Comfortable beds, very quiet and peaceful good location and good sized car park
It was a little bit tired but would go back again
Leuke mooie locatie
Schoonmaak mocht wat beter en alles is verouderd, behoorlijk gehorig.
Location
Hot water supply
Location was superb next to the River Exe. Restaurant is good.
The breakfast. Veggie sausage was so tough I couldn’t cut it. One mushroom that was tough, too. After breakfast I enquired where was the yogurt and told it was in the fridge but where was the fridge? It was self service so you had to do your own toast and tea. The annex, where my friend had a bedroom, had outside window frames that were rotten. My floorboards creaked. Bathroom window was permanently open (couodnt close it if I’d wanted to) and the shower was hard to switch off. No walk-in shower.
Fantastic location and public areas/pub is lovely. It is really relaxing. Lots of choice of food, snacks and drinks. The triple cooked chips are amazing. Whitebait lunch snack was also really good. Watch the wine offer, as the 2 glasses/get third free didn’t actually work for us! Rooms are clean but basic.
For the price point would expect more in the room. Good coffee and tea, but not much of each. However, no water provided, which I didn’t realise until I had gone to bed and needed to take medication! My room was lovely, but the bed is on a plinth with steps, so I slept with the light on as I was frightened of falling down the steps lol! We were basically chucked out if the bar at 10.30 with no last orders (so couldn’t even get water for the room). Hydration stations are available in pub, but I didn’t feel I could come back down to bar to get water as staff were very keen to get rid of us to our rooms!! We ate as a group of 10, with 7 very happy eaters. 2 of us were unhappy with the cooking of our dish, but we’re given a discount with no fuss at all, and was unexpected! 1 of the party had a very poor meal, but was refunded in full, with no fuss, she would have happily paid something, but staff insisted on full 100% discount which was very generous.
The river as always is lovely
The room needs alot of tender loving care looks un loved now by owners. Sad to see as this was my favourite place.
The location
Room stank of damp. Uncomfortable bed. Drink facilities in room were dirty and sticky. Bathroom really needs some attention. Staff were rude and unwelcoming. Breakfast was dreadful. Badly cooked. No decent coffees available. Really poor selection.
Beautiful location. Lovely river.
Leaking shower screen. Looks a little tired.
Very comfortable bed, lovely sound of the river flowing outside Excellent meal in the evening especially as I was slightly past the last orders time good breakfast
I left my nightshirt in my room and it's not been found (boo) Steps in bedroom slightly potentially dangerous.
Clean
Sparse
All the staff where excellent Location was lovely
Exterior of the building was a bit tired could do with some attention
Venue,restaurant and bar very nice
Rooms were filthy. We booked two rooms and the one wasn't as bad but I wouldn't recommend a stay there if you like a clean room.
Big room. Hard working staff. Brilliant location.
Some quite evident maintenance issues. Lots of water damage in our bathroom due to a poorly installed shower screen. Decor needs a redo. Windows needed a clean, and one didn't fully shut. This place used to be very desirable. Somewhere you went out for a 'special meal'. Could very easily be improved with some maintenance and maybe some more staff on. That said prices are not too bad.
Beautiful setting.
It wasn’t clean in the bathroom. A house keeping person walked in on me before check out time. Staff seemed under pressure and it was easy to pick this vibe up. By the way they were talking & their body language. They didn’t seem happy in their role!
shower bed was comforatble
cleanliness everywhere very tired - needs a facelift everywhere dirty carpets cobwebs dirty walls noisy no option for food - stopped serving early
Location amazing. Partly thatched ancient Inn
Room paint peeling off bath panel needs redecoration in bathroom room 18
Location
Needs an update bathroom needed a good clean
The location was absolutely beautiful and was what drew us to booking
It is very tired and needs a lot of maintenance especially outside. Cobwebs everywhere and needs a good clean. Even though our room had a lovely view of the river i wouldn’t recommend as had to duck all the time with sloping ceilings. Staff were lovely and breakfast delicious
Staff were friendly ,helpful and hard working.
The bedroom was in need of refurbishing. Ill fitting shower screen. TV not working. Service poor in the dining room ,table booked for 19.00, food finally served at 20.40 !!
