The Magic Sponge

Absolument rien!

The property is a cool old house and the rooms have high ceilings with fans. Host is super attentive.

Lovely large room with comfortable beds and pillows. We were on the ground floor but there wasn’t a problem with noise at all. Room felt the most homely we’ve had in our travels. Nice lamps, pictures and even plants. Large tv with lots of channels. Great location. Would definitely recommend The Magic Sponge.

Fridge would have been a bonus but not a problem. Missed having a mirror by a plug to dry my hair but again that’s a minor issue.

I never had such a warm welcome before, William greeted us with such friendliness and a cold beer. He was very helpful all the time, Breakfast was amazing, I can definitely recommend the Eggs Benedict! The location is great and only a short walk to the river! I can highly recommend this very special place

I can’t think of anything

Everything.

The recorded swiftlets singing from across from the street but it added to the ambiance.

Fabulous location, walk-able to many restaurants and to the river. I had some great conversations with the owner and other guests; it's a good place to socialize if you want to. As a solo traveler this was a big bonus for me. The restaurant is wonderful ... lots of choices and everything was delicious. Happy hour 5-7 daily! :-) Room was basic, clean and provisioned with water, electric kettle etc. WiFi was fast and totally reliable! This is rare in my experience of Cambodia. TV has lots of channels with movies, sports, etc. All-in-all it's a wonderful place to stay and explore the area. William is a great host. Five stars!

I thought the beds were a bit firm for my taste ... but this is a common issue in SE Asia.

The owner was friendly and the hospitality was excellent overall. The room was comfortable and had all the basics covered and more. The grounds were nice and good location.

The shower could have been a bit hotter and higher pressure but was still plenty sufficient.

Gestore americano, persona molto allegra, entusiasta e disponibile. Offre anche servizio di ristorante e colazione. Televisione molto grande con Netflix e Sky Glass gratuiti. Posizione leggermente defilata dal centro, meglio così.

Cortile d'ingresso un po' decadente

The food , friendly owner, good price, snooker, quiet area

Clean comfortable and great location.William the owner was very helpful and friendly.

The property is run by William. He does all the booking, check ins and departures, he also finds time to run the restaurant, bar, maintenance, helpful tourist advice and booking of transport. He has a small team of staff which he looks after. Nothing is of any trouble and you are made to feel very welcome. The theme is to Chill out and that’s how you feel whilst staying at The Magic Sponge. The in room entertainment is top class and with the clearest of picture on the screen providing enough selection to keep you entertained. The food is of very high standard with an extensive menu using quality products than most hotel cheap brands. There are plenty of areas to enjoy around the grounds including crazy golf (9 hole) and 2 pool tables under the nice smelling pink jasmine pergola.

Leaving

Nothing

The person I booked on Booking.com for $25 tried to charge me $38 for the room, in cash, but I refused. They caused me problems; the owner was very grumpy.

The host is a very friendly American man and helped to organis motorbike hire, taxi to the airport, and gave us a room upgrade. Welcome drinks were well appreciated. The fried cheese balls are delicious. Quiet street. Rooms are clean and spacious.

The outdoor area and pool tables could do with a cleaning and some maintenance

Nice boutique place, close to Epic Arts Cafe & other city attractions. Great happy hour & inhouse restaurant. Pool tables, mini golf & movies to entertain. Value for money overall.

The owner and staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The food portions and quality were incredible and good value for money.

Rien

Warm welcome, good food, very clean

It started with the warm welcome and accompanying beer. William is a great host, ready to provide information on request but not in any way overwhelming. The bar was cool, the breakfast was indeed voluminous but also delicious. Really enjoyed the Kampot vibe too.

Very friendly, helpful owner. Extremely pretty bedroom. Huge range of food available. Excellent location, close to river, with ATM, supermarket and new bus station for VET buses from Phnom Penh extremely close. Lots of films and UK tv available if you want to watch tv!

Nothing!

Lovely host. Great location. William was very helpful recommending a tour

The piped bird noises that go on all night. Also, the place could probably use some renovations, especially the bathroom.

Absolutely the best breakfast in all of cambodia. Amazing fresh quality food. Cheap as chips. Absolutely reccomend to anyone in kampot

I fell in love with this place. Everything was so perfect. Location, rooms, owner, food, cleanliness, price was great. I highly recommend it. It really made my stay in Kampot a wonderful experience.

I cannot think of a single thing I didn’t like.

Food choice fantastic and excellent quality and size Accommodation high standard TV loaded with 1000 s of channels Friendly staff highly recommended

Nothing

The owner William was very friendly and was excellent in communicating in advance of our stay. Lovely quiet guesthouse in a quiet location very walkable to the main strip. Great mini golf too!!

breakfast was awesome huge portions

Fantastic building that is very well maintained and superb service from the welcoming owner.

The host is very friendly and good humoured! As well as having very clean rooms, the cuisine is excellent, with both Asian and Western dishes. The location in Kampot is also very good. The outdoor area of the guest house is really cosy.

