The Grove

Joanna, the landlady of the hotel, was so warm and welcoming. We had a laugh with her and we felt you could tell her anything. She's the type that would do anything to make your stay even better. The breakfast was superb, tea was Yorkshire so guaranteed to be great! My husband had the coffee and he said it was good and strong.

The room was quite small, but it was adequate for us as we were only staying for 1 night. It still had a king-size bed though!

The hosts, Danny and Joanna, are lovely hosts and The Grove is a reflection of their dedication and hard work. Super clean rooms, highly maintained through out and a delicious breakfast are some of the highlights of this wonderful place.

Nothing negative to note about our stay, even the British weather was kind to us.

The location is excellent. The cleanliness of the room, en-suite, bedding, facilities etc were all excellent. The parking was very good but did have steep steps down to the rear entrance.

The room, the breakfast and the staff. The double room (#7) at the rear was very small. It had two bedside cabinets, a wide window ledge and small corner shelf for the kettle. There was no space for a chair nor desk or table. There wasn't even sufficient room for the door to the en-suite to be easily opened when approaching from the far side of the bed. Breakfast was served in 2 sittings 08:30 and 09:00 and was pre-ordered by a tick box form the day before. Everything is served - no helping yourself to a larger portion of anything. If a full English breakfast is your style then it is probably good. If not, the options are not so good. The first day I ordered a full English without the meat. The tomato was burnt black. The mushrooms, small amount of beans and two small eggs were OK. The tinned grapefruit was poor. The service was also slow, 45 minutes for breakfast. The staff (I assume the proprietors). My wife is sensitive to bad fumes from cooking oil. We were allocated a table adjacent to the kitchen door. After a couple of minutes, my wife told me she cannot stay there and would have to leave. She asked the lady in charge if we could please be moved to another table. The lady became visibly angry but reluctantly moved us. In the afternoon we returned to the hotel. As my wife was about to open the front door, it was opened by the (assumed) proprietor. Upon seeing her, he said words to the effect "you do not need the door opening as you have a key" and let the door close in her face. He did re-open the door but with no apology. (Reminiscent to me of a plausible scene in a popular hotel sitcom may years ago.) My wife is a school teacher and would normally reprimand such behaviour but she kept her counsel.

The breakfast food was amazing. Outstanding eggs tomato bacon sausage mushrooms black pudding beans with toast and tea/coffee, plus greek yoghurt with fruit and muesli! Sets you up for the day.

Pillows were uncomfortable but to be fair, I have yet to find a venue where the pillows are fantastic!

I would prefer to have the possibility of brewed coffee early morning instead of instant.

Room was excellent. Large and in perfect location. Fully equipped kitchen area; huge main bed and space in living room for more sleeping (didnt require it). Comfy settee and chair as well. Across road from park and a steady 5 min walk into town.

Joanne was the perfect host, friendly and attentive from the minute we arrived to the minute we left. Rooms were really clean and comfortable. Fresh milk and cold bottles of water were supplied in a small fridge near the bedrooms, which was lovely. Breakfast was really nice, all cooked fresh and everything good quality and tasty. Would highly recommend and would definitely return.

We thought the place was beautifully furnished lovely small quirky ornaments here and there , absolutely spotlessly clean throughout, the host made us feel like we had known them forever, great position for the town centre , breakfast set us up for the day, i would all heartedly recommend this place 10 out of 10 for everything you need for a quiet comfortable holiday.

En suite bathroom slightly cramped, but not a major issue. Car parking a little tight, but it is a very central location. Access front or back required many steps, so wouldn't be suitable for anyone with mobility issues. Fine for us.

Everything about The Grove is first class.Nice comfy bed.A Lovely breakfast & it's proximity to the town centre.There are a few steps at the rear & front of the property.So,may not be very good for non able bodied people.Just cannot fault the Grove at all.

The room and bathroom were exceptionally clean, the bed was comfy and the room was a good size. We enjoyed the breakfast, especially the berries and yogurt, and the cooked part of the breakfast was nice. The guest house is in a great location, a short walk to the front and shops and restaurants etc

There are quite a lot of stairs and there are steps outside, although I do not think anything can be done about this

Location, easy access to Whitby, Lovely breakfast cooked to order not pre heated, Rooms immaculately clean also Danny and Joanna went out of there way to make sure we were comfortable even putting extra fan in the room due to hot weather we were experiencing and cold water and fresh milk for the tea/coffee in a fridge outside the door. Parking was good and I was happy my motorbike would be safe in the location.

Location, gave ease of access to Whitby habour, staff very friendly, room compact but comfortable.

Room was in what would have been the loft so one one wall was sloping and I knocked my head several times. Traffic noise was bad and dawn chorus very loud. Heat of room was such as had to leave window open. There were many steps down from car park level which meant many to return to the car.

Friendly owners , made you welcome. Rooms immaculate. Breakfast was outstanding all fresh quality ingredients, cooked to perfection.

Its not a complaint, but the milk I got from the fridge on the morning of our departure had gone off. It's good you get fresh milk, so this can happen.

Not sure if it can be changed but the closed curtains left a big gap at the end and the sunrise was like a spotlight on the bed. I personally would have preferred to serve myself with cereal,juice, fruit.

I would have no hesitation recommending The Grove! I’d also be delighted to return and stay again next time we are in Whitby!! We went for an occasion, but I’d love to go back and see more of Whitby. We had a really warm welcome from Danny and he helped us in with our bags. The room was well appointed and spotlessly clean. Loved the seating area outside the room (as we went with friends and met there before our breakfast). Lovey facilities - hospitality tray well stocked with fresh milk in the fridge on the landing of each floor. Nice breakfast too! Delightfully friendly hosts. Good location short walk to get to the bars and restaurants and seafront. Yes there are steps and yes it’s hilly but that’s the nature of places like Whitby! This is a really love place to stay and I hope to go back again.

from booking in to leaving on the last of our stay, the warmth of the staff was excellent, the guesthouse was very very clean the breakfasts each morning was enjoyable and well presented and nothing appeared to be a problem with the staff all rooms used were beautifully decorated and well presented the guesthouse as advertised was just a short stroll to the shops,bus / railway station we are looking forward to revisiting whitby again soon and have no hesitation to using the grove

other than there being no charge for staying we belive that nothing that can be done to improve the guesthouse

Always stay at The Grove when visiting Whitby. It an excellent guest house. Always a warm welcome. The Location is perfect, so close to the town centre and definitely within walking distance!! And parking onsite is a massive bonus in Whitby. Rooms are lovely and very comfortable, plenty of towels and tea/coffee etc. Fresh milk too!! Always helpful with local information. The Breakfast and Service is Very good too. We left very full. I would recommend The Grove to anyone!!
