Dated decor, window rattling all night
Super hotel in a historical building with sweeping views across green valleys, & adjacent to Launceston's famous Norman Castle. Very good food (both breakfast and dinner), & very comfortable room with super bathroom. Highly recommend this hotel, which is also great value for money.
There was lots to like about this stay. Perfect location, easy to check-in, friendly staff, lovely outdoor space to have a drink, affordable and very tasty food. I stayed in a one-bedroom room and whilst small, I thought it was just so cosy.
The wi-fi in the room was really really poor. If I was staying more than one night I'd have to be asked to change room as it kept cutting out. Also, it feels as though the hotel might be the only nice place to drink in town as it became pretty rowdy in the evening with lots of young people. It didn't bother me too much, but I can imagine it would annoy some paying guests looking to have a quiet drink whilst enjoying the stunning views. Also my room was tucked away, some others might not be so lucky.
Staff attentive and very friendly. Evening meals good. Overall, nice and clean. Room comfortable with large bathroom. Location very good. Plenty of free car parking.
The hotel appearance inside and out is very tired and needs some attention. I should add that the hotel was originally built as an imposing Georgian Villa. New carpets, paintwork throughout, and new furniture in restaurant and bar areas overdue. Some of the bedroom furniture smelled musty. I genuinely don’t want to overplay any negativity, but the shabby chic vibe erred slightly on the side of shabby.
The staff were exceptionally good - very friendly, polite and helpful. The hotel is a historic building and retains much of its Georgian character.
The building needs some maintenance and in particular attention to the windows and doors. These are minor matters as far as its hotel function is concerned. The breakfasts were acceptable but could have been better. The vegan breakfast was very good.
Dinner was lovely and possibly too much to eat! Cider batter on fish was gorgeous and the steak tender and tasty! Lovely to watch the sun setting over the hills as we enjoyed our meal. Bed was large and comfy.Great view over the fields.
A new toaster for breakfast!
The staff member at breakfast was very friendly and helpful. I also noticed her jumping in when there seemed to be an issue with the coffee machine. Breakfast was well-prepared and came out swiftly.
The lack of indication where to park. The space directly in front of the building was fully occupied. I'd recommend putting a section on your website (with a satellite view picture!) to indicate where the dedicated parking is. I was told, but decided not to go there as it was a narrow allow with a sharp bend to the left. With a long-wheel-based van it wasn't something I fancied trying after a very long day.
The friendly staff, the area of the hotel being within the castle grounds. The breakfast. We was putting a room in the lower floor but it wasn't what we had expected so we asked for another room and they let us have the room at the top of the hotel,a bigger and more appealing room.
Nothing
Gorgeous building , friendly staff
Nothing
The staff were so helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was fantastic!
The stairs to the top floor!
The bed was very comfortable and the staff was great. English breakfast was good just needs some investment and updating. It was fair for the price. Late and early checkin/out was a great bonus
Dirty glasses and dirty table cloths in the dining room.
Really comfortable and very helpful staff.
Quite tricky to find in the dark.
Location, free parking, friendly & welcoming staff, good breakfast & dinner
The staff were incredibly helpful and polite.
Took me about 5 calls to eventually speak to someone.
Both breakfast and dinner were very good.
Bed could have been a little softer.
Location was brilliant just under the castle , brilliant outdoor terrace with good views . Food and service great
Shower in room was pitiful no pressure just a dribble
Amazing dinner- just PERFECT!!! And Bloody Mary - 11out of 10 !!! Staff very nice , views are breathtaking, very very comfy beds ( if you like hard mattress) nice note of the 300 year history of the building in a room
Breakfast bacon was like a leather sole , but the rest was really nice . At first glance of bathroom I was thinking it’s spotless- very shiny taps & radiator - perfect !,- but then checked the top of the mirror - quite a hard layer of dust :(
The Breakfast was excellent , as was dinner the night before .Staff were very friendly . The room was huge and comfy .
It looked a little tired and little run down, but value for money , it was
The location and views were fantastic staff mostly friendly and polite
Breakfast was very basic and very little choice. The coffee from the machine in the dining room was the weakest I’ve ever tasted. It wasn’t very pleasant. Get a new hot drinks machine
Staff were all so friendly and room felt clean
Beautiful building
The location
Thr room
Food was very good, especially the evening meals, which I had outside on the terrace watching sun go down. The team were friendly and accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble. They always said a cheery hello when passing. Bed was super comfy.
A place to spend a week!
Everything!
Breakfast was pretty standard but adequate. The location was excellent, right below the castle and two minutes’ walk from the town centre. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Friendly staff, comfortable and recently updated room. Great breakfast included so great value.
