The most comfortable bed we have ever slept in in any hotel. Very high-quality breakfast, lovely part of the world to stay in.
Quite difficult to find the way into the building later at night and uncertain where to park. Unable to get the overhead shower to a hot temperature but unsure if the hotel we were even aware that this was broken so we just advised them as we were leaving. Other shower connected to the bathroom worked well. Obviously a lovely hotel but perhaps more than we would’ve normally spent just to put our head down after a concert.
Lovely, old hotel with a history.
Bar staff were either not trained or were unable to understand the drinks request.
Location and layout of the old part of the house. Lovely decor. Comfortable bedrooms. The staff are all very pleasant but a bit thin on the ground.
The Bistro is nice new idea for summer months but I cant see guests wanting to go out in the rain and snow just to have dinner. It’s a little cramped and not nearly as comfortable as the internal dining room where breakfast is held. Certainly for winter , that would seem a much better choice for dinner too.
We were warmly welcomed by Ian, and were made to feel very welcome with our dog. We were able to eat with our dog at the 'Strawberry Fields' restaurant in the covered patio area which was very comfortable. The food was excellent and service equally excellent. Breakfast was served to us in the 'conservatory' area where the staff made a table up for us and the dog was allowed to be with us as well. Room was very comfortable and we appreciated the door which led out onto a semi private garden. We did not need to leave our dog in the room at all, which is what we had expected we would need to do based on the info on booking.com. On contacting the hotel in advance they assured us we would be able to be located an area to have the dog with us when eating. I had not appreciated the history of the property, which is fascinating. Also the grounds are extensive, and outstanding, which was a treat in itself to be able to walk around the grounds, which was like walking back in time, and exploring a secret garden. The bar offers a wide selection on single malt whiskey, and for a non whisky drinker, they are of high quality as I went in for more than one! :)
It would have been really nice to take the dog inside the Strawberry Fields Restaurant, which in the winter months would be necessary to escape the coldness of eating outside. However we had a lovely stay here and would definitely stay again.
We stayed in a beautifully historic property, and the sense of age carried right through to the furnishings. The antique furniture was not only lovely to look at but genuinely comfortable, and the fireplaces made for cosy spots to settle into with a book at the end of the day. Walking the grounds was good for the soul. There is a flower garden, a river, and a small stretch of woodland, all of it peaceful and easy to lose an hour in. My adult daughters enjoyed the place so much that we never made it into the village at all, which says a great deal about how content we were simply staying put. Breakfast and high tea deserve a mention of their own. Both were beautifully presented and genuinely delicious, and they fitted the character of the house perfectly.
PARFAIT
Rien, nous avons adoré cet hôtel
Lovely hotel in lovely in Lovely village. We were thoroughly spoilt in beautiful hotel and grounds.
Nothing except a slightly cramped room A well set out room in a tricky space.
Very peaceful, comfortable bed, friendly staff
Nothing
Beautiful house with amazing history
Nothing
Dirty and poor
Staff great, history of hotel was fascinating and told really well by the night porter Alex ... what an interesting place
Nothing really
The grounds are fabulous
Breakfast was awful
Excellent manager and staff. Excellent location Excellent breakfast.
Nothing
We loved our room, the grounds, the aromstic smoky wood burning fire and the hospitality. The breakfast was superb. The best breakfast of our 5 nights in Scotland. Ian the General Manager was fantastic, checking us in, showing us around and engaging in great conversation. Andrew was very attentive as well and recommended where to visit locally the next day. Andrew we did go to Doune and we were given detailed information on the pistols. Ian we spoke to Mrs Kerr, the son's mother this evening at The Canny Man's. Thank you for taking the time in making us feel so welcome. We really enjoyed our stay.
Wonderful place. Good atmospherics and lovely architecture which makes it very special. Excellent rooms and substantial quality breakfast. Brilliant venue for any special occasion
All good.
Very relaxing
Lovely location, room & breakfast
The old historical aspect of the hotel

Arrived early to a very warm welcome, this being our last night of a 7 night tour of Scotland. We were lucky enough to be given a free upgrade. Check in was very easy really chatty and friendly staff. Room was stunning with a door leading out to the garden perfect for our Dog getting In And out without coming downstairs or going through reception. Gorgeous lounge areas with real fires to sit and relax. Ate lunch in the conservatory as this is the only place you can go with your dog, The grounds are stunning beautiful to walk around and not far from main road with shops. Evening meal was in the bistro outside again only place you can take your dog it was a bit chilly but blankets are provided Amazing food, beautifully presented. All the staff we met were amazing very friendly and chatty and showed a genuine interest. Spoke to them on check out as we had to eat breakfast in the conservatory and although beautifully presented the table is low to eat. We shared our 1 issue with having nowhere to sit and relax with your dog and they seemed to genuinely take our point on board. We would definitely return
Only downside out of the 4 rooms, bar , 2 lounges and a conservatory you can only sit in the conservatory with your dog.
