We only had dinner one night and it was very nice. They did not serve breakfast during the week only weekends.
The bed was very uncomfortable.
Nice comfortable rooms, friendly staff. Handy for transport into Edinburgh and close to harbour
On a main road, a little noisy at closing time as my room was above front door, but quiet enough after.
Cleanliness, room size
May consider providing basic toiletries.
Extremely poor value for our two-night stay. For £450 we expected a high-level experience. Instead, we found ourselves in a bog-standard pub. We had to find some bar staff to check us in. Our room was cramped. Coffee and tea were provided but no biscuits. No fridge, no mini bar, no room safe. Wifi was effective but not securely password-protected. Two bath towels but no hand towels. (Staff told us they only had bath towels!) No bedside table or reading light on one side of the bed. The bathroom light kept going off , then on again. One bathroom window was covered with a sheet of cardboard. Only very basic toiletries were provided (a small bar of soap) and there was no shelf in the shower. The mattress was too soft. Noise from the pub downstairs went on till 11.00 pm. We used the restaurant for dinner once and almost walked out as the service was so slow, though the food was satisfactory. Incredibly, the hotel 'doesn't do breakfasts midweek', so you have to wander the streets of early morning Musselburgh looking for somewhere that does! Not a serious hotel, and price-gouging during Edinburgh's festival period.
The staff were friendly and helpful. It was convenient to travel i to Edinburgh
Breakfast was only served on the weekend
Room interior was nice
Beds were a bit saggy. Also, expected a double bed but got two singles pushed together.
Everything around the bar and the restaurant were fine.
The mattress in room 7 sucks it was like sleeping on the base of the bed
Super friendly staff. The room was large and exactly what we needed for our stay. Lots of food options around and supermarkets close by. Parking was easy to access.
Location was good
Bed was too hard no fan in room 😫 l
Through our own mistake we were later than expected & staff very kindly allowed us a late check in after normal hours
Bar man/barista made me a lovely cup of hot chocolate. All the bar staff were nice. Car park taken up by all the pub patrons.
It's a pub with rooms dreaming it's something grander. It really tries with the room decor (nice touch to have a thinner duvet for the weather, but could have been a bit bigger) and a flashy bathroom (nice towels) . But! The noise in the pub below is loud in the roomsl. Decor nice, bed is really small and creaky. Bathroom lovely and big, but floor tiles are broken. Avoid restaurant at all costs. Overpriced and underwhelming. Don't call it a restaurant and then serve something a supermarket cafe would be ashamed of! You can cook fresh food fairly easily. But don't call yourself a restaurant if you serve up freezer to fryer food and can't get that right! I told the server politely what was wrong and didn't make a fuss, she said she passed my comments to the cook - please listen and do something. I wish I'd gone to Aldi for some food). Thank god I didn't book breakfast. Stayed at the Ship Inn a couple doors up last year, much better.
Handy location within easy travel to Edinburgh.
Room was hot and noisy if window open.
Location
Breakfast being served from 9am however you have to checkout at 10am. That did not meet our needs.
There was a wedding on that we were unaware of. There were wedding guests shouting up the stairs where our room was until gone midnight. The bed was lumpy due to it being 2 beds pushed together. The pillows were also poor.
