Nguyen Shack Retreat - Phong Nha

Me gustó la zona, sí que es verdad que esta apartado del centro y nos pillaron dos días de lluvias que teníamos que coger grab para todo. La ubicación si hace buen tiempo puedes coger moto o bici es muy chula. El personal muy amable todas. Está lleno de perritos y gatitos muy monos, que si no te gustan es un punto en contra claro. El desayuno muy bueno, no estaba incluido pero tampoco era caro. La piscina tenía buena pinta pero no la pudimos probar. Nos dieron muchas facilidades a la hora de alquilar la moto o hacer alguna excursión, etc. También tienen una granja que puedes ver los animales.

Lo que no me gustó: No se si fue por la lluvia, porque no tienen sifones o porque no hay una ventana en el baño pero el lavabo lo teníamos que mantener cerrado al segundo porque olía muy mal. La habitación en sí estaba limpia, sí que es verdad que en la zona del exterior se acumulaba agua como en el balcón y había millones de mosquitos. El aire acondicionado se tenía que mantener encendido por la humedad (está en un sitio lleno de plantas parece que estés en una selva y al final estaba lloviendo también entonces es mi opinión). Para llegar a la habitación hay que dar un largo paseo que es agradable por las vistas, sí que es verdad que hay algunas plantas que tienes que apartar porque están en medio del paso pero está muy bien mantenido en general ya que es muy grande el sitio. Después no nos gustó nada que pedimos que nos lavaran la ropa el día anterior y nos la entregaron toda arrugada y había una camiseta que tenía sudor y seguía el sudor ahí… hemos lavado en muchos sitios y había sido en el peor, no digo que la planches pero por lo menos doblarla bien. En resumen, si hubiera sabido que llovía no lo hubiera escogido, si hace buen tiempo creo que es una opción chula y a 10 minutos en grab del centro de phong nha.

Everything exceeded my expectations. The staff were so helpful and friendly, I felt safe as a solo female traveller and fully taken care of. I loved waking up each morning to the mountain view and getting to cuddle with all the animals. Town was just a short bicycle ride away, but it was also fun just hanging out at the property meeting other travellers. A big shout out to Tina who was just awesome and so funny. I 100% recommend staying here. It was nice a quiet but also super close to town and other attractions.

Amy & Gina among the rest of the team were amazing hosts. This was probably the best hospitality we have had while traveling vietnam, Gina had a wicked sense of humor and other members of the team would all be willing to help and also good to have a laugh with. There is also a lot of animals (chocolate, taco, toto and many others) along wit 4 pug/corgi new borns (2.5 weeks old at the time of this post.) And the staff genuinely love these animals they live a very good life. The pool is absoloutely massive and we felt very spoiled having cocktails delivered to us beside the pool. Seriously the staff give this place its x factor well done.

- for the budget bungalow room the bathroom was very tight and there is small gaps in the floor and walls, we thought we would get bugs from this but absoloutely did not. I wouldnt consider either of these an issue just a note. - The food was not as good as the local restaurant's

The beds are very bad. The toilet are poorly maintained. Our room was around 10 mins of walk from the reception, which meant we had to walk a long way each time

Ein absolutes Erlebnis! Wir waren im Tierparadies und die Lage ist absolut idyllisch - mit dem Moped sind es ca 5min zur Haltestelle der offiziellen Busse. Das Essen ist ein Traum und das Personal so nett und hilfsbereit, haben uns wirklich wohlgefühlt!

Really good location, just 2km outside of Phong Nha bus station with free pickup to the homestay. Host was very informative on arrival and went above and beyond to show us all of the activities to do in Phong Nha. Food was great, very understanding of my girlfriend having a gluten allergy. Animals / dogs / puppies was an added bonus. Free bicycle rental.

Could have some desserts on the food menu :)

Die Bettwäsche im Apartment hat sich elektrostatisch aufgeladen und war deshalb nicht angenehm.

Firstly Tina the host is fantastic. She is funny, energetic, attentive, always happy and willing to help. Her staff were really lovely. The food was clean and yummy. We tried almost everything on the menu. This property made our trip in Phong Nha. There was an area with very friendly and affectionate farm animals. Goats, sheep, a young cow and buffalo, young pigs, and a couple mumma pigs with the new babies, ducks chickens and rabbits. Then amongst the main area there are dogs, fresh puppies, kittens and cats. It was a real treat. The dogs were so adorable they would tag along with us when we would go for walks into the paddock. They have scooters for rent and free bicycles to borrow. Our kids did not want to leave..