Beautiful house. Beautiful gardens. Great position.
The hotel is situated in the beautiful town of Callendar. Very quaint and newly refurbished, this quirky pink hotel is a great place to stay.
It was unfortunate that although advertised as dog friendly, dogs are not actually permitted in any area of the hotel except the bedroom. We were not able to dine in the restaurant but staff kindly set us a table in the pretty conservatory to have breakfast.
It was a beautiful house in lovely grounds and the food was exceptional
The lock to my room was a bit worrying - I just wasn’t sure it was secure
Professioneel, vriendelijk personeel.
Very historic /Wonderful grounds with walks on property along the river /Good restaurant on premises
Small rooms due to age (1625!) building itself needs more maintenance and updating
A very well looked after property & grounds. The hotel and room were spotless, the staff were fantastic and very helpful, and the food was delicious. I would like to stay here again if visiting the area.
Nothing to dislike.
Beaucoup de charme
Tout Environnement superbe Décor à l ancienne charmant Restaurant excellent et à prix modéré Petit dej impeccable Bref aucune critique C est tellement rare aujourd’hui J y retournerai volontiers pour plusieurs nuits
Rien
Prachtig landhuis. Knus, en intiem. Mooie ruimtes en ruime kamer. Grote badkamer met bubbelbad. Uitstekend ontbijt.
We waren snel klaar. Jammer. Kwaliteit was wel goed, maar weinig sfeer.
Absolutely charming hotel, friendly staff. Good breakfast and great restaurant
Excellent breakfast and excellent service and the hotel had lovely open fires which was most welcoming
Nothing
The whole ambience was lovely and staff very friendly and helpful
The second night's dinner was virtually a replica of the previous night so I had the vegetarian option and it was very disappointing. Not good enough to change only one option for each course if clients are staying more than one night! Also, we are having extreme difficulty obtaining a VAT receipt for our stay. When asked at the hotel, they said the receipt would be issued by Booking.com. Can you please check this out for us. yours sincerely, Anne Forrest
Everything - the Roman Camp is quite simply our favourite hotel in Scotland. The setting, furnishings, staff, food, everything - are impeccable!
Having to leave! The hotel has just been sold and we are hoping that the new owners maintain the look and feel of the place - it is truly unique and it’s impossible not to relax the moment you get there!
Friendly management and hotel staff. Great breakfast.
Love this hotel, lots of character.
Great location. Lovely old building. Good breakfast. Staff friendly and helpful throughout. Bedroom comfortable and clean.
Nothing
Just the most comfortable but quaint environment. So many nooks and crannies in a wonderful old building which has grown over hundreds of years and such beautiful grounds. And great staff! Thank you Danny, Charlotte and Matthew
The weather!!
We were there for a couple days to attend a wedding. Beautiful ornate historic building: the gardens, drawing room and library are really something else. Standard rooms are spacious, mostly in good taste, the bed is comfortable, overall quiet.
Nothing was terrible, but the quality doesn't feel like it fully matches the price; it feels a bit like it's living on its past glory. Things were not very clean - lots of lint on the carpet, dust on the tea set, the skylight in the bathroom was half covered in grime. Parts of the room furniture and the bathroom felt dated (as in, remade in the 80/90s and aged poorly, rather than feeling luxe and chic like the rest of the hotel). The bistro food was very forgettable.
Very warm welcome, beautifull garden and building and interior. Diner at the bistro next door. Great experience.
Beautiful building and gardens. Perfect location for exploring Callander and the surrounding area. Rooms were large and furnished in keeping with the style and age of the building. Bed was extremely comfortable and jacuzzi bath was an added touch of luxury. Potting Shed Bistro was a perfect spot for a romantic, yet relaxed dinner and food was fantastic.
Nothing.
A lovely country house hotel with excellent communal rooms.
Our room felt a little cramped probably due to trying to fit modern conveniences and comfort into a 17th century building.
Real country house. So peaceful, great food ,great staff
Breakfast always outstanding.
Nothing .
The hotel was beautiful from top to bottom, and our room was exceptionally spacious. Dan was an exceptional host who made us feel so welcome and took care of every detail. He always pointed us to the room with the best spot for pre- and after-dinner drinks in one of the beautifully decorated common areas, and the best spot for dinner. There was always a roaring fire going in every room. We really felt like we were living the high life here!! :)
Nothing - everything was outstanding.
A fascinating hotel steeped in history. The team was welcoming and professional. The downstairs lounges were beautiful and luxurious with open fires. The suite was pretty special. Gorgeous setting and gardens next to the river. Breakfast was great and service excellent.