Great location by Launceston Castle and town centre. Lovely breakfast. Great views on balcony restaurant/bar was nice modern clean. Comfortable bed. Easy to park.
Room was dated but was a standard room but clean and fan didn't work but air con fan was put in room as well. Lovely building but needs some touch ups and some windows needed a clean. But overall a lovely hotel with lots of character.
Liked the location and building.
Tatty worn carpets and the interior needs a repaint. Not enough toilet roll in the room with no air con but for a plug in unit that made so much noise it has to be switched off. The sash window wouldn't open more than 4 inches so on a hot night it's not enough air into the room.
Excellent breakfast
Carpark needs attention
We had dinner here with friends which was amazing, my partner suffers with food allergies and the staff were brilliant, checking back with him on the changes they would make to his choice to accomodate his issues. Our room was comfortable and clean, maybe just a couple of homely touches, a picture on the wall and some colourful cushions to give it a bit of colour. will certainly be back
nothing
The hotel has a good sized carpark adjacent to the hotel. The staff are a young team of very competent young people who are polite and well trained.
Staff were friendly, caring and efficient. I was greeted and my bag carried to my room, which was very helpful. Super was an excellent bowl of home made soup. Breakfast was freshly cooked to order.
My room was small. Only a chair under a desk so I had to sit on the bed to relax, no casual chair because no space for it.
The location is terrific, personnel kind and available. Cold and hot breakfast was appreciated.
My single bed room was really tiny. Access to parking is inaccessible for motorbikes to the point that in trying to drive over the hill, two of us fell down. Need to be ameliorated.
Big bedroom, its character, setting with views
Breakfast room very hot
Food was v good
We had a v small room twin which was located at the top of the house in the heatwave. Even with the fan provided it was too hot and should not have been offered to customers
The architecture and character
Looks tired, needs some investment
Fantastic food, the patio was a treat to sit out on to enjoy dinner, staff excellent, beautiful building, ample parking and convenient to cowslip workshops
Bed very hard and room a bit noisy could hear traffic from main road, had a unintentional early start as woken up at 4am from people shouting outside and then couldn’t get back to sleep ( having just said that it was the England v Mexico match and we won so I suppose they were celebrating lol) at breakfast coffee machine had broken down, finally got a cup after breakfast was finished.
Food was very good. Staff very helpful and Pleasant. Comfortable room.
Access by steps into reception and rooms makes it difficult for elderly guests with mobility issues.
The staff and this venue could not have been more friendly and helpful. There is a wonderful terrace in the sun which is perfect for drinks and they make their own gin! We had a lovely big room, a big bed and lovely spacious bathroom.
The hotel can't help this, but the traffic noise carries quite a bit and we needed the windows open as it was warm. It didn't hamper our sleep, but it is very noticeable.
Looks very grand.
Lots of stairs and fire doors down to basement bedrooms. It would have been helpful if staff member had helped me with suitcase. My bedroom in the basement smelt damp.
The hotel looks lovely from the outside but inside it needs a bit of work. The rooms were nice enough but the dining area was a bit soulless, it was just a large room with tables spread around, there were white table cloths on the tables but no curtains or plants or anything to make the room inviting. The food was good (not excellent) and the staff were helpful. It was well placed if you wanted to visit the castle or to wander around the town.
It needs some improvement to the inside including decorating and making look more warm and inviting.
Beautiful old building and room, excellent breakfast, central to both coasts of eastern Cornwall.
Very nice oldy worldly house and room with everything we needed. The staff were amazing, we were running late due to multiple motorway crashes and delays, and they moved our restaurant reservation a few times to accommodate. The food was delicious and also the breakfast. I highly recommend and would stay again!
Perfect location to visit the castle the next day Lovely staff Comfy room
I had a reservation for the restaurant but it was so busy, no staff noticed me so I went elsewhere
Everything
Nothing
Lovely balcony to the bar. Helpful staff. Pleasant atmosphere
Continental breakfast options limited. A bit dated
I loved the age of the building the size of our room was more than big enough even though it was a standard double room
The shower wasn't the best as the shower head didn't hold up and was quite hot even on a low setting as we were only there for one night it wasn't too much of a problem
nice clean room and comfy bed
The noise of an extractor fan or something similar that was close to our room.
The service from the staff could have been a little better.
Very comfortable practical and efficient hotel. All aspect good. food, comfort, cleanliness, staff.
A bit difficult to find.
Location
Pleasant staff
Breakfast was great. Everything you needed Check in was good The room was clean and the bathroom new
I realise the difficulty of trying to run a hospitality unit now but if you can't repaint the front at least give the steps and entrance some TLC. Just ask where your bedroom is located. It was mid week so not a problem, but it was very close to the function room so could have been noisy. I'm assuming you'd be located elsewhere if there was. The bed wasn't particularly comfortable but the bedding was.