The rooms, while spacious are basic. But you while find that everywhere in Phong Nha is the same. I would suggest checking your windows/sliding doors after the cleaners have been. Close them to stop any mosquitoes. They tend to leave them open after they have been..

Supervriendelijk personeel! Tina en haar collega's waren fantastisch behulpzaam en vriendelijk. Mooie, rustige omgeving. Heel fijn zwembad.

Er waren pasgeboren puppy's die continu mochten gepakt worden door iedereen. Ze kregen volgens ons zo niet voldoende rust of de kans om te drinken bij de mama. Jullie mogen gerust wat strenger optreden in het omgaan met de dieren door de gasten.

Das Personal war sehr sehr nett und zuvorkommend. Unser Bus war zu früh da und wir hätten diesen fast verpasst, danke des Personals haben wir den Bus aber noch erreichen können Danke!!! Außerdem hat mir die Anlage sehr gut gefallen, es war sehr idyllisch und sehr viele Tiere(Hunde, Katzen, Schweine....) perfekt für Familien geeignet.

Ich fande es schade das das Frühstück nicht inklusive war. Das hätte man noch dazu Buchen müssen. In Deutschland Standard in Vietnam eher ungewöhnlich.

El hotel está situado a unos 8 minutos en coche del centro, perfecto para estar tranquilos en un entorno precioso y el Grab al centro solo vale 1,50€ aprox. Las instalaciones son geniales , rodeado de naturaleza con una piscina muy bonita. Tienen muchos animales sueltos, pero no hay suciedad ni moscas como he visto en otros comentarios. Los bungalows tienen mucha privacidad, están colocados de manera que aunque tengas balcón no ves a los demás huéspedes. También he leído que quedan lejos de la recepción del hotel , pero que son 2 minutos andando? Nada. Hay una gran explanada delante con búfalos de agua y vacas, que en temporada se lluvia se convierte en un gran lago. Los perros y gatos que corren sueltos son muy amigables. Desde el primer día fuimos muy bien atendidos por un servicio excelente! Destaco el trato con Tina, super simpática y atenta (y un poco loca jajaja LOVE u Tina!) y también Amy!! Nuestro bus salía a las 23h y nos permitieron dejar el equipaje y hacer uso de las instalaciones durante todo el día. Muy contentos con la elección de este alojamiento! Recomendaremos vuestro alojamiento a nuestros amigos de España! Un abrazo para todos!

Je hebt hier het gevoel dat je even helemaal weg bent van de drukte. De accommodatie heeft een gezellige en ontspannen sfeer en is een mooie uitvalsbasis om de omgeving te ontdekken. Vooral de rust en de natuurlijke omgeving maken dit verblijf speciaal. Een aanrader voor iedereen die houdt van natuur, rust en een verblijf op een mooie, authentieke locatie. We hebben er met veel plezier verbleven en komen graag nog eens terug.

A wonderful, laid back retreat in the beautiful Phong Nha area with many great activities (caves, trekking, duck farm) nearby. The staff is super friendly and charming, the atmosphere is absolutely great, our family apartment was wonderful and we loved the relaxed pool and restaurant area with a beautiful view on the fields, water buffalos, mountains. The food in the restaurant was great, we ate there every day during our 3 days stay. We loved the animals, there were also super cute baby dogs, and they were all as relaxed and friendly as the whole place.

Sehr freundliche Mitarbeiter: wir kamen mitten in der Nacht an, und es wurde uns umgehend ein Taxi organisiert, das uns aus der Stadt zur Unterkunft bringt. Wir hatten die große Familienunterkunft, Doppelbett unten, 3 Einzelbetten oben, also viel Platz. Tolle Aussicht auf Bäume und Felder. Auf den Bildern sieht es so aus, als würde die Unterkunft an einem See liegen. Bei uns war es wegen zu wenig Wasser nur ein Tümpel, der aus dem Fenster auch gar nicht zu sehen war. Aber trotzdem viel Grün als Aussicht. Toller Pool: langzogen wie in Schiff, Blick auf den Tümpel, sehr erholsam zum Runterkühlen. Leckeres Abendessen im Restaurant. Mitarbeiter helfen bei der Buchung von Touren und Transfers - vielen Dank!

