Reviewed Aug 6, 2026The best thing about this property is that it’s overall not too far away from the main station in Kagoshima city. Another really good thing about it is that the price is very nice and overall the beds were rather comfortable, I’d recommend this for a good budget Hotel, if that’s what you’re into. I also really enjoy the staff member. She was very sweet and I just really enjoyed myself there.

Reviewed Jul 21, 2026とにかく金額が安く、繁華街にアクセスしやすい場所で使い勝手がよかったです。１階はカフェ？かわいいお店のようでしたが今回は日程的に時間がなくて利用できず。古い建物ですが清掃はきちんとされていて、和室の個室で落ち着く空間でゆったり過ごせました。お布団も気持ちよくぐっすり眠れました。今回は共有部分はほぼ使用せず眠るだけでしたが、連泊してゆっくりお部屋で過ごすこともできそうなのでまた鹿児島旅行の際には使用させていただきたいです。
専用駐車場、提携駐車場はありません。徒歩5分以内にコインパーキングはいくつかあります。4階ですがエレベーターは使用できないです。洗面所に置いてあるのはボディソープ、シャンプー、ドライヤーのみです。タオルやトリートメント、その他使用したいものはご自身で持参が必要です。お部屋は中からしかカギはかけられないので、荷物を置いて出かけるのは少し不安があります。ただこの金額なら全て不満には感じません！

Reviewed Jul 9, 2026아침 5시반에 일어나야해서 잠만 자려고 예약했는데 생각보다 내부가 관리가 잘돼있어서 좋았어요. 호스트도 친절하고요 방이 진짜 아늑하고 편안한 느낌이 들어서 비즈니스호텔보다도 마음 편하게 잤네요. 운이 좋게 도미토리에 저혼자뿐이라 아주 편하게 잤어요 일본 가정집 느낌이어서 한번이라도 자보는거 추천드려요.
화장실이 좀 관리가 안돼있던 것 같아요. 물이 잘안빠지고 샤워실 커튼에서 냄새가 약간 났어요. 화장실만 좀 더 청결하면 아주 완벽할 것 같아요!

Si trova al quarto piano di un palazzo senza ascensore. La camera privata è in stile tradizionale giapponese, c'è poi una zona comune e la cucina. L'host è molto disponibile. Consigliato!

Central location to a JR train station, shopping, and main city viewpoint. Accommodations has a lot of character as a converted building. Reviewed Apr 27, 2026Le charme du style japonais et le respect des occupants par rapport au silence. Comme il s'agit d'un hostel, Les gens étaient plus sociables que dans d'autres structures et l'hôte était également très accueillante. J'ai passé un très bon séjour.
L'hostel est vieux et assez fatigué, mais il reste bien fonctionnel. Considérer qu'il est au troisième étage d'un immeuble sans ascenseur, il faut donc monter les valises ou le sac.

Reviewed Apr 20, 2026Perfect location for visiting Kagoshima and Sakurashima island before taking the night ferry to Yakushima The host has been very nice to me, offering me the individual room for the same price as I could not get a below bed in the dormitory… so nice from her She also speaks a very good English and could help me a lot when I asked my questions! Furthermore the price is just perfect, of course you cannot expect a 4stars hotel for that price but everything was clean !

Reviewed Apr 11, 2026Tomal is a backpacker’s haven in Kagoshima. It’s comfortable, charming, and provides the necessary facilities for someone passing through. The staff was very friendly, and the whole place is filled with quirky features.
On the 4th floor and no elevator?!?! Ha ha — I know it’s not the property’s fault, but if I have to write something I didn’t like, it was all the steps to get to the hostel.

Reviewed Mar 23, 2026The staff was great! We didn't interact much, but it was pleasant. I like the spirit of Hostel Tomal. I like that they're creatively using and breathing life into an old building. There are similar cool projects in the surrounding area--old buildings with cafes, art galleries, book stores, etc.
This place is not quiet. It breaks my heart to write this--because the staff was great and I love the concept of this hostel--but I was very uncomfortable there. The most important part of an accommodation is sleep and I hardly slept at all. Being an old building, there isn't any soundproofing. Even with ear plugs, I was kept up by the chatter of guests in common spaces, the rumble and occasional roar of vehicles on the streets outside, and the rattle of the neighboring room's AC unit outside my window. Also, quite a bit of light streamed into my private room through the space between the sliding doors from the kitchen immediately outside (a kitchen light was left on all night, perhaps for safety because guests need to get up to walk to the toilet at night). And these weren't a big deal for me but I'll also mention that my private room door didn't have a lock and there was significant dust on the light fixtures in the bathroom. I'm glad that some people have a great stay at this hostel because it's a great concept and the staff is delightful, but I have to be honest about my experience. I booked this hostel because the reviews were so high and many reviews list the word "quiet." Being sensitive and a light sleeper, I thought the private room here would be perfect for me. But it wasn't. It was very unpleasant.

Ovviamente bisogna ricordarsi che si tratta di un ostello, però nonostante ciò, penso sia stata una delle esperienze più autentiche e genuine che ho mai avuto in un ostello. Mi sono sentito accolto, la struttura è viva, è piena di personalità e sinceramente avrei tanto voluto rimanere per più tempo. E se la struttura è così è solo grazie a Shoko, gentilissima e super disponibile! Spero tanto di poter tornare presto a Kagoshima e quando ciò accadrà sicuramente tornerò qui.

このお値段ですので、良くないと言うのも気が引けるのですが、強いて挙げるなら、お手洗いの便座が温められないタイプで、ヒヤッとしたことぐらいです。

Reviewed Jan 7, 2026Quirky, cosy hostel on the fourth floor of an unremarkable building. The hostel has a large common area, kitchen, one shower room, two sinks and two toilets. The hostel is clean but the building is old. It is in an excellent location, being just steps away from a bus and tram stop and an easy 10 minute walk to the Yakushima ferry terminal. It is also an easy walk to the main entertainment area of Kagoshima. And it's excellent value. It was very easy to chat with other guests here. Would stay again.
The building does have an elevator, but it doesn't work. Be prepared to carry your luggage to the fourth floor.
