Onsen
Location is far. While this was known so can't fault them, it only becomes really evident when there. Check-in took over 30 minutes because front desk had one poorly organised staff member. Dinner was really poor in terms of quantity, quality, and selection. The dinner staff were particularly uninterested, didn't explain anything, didn't offer any drink. The little meat there was was extremely overcooked, and everything else was bland. I did complain to the manager and his only explanation is that foreigners have different tastes and can't expect to understand the Japanese flavours... The images everywhere sell a nice grilled meat option but he told me it was only available to guests staying minimum of 2 nights. I didn't see this mentioned anywhere. Finally, they were completely unwilling to provide an option for takeaway breakfast, citing health and safety reasons, which is a first in my life... It was as if I had asked him to prepare raw fish and leave it out in the front desk all night... The town is really not interesting, and this place is poorly located if you want to use Kiso-Fukushima as a base. I can see why people might like it and have a different experience, but mine was sadly bad from start to finish
We really enjoyed our stay at Nukumorino-yado Komanoyu. It’s around a 20-minute drive from Kiso-Fukushima, but the ryokan offers a shuttle service and we were picked up directly outside Kiso-Fukushima Station, which made getting there very easy. One of the highlights was our room. We loved the mix of traditional Japanese design with modern comforts, particularly the tatami, beautiful use of wood throughout and the overall layout. It felt spacious, warm and very relaxing. Being able to connect to YouTube on the TV was also a surprisingly nice touch after a long day exploring the Kiso Valley! We slept really well. The dinner was probably the standout experience for us. I’m vegetarian and the ryokan tailored both dinner and breakfast for me, with no meat or fish. This can sometimes be difficult to arrange at traditional ryokans in Japan, so I really appreciated the effort they made. Rather than simply removing dishes, I was given a proper multi-course meal with lots of different flavours and textures. I particularly enjoyed the tofu dishes, tempura, soba and the small local-style dishes. Everything was beautifully presented and it felt like I was still getting the full ryokan dining experience. My husband eats meat, so he was able to enjoy the standard menu alongside my vegetarian version. We also booked one of the private onsens, which was perfect for us as a couple. The mineral water had a distinctive brown colour and the whole experience felt wonderfully relaxing and private. Overall, this was a lovely place to stay while exploring the Kiso Valley. The combination of the beautiful Japanese interiors, private onsen, very comfortable night's sleep, excellent food and the care taken to accommodate a vegetarian diet made it particularly memorable. I’d definitely recommend it, especially to vegetarian travellers who want to experience a traditional ryokan meal.
The shoes that we had to wear outside of our rooms were a small fit and I ended up going barefoot with just my socks down to the dinner hall.
The onsen was so nice, especially the outdoor bath. The room was also so nice and dinner and breakfast was so delicious!
The whole property felt a a little tired like it hadn't been updated in 30 years, while remaining in very good condition overall
Lovely property in a natural setting at a great price. Starry night trip is a highlight even if they don’t speak English
Nothing. Very cute. It would have been nice to have someone speak English a bit better but when in Japan
It is a calm, peaceful location, by a river, we had a small waterfall just outside our window. It is neat and tidy although some areas need attention, eg worn carpets and marks on walls, but overall quite a smart impression. Meals are fun, local produce and staff very friendly. We stayed 2 nights and things became a bit familiar food wise, we observed most people only stayed for one night. There’s no western breakfast which was fine for us but may put some people off. Beer and local sake is excellent! We were picked up from Kiso station and returned there, communication beforehand was not very good compared to what we expect, that’s the main improvement I’d suggest (clearer comms comms to visitors). Plus I couldn’t get coffee after our evening meal even though it was only 8pm, but I survived! Private Onsen is bookable when you arrive and worth doing; public Onsen split by sexes has indooor and outdoor pools which were amazing but be prepared for nudity!
Overall we did love this place, it is greater than the sum of its parts….each bit is excellent esp. the Onsens but it’s slightly let down by bad comms and faded nature of some rooms.
Good value for money. The dinner was one of the best we had. The private onsen is very good
The property needs some renovation.
Beautiful quiet location, great service, good food, outdoor onsen pool !
Noisy guests

Beautiful calm retreat in nature

Beautiful location, staff was amazing. Onsen was very nice.
The facility is a little old.
The hotel was a lovely, traditional-style ryokan with simple rooms. The onsen facilities were nice with both inside and outside onsens as well as reservable private onsens and nice products in the shower. Dinner and breakfast were exceptional with lots of seasonal ingredients. The hotel offers shuttle service to and from Kiso-Fukushima train station.