Location, food and staff
Room 12 was a little bit 'dusty' especially in the toilet
Great location by the River Exe
Good food and friendly
Location
Dirt. The food and the staff were more interested in closing the kitchen
Great location and good food.
Location was just right for a wedding near by
This has to be the shabbiest and grubby hotel in which I have ever stayed. Windows dirty and fixed so not possible to get any effective ventilation. Room very hot. Food very average, staff not very enthusiastic.
Location next to the river was amazing. Staff were friendly
Room was a little compact in places but not really a problem, added to the charm really
Could be a great place . . location and building . . but needs a referb
Poor Cleanliness . . . safety of patio & garden area outside our room . .beds were uncomfortable . . . the fan in the room hadn't been cleaned for years . . couldn't use it
Very good breakfast and lovely location
We had dinner in the restaurant. My husband ordered a sirloin steak and had to send it back as it was very tough and inedible. They took money off the bill to compensate.
I stayed here 2019 when doing lejog and thought it was a brilliant hotel so when we were looking for somewhere to stay a night in our return journey home from France we thought of here , but very disappointed, poor room dirty and breakfast rubbish
Beautiful Riverside location Well maintained older property comfortable bed Plenty of parking hard standing safe for Motorbike
Disappointed no Riverside walking footpath Catering pub standard
Lo ation next to river
Service poor, food average and room suze and cleanlines substandard
Beautiful location next to river
Bedroom was a little dirty especially behind stuff.
Food took to long to arrive nearly an hour and was not good quality in portion size not enough peas to go with a large fish and fries were not as advertised on menu
Beautiful location, friendly staff
Not enough headroom in the bathroom but we accept that this is part of the design of the room
Fisherman's Cot is a quaint building in a beautiful location right beside the River Exe. The hotel make the best use of these features so that it is a very calming and relaxing place to stay. The rooms are very comfortable and the food is good. This time I had the set dinner, which gives a choice for three varied courses and all three were delicious. Although the restaurant was very busy, the service was very good. I will definitely be staying here again!
Toilet rolls behind you are a little inconvenient is the only complaint I have.
Great location
Needs some maintenance
The lovely river setting
⭐☆☆☆☆ Disappointing Stay – Sadly Not the Standard We Expected Our recent stay at the Fisherman's Cot was extremely disappointing and unfortunately fell well below our expectations. On arrival, we were told that only a continental breakfast was included and that we would have to pay extra for a cooked breakfast, despite having booked and paid for breakfast for both mornings. This information turned out to be incorrect, but we didn't discover that until our final morning. The room itself was also a let-down. It had clearly not been cleaned properly, with dead flies on the windowsill, cobwebs in the bathroom and behind the television, and the overall condition of both the room and the building looking tired and poorly maintained. I reported the cleanliness issues and was assured the room would be cleaned again while we were out. On returning later that evening, only the dead flies had been removed; the cobwebs and other issues remained. Breakfast on the first morning was particularly disappointing. The continental selection was very limited, consisting mainly of toast, croissants, pain au chocolat and basic cereals. The fruit available looked well past its best, and there were no yoghurts or much variety. The biggest disappointment came on our second evening in the bar. While waiting to be served, I witnessed another customer being told there would be a 45-minute wait for food. She briefly asked her husband whether they wanted to wait and returned within seconds to politely decline. The young barman reacted by saying, "F*** my life," loud enough for everyone nearby to hear, including my six-year-old granddaughter. I found this completely unprofessional and unacceptable. When I challenged his behaviour, the manager, who was standing beside him, said nothing. When I was eventually served, there was no greeting, no courtesy, and no professionalism. The only real positive from our stay was Lil, who served us on our final morning.
The view
Slightly dilapidated
The whole place needs a complete overhaul - it is extremely shabby. I just couldn't believe it
The location was lovely by the river. Not too noisy either
The place is very tired. The room was not the cleanest and the fittings all in need of replacement.