The accommodation is a stylish and beautifully designed house in a quiet, centrally located area. William is an excellent host who takes care of all our needs. We felt very comfortable in his house.

There was no complaint at all.

A big smile from William and a complimentary cold beer on arrival really set the tone for our stay at The Magic Sponge. We ended up staying here for five nights and absolutely loved it. The room we had was spacious, spotless, and all of the facilities looked and felt brand new. The area around Kampot can be dusty, so the rain shower in the bathroom was always a welcome treat. We didn’t use it, but each room has a large TV with Netflix and other channels. The beds are comfortable, and the air conditioning did its thing silently on those hot and humid nights. The restaurant menu at The Magic Sponge tells you that American-sized portions are served, and this is absolutely true. We had breakfast here every morning of our stay, and it set us up for the rest of the day—we weren’t hungry again until dinner time. I highly recommend the breakfast burrito and the eggs hollandaise with Kampot pepper ham. Yummy! We can’t recommend The Magic Sponge highly enough for your stay in Kampot. As well as all of the above, it’s just a very short walk to all of the sights in the center of town.

This is one of those few places that I can't find anything negative to say.

We liked the location you can walk nearly everywhere. The recommended tuk tuk drive around the countryside was great and cost 25$ for 6 hours.

All rooms accessible externally 24 hours a day, when reception is closed after 20.30. Access via side gate to the site. Lovely big ceiling fan in the room, which met all my needs.

Very kind and helpful owner, in a cute and well-maintained Khmer house. Thanks for a great stay.

The rooms were clean and comfortable. The location was good, a short walk into the centre of Kampot, with restaurants and cafes nearby.

There was a problem with the drain in one of the bathrooms but the owner was very efficient, called the plumber straight away and made sure that it was fixed pretty much the same day.

It was a great hotel all round, the host, William was very welcoming. It was convenient and we loved the beautiful architecture and history of the place. We hired a tuk-tuk on William's recommendation to visit the countryside and beach and it was a beautiful day.

Shower could do with a makeover but this is a small quibble

William the owner and staff bent over backwards to accommodate my wishes. Tasty food and huge portions. Terrific location, super clean rooms. I‘ve been coming to Kampot a number of years now. This guesthouse is the best by far in Kampot for value of money. I would give it 11 out of ten if I could.

The reviews are so spot on. William is amazing. When we arrived he got us a cold drink and went through the property. The food is amazing and are super large American portions. Williams is a great host! William organised for a countryside tour with his tuk tuk driver Parry. Parry was a superstar, great tour and super nice man! We had a fantastic day! We were able to run a tab and pay for our meals, drinks and accommodation at the end which saves bank fees and freed up our physical cash. William runs a midday movie at midday, they are always random and can be quite entertaining! Give it a go! We had the family room. It had a queen and two singles. The room was spotless and house keeping went through every day. Which a clean place. There are over 4000 cable channels which kept our teenager happy. Air con was nice and cold, and comfy beds after we have had a number of super hard beds in south east Asia. Such great value for money! Thanks William :)

Just a heads up if travelling with medication required to be refrigerated, contact William before as no fridge in the room. I am sure William will organise to put in one of his fridges.

William was an exceptionally friendly and helpful English speaking host who makes sure the hotel and restaurant are both of the highest standard. We really enjoyed our stay and would have liked to stay longer. Our room was spacious, clean and nicely detailed, with excellent WiFi. Quiet but close and convenient location. A wonderful hotel overall.

This was our second time to stay at the Magic Sponge, and it was a great stay. Truly one of my favourite places to stay in Cambodia. Room was clean, spacious, comfortable and well maintained. William and all the ladies who work there are lovely and welcoming. And the bonus is the food served here is also top notch. Kampot is quite small so everywhere is walkable

There is nothing to fault

Lovely setting with mini golf and pool table. Very comfortable rooms with good WiFi and Netflix. Great restaurant and bar. Very friendly and helpful owner.

Nothing.

I just want to confirm all the good stuff that has been said in the other reviews. William, the owner is a great guy, super helpful and always present.

We loved our stay at the Magic Sponge, the owner is an awesome guy so friendly and helpful with everything. The room was really comfortable and the guesthouse is very clean. We also ate there for both dinner and breakfast and the food was just amazing and so filling. The location of the guesthouse is perfect there is many coffee shops, restaurants and shops within walking distance. We wished we were able to stay a few nights longer!

Nothing

Everything about the Magic Sponge was wonderful. The room is very spacious and well appointed. William is a friendly and helpful host. Highly recommend staying here…we extended our stay by 3 days.

Nothing.

William, the host and his crew are extremely helpful and accommodating. Rooms are super comfortable, a/c is amazing and location is fabulous. Food was great too. My boys loved playing mini golf and pool too! Will be back.

The Magic Sponge is the best hotel name I've come across, and the accommodation did indeed remedy us. Thank you to our kind and attentive host William. We were very happy with the quality of our room, including comfortable bed, hot shower (we had to wait a few minutes for the hot water), air-conditioning and high finish. We also enjoyed the delicious food, generous portions, relaxing in the bar and watching classic movies. Many thanks.