Beautiful property with plenty of parking. The Superior King room (room 5) had a four poster bed and lovely views. The staff were attentive and friendly. Dinner (steak) and breakfast were exceptional. Well worth the money. We'll be back!
I would have liked a blind on the bathroom window.
Locatie nabij centrum en park.
Niets
This place is a gem. The service from the staff is incredible. The view from the bar is amazing and would be stunning if it wasn’t raining when we visited . although the rooms are a little bit dated, I can highly recommend this to you.
Enterence & exterior vey tired. Access to hotel not easy to find
Friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere, good breakfast
Nothing
Bel endroit , dans une petite ville calme
Lage am Castle, gutes und modernes Restaurant
Zimmer unterm Dach- abgewohnt - uralt und keine Klimaanlage- unzumutbar, schlechtes Frühstück
Classical old building but elegantly decorated. A bit of maintenance needed but that didn't deter from it's character.
Nothing. All positives
The room and food was good
The room view was poor. A view of brambles out of the window was not nice
Very old historic building ..well presented as such ....
Really nice building, good facilities
Breakfast was good, the staff were very pleasant but the hotel seems a little tired. Our room was very small but also very clean, fine for one night but a longer stay would be difficult.
Good beds Lovely staff Lovely shower room
Cobwebs on windows - inside A bit tired
Clean with polite helpful staff really enjoyed our stay food cleanliness and tidy mess very satisfying stay
The food was absolutely delicious, both the main meal and breakfast. The duck was the best I have eaten in a long while. The staff were very accommodating changing my table for one out on the balcony terrace at the back. A lovely evening with a lovely view. When I was first sent downstairs and around the back of the function room and the toilets I was really worried but when I opened the door to my room..... It had a lovely view down the valley. It was bright, clean and with a huge bathroom with a walk in shower.
Trying to find my room past the function suite and all the loos. Maybe some room numbers and direction at the bottom of the stairs would have helped. A little further past my room on the left were some doors which lead out to a terrace, lovely I thought. But the entrance was surrounded with kegs, yard brushes and something sloshed over part of the floor. It looked like somewhere the staff might go for a cigarette break. I was hoping it led to the terrace bar.
Excellent breakfast with plenty of choice. Staff very attentive and super friendly. Great location with beautiful views from our room and outside terrace. Very special to be able to eat our lovely evening meal outside.
They could make more of the lovely outside terraces by paying extra attention to the cleanliness. Some decent parasols would benefit the atmosphere too, people were arguing over the 2 that were available! Guessing they were caught out by the good weather and not prepared but overall we had a lovely stay.
Room was in a noisy location. A nearby room was also very noisy from about 10 to 11.30pm
Room could have better furnished and finished. All a bit tired and tatty.
Lovely interior, spacious room, very clean, staff very friendly and helpful, fabulous breakfast.
Climbing the stairs at 70+ is hard work
Location was great Breakast was lovely we also got a upgrade which was a lovely surprise staff was fantastic
You didn't need to anything better it was all what we wished for
Nice light-filled room Good view. Comfortable bed. Well appointed modern showerroom. Comfortable , welcoming bar in modern extension, Terrace with great views. we Breakfast was well-prepared Buffet offered a wide choice Staff were friendly and efficient.
We were the only diners in the dining room. The diining room worked as a breakast room but lacked atmosphere in the evening, We would have been better off eating in the bar The dining room felt like eating in a corridor. Some of the paintwork needed a touch up. A screeen for a conference room was left leaning against the dining room wall which made the place feel a little unloved.
Very comfortable accommodation with good facilities. Nice views from the dining room. Friendly welcoming staff and an excellent breakfast
It was a great location. Really friendly and helpful staff. Plenty of parking (inc overflow) Really nice breakfast and lunch.
A bit tired in places but overall really nice.
The room was comfortable and clean. The staff were very friendly and helpfull.
Thebar shut a bit early.
Location
The rooms were cold, reported to staff and nothing changed.
Great place
Nothing
Quite a nice breakfast but no fresh fruit. Staff were helpful. The shower was very good.
Single bed a long way from bar & restaurant, with a noisy road early morning. A bit disappointed as this was not a cheap place to stay. Double beds are the norm these days, even if travelling alone. The room was tiny.
Friendly and comfortable clean room
None
Unfortunately nothing - I booked this location as was travelling to visit a poorly relative - I had arrived to my destination only to find out that the Hotel had no room for me. I had travelled 300 miles so this was a really bad situation to be faced with and furthermore disappointed that i had no apologies.
