I had no choice but to book it at an extremely expensive price compared to other dates since I could only travel during new years. I wouldnt say the amenities were appropriate for the price I have paid but considering that it is the busiest time of the year, I understand such result. The room itself was pretty simple and the view was quite nice. It was slightly cold tho, but there’s an extra heater so it wasnt a big issue. Things I didnt like was absence of a shower in the room and a small living room/sleeping area. 3 people just fit in the room and we couldnt sit around the table once the futon was set. Otherwise the service was great and we totally loved the onsens. Lots of variety, clean, hot and great view. Overall it was good, but not worth the price I paid. I still enjoyed the stay so I’m satisfied anyways.
Was scouting for a nice ryokan to celebrate my wife’s birthday in Yufuin. Chanced upon it as I was reading reviews and we are glad to have chosen this ryokan. The ryokan offers pickup from the Yufuin station. We just had to make a call from the public phone at the station and the driver picked us up in 10mins. It was definitely a beautiful hotel with very courteous staff welcoming us. The staff could speak basic English and it was definitely sufficient for us to communicate with them. For more complex requests, we had to speak Japanese with them. All in all we are very happy with their service. The welcome drink was great as they placed us facing mount Yufu. It was really beautiful. We wrote in to request for a room with a view and they were very accommodating to arrange it for us (with a small fee). We were indeed very pleased with the room as the view we had the next morning was so good with a clear sky. Dinner was a typical kaiseki, where waves of beautiful and tasty food kept coming in courses for us to savour and enjoy. It was definitely one of our better kaiseki’s that we have had over the years visiting all around Japan. The highlight of the stay was definitely the onsen where they had 2 private baths (available at first come first served basis) which was truly gorgeous. There was also a sitting/viewing area outside of the onsen area. Loved this ryokan and would definitely come back again.
I was really looking forward to the hospitality at a ryokan in Yufuin. I’ve stayed at other ryokans in Japan and the service was over the top. Unfortunately the service at the Yufunogo Saigakukan was very poor. The young Japanese woman who checked us in did not smile and was not friendly. We had two twin beds and an area for the tatami mats. We chose to sleep on the tatami mats because the beds were not comfortable and we were told that if we slept on the beds we would be charged an extra price ! I’ve never heard of this at a hotel. The private onsen is a nice option but it’s tiny. The public onsen was much better with a nice view of the Yufuin mountain. The dinner was very good and the Miyazaki beef was probably the best beef I’ve ever eaten. The only downside again was the service. We waited a long time between some courses and other courses were very rushed. We were never asked how we liked the food and mostly ignored. There was one lady at the front desk who was very friendly and made the experience a little better but overall the vibe was very “cold” and I would not recommend the hotel nor return.
Staffs were really freindly and it was a such an amaIng experience
Really good service and great onsen facilities but wish dinner can be served within the room.
This hotel is beautiful and relax. There are nice outdoor public and private onsen which is not crownded. (I’m only one in public onsen). Dinner is very delicious and the beef melts in the mount. I like the living room which is very relax and nice view. They offer yukata and pajama. However, this hotel is not in the downtown and can’t walk. But, I’m not sure they offer shuttle bus or not. I drived and arrived in evening. I spend one night and checked out in the morning, then I drived to walking street in the downtown. All is impressive and relax
This was truly a beautiful place! We were greeted very warmly by each staff member that we came accross. We were led to our room on arrival by a staff member and given a thorough tour of the hotel. We had a view of Mt Yufu and also opted for the breakfast and dinner for two nights. Every meal we had was amazing! After dinner, we hopped into one of the two private onsens and let our troubles melt away. The onsens, particularly the private ones, are in demand but most people usually stay for around 30 minutes, so you can either relax the in adjacent room with a view of their beautiful Japanese garden or go back to your room. We had a very wonderful and memorable time here. We will definitely be reccommending this to anyone we meet and will most certainly be coming back!
staff very good and polite
Nice stay here and good food provided. Staff are also very nice
It was awesome to stay at the hotel and enjoy all services. The food was good and even too much for us to manage! Thanks a lot and we will be back.
Excellent service. Good hot spring!
Our first time, with a group, in a traditional Japanese Inn, and it couldn't have been better. We stayed two nights, and had a selection of traditional Japanese meals and breakfasts. The 'special' meal was outstanding. The service was first class, and the amenities very good. the bedrooms had both beds and futons (excellent) and a full range of facilities. bathrooms small but adequate. It's an experience we would like to repeat.