Party of 4 for drinks in the sunshine..served by 2 miserable barmaids who at 1 point were having an argument..sevice was very slow.. got our round of drinks wrong twice! bar was covered with dirty glasses as were the tables outside also dirty dishes..very expensive for drinks..only good thing I can say was the weather..heard lots of other customers complaining about the same issues..never again!!! AVOID
This was our 3rd stay as 3 couples for our annual trip to Musselburgh Races. Sadly it will be our last stay at Ravelston. The positives are that it is within walking distance to the Races, restaurants and bars which is why we changed to here from the previous hotel we stayed at. The staff are exceptional despite clearly being over worked and not enough resource to deal with the bar and food service. There are often long queues to be served. There is no reception as such so it can take a while to get hold of someone to check in and out. We were just handed keys with no information. I always book the same rooms a year in advance however on this occasion 1 room wasn't a twin. When I spoke to the Manager there was barely an apology and a half hearted offer to change the config of a room if we swapped with our friends. As we had a dinner booking and wanted to get changed we were unable to do this. The bar is very lively and can be noisy and boisterous at times. The noise didn't subside till 12.45am and we did have 2 young guys who had come upstairs to make phone calls outside our room to source a party and gear which was a but unsettling. We were in Room 2 which was clean however the bed was extremely uncomfortable. The mattress dipped in lots of places and was lumpy. Not ideal if you need a firm supportive mattress. They've also stopped providing toiletries except a bar of soap. We've always had breakfast included in the price however this was not the case this time yet we were still paying the same price. The lovely lady who was serving breakfast was very apologetic that we hadn't been told. We did have a bit of a wait for our food however it was lovely when it did arrive. On checkout we again waited in the bar with no one around to eventually find out that the money for the rooms had already been taken. In previous years we have always paid for each room on checkout. Again something that wasn't explained. Musselburgh is very limited in accommodation for the Races however the recent reviews of the Ravelston do seem to have the same themes throughout. For us it definitely wasn't worth £150 a night.
Location and lovely room
Only 1 towel in bathroom. No hot water coming from shower It was louder than normal which was midweek.
We stayed the same period last year and wrote a very positive review so it is disappointing to write this. We were advised on arrival of potential noise due to managers 40th Birthday Party. Band playing in bar until 10ish and function suite until 1 AM. We had children running around the hotel chapping on bedroom doors until the early hours so little sleep. Disappointing given we booked 5 months in advance and if advised of party, we would have looked at alternative accommodation. No breakfast midweek which we learned from reading the information in the bedroom.
Location near beach.
Room on first floor of pub. Pub noise until 11pm audible. Not relaxing at all. Cut trip short
Location, friendly staff. Also restaurant is good too
Nothing
Clean and cosy enjoyed our stay 👍
Nothing to report 🍺
Cleanliness
Very noisy from live music till 23:00 and drinking and shouting till late Terrible mattress Luke warm shower in the morning
The Ravelston was good for a short stay and would book again, staff were friendly and the room was clean and tidy, the food was very good also.
The bar was rather noisy.
Well impressed with modern and stylish decoration and facilities. Very clean, great large bed, good TV, Wi-Fi, tea/coffee in room. Great restaurant/bar downstairs with good wholesome food on offer
All good
Good location, staff were lovely, especially the lady doing breakfast. Room was comfortable. Need to know this is a pub, so expect loud music until late at the weekends.
No hot water, so ended up having cold showers. Difficult to find staff during the day, other than in the bar.
Absolutely freezing no hot water heaters tepid , no reception book in through the bar then try to navigate upstairs with people sitting on the stairs and kids running up and down them
Clean and comfortable
Stayed for 2 nights, in room 2, mattress was horrible felt springs coming through, not comfortable at all. Room was okay, TV, tea/coffee okay size however the noise from the pub was ridiculous they didn’t stop till 11pm and was like sleeping in the bar. It’s more a pub than accommodation with only 6 rooms so it’s like an after thought.
It was very clean, all staff very good
The bed was very uncomfortable, mattress very springy , with twanging noise ever time you moved. No bath mat in the bathroom, and wash basin very slow to drain. Breakfast was very disappointing and very pricey for what you got .
Good location
They were unable to supply us with second key and we had to ask for towels
Room was clean and cosy. Bathroom facilities were nice and the downstairs pub was great and the staff were all reallt nice
There was a smell in our room perhaps from.the toilet. There was a wedding or something on and it was very loud until midnight. It did quiet doen after that.
Had a lovely afternoon here with friends. Tried a variety of food off the menu and everything was lovely, decent sized portions and a really good price!! Nice atmosphere, really friendly staff and gorgeous food...can't ask for more! Will definitely be back!