The room and bed were clean and comfortable. The tv was so great with a massive selection of movies. Wifi worked well! Location was good. The host was super friendly! The restaurant downstairs had a good and cheap selection of food. There’s also a tv there to watch movies while eating, which is liked! It was all good and I enjoyed my stay!

The shower wasn’t too good, no pressure and cold water. But the rest make up for it :)

Very great extra large portion meals, very friendly professional staff and quiet location

The meals were delicious!

Definitely exceeded my expectations. The Magic Sponge is spotless and the owner and staff are all super attentive and friendly. Great to have pool tables onsite too. Our room while small was well maintained and had good working A/C. Would definitely reccommend.

Lots of mosquitos so make sure you bring bug spray if you're sitting outside. Other than that, no complaints.

I have known this hotel for a ling time. William the owner is attentive to people needs and very proud of his establishmen. Staff are excellent, highly recommend food here even if not staying, generous portions. Close to centre without noise, good night sleep. Plus a crazy golf course 😀

We loved staying at The Magic Sponge. It was an oasis while travelling. We stayed longer. The beds were great. The room was clean. The extra bonus of mini-golf and pool tables kept us entertained. ( as well as the fabulous coffee) The restaurant at the hotel was fabulous. Portions were huge and well cooked. William was a great host. It was our favourite place to stay in Asia.

Excellent value for money

William the Host and the team our welcoming and warm.

It’s not a negative but I personally need a refrigerator, due to medical reasons. I was able to keep my meds in the kitchen fridge, but this is not easily accessible

William was probably the most attentive and friendly manager we have encountered in our six months of travelling around South East Asia. From the free drink on arrival to the excellent food served, to the help with activity bookings, to the all around welcoming presence, he really goes above and beyond. Rooms are cleaned daily, there is free mini golf and pool on site, and there's always a corny movie playing in the bar area during the afternoon. The hotel is only a 5-10 minute walk from the river front where most restaurants and bars are located, but there are some additional options on the same street too. The hotel is quiet and easy to get a good night's sleep in. Netflix in the room that actually works unlike most places was an added bonus to help escape the hot afternoons!

William was a very welcoming host. This place is quiet but an easy walking distance to everything you could want, including the riverside.

Nothing really.

William made us very welcome. Food was great + pool tables and crazy golf!

Nothing

Staff, under the guidance of the owner, William, was always on top of everything! A/C out? William was on the phone to the mechanic. Anything and everything relating to the guesthouse was overseen and handled efficiently. We had a four night stay and ate exclusively at the hotel. You will be hard pressed to find larger meals in Cambodia and everything was cooked to near perfection. Truly enjoyed our stay, William, and if we do anymore getaways to Kampot, you know where we will be staying! Side note: William, as some of you may know from the reviews, lived in Alaska. So did the wife some years ago and I and imagine our surprise on finding out that he knew my ex-boss! Gives new meaning to "It's a small world". LOL

The hotel was well presented and the room was very clean. Breakfast was excellent. The owner, William, put us in touch with Mr Phary as Tuk Tuk driver. +855 86 65 03 30. We’d definitely recommend using him. He did a great tour of salt fields, cave and secret lake. Also dropped us at pepper plantation which is definitely worth a visit. Mr Phary also took us to Kep the next day when we hiked in the Kep National Park which was amazing too.

Nothing

A beautiful house, seriously comfortable bed, top notch towels and sheets. The food is great, the location also and its run by a lovely man. I'd stay here again

Nice room and comfortable bed. Super friendly owner. Try the Super Taco, it's yummy!

The owner was full of energy and a great host. Mini golf was a nice addition my 4 year daughter enjoyed it. The food was good too. 5 minutes walk to Riverside/bar area so it was close enough but quiet too. I'd stay here again if I returned to kampot. The room was cleaned daily and spotless 😊

Everything was awesome. Mr. William is an awesome host. The room had everything we wanted. The food was very good. Minigolf was awesome. The location was great. Near the centre, near the river, very very close to a market.

One thing missing a bit is a fridge in the room. But considering the distance to the store this is not a significant problem.

Large, clean, peaceful room just 5 mins gentle stroll from town and river. Incredible food and service from William the host. Would thoroughly recommend

Great value for the price. A wonderful owner who goes out of his way to make his guests feel comfortable.

Two people, different breakfasts.ok.

No tv channel info!

Nice air conditioned room with comfy beds. Excellent service from William and his charming staff. Good food at reasonable prices and a good location convenient for Kampot centre and the Giant Ibis bus stop.I

Hard to think of anything really.

Nice building, good facilities, friendly staff. Reasonable prices for high quality food and drinks (English Breakfast was good). Will is extremely friendly and accommodating, if a little overboard.

Building turns into a locked compound at night and on Sunday afternoons (you get a key, it’s just a minor inconvenience to let yourself in and out). We booked the external bathroom room, which we knew in advance, but was still annoying.