The first visit by wife and I to a ryokan, as part of a small group. Very welcoming with all the staff very attentive with excellent service. Helpful that the owner and his wife spent many years in England. Plenty of food at all meal times with some explanation as to what everything was - unfortunately couldn’t do the Japanese food justice! The hot springs were great, with the ability to determine whether the family rooms were available via your television. The futons were very comfortable. In all, a wonderful different experience.
The ryokan is situated around 15 to 20 mins walk from the JR station. It was a nice walk to get there; alternatively, the ryokan has shuttle service and you can ask it to pick you up. The staff are friendly and helpful. The room is spacious and the ryokan has nice onsens. It also has two private onsens but I didn't get to use them. Both the dinner and breakfast were great.
We stayed here for two nights and had a fantastic experience. Although it’s a bit far from the bus/train station, they provide a free shuttle bus to take you to and from town. Being up the mountain a little ways, the view of the mountain and valley were beautiful. Another thing my wife liked was that they served both lunch and dinner. There were a two or three hour time frame where you could choose when to have your meals. The meals themselves were Japanese style with many different dishes throughout the courses. By the end of the meals, we were all full. The rooms were clean and had all types of amenities: TV, wifi, toothbrush, razors, hair dryer, air conditioning/heater, toilet and sink, hot water dispenser, table and floor chairs, balcony with small table, safe box and wardrobe. The only thing missing from the room was a shower. This was fine with us because we spent a lot of time in the hot springs. There were no western style beds in the room. Instead, each night during dinner the housekeeping staff would come make up a floor bed, which was very comfortable for us. The hot springs were calm and relaxing. They have two private/family hot spring rooms and separate public ones for men and women. Both types have indoor and outdoor baths with views of the mountains. The private baths are on a first come first serve basis, but the room tv shows you if the private baths are available. If not you can wait in the lounge area outside the private baths until they become available. Each of the areas has showering areas with soap, shampoo, lotion... The staff was extremely helpful and polite throughout our stay. They were courteous and always asked if we needed anything to make our stay better. Also, they were very accommodating if we wanted to change times for meals or shuttle services. If you ever get a chance to stay in Yufuin, I would suggest choosing Saigakukan. We will definitely be coming back here.
This is the perfect place for Westerners to experience a ryokan. First of all, the ryokan is situated on a hillside overlooking the valley and Mt. Yufu. While the uninitiated can be at a loss of what to do and how to behave in a ryokan, the two charming "directors" speak good English and have lived several years on a work assignment in England. More than most, they understand Western habits and expectations. Unlike most ryokans, several room come equipped with both Western beds as well as classic tatami mats. The hotel offered two different bathing pools - Onsen - (inside and outside overlooking the mountains) for men and women as well as a private pool for families or small groups. Very nice. The staff is very anxious to please. The dining was very appealing to the eye though it is hard for me to judge how well it met Japanese standards. It's a unique and very insightful experience -- I strongly recommend this ryokan to Western travelers.
The hotel is really very nice and staffs are very friendly. It is about 5-8 minutes drive from the Yufuin JR station and the hotel offers free shuttle bus for pick up at the station. The hotel faces Yufu Mountain and the view from the resturant is excellent. My room is a traditional Japanese style room with balcony facing the Yufu Mountain as well. It is very spacious and comfortable. The outdoor hot spring is relatively large and it is so relaxing to enjoy the spring water bath. There are also 2 private hot springs that you can use whenever it is available (no need to book). After enjoying the hot spring, you can take a rest at the conversation room . The dinner is served with Wagyu beef and chicken and is very tasty. It really gives me a memorable trip in Yufuin and I surely recommended my friends to stay at this hotel.
Strong urine smell in the bathroom when checked in to the hotel.
Some might had a good stay with service, but sadly It has not happened to me. ; ( I stayed with my mum and dad for 1 night. Run of house type with half board. 1. The room condition - Normal, nothing special. But the room was small and right beside hallway. 2. Food - It was ok, but middle of the course, we had to wait for more than 10mins and other table who started dinner after us were served before us. 3. Location - far from main street, the Kinrin lake is 10mins away by car. 4. Smell - My mum didn't like the mell of "tatami", please be aware of that. And the room number "2105" is beside kitchen. Mixed smell of foods and tatami, wow, You don't want to smell it. My mum had headache all night and morning. She bearly slept that night. - I put on the air purifier all night but didn't help. 5. View from hot spring - Good........ Same as the photo. However, after that smell, I would pay more and stay other ryokan with similar view. I am not going to say do not stay there, I just want to say one thing. If you have a sensitive nose, then do not stay at "2105". ask them to change to another room.
Not bad for family getaways or lunch with spring. They offer decent quality lunch menu which was not enough for adults though.
