Hjelle Hotel

I had a wonderful three nights here with my family in June. This is a special hotel right on the lake. We loved the history of the hotel and the beauty all around. The meals in the beautiful dining room were excellent and everyone that works there is very friendly and helpful. We lucked out with clear sunny weather and walked to a waterfall and hiking trails right from the hotel. Hjelle was the highlight of our two-week trip in Norway. Also very convenient that they have electric car chargers for our rental car. Thank you for having us!

Beautiful location and lots of history. Owner is wonderful. Only down side is that we came late in the season (mid September) and some of the other dining options close by were closed. Found some good places in Stryn (30 minute drive). Loved the book of suggested hikes in the area - make sure that you follow instructions/direction carefully.

The hotel is in a beatiful place. The envirronment is nice and quiet.

Super cute family owned hotel. Beautiful location on the lake. Evening dinner made by the family was very delicious. If we are ever in the area again we would definitely stay here.

We had the most wonderful stay at the Hjelle Hotel. A must if you are in the area. The dinner each night was incredible, all food made with local ingredients and so delicious. Our 9 month old was with us and the owners went out of their way to accommodate her and provide what we needed. Also, the views from the hotel grounds are out of this world. We hope to come back one day- our stay here was a highlight of our trip to Norway.

Dejlig beliggenhed og smuk udsigt ud over søen fra hotelværelset. Skøn morgentur. Skønt at møde rigtig værtspar i receptionen der er arrangeret i hotellet og go til at give ideer til hvad man kan fortage sig i området.

Haben im Motel übernachtet. Zimmer sind sehr sauber und modern, Zimmerwände sind aber etwas dünn, man kann den Nachbarn schnarchen hören. Frühstück ist auch in Ordnung, wenn auch nicht ganz so reichhaltig wie an anderen Orten.

Sehr gutes Abendessen, auch das Frühstück war sehr lecker und abwechslungsreich. Die Aussicht ist der Hammer. Definitiv eine Weiterempfehlung, auch wenn das ganze Gebäude nicht neu ist.

Historisk hotell i sveitserstil. Fikk et av de største rommene i romantisk stil med balkong og utsikt mot vann og fjell. Sengene var gode, romslig bad med god plass til toalettsaker. Litteratur på rommet « tips om hva gjøre lokalt og med bil innen en time». Rommet var rent. Restauranten hadde nydelig lokal mat. Vertskapet introduserte middagen med hva vi fikk å spise samt historien om hotellets opprinnelse og utvikling. Beliggenheten, helt ypperlig blant fjord og fjell.

I never leave reviews but Hjelle hotel was simply outstanding. Beautiful location right on a picturesque lake, and very friendly staff/owners. They were even willing to do my laundry for a small fee.

Magnifique hôtel et environnement exceptionnel. Le cadre est sympathique, la décoration est raffinée et respecte l'architecture du bâtiment. Le motel, bien que plus simple, est un endroit agréable et confortable pour y séjourner. Le personnel est avenant.

A truly stunning 150 year old hotel with tonnes of original features. The owners were on hand the whole time keeping everything running smoothly. The view and location was a sight to behold - just breathtaking. If you want to sit quietly and read or swim, sauna or use the rowing boat it is all there for everyone. Would love to return some day for longer.

This find was a diamond!! The location was so quiet, the views were like living in a painting, and the food was simply delicious. Paying extra for the dinner was one of our better decisions. Truly the best setting and experience we’ve almost ever had!!!

Wir wurden herzlich empfangen, in diesem kleinem charmanten Hotel in Hjelle. Gebucht hatten wir ein Zimmer im Nebengebäude, quasi ein Motelzimmer mit eigenem, ebenerdigen Zugang, mit traumhaften Blick auf den See und die Berge. Das Gebäude ist zwar auch alle, war aber renoviert und damit auf der Höhe der Zeit. Das Zimmer selbst ist eher klein, aber fein, mit ansprechendem Duschbad und einem guten Bett und alles ist sehr sauber. Das gute Frühstück, im Haupthaus, hatte eine kleine aber feine Auswahl und sehr leckeres Brot!