In der letzten Nacht gab es starken Regen. Am Morgen stellten wir fest, dass es an einer Stelle durch das Dach geregnet und auf das Kopfkissen getropft hatte. Tatsächlich war ein Spalt zwischen Wand und Dach von mehreren Zentimetern. Das erklärt im Nachhinein auch die vielen Schnakenstiche, die wir morgens hatten. Das Frühstück ist a la carte, könnte aber mehr sein. Man darf 1x Kaffee, 1x Saft und 1x Hauptgericht wählen. Unser sportlicher Teenager wurde davon nicht ganz satt.

Such a lovely, relaxed vibe here! Animals wander around freely, which just adds to the charm. Staff are friendly and genuinely helpful with whatever you need. Great breakfast choice, and the view from the rooms is fantastic. We spent hours just relaxing on the terrace.

One thing to note: if you’re looking for spotless, polished luxury, this might not be the place for you — it has more of a rustic, laid-back charm instead.

The facilities are outdated. Room is like a hostel, bad toilet situation, can't heat the water when air-conditioning is on and many bugs in the room. The room is not clean so found stuff from previous guests in the bathroom.. also poll water where green and not very attractive to swim in we got rash afterwards

This was a cheap and cheerful destination, and more budget than our usual stay types. Very much aimed at the animal friendly type. It does provide good privacy and serenity overlooking the lagoon, and a farm experience. The staff helpful in giving advice on booking transfers and tours to caves. The Shack provided a large fleet of Bikes however they are all very basic .

Bungalows need a revamp. Floorboards lifting, bathroom pretty basic. This would not suit anyone with mobility issues, as rooms are spread out and the walkway narrow, sloped and sometime slippery/could get treacherous in the wet. Had one meal at the restaurant, the meal was OK but not as good as at other places.

Le personnel est génial le personnel est au top! Vraiment gentil, attentionné avec un sourire très naturel! La piscine avec sa vue incroyable, les chambre correcte avec cette vue aussi magnifique ce réveiller avec la colline embrumée car saison des pluies. C'était sublime. Les animaux sont le vrai gros plus de ce lieu nos enfants 13 mois et 5 et demi ont adoré !

We booked a family room for four adults and one child, and it was really comfortable, with a beautiful view of the mountains and rice fields. The whole place has such a lovely atmosphere, and you can really feel connected to nature. There’s also a local restaurant nearby that serves noodles for breakfast, and they were absolutely delicious! We rode bikes there, and it was only a short ride from the homestay. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would happily come back.

One thing that was a little disappointing was the river shown in the pictures on Booking.com. We expected to see a river when we arrived, but it turned out to be more like a seasonal lake that fills up during the rainy season. Unfortunately, it was very dry during our stay, so there wasn’t much water to see. Another concern was a gas leak from the kitchen during our stay. Luckily, the staff were able to fix the problem, although it took quite a while. Everyone seemed very frightened by the incident, and for safety, we were asked to move to the parking area. Even though the parking area was quite far from the kitchen, we could still smell the gas there. Thankfully, the issue was eventually resolved, but it was definitely an unsettling experience

This is a western / Vietnamese owned place about eight minutes motorbike ride away from the main tourist strip in a beautiful location surrounded by nature. I had two rooms, the first was very basic, but I had food poisoning so I upgraded to a much nicer room. The general facilities are great and the staff are lovely. The pigs are an added bonus!

I'm a hardened traveller but the A frame 'basic' rooms are incredibly basic, the bathroom was so small that I couldn't actually sit straight on the toilet! It would probably have been okay but I had food poisoning, so I upgraded to another room which was much better. The food in the restaurant was quite average, the Vietnamese stuff surprisingly bland, I ordered Poutine for lunch and it was a bit sloppy and tasteless - but I really can't complain about a Canadian dish in Vietnam and it not being great!