The hotel is located near Kiso-Fukushima town and has very nice gardens. Unfortunately, the building we stayed in was not just dated—it was poorly maintained and felt quite unclean. Dinner was quite good. However, there were no Western breakfast options, and guests were not allowed to bring any outside food into the restaurant. We only wanted to have some yogurt and coffee, so we decided to cancel breakfast and received a small refund. Our room was nice and clean, but the mattresses were of poor quality and quite uncomfortable.
The inside of the building. Sleep quality.
the food is great, very friendly staff. love the galaxy show
The atmosphere of a traditional onsen inn like this is truly unmatched. It is a must have experience when you visit Japan.
We really enjoyed the traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast. The meals were generous, with a wide variety of dishes, and the hotel is surrounded by beautiful scenery.
Our room was located in the oldest part of the building, which felt very dated and poorly maintained. The condition of the area was disappointing, with peeling plaster visible on the walls. The room itself was also old and worn, and it would greatly benefit from renovation.
Delicious meals and a nice outdoor onsen and a nice private onsen. The location was a fun place to explore local spots. The staff was friendly and kind.
Our room felt a little tired, nice traditional Japanese space but a bit musty. We were in the annex. We did love the operable windows and the sound of the creek lulled us to sleep.
Beautiful surroundings, cosy and large rooms and the outdoor public onsen was lovely. The room had all the necessary amenities and WiFi was solid. There’s a little library open for guests and it has loads of books / manga (all in Japanese). A drinks vending machine is available. We paid for half board with the room and found it well worth the price - we really enjoyed the dinner service (lots of variety and good amount of vegetables/protein). We were both full (we are pretty good eaters!) and breakfast was very nice as well. The staff were very hospitable from booking to checkout. We took them up on their offer to go star gazing - they did warn us that it might be a cloudy night and although we couldn’t see much or understand the guide (Japanese) but I could tell he was very enthusiastic about the stars! He showed us photos that he had taken on a clear night and it was still a magical excursion to be standing on a hilltop surrounded by the sounds of nature with glimpses of the moon.
The hotel is definitely aged and in need of some repair in some of the public/connecting spaces/corridors, cracked window panes, really worn out couches and stained/damp carpets. Somehow though, tho ryokan is still very charming. I think it’s because the areas we spent the most time in, like our rooms, the dining area and public onsen were very clean and well maintained.
Wonderful experience. Location is beautiful. Food was delicious and rooms were incredibly comfortable and spacious. The pictures are very true to the experience. This was very relaxing and a real treat. Would repeat again if I am lucky to be in this area again. Outdoor onsen in the rain was lovely.
Nothing
The kaiseki dinner & Japanese breakfast was lovely and the rooms big & comfortable. The Onsen was welcomed after being in the rain all day
Amazing location, the room was spectacular.
The rooms were spacious and the futons were comfortable. The meals were delicious and plentiful.
It was remote but I appreciated the free shuttle buses.
We had such a wonderful experience this ryokan. It was a family run business and everyone was so kind and respectful. The location was lovely and quiet by a river. We saw some snow monkeys walking up the path from the hotel to a view point to some snow caped mountains. The dinner was this delicious multiple course menue with so much attention to detail and love! It was my best stay-in food experience ever! The staff showed so much respect to thei culture and were so patience. We absolutely loved our experience and so full of gratitude for the love we received!
Nothing
The traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast were truly excellent, carefully prepared, and definitely one of the highlights of the experience. The private onsen was pleasant, and the overall atmosphere was quiet and relaxing. The staff were kind and welcoming throughout the stay.
Negative: Overall, the stay did not fully meet the expectations that led us to make a special detour during our trip in order to experience an authentic ryokan stay. The property felt rather dated and somewhat worn in certain areas, especially compared to what we expected from the photos and reviews. The private onsen experience also felt too limited, as the available time was less than one hour, making it difficult to fully relax and enjoy it properly. While the location is quiet and outside the town center, it is not immersed in a particularly unique natural setting, as reaching it involves passing through residential towns and industrial areas in a hilly region. Overall, it was a decent stay with excellent food, but we personally expected something more special and refined for this type of experience.
Beautiful inn in a picturesque valley. Very attentive and helpful staff. Many spoke English. The meals were very good and substantial in size. The baths include an indoor pool and outdoor rotenburo. The rooms are a modern take on traditional Japanese inns. They offer a nighttime star viewing putting depending on the weather. A shuttle bus is available to and from the train station which is very convenient.
Not much that I can think of.
Now that is in a quiet area in the woods. Near to kisso village. Nice private and public onsen. Stuff is looking for any assist they can give. Dinner was japanese local dishes from local ingredients, as well as breakfast
Room was old and futons were not comfort Same for the shower.
Nice and clean ryokan style rooms with all amenities included. Good location in the forest. Kind and helpful personnel. Nice traditional breakfast and dinner. Private Onsen included in the price and it was perfect experience. There is free transportation from ant to train station.
Dinner was amazing! The place is fascinating!
We had the most fantastic stay here last night. It's in the most idyllic location. The hotel is beautiful, clean, and offers both a public and private onsen experience, as well as free transfers to and from the train station, and star gazing at night. The food was INCREDIBLE - both at dinner and breakfast! - and the staff so kind and accommodating. I truly can't recommend this hotel enough! A highlight and the best night of our trip to Japan.
Amazing staff, welcoming and helpful. Can't speak highly enough of the food and service, comfortable rooms and beds, shuttle service. Amazing!!
Absolutely nothing.
Our best stay and some of our best bites in Japan. Could not fault this place, from the incredibly warm welcome to the excellent food and comfortable rooms. Would recommend 10/10.
Good value traditional Ryokan in the beautiful Japanese Alps. Staff was so friendly and helpful. Food was exceptional. Rooms were large and clean. And Onsens, both private and public, were perfect. Also the added bonus of going star gazing with a true expert.
Nothing apart from the location. It is up in the hills so a car is would be useful if you want to explore the area.
They have a private onset. You can book it when you arrive. The dinner was amazing. The service and attention were also superb.
There was only 1 towel in the room
Udover public onsen, tilbød stedet ligedes privat onsen (inklusiv i prisen). Alt i alt super godt!!!