Nice accomendation, room is nice and clean with amendeties. Nice Private Onsen, food was first day OK second day (our meaning) it taste not so good. But this can be our taste...... The staff is exellent and very friendly everething you ask is for them a plesure. Surroundings are supeeb.
This was my first time in a traditional ryokan, so my review does not draw from a reservoir of similar experience. I stayed one night in this beautiful establishment which is perched on a hill overlooking the town. It is a twenty minute walk from the town center, providing a rather calm atmosphere. It has a direct view of Mount Yufu, visible both from the restaurant and the baths. I slept in a traditional tatami room with a window to an outdoor corridor. Though the view wasn't great, it did give an idea of the Japanese skill in creating intimate spaces; it was decorated with moss-covered stone sculptures such as a small lantern and what looked liked a bird bath. It created the illusion that this was a private, protected space just for my appreciation. There are two public baths, one male and one female, and two private baths that all guests can use whenever available. Both public and private baths have outdoor and indoor facilities. I found the decoration around the baths beautiful and intimate. The included dinner kaiseki was highly decorative and tasty. It includes sashimi, pickled vegetables, miso soup, beef that you grill yourself, etc. You can order a single glass of plum-based alcohol or tea included in the meal. It wasn't the tastiest meal I have tried in Japan, but it was highly tasteful, natural and balanced. The breakfast the following morning was just lighter but just as tasteful. We tried each one of the private baths at dawn to see the sun rising. The hotel gave us a ride to Yufu station free of charge. All in all, the experience was enlightening, relaxing and definitely worth it.
I got the winner prize to rest at Yufuno Saigakukan. It ' s the ryokan hotel,(Japanese style). It's closely with Yufuin Mountain, very beautiful view. 2 types of onsen services; private and public onsen. The price is included with breakfast and dinner that very delicious. It's far 10 minutes from Yufuin village that you can walk and shop and you can enjoy with the lake.
This ryokan is a bit away from the main area. It's cool to see all the streams of onsen steam from different facilities over the city. The ryokan is traditional setting and has a bunch of old things set out as decoration. The night we were there happened to have a kagura performance, in which the ryokan owner was part of a group that sang and danced some folk songs. We had a very early departure so the staff had some onigiri and sandwiches for us to take along. My room had toilet but no bath facility which was fine since I rarely use my own shower when there's onsen facility.
The Japanese owners who lived in London for some years, provide a traditional style inn. One can select Japanese rooms or a room slightly more aimed at Westerners in that there is a western bathroom and a choice of a futon on a tatami mat or an ordinary bed. The rooms have a Japanese sitting area and a sleeping area , divided by sliding shutters. There is an onset- Japanese hot water spring bath, male and female areas separate. The Japanese dinner was spectacular even for this agnostic. The breakfast is also traditional Japanese fare which I found a bit challenging at 0745hr, but they have fruit, buns, jam and orange juice for the faint hearted. The staff are very kind and helpful and a very enjoyable stay is to be had.
I could not have found a better Onsen hotel, from the tea service offered at checkin to all the meals and baths, this place surpassed all my expectations. Just look at my pictures and you will know what I mean, it's almost too beautiful to believe. The drawback is that the hotel is a bit farther from the Main Street, so I did my touristy thing on the main street first, then grabbed a taxi( less than 1000yen) to the hotel around 4, and just relaxed at the hotel. I usually buy some snacks and booze for the evening in the room, since there's zero nightlife.
We met earthquake during our stay in hotel. I was impressed by the management and attitude of hotel staff. Although the hotel was damaged severely, hotel staff kept going in and out from the hotel to take jackets and quilt to customers. Everybody was panic at that moment. Luckily, hotel staff had good command of English, so that foreign customers could understand what was going on and what we should do. The hotel environment was excellent and the food was very nice. It was so pity for the loss and damages that had been caused. Thank you for the staff and hope it can recover soon
We stayed at Yufunogo Saigakukan on our first night in Yufuin. The hotel dining area has a lovely view. The staff were friendly and helpful. The price is very reasonable since it includes dinner and breakfast. Dinner is a nice kaiseki meal. We came with our friends and their family in a total of 12 people including kids - so they set a big table for us in a private dining area. The room we stayed was the Garden view room. It comes with a toilet room and a wash basin in the dressing area, but without the bathroom. We need to go to the onsen for bath. There is a public and 2 private onsen where you can use with your family or friends. It is on a first come first serve basis. It's pretty nice with outdoor onsen. There is a massage chair you can use in the public area as well.
I'm so glad we've chosen this place to stay... the room (specify mountain view) was great... service is excellent, i would only improve dinner, adding more variety for those who don't like fish... at dinner the beef was the best part (my opinion)...
