liked to have stayed longer. We enjoyed the walk from the train station to the ryokan, the welcoming atmosphere of the common area, the games room, the onsens, the extra washrooms, the restaurants nearby and the atmosphere in the town with the lit lanterns at night. We especially appreciated that Tyler sat with us upon our arrival to get to know us and offer advice on what to do and where to eat. He drove us to the train station in the morning to catch our train to get to the Snow Monkeys and also drove us with our luggage. He was great at sharing the culture with us: teaching us about properly dressing for the onsen, having shoes for guests to wear outdoors (and slippers for indoors), including us in a game in the evening and teaching us a dance. We really enjoyed being invited to have a cup of apple cider each evening with the other guests. One of the coolest things we saw on our trip through Japan was the FamilyMart with a 'foot onsen' in the parking lot. People were all lined up on benches soaking their feet. Amazing! Our best sleeps of our trip were at Kamesei Ryokan - thank you for the lovely stay.
Beautiful traditional Japanese hospitality. Spotlessly clean, wonderful food, and a natural onsen (complete with sulphur aroma!). Gorgeous tatami rooms with paper walls, which were comfortable and warm. Breakfast was amazing! Tyler and Maru were fabulous hosts and we so enjoyed our stay. Tyler even helpfully picked us up and dropped us back to the train station.