Nous avons adoré notre séjour dans cet hôtel. Les hébergements sont répartis dans de petites maisons, ce qui rend l’endroit très calme et agréable. Notre logement se composait d’une seule grande pièce avec un lit double et un lit superposé, ce qui était parfaitement adapté à notre famille. Même s’il faut marcher quelques minutes pour rejoindre la réception, la piscine ou le restaurant, cela en vaut largement la peine. Nous avions la dernière chambre au bout de l’allée, avec une vue absolument exceptionnelle, aussi bien de jour que de nuit. Si vous en avez la possibilité, nous vous conseillons de demander cette partie de l’hôtel. La piscine est immense et très agréable. Le personnel est remarquable : toujours souriant, attentionné et prêt à rendre service. C’est sans aucun doute l’équipe la plus chaleureuse que nous ayons rencontrée pendant notre voyage au Vietnam. L’hôtel propose de nombreux services : location de scooters et de vélos, organisation d’excursions, conseils pour les visites… Tout est fait pour faciliter le séjour. Les enfants ont également adoré les animaux en liberté dans l’établissement : chiens, chats, cochons, chèvres, vaches, oiseaux… Cela donne beaucoup de charme au lieu. Enfin, l’emplacement est pratique. Le centre de Phong Nha est accessible en 5 à 10 minutes en scooter, et les principaux sites touristiques se rejoignent facilement. Les Grab desservent également l’hôtel, même s’ils sont parfois un peu moins nombreux.

Le principal point à améliorer concerne le restaurant. Les prix nous ont semblé un peu élevés par rapport à la qualité des plats. Par exemple, le poisson que nous avons commandé contenait énormément d’arêtes, ce qui a rendu le repas peu agréable. Le petit-déjeuner, bien qu’inclus, est correct mais pourrait également être un peu plus varié ou qualitatif. Autre point : le nombre de transats autour de la piscine est insuffisant au regard de la capacité de l’hôtel. Certaines personnes réservent leur place dès le matin en laissant simplement leur serviette, ce qui complique l’accès aux transats pour les autres clients. Ces quelques points restent toutefois mineurs au regard de la qualité de l’accueil et du cadre exceptionnel de l’établissement.

Nice pool, beautiful, peaceful gardens. Was nice to play with all the animals. Aircon worked perfectly. Rooms were quite spacious.

Mattress and bedding were not good quality. The location is just a bit too far from the village to be able to walk to restaurants (but that's why it's so peaceful as well).

Due to the position of the AC it is difficult to sleep with on, but that might be an us problem.

The views from the common areas are lovely. The vibe is peaceful and the staff are warm and helpful. The rooms are very cute. I stayed in a room facing the garden. It was nicely designed and I slept well.

I went there partially for the yoga classes in the morning, but there was no yoga at the moment. Best to check beforehand whether they offer daily yoga. I had encounters with a lot of large ants that bite in my room. It is to be expected when living close to nature.

El personal es increíblemente amable, la comida muy bien. La ubicación, que en principio puede parecer que está alejado de todo, es precisamente lo que le da un valor añadido. Es un lugar perfecto para la zona.

Las cabañas, donde fue nuestra habitación, podrían estar mejor. Un tema importante es que tienen poca luz, no se ve dentro.

Swimming pool was big, but never the cleanest. Comfy bed in the room. Air con and fan made it manageable to stay in. Staff very helpful and kind, and helped us book sleeper bus to Hoi An. Animals around were cool (pigs, dogs, cats) but sometimes a bit too close to kitchen/food areas

We stayed in one of the shacks, which was quite small. Lighting was not great in the room as was partially covered by a tarpe over hanging the bed. Bugs everywhere! Even though we never opened the window and always had the door shut, there were ants and insects everywhere in the room, crawling through the creaks and cracks in the walls, ceiling, doorframes, etc. Restaurant was not great. Food quite bland and their coffee was basically just milk. Location of accommodation was quite far out from centre, which we knew about, so just ensure you can get grab, etc to town. Toilet seat was almost touching the wall, so if you’re tall, you’ve to squeeze through.

If you're looking to escape the city and enjoy nature and wildlife, this is the perfect place to stay in Phong Nha. Don't expect a 5* resort, that's not what this place is meant to be. Instead, you'll be surrounded by nature, with the occasional visit from geckos and the sounds of the jungle at night, all of which add to the experience. The staff are incredibly friendly, welcoming, and always happy to help with transport arrangements, tour bookings, or anything else you might need during your stay. Facilities and food are simple but good and sufficient for a comfortable stay.