The hotel, staff, food and the VIEW was amazing. The rooms were clean and fresh. We spent two nights at Hjelle and we enjoyed every second. We will come back to visit Hjelle again in the future.

Quiet location, great scenery. Good food. For dinner, choice of eat at hotel, or at local place. At hotel, price was a little high, but good.

This is my favorite place we stayed while in Norway. Would definitely go back and stay for more than just one night. What a lovely experience! Room was excellent and the view was outstanding! Life should be lived at this pace! Food was delicious and personable service was remarkable. Felt like family!!

We were treated very well. The scenery is so amazing. The morning breakfast just awesome.

We (myself, husband and toddler) stayed for 3 nights in late May 2025. It was a last minute booking for an impromptu trip to Norway. We had no issues with late check in or late check out. The view and setting of this place are 12/10; the pics speak the truth! It is situated ~23 min from Stryn and ~60min from Geiranger. It was an excellent home base. The grounds are well kept. We stayed in the old historic building. It was a bit tight to leave the suitcases open and walk around in The Wilhelmina suite. The balcony had an amazing view. There was a mini fridge. No safe (no hotels on our trip had a safe). The springwater bathtub and heated bathroom floors were a nice touch. The bathroom curtains were shorter than the window and also sheer. Given that a small portion of the view includes a parking lot and the cafe, we did improvise by putting decorative cushions on the window sill for our comfort. The host was the most helpful person we have come across on a trip; he helped us make plans for all 3 days and they worked out for us. He helped us with alternative plans when it rained. We were going to run out of clean clothes and he was able to arrange laundry for us for a neglible fee. The breakfast was on par with similarly reviewed hotels in W Norway. Breakfast is held in a large food hall with views of the lake and mountains. They had toys my toddler loved. It is a beautiful family run place away from the crowds and with lots of character. Definitely a must stay!

In terms of the setting and the friendly welcome, this was one of the loveliest hotels I've ever stayed at. It's off the main road, right on the shore of the fjord, with sensational views and is incredibly tranquil and welcoming. I look forward to staying there again - I didn't want to leave

Beautiful historic hotel with fabulous traditional service and the most beautiful location by the lake. We throughly enjoyed our spacious room, the numerous local walks and hikes, and the courteous and polite service by all working in the hotel. Dinner was delicious particularly the trout main course.

It is beautiful place.

Beautiful setting on the point of a lake with glacier capped mountains across. The room was great and the breakfast service included was delicious with lots of options. There is electric vehicle charging on site, too. I wish we had longer to stay in this beautiful location.

The place is incredible. It is in the middle of a fjord and you see glaciers and it is just so cozy and confy you want to stay a lifetime there. You have a game area, super nice living rooms and the food us super good. Cheers to Lorentz who hosted us!

Nice service, nice food, nice views. A perfect place to enjoy and relax. We had an inconvenient during dinner (our fault) and the personal sorted it out immediately. The breakfast is great, with the best butter and bread I have ever had. Waking up in such a beautiful place is definitely a privilege.

What a charming place! The rooms were so cute and comfortable. The staff was wonderful. Food was good. It is set in the most picturesque little spot. We loved everything about it!

Our stay was a little like going back in time but in a good way. The room was charming but had a modern bath and a beautiful view. The dinner and breakfast were fresh, local, simple, food. The location at the edge of the fjord was amazing. All the staff but especially the owner Lorentz and a lovely woman who checked us in and told us about a few local walks.

We have wanted to stay at this hotel for years and so happy we finally did. The hotel holds so much history and is still in operation by the founding Hjelle family. The owners were incredible hosts. The sauna was an added touch. A beautiful breakfast spread and an onsite cafe/shop open during the day. Great pizza and sandwiches. Lovely little beach on site. Absolutely beautiful property and lake. Close proximity to Loen with lots to do.

Amazing hotel location, right by the lake. So quiet and peaceful location. The staff members were friendly however not flexible enough to accommodate special needs of guests such as timing of the dinner and dietary restrictions. Overall enjoyed our stay in this beautiful hotel, highly recommended.

