We loved the location, this is a very special place with very helpful staff from the minute you arrive you are made to feel welcome
Nothing to dislike
Wonderful peaceful riverside hotel just a short train ride away from busy Kyoto. The food was so good and the whole experience. Many beautiful sites near by walking distance. Lots of riverside restaurants near by but the hotel riverside restaurant was great to enjoy without going any where. This family owned hotel was fabulous in every way. They helped us so much with our trip.
Just need some hooks in the room to hang wet raincoats on by the entrance but there may have been a place at the entrance I didn't see. Instructions on how to use the kettle in English.
It is so pretty and the staff was exceptional!
The mosquitos
L’emplacement
Amazing seeing on the river, the authentic rooms were really unique, great deal of hospitality from the staff they were so kind and helpful
The bathrooms are dated and could use an refresh
We loved the setting in the countryside next to a river and below a temple complex. The staff was wonderful and friendly. We told them where we were going after checkout and they drove us into town, helped us get a coin locker for our luggage, then dropped us off at our first shrine of the day--all free of charge. (They offered to take our luggage to our next hotel for 1000 yen per bag, but we went with the lockers instead.) The dinner by the river was a wonderful experience.
Leaving.
Everything, location, river view, 100 year old traditional property run by the same family across 4 generations, traditional room, Onsen, food (classic Japanese traditional cuisine), cleanliness, very kind owner, her son and all the staffs. Also to add definitely that they perfectly took care of our non standard dietary requirements.
Nothing, except a minor thing, not sure if that’s part of the tradition though, we felt there could be one full size mirror in the room.
The hostess and staff were really welcoming, you can really feel their hospitality. Also, the food was superb. Also, they manage to make the access easier with their shuttle. And the place is beautiful and tranquil.
Bathrooms werent my cup of tea and due to being winter, the room was cold during the night, even though the calefaction was trying to do its job.
The staff were so so kind and lovely. It was my birthday during the stay and the staff made me origami as a present! The hotel was in such a beautiful location and the food was some of the best we had during our whole holiday. Every meal we had there was exceptional, I would highly recommend including breakfast and dinner in your stay. It was such a relaxing, warming experience and I left feeling uplifted from the kindness and good sense of humour of the staff. There are lovely walks all around the hotel, with lots of temples also very close. It is in such beautiful scenery it was incredible. There was also a free shuttle bus down the mountain which was very helpful. We stayed for 2 nights and wished we stayed for longer!
Nothing!
Overraskende let at komme dertil med bus. Fantastisk smukke og rolige omgivelser. Imødekommende og varmt personale. Autentisk og tradiotionel mad. Shuttlebus-muligheder til stationer og seværdigheder.
Ældre faciliteter. Meget hård seng. Lidt uhumsk i den tilknyttede onsen.

During our stay, my mom and I truly experienced what authentic Japanese hospitality feels like. Even before we arrived, we could already sense the care from the staff, especially in how they helped us figure out the best way to get to the hotel. On our first night, our taxi driver accidentally dropped us off at the wrong hotel because I had entered an unclear drop-off location in the GO app. It was late and we were in a mountain area, but the staff kindly came to pick us up and quickly drove us back to the correct hotel. We were so grateful for their help. The next morning left a lasting impression on us. The dining hall overlooked the mountains and river, with sunlight streaming through the large windows. Guests quietly enjoyed a homemade Japanese breakfast, creating a peaceful and warm atmosphere. The staff welcomed us with genuine kindness, and every dish was delicious, even the steamed rice stood out. Whenever we had questions about transportation, the staff were always there to assist us. Their attentiveness made us feel truly cared for, which meant so much, especially while traveling overseas without knowing anyone. I only wish I had brought a small gift to express my gratitude. Next time, if I have a chance to visit Kyoto again, I will definitely remember to bring a token of appreciation.
While the hotel has a charming atmosphere, some of the facilities feel a little dated. As someone who is sensitive to lighting, I personally prefer warmer tones, so I think slightly softer, warmer lighting in the hallways could make the space feel even cozier and more in harmony with the beautiful surroundings outside.
The TOTAL TRADITIONAL JAPANESE EXPERIENCE which is getting harder to find the staff were more than amazing so much beautiful traditional Japanese food they don’t hold back on giving you their all. It all felt like a dream we hope to come back soon 🥰
Nothing
Idyllic setting away from the crowds. Shuttle service provided from the hotel. Evening meal was excellent and served by friendly staff.
I enjoyed the whole experience.