Coffee was disappointing considering access to the best Vietnamese coffee beans. Rooms, while very clean, may be in need of some TLC.

The place is in the middle of rice fields, which is great as you're a bit outside from the main village. There are plenty of animals at the place, friendly and clean. The staff is friendly and cheerful (hi Tina!). A guest took by mistake our personal helmet, but the homestay replaced it before we leave. You get free water refills.

The WiFi was really weak during our stay (0 coverage at our room 201). Cleanliness could be improved - a lot of ants were flooding the room and no cleaning done during our stay (not even swiping the floor).

Bedroom layout wasn't ideal. 2 storey room with steel staircase made hard to climb without shoes. Only one side table by the bed in the small area upstairs. AC upstairs on top of the bed, making the area very cold, no matter what temperature was set-up and one fan downstairs that didn't do much. Sink in the bathroom was under a shelf making impossivel to use.

Wat een geweldige plek! Het uitzicht is fenomenaal, het personeel echt super vriendelijk en behulpzaam. Alle diertjes maken het extra bijzonder. Onze 4 persoonskamer had fantastisch uitzicht over de bergen. Het eten en drinken in het restaurant was ook al heerlijk. Al met al een heerlijke plek om te verblijven!

La gentillesse du personnel, toujours aux petits soins pour passer un bon moment. Nous avons adoré l’ambiance de cet hôtel : en pleine compagne, dans un calme parfait, entourés d’animaux. Parfait pour voyager avec un bébé, notre fils s’est régalé avec tous ces animaux. Le petit déjeuner et les repas étaient excellents. J’espère réussir à revenir un jour, merci pour tout.

La chambre était un peu rustique, mais quand on voit tout le reste, ça ne ose aucun problème.

Nguyen's Shack has about 20 small - middle sized apartments, all in a small village close(5m by scooter) to Phong Nha town. It's on the edge of the town and therefore next to the local rubbertree forests and jungle. Remote. There's a large and excellent swimming pool, communal dining area with a view over the nearby lake/reservoir. The apartment itself was charming with a really beautiful view and panoramic window with balcony attached. The owner's husband informed us this house was a free upgrade. I highly suggest not skimping on the balcony houses! It may need some maintenance, but everything worked. Finally I would like to make two important points: there are pets in large numbers, pug puppies, corgi, chihuahua, pomeranian, a cat. In a nearby pen there's cows, goats, ducks, wild and domestic pigs and chickens. Just adorable when the pets are around as you eat breakfast or dinner. Finally i'd like to make mention of the amazing staff. Nguyen herself, het husband and (really smart) children are lovely, great conversations and tips about the local area. The hired staff are genuinely lovely too! Friendly, helpful and enthousiastic. Made a nice stay much nicer! Best smoothies, good food and excellent breakfast too!

Amazing animals

This place is amazing. Staff are friendly. If you like animals (dogs, cats, pigs, chickens etc) you will love this place. Our kids didn't want to leave. Pool is long so you can do some lengths. Views from cabins were beautiful and all were very private. Food was all home made in an open kitchen. Situated out of Phong Nha itself which is definitely a bonus- we cycled into the town once (with 12 and 14 year old) but to be honest there isn't much going on there except for boat tours to Phong Nha caves.

We enjoyed 3 nights at this hotel and it was so laid back and lovely. We felt very looked after, enjoyed some very tasty food, used the bikes and scooters and ended each day with a dip in the pool. Really good value and a great atmosphere. Staff were really lovely and very helpful

We travelled as family and had a wonderful time from start to finish. We stayed for 5 nights it was the most beautiful location, gorgeous scenery, plenty to do and helpful, friendly staff. We loved spending time with all the animals especially the piglets and the puppies. We can’t wait to return.

We did have insects in our room but it is to be expected when living surrounded by nature and countryside.

Alles! Een van de beste verblijven in Vietnam! Mooie natuur, lief personeel, leuke huisjes, lekker eten en omringt door lieve diertjes. Een dikke 10!

Un super endroit en plein milieux de la nature avec pleins d'animaux très mignon ! La nourriture est delicieuse et le personnel adorable.

La clim juste en face du lit ce n'est pas agréable et les chaises du restaurant ne sont pas confortables du tout...