If you look away from all the beautiful surroundings at Hjelle Hotel, this hotel has a typical average Norwegian hotel standard, and I would only give it two stars: 1: The dinner was not more than average, breakfast was not more than one star. 2: The wine menu was very limited. 3: The chairs in the restaurant were hard and very uncomfortable. 4: The bedroom was cheaply furnished and had double beds that slide apart in the night. 5: The bathroom, with its white tiles everywhere, looked like a bathroom in a hospital. 6: The bathroom in our room had no ventilation 7: There was no full figure mirror in the room This hotel has a big potential with its great surroundings!

The history and quaintness was perfect for an authentic Norway holiday. We loved their breakfast served in the morning also. We had a balcony room and it had an amazing view of the water. My husband and I stayed at the Hjelle Hotel in September 2023 right before they closed for the season. I am so glad we did! We loved everything about this hotel. We had a beautiful view of the lake with a balcony. The surroundings are so beautiful and peaceful. Glad we paid extra for the room with the view. We ate at the hotel restaurant several nights. These were the best meals we had during our time in Norway. The best part of our stay was the hospitality of the owner Lorenz and his staff. Lorenz was kind and welcoming and always ready to give suggestions for hikes and places to visit in the area. His staff was friendly and efficient. We enjoyed getting to know them as well. Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer. If we had it to do again we would have shortened our stay in Bergen to add more nights at the Hjelle Hotel.

We loved our time at the Hjelle Hotel!! It was our favorite place in Norway. We only wished we had been able to stay longer. The location is absolutely beautiful. Nothing like looking out your window and seeing the beautiful lake and mountains. Lorenz and his staff were kind and welcoming hosts. We ate several meals at the hotel restaurant and everything was delicious. I highly recommend this hotel!

Great hotel with personal attention from owner. Real hospitality. No wonder that our late queen Wilhelmina enjoyed this hotel for so many years.

I'd have to say the setting of this property is spectacular. I was in awe soaking in the beauty surrounding us. There are nice walks nearby that allow you to absorb it all. The motel room was adequate and small but the walls were thin and we could hear the others next door. Another person staying there said the hotel rooms on the top floor are quieter. We enjoyed the breakfast and ping pong table and would love to return again in the future.

Ved innsjekk ble vi møtt av en særdeles hyggelig hotelleier. Viste seg i tillegg at vi hadde fått øverste karnapp værelse og sannsynligvis beste hotellrommet de hadde. Stor romslig balkong med fantastisk utsikt - stort bad og nydelig himmelseng. Vi fikk også reservert bord i restauranten og fikk nydelig tre-retter meny servert med vindusbord. Overnattet her i fjor også og akkurat like trivelig og pent som sist. Overnatter mer enn gjerne her igjen !

Beautiful scenery, yummy food, good service

This was our favorite stay of our entire trip to Norway! Beautiful vistas, a waterfall within hiking distance and warm, friendly service from the owners and staff that made us feel at home immediately. The evening dinner we had at the Hjelle Hotel was absolutely perfect! The walks we took here were so beautiful and everything was so peaceful! Cannot rate it high enough!

Simply amazing, the hotel itself, all the little artistic details, the rooms, the surrounding view on at least three glaciers, the walking and hiking options, the staff, the breakfast... We'll be back surely!

This was one of my husbands and I favorite places we stayed here in Norway. It felt like staying with family. By far the most beautiful location, we even took a cold swim. The dinner was excellent, so delicious. We stayed in the motel external building and it was so clean and such a cute vintage place. We loved it! Highly recommend!

Het hotel is gelegen vlak aan het water, met een fantastisch uitzicht. Het is de ideale plek om tot rust te komen na een drukke dag. Wij verbleven in het afzonderlijk gebouw in het motel. De kamer was basic maar zeer gezellig en comfortabel ingericht. Het personeel is ontzettend vriendelijk. Het diner was lekker. Wij kunnen dit charmant verblijf absoluut aanbevelen.