The best service so far: they wanted to help with everything they could think of! Very cool breakfast and the location looks very cozy, like in Ghibli movie. Totally recommend!
Clean
Good for relaxing
It had a traditional charm
Not much to not like
Staff were amazing, very family friendly. Highly recommend to get the package with breakfast and dinner because the food were top notch. Highly enjoyed our stay.
Nothing to complain about.
Beautiful, tranquil and very traditional.
You may need to ask for extra futon to sleep comfy on the floor!
Overall it was an outstanding and authentic Japanese experience. Very quiet, tranquil Ryokan in the middle of the mountains. Strongly recommend going for the full package with dinner and breakfast. Meals were delicious, and allowed us to experience the joy of the spring season. I'll definitely be back for the summer.
Fabulous location. The traditional room was clean, comfortable and quiet. Above all, the staff were incredibly kind, helpful, friendly and experienced. Wonderful breakfast and onsen.
Not applicable.
We had a fantastic stay and felt very well looked cared for by the dedicated staff who are clearly proud of their hotel. The traditional dinner and breakfast were both amazing and a highlight of our trip. The complimentary shuttle bus to the JR line was also a very thoughtful and convenient addition.
The staff were amazing, felt we had a truly traditional Japanese experience with the wearing of yukata and our first onsen bathing. The evening meal was exceptional being treated to a delicious taster menu. The homemade plum wine was to die for. The breakfast was outstanding. The hosting was superb and we appreciated the free shuttle to the station
At first sight the hotel looks a little shabby, although the location is amazing next to the river.
Authentique , personnel très agréable et serviable , confortable.
Un peu cher pour les repas.
Excellence Service. Staff are very nice. polite smiling caring
Absolutely stunning location! A bit out of the city but not terribly far and so worth it. Really nothing bad I can say about the place: staff were terrific, the rooms were beautiful and comfortable, and the food was tremendous!
Dinners were a little more expensive than I’d have liked, but the food and service was so good that I can’t say it wasn’t worth it.
The staff, breakfast and location were the best parts about this day, but especially the staff!!! Super welcoming and hospitable. They really look out for you.
Absolutely lovely place. We visited during the off-season (February) and it was completely empty. The staff were friendly and always ready to help us with anything we needed - from recommending attractions to giving us a lift. The perfect ryokan if you want a quiet, nature-filled getaway. The facilities, including the onsen, are a little old but serve their purposes well; the futons are very comfortable and there's plenty to explore inside and beyond the place.
Loved our stay here during Winter. The meals were excellent and the staff were very friendly. The room was a little snug for a family of 4 but we managed.
The whole experience was fantastic, the place, the hospitality, the dining experiences, the authenticity.
The instructions on the onsen were a little unclear. We would've used it but it was cold
Being in the country side of Japan was great!
Options for western food would have been good since there aren't restaurants near by.
Staff went above and beyond to ensure comfort. Always helpful with transportation too!
The location is not close to Gion but we wanted the full ryokan experience and we were prepared for the commute.
The location was so peaceful and beautiful - so green! The views from our room were amazing. The traditional Japanese breakfast was delicious, some of the best food I’ve had while in Japan.
Lovely staff, comfortable room and very good good
Beautiful hosts and incredible food, possibly the best food we have had in Japan. Very traditional dinner and breakfast which was so appreciated and an incredible experience, one we will treasure forever.
The property is a little tired and the bathrooms and onsen may need some work.
The meals were excellent. Dinner and breakfast
The hotel was incredibly welcoming, especially for our late arrival, and the staff went out of their way to help with parking, check-in, and our baby. Our room was spacious and beautifully traditional with tatami floors, futons, low table, slippers, and bathrobes. The in-room dinner was fantastic, home-cooked with plenty of options, and the staff were attentive, kind, and spoke excellent English. Communication before and after our stay was fast and helpful.
Our stay was very short and we didn’t take advantage of the onsen, breakfast, or the full hotel experience — any limitations were entirely due to our schedule, not the property.
Had really enjoyable time, best dinner btw
Dinner and breakfast was unexpectedly good , interesting and generous. We loved the authentic 1960's feel of the hotel and its decore. I liked that there was no television The location was unique and superb and our mid-November visit ensured we saw the best of the autumn colors of the surrounding forest park
We should have stayed longer
It is a family run hotel and the people who run it are very friendly and wonderful. The people are really the best part of the stay. They came out to wave good bye to us when we got on the shuttle back to Arashiyama. The 10 course kaiseki was truely wonderful, it is one of the best we had. The breakfast was also 10 out of 10. Bedding was clean and comfortable. (traditional style on the floor) The surrounding nature and trails are great (they are steep steps to be aware of, not relaxing hiking trails). Being by the river is very relaxing. There is also a small kids play room with toys and pretend theatre we enjoyed a lot.