There was no room heating during are stay.
breakfast well i was houng over a bit
Location was good
No breakfast available, no toiletries in bathroom that was mouldy round the shower. No working wifi in room, very noisy fans/air conditioning from downstairs. Bed was ridiculously too soft.
Nice
I couldn't get an extra day
Really nice and clean rooms with plenty space
Manageress solved the problem of our room being a little cold
Would prefer a breakfast in house
Busstation in front of the house, close to the beach
Heating turned off during the night, twice no hot water in the morning, everyday loud noise from the bar, forgot to turn off the music one night
Nothing really I advise people not to stay, the Ship on next door a lot better
The overall appearance is very scruffy, it was very cold as the heating was not turned on and in March you need it as very cold in Edinburgh. No breakfast offered and was told that they don’t serve it anymore, the bar area looked like a home for the unemployed.
Warm comfortable room. Lovely bathroom. Great central location.
Essentially a pub/event space which also has rooms. Got keys from the bar. Offhand rather than welcoming. Left to own devices largely. Could do with more staff. A pity because rooms were very nice.
Great lunch, party of 10, 7 adults and 3 children. Visited for lunch with family. The service was great with friendly staff. Most of us had 3 courses. The food was outstanding, freshly made, large portion sizes and delicious. We stayed for around 2 hours as the children took a little longer to eat, we also had a baby in a pram and they had arranged suitable space for our group
Central location for the event we were attending.
The rooms are very small and cold. I had to go and ask about the heating at 6.30 on a January night to be told it was on a timer and that they would put it on boost…surely the timer needs to be set earlier. The bed was very uncomfortable, old sunk mattresses. And although the bathroom seemed recently fitted there was an unacceptable amount of black mould in the shower.
The room was small, but clean and tidy. The en suite bathroom was well appointed although the toilet needed to be flushed a couple of times. The shower worked well.
The service in the restaurant was slow, we had to wait a long time for our meal even though the restaurant was not busy. The food was very good though.
Clean and comfortable. Big bathroom with a great shower. Plenty of parking. Great value for the price
A sample of shower gel would be useful
I stayed here during a night with temperatures at minus seven degrees. There was no heating in my room. The room stayed cold the entire night and I could not sleep. No one was at the reception and no one answered the phone. This made the stay uncomfortable and unsafe. I would not recommend this hotel based on my experience.
Easy to find on Main Street, easy late check in , lovely staff. Even offered to carry my case to the room. Would definitely return.
Nothing it was great.
No breakfast Curtains had a hole in them poor attention to detail
comfortable room with good bed and bathroom . Nice meal in the bar.
Heating was off in the morning so bedroom was freezing. There was nobody downstairs at all at 8.30- no breakfast was on offer ( which had been offered) We were left puzzled and disappointed. We stayed until 930 but nobody turned up and the bedroom was still cold. This is not acceptable . I don't like writing negative reviews but in this case it was deserved. I have finally responded to booking.com's constant requests for a review.
The size of the room was very spacious and the bathroom had a roomy shower and was very modern. Lovely service by the waitress in the restaurant at dinner.
There was only one bedside light on our bed. No toiletries were provided in the shower. No breakfast was available, although the “ good Breakfast “ was mentioned in the booking response.
Location good, staff friendly but we were in room 2 and it lacked a bit of attention to detail. Lamps need replaced. A fresh dusting would be good. Carpet definitely wasn’t hoovered. The smell of fish from kitchen was overpowering. Something smelly in room to mask smell would have been welcoming. Bathroom modern but again attention to detail needed. Shower edging mouldy. Tiling needing grouting. Wasn’t aware that breakfast wasn’t included in price. Website stated free breakfast. Breakfast itself was good. Bigger handle cups would be better use but for £125 a night plus breakfast itself definitely not good value for money… read reviews before booking
Looked good and pretty clean, location is good.