Vi kunne lide det hele
The location was exceptional. It was amazing to experience a typical Japanese hotel, with a large and confortable room. We loved the star gazing experience and the onsen. The food was extraordinary. The staff has been more than helpful and very communicative. This holiday has been a needed calming break from busy cities. I would definitely recommend the experience!
One must be ready for a vintage experience with slightly worn out furniture, but it adds to the charm of the place.
A beautiful hotel in the peaceful hills above Kiso. The staff were exceptionally welcoming and helped us with whatever we needed. Amazing food, fantastic onsen (particularly the outside public onsen) and the stargazing trip was a wonderful addition. We enjoyed our stay here so much and would definitely come again! Thank you!
Wonderful family style ryokan nestled in the mountain forest with lovely staff, delicious food and a peaceful outdoor onsen underneath beautiful trees. You felt personally very well taken care of as this is a relatively small ryokan so the staff know you and you have the hot spring bath to yourself mostly. The staff also organized a lovely stargazing activity with binoculars and telescopes.
The food was exceptional five star quality we were blown away
Our room was a little bit tired looking
Food was fantastic, rooms were spacious and bath was incredible. The star viewing experience was also great!!
Nice to have a private onsen bath. Fantastic dinner and breakfast with great service.
We immensely enjoyed our stay at Nukumorino-yado Komanoyu. From check-in to check-out the staff were lovely, always available to help, and very personal. We had both breakfast and dinner during our stays and they were some of our favorite meals in Japan by far...all unique, thoughtful, authentic. The private and public onsens at this inn are the best we experienced and are very well maintained. We went on the starry night tour which was another highlight of our trip and this inn. I can't say this enought but Nukumorino-yado Komanoyu is one of our favorite accommodations we stayed at during our time in Japan. Note that we did have a car so it wasn't an issue to arrive nor explore the surrounding areas, but know that it is a bit away from the towns. However the inn does offer transportation services (for pick-up or drop-off) which can help guests without a car explore the area and arrive without stress. A note on the establishment itself - yes it's a bit shabby (I saw others comment on this and was a bit worried) but honestly, it's true to itself and humble. We grew to love it a lot and compared to other inns we stayed at, we preferred this authentic hospitality and team to other more touristy and showy inns. We will surely recommend this inn to others and come here again in the future! Thank you so much Nukumorino-yado Komanoyu.
The food was absolutely from another planet. We cunted in one of the meals, 18 small dishes per person! Also there are activites run by the hotel lie sky gazing it was beautiful. Also the Onsen, really a unique experience.
Beautiful location and wonderful onsen, both private and public. The front desk staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The food was amazing.
We stayed in the older building and the rooms are badly in need of a renovation.
Hilfsbereites Personal, kostenloses Shuttle vom Bahnhof, Stargazing Tour, hervorragendes japanisches Abendessen bzw.
The private onsen experience was wonderful as was the dinner, but the accomodation price was a bit too expensive for what it covered.
Price did not match the room, too expensive.
The area is amazing in the middle of mountain. The facility has everything. They took me from the Kiso Station and it is very easy to go to Kiso by Limited Express trains from Nagoya. The dinner was amazing, the onsen too! They are very nice, you can also get free private onsen. It was a very relaxing stay
Nothing
Exceptional traditional Japanese dinners Very nice staff Shuttle service made getting there and back into town easy

In the evening we were taken to the top of the mountain by bus to look at the stars. The guide was very knowledgable and we got to see the rings of Saturn using the telescope he set up. The onsen is super relaxing and the meals are amazing.
The atmosphere was great, the staff was really friendly and caring, we got upgraded to a suite that was stunning. The men onsen was just what we needed after a half marathon hike
Some of the walls in the general areas could use some refurbishing
The onsen and the stargazing tour organised by the hotel.
Generally the cleanliness of the room was acceptable except that the building was kinda old.