Unfortunately, the property is very run down, this made the stay non comfortable. It was a striking contrast compared to everywhere else in Japan we stayed. There is no investment into renovation or making the rooms/washrooms/onsen comfortable. Things were old, there was unpleasant smell in the bathrooms/onsen. The feeling of the property being neglected felt strange to us and we did not receive what we were hoping for - a comfortable, pleasant stay at a traditional ryokan. The location is far from Arashiyama (20 min by taxi), so if the goal is to explore Arashiyama, we suggest staying in Arashiyama directly. The hotel did provide a free shuttle bus back and offered a free pick up at the bus station. There was also a large bug that came through the window that we chased all night - he kept coming back - but you are in the nature.
Everything was amazing! Personal was very friendly and polite, 懐石料理( kauseki) was gorgeous!! Tge sane about breakfast Very cozy and authentic room. Wonderful view on the river…
I liked each moment of staying there
Owner and staff of the hotel were beyond friendly and helpful. The gentleman at the front desk gave us really good advise on where to visit to avoid crowds. Views were spectacular and the food was delicious.
We had a great stay! Public bath could use some updating but was still functional.
The staff were amazing. Helpful and friendly. The position was perfect for walking, out of the city and totally in the countryside. A beautiful setting.
It needed a bit of TLC. Everything worked but looked a little bit tired. The price reflects the standard so you pay for what you get. It was excellent value for money.
Loved the staff. Our room faced the river and the area and temples were great to explore. The food was pricey, but phenomonal! The beds were incredibly comfortable. The building is very old and has a rustic feel to it.
Hotel pięknie położony wśród wzgórz nad rzeką. Blisko przepiękne świątynie. Śniadanie jest super doświadczeniem tradycyjnej kuchni. Pokój spory, klimatyczny, bardzo polecam, aby doświadczyć tradycyjnego stylu noclegu i piękna okolicy.
Service! Location Food
Dated facilities
This hotel is located in the hills outside Kyoto. It is easily accessible from Kyoto Station by a direct bus (~50mn), and a hotel shuttle picked us up at the bus stop for the remaining short distance. Note: The hosts provided us with detailed information about the different ways to access the hotel. They also responded efficiently and quickly to all our questions during trip preparation. The hotel is situated in a quiet, secluded area, which was very peaceful after experiencing the bustling life of Tokyo and Osaka. Just behind the hotel, there is access to a site with magnificent temples and a viewpoint overlooking the mountains, we were almost alone there, a stark contrast to Kyoto’s other crowded sites. The staff are extremely attentive and kind, we greatly appreciated their warm welcome and excellent service throughout our stay. We also loved the authentic experience, including the provision of yukata robes, the ryokan’s public baths, and the meals (dinner and breakfast), which were outstanding and full of new discoveries. The hotel retains its original character, likely dating from the 1960s or 70s, but it was very clean and had a certain charm. We only have one regret: not having spent more time at this establishment.
Takeo Kanko is in a truly beautiful location. We loved hearing the river flowing from our room and looking out on a view of trees and river. The rooms were traditional tatami rooms and the beds were very comfortable. It was easy to relax and unwind here. The staff were all fabulous, making us feel so welcome. It's a little slice of paradise. Being able to sit by the river to dine was an absolute treat. Highly recommend walking up the long and winding stairway behind the accomodation to the Jingo-ji temple and taking in the view of the valley from the observation point. It is magic.
The building is dated and a bit musty but it's all part of the charm.
This hotel is an absolute gem. Located in the woods next to a small river, it is a really tranquil location. The hotel staff is one of the nicest and friendliest I have ever come across. The rooms have a really authentic vibe, and I slept so good in the fresh air and the sound of the river. Breakfast and dinner are also very good, the food is wonderfully presented. Thanks for a wonderful experience!
Nothing
Amazingly beautiful location and exceptionally hospitable hosts!
-
Excellent service from the staff. Food was delicious. Free shuttle back to the station.
The accomodations are very dated. There was a strong musty odor in the room which was unpleasant. Looks like the place was built in the 80s and never updated.
Die Lage
Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis nicht angemessen, Essen lieblos zurecht gemacht, hektisches Personal