Looks great but the mattress wasn't. Pretty sure there was a spring ready to pop through. Really hot in the evening, no heating in the morning. Noisy plumbing from other rooms.
Clean and nice staff
Comfortable and clean
No breakfast facilities on weekdays
The room was freezing kept asking them to put the heating on said would and never me and my partner were sitting freezing with our jackets on most of the night and they set fireworks right outside our window with telling us
Had a meal here last night and although the food was lovely the service was terrible. We waited several minutes to be seated to our reserved table, no one came so we sat ourselves down, there seemed to be one member of staff serving the entire restaurant which was quite busy. Finally our order was taken by this rushed member of staff, meal and drinks delivered and server disappeared. Within 20 minutes we saw the lady behind the public bar rush back and forth from the bar to get food to serve in the bar, no sight of server in restaurant, suddenly there were 3 younger members of staff coming in and out of the kitchen with food, then they disappeared. Finally we had to ask the lady at the bar to get someone to give us our bill, then again to ask someone to bring a card reader, all 3 members of staff seemed to have vanished. Although food was lovely, the lack of service in restaurant when clearly well staffed is an issue and I would think twice about returning which is a shame.
Room was fairly comfortable although mattress has seen better days. Bathroom facilities were lovely as was storage. Can't fault the lady who served us breakfast, she was friendly, helpful and cheerful.
Had I known that there would be live music in the bar we would not have stayed on this occasion. Other than breakfast - staff were few and far between and often carrying out several roles at once.
Room and toilet were spacious
Heating went on at 4pm and off again by 10pm, which left the room freezing at night, where the room was situated, there was a constant noise from the bar t the bottom of the stairs, and had easy access for children running up the stairs and making a noise,it felt like the hotel was running a cost cutting regime.
Good hotel in great location.
Very noisy in room at night as there was a bridal function on disturbing sleep quality and overall stay. Couldn’t check out early at 7:30am and had to go back later on.

Location
Nice room
Nüscht
Laut lauter am lautesten... Unglaublich. Gammeliges Bad. Super alte Betten. Furchtbar
Great helpful staff. Lovely room decor. Very clean. Fabulous breakfast
Mattress very soft to sit on but very comfortable to sleep on. Initially noisey from bar and events room but not too loud immediately stopped at midnight then silent all night
The staff were pretty friendly and helpful. The location is good for what we needed it for, also close to Edinburgh
Very uncomfortable bed, overpriced for what you get, no breakfast, no toiletries which is pretty poor considering the price. The extraction fan in the bathroom takes ages to switch off. The light system in the bathroom means you have to keep moving which is a bit of an issue, I'll let you use your imagination there!
Really nice location if you are looking for a place to stay around Edinburgh and parking was a plus. The rooms were clean and cute, however the water in the shower was nowhere warm enough and during the first night there was a lot of noise coming from the adjacent room (every time someone opened the door next to our room it felt like they were coming into our room instead which made it difficult to sleep) although all ok the other nights
An older property but refurbished to a high standard. We chose this property as a means of visiting Edinburgh without he hassle of parking our vehicle in town. We took the bus into Edinburgh from Musselburgh. Very convenient.
The rooms in the hotel are nice and clean. It was a bit noisy with a singer on in the bar, his volume was ok it was some of the guests who were enjoying themselves that were very loud. Breakfast was fantastic, lovely fresh hot food. Shame there was no orange juice. Will certainly recommend and stay again if the opportunity arises.