Nothing
Beautiful setting, our room was lovely and staff so helpful we look forward to staying again
Romantische locatie. Gastvrij personeel en uitstekende keuken. Diner is voortreffelijk; maar reserveer vooraf!
Verouderd sanitair.
Comfort as if being at home. Respect to the friendly staff.
Wasn’t able to stay linger on this trip.
Beaucoup de charme et personnel très attentionné
Unique classic environment, specially elegant breakfast restaurant
Needs general maintenance, carpets in rooms, etc. Separates lavatory faucets so water is very cold or very hot . Small old ugly shed separated from main building acting as restaurant does not cover minimum expectations
A very warm and friendly greeting on our arrival and a great stay. The facilities were great and although might not be to everyone's taste,we loved it. The hotel is furnished as a home with antique furnishings. We ate in the Potting Shed Bistro where the staff were excellent, helpful and cheerful. Despite being fully booked they managed to find a slot for us. Our room was comfortable but small which was fair enough as I had booked a small room. Gardens were lovely and a very pleasant walk. My husband was walking the Rob Roy Mighty Hike as were several other guests who were great company. We will be revisiting very soon.
Nothing.
The most stunning place I've stayed in🥰 Have never taken so many photos of a hotel and beautiful grounds absolutely magical!!
Water in shower wasn't hot and in the morning it was cold
Everything about the hotel is wonderful, room superb, food exceptional, fresh produce and the library, sitting room with open fires perfect. The staff especially Dan went above and beyond to make our stay so enjoyable.
Room was excellent. One small thing that would help: Bedside lamps ought to be independent of main room light switches. Could be dangerous if you need to use bathroom at night and unable to use lights from the bed. Otherwise perfect. Bistro also excellent value for money. Exceptional food and staff.
The house was amazing. Old and full of history but still comfortable. The library was my favourite room and we spent a few hours there after dinner in the most comfortable armchairs having drinks and talking to staff and other guests. Rooms were comfortable and the bed was perfect. Had dinner at the hotel which I would definitely recommend. Staff were so friendly and welcoming as well knowledgeable. Dan in particular was brilliant. A really enjoyable stay.
Everything was perfect.
Very charming staff! The library, bar, and drawing rooms were beautifully appointed and we spent quite a bit of time in there. If you open the windows, you can hear the calming sounds of the River Teith while sitting by a cozy fire! The beds were extremely comfortable, I had the best nights sleep in ages! The bistro also serves really solid food! We will definitely revisit this on another trip!
Staff were amazing and location.
Needs serious TLC. Could be amazing if some money spent on it. Not 4 star if you stay in the rooms sorry.
My daughter and I stayed for three nights and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend a visit.
As always a delightful stay. So welcoming and friendly - and the braw lounges and lovely gardens - mean the buildings and surrounds are as good as the staff. Only issue was the plug hole in our bath wasn't very secure and the bath water disappeared - just when I wanted a jacuzzi in the bath!!!
The service was excellent throughout and the meal in the bistro and the breakfast were very good. The main dining room was beautiful and it would be good to have an evening meal there sometime.
Breakfast good, staff excellent
The hotel really needed updating and money spent on it
Fantastic Breakfast
Squeaky floorboards
It was completely dreadful
The place was falling apart
Lovely building, grounds and staff
The staff were fantastic, esp the tall dark haired man at front desk/bar. Got a warm welcome and always happy to chat. Quirky wee place. Beds were really comfortable Food at Bistro was brilliant
The staff were very friendly. The breakfast was lovely and the grounds were stunning
I think it was overpriced for what it was There wasn't enough staff and our bathroom had a leak and was told to clean with a towel, for what we paid expected more defo not worth the money. Would have happily paid 150 not 300 very dated inside, needs an update the grounds were stunning
The food was excellent and the staff was extremely accommodating. A very friendly but professional establishment. I would come back if I could tomorrow!
Good location for exploring the area Quiet location Meals in Potting shed
Run down hotel and abandoned Restaurant was closed both nights Bed Room windows did not stay open and the fan in the bathroom did not work
Fabulous town and hotel. Lots of personality. Needs a bit of a refresh but it’s a lovely quiet restorative atmosphere. Dan the waiter - caretaker was excellent. Very kind and friendly. So was Charlie. Loved the dining experience.
It’s a gorgeous building and grounds in a very convenient location. Great value in every way. Great food in both the restaurant and the bistro. The staff could not do anymore to make our stay any better.
Maybe thin the trees to give a better view of the river? But I dare say that’s not allowed.
Good location and nice grounds. Hotel is traditional and quirky. Potting shed restaurant was really nice. Great food and lovely staff.
I just can’t see how they can justify such a high room price. And the breakfast of £19 per person is far too much for a very average breakfast. Sorry but I was expecting so much more for the price.