Loverly staff xx
Our bed was to small for us
Staff were fantastic, very good quality breakfast
A little overpriced ,booked deluxe double but would regard as standard double
If I'm honest I didn't expect much due to the price It was almost three times cheaper than other options further out of Edinburgh The room was small but clean and bed comfortable Cosy with tea and coffee facilities Hair dryer provided and shower small again but clean and modern Bonus is the bar downstairs offering a range of drinks including Tennants and Beaver town neck oil. Best take your own travel iron but nothing else really needed Are immediately round the area isn't great but has an Aldi and Lidl within 5 mins walk. 2 miles away from Portobello beach with hip cafes and takeaways so either take a walk along there and enjoy the sunset or even take a dip. Great location for a trip to Edinburgh Just 23 min drive passing Holyrood area. Beautiful! Well worth the stay No breakfasts at the hotel. We recommend 5 mins round the block go to Company bakery on eskmills estate. Very swanky and lovely coffee.
We came to an event in the function suite. The price of drinks gave us a shock.£10+ for 3 cokes & a capri sun. The food arrived, and we emailed in our dietary requirements. Dairy Free and Almond free. The food arrived, and the Free From options were pitiful. The dairy free option. For two children was salsa veggie rolls. (Looked like a sausage roll) tuna sandwich, coronation chicken, and something else. Went to ask the staff in the main bar. Very rude, the kitchen is closed. The dairy free options are source external. Asked if there was just bread and ham. They did bring out later, but it was ham and mayo. Asked for a portion of chips to feed my kids as they were getting hungry. The kitchen is closed. Lorraine in the bar was extremely rude. There was a lovely bar man in the function suite they gave my two kids a pot of pringles each. Can't thank him enough. The free from / vegetarian options were not touched by any of the 100+ people at the event! Went to get two soft drinks £6.90. We are not in Edinburgh city centre!!! Definitely avoid this place if you have dietary requirements.
This review was nearly one star. First of all, this is not a guest house - it’s a pub with a few rooms. We arrived tired after a long journey on a Saturday night and our room was directly above the pub lounge that had very loud musical entertainment. The music went on late and then we were kept awake by the pub clients’ loud singing until they were sent home. Our room was large and clean but there were some stains on the bed cover. The bathroom door was broken and the WiFi didn’t work despite entering the correct password several times. The only toiletries provided were a couple of tiny rounds of soap. No body wash or shampoo. We had breakfast on Sunday morning and the lady serving was lovely. Sunday and Monday nights were thankfully quieter. We ate at the restaurant once more for dinner and again the same lovely lady served us and the food was good. This lady is why we have awarded more stars. In summary, if you’re looking for a peaceful place to stay do not book this place on a weekend. If it’s a week day and you don’t mind not having breakfast included (they stopped serving breakfast on week days) then it’s ok, made much better by the lovely lady in the restaurant.
It was a last minute booking with a small discount on the price so decided to go for it. The rooms looked decent, we were coming to Musselburgh and knew the hotel was central to where we wanted to be based. Unfortunately, the hotel is more of a pub with rooms rather than a hotel. The room is very small but is clean. The bathroom is very small, the shower cubicle far too small with absolutely no space to turn or bend down to pick up soap or shampoo, with no shelf to hold soap or shampoo. So, showering was not an enjoyable or relaxing experience. Add in the power-saving bathroom light that turns off and in unless movement is detected and it just becomes really annoying. There was tea and coffee available in the room but they were of average quality. All things considered, I definitely won't be rushing back.
Spacious room, good shower. Very busy pub and when we arrived it was clear they were short staffed. Bit noisy but didn’t go on too late. Breakfast is only available at the weekends, there was some confusion as I had an email telling me there was no breakfast service. I had emailed back but didn't get a reply. Having said that breakfast was good and the man serving was really friendly and helpful. The bus stop right outside is great if you want to go into Edinburgh (stop is on Princes Street.
Easy access to centre and beach
Great place to stay , lovely staff ,great location for Edinburgh
Booked in for stay for Scottish 10k so just 20 minutes walk from start. Good location and bathroom.
As there was a wedding on there was outside noise until after midnight. Breakfast was just main meal no fruit juices or cereals etc and no breakfast available on weekdays
Nice location close to the sea and also the city centre
There wasn’t anything particular I was dissatisfied with.
Personeel is heel erg vriendelijk.