Loved location Loved rooms outside and not upstairs Lovely food and drinks Peaceful and quiet
Rooms a bit basic for price
Beautiful setting and room to enjoy the weather and an overnight stay before our onward travel
The service was quite slow in the evening and limited at breakfast albeit friendly
Beautiful site looking over the river, we had dinner and breakfast and both were delicious. The room was easy to access and comfortable. Staff were friendly and helpful.
Not enough staff, to support bar and restaurant so you did have to wait alot and public toilets were not pleasant.
Nothing
Very tired, felt like it had not been maintained in years
Relaxed
Pictures make the waterfront look larger than it is . Outside seating could do with cushions
Loved location and patio doors ooened up to a lovely little garden, nice big comfy bed, Beautiful bathroom
The food in the pub wasnt to our taste
The staff, especially the young lady who checked us in and seemed to be doing everything, were friendly and helpful. It is in a stunning location on the banks of the Exe, with plenty of parking. The breakfast was enjoyable
The accommodation is pretty tired and run down. We had to report a wasp nest over the patio door, and there was a rodent scratching in the wall at around 4:30am. There was no TV remote, although the team tried hard to resolve this. The room was booked for 2, but only one towel was left in the room.
Location
Waited at the bar to long and steak was very fatty
Staff very helpful Beautiful location
Everything
This hotel was absolutely fantastic. It is set in a peaceful location by the river with beautiful views, and having such an amazing pub right downstairs was a huge bonus. I honestly don’t think you could find a better place in the area in terms of location, facilities, and the delicious breakfast. The owner was always welcoming, attentive, and happy to help with anything I needed. The room was very comfortable and had everything I could ask for during my stay. I stayed here for two nights, but I truly wish I could have stayed longer. I would definitely love to come back one day.

Friendly staff, lovely location and atmosphere, excellent food .
Room was clean but did have some maintenance issues, particularly the bathroom in which had lots of water damage and some mould issues.
The location and garden area was just beautiful with plenty of outdoor seating with a very relaxed, calm and peaceful atmosphere.
The website pictures only show the hotel rooms and not the outter rooms attached to the hotel. The room we were in the bathroom was pretty grim, the bedroom was ok, the bed was 2 single mattresses put together and very hard. Patio sliding doors leading to a small patio which was unkempt. The service in the restaurant was slow and the staff came across they didn't really want to be there but the food was lovely just small portions.
The river and staff
I have a list of things wrong. Wasn't informed of the building site outside of my window. would have cancelled for sure. After an awful night in a stuffy room. Having to wake my mum to kick toilet door open ,as I was trapped in there.workmen started around 8. Nobody was happy with their stay. All were complaining about food and service. Glad i only ate breakfast. Which was very overpriced. Avoid
Breakfast was the best part. Our room was very disappointing unclean and old linen left after changing and the room smelt damp and dirty.Dinner with friends was below standard experienced a year ago and due to staffing issues was an hour later than ordered and on arrival all dishes were over cooked…not good at all.Our room was so poor we requested to move and the only alternative was a disabled room which again was better but below the standards expected.
See above for overall review of our stay, sadly this will not be in our holiday route stop next year.Marston clearly have not invested in this business over the past 12 months and as a result the property is showing its age and has a very ‘well used’feeling an£ appearance.
Dusche praktisch unbrauchbar.
Nothing really
The property was very run down and in an urgent need of serious renovations. My husband couldn’t get in shower due to low ceiling. The fan provided as it was v hot was next to useless. There were cobs webs around the windows and ford escape door.
The location is beautiful and the staff welcoming.
Bell'atmosfera nel post cena
Pulizia, migliorabile
The scenery outside was gorgeous as it was located right next to the river. The bed was very comfortable and the staff were lovely.
The bathroom had water damage on the bath and the room had painted peeling of the wall. We had dinner at the location and the food took a very long time and was quite disappointing. The wait staff were absolutely lovely though.
The river There was nothing good about the building
Flooded toilets poor communication dreadful food lack of variety at the bar Not a penny has been spent on upgrading facilities or looking after an old building
Friendly and very helpful staff. Breakfast quality variable.
Although we were allocated a “quirky” room, the bathroom was inadequate. I am only 5’ 7” tall and I kept banging my head on the sloping ceiling over the shower! The bedroom would benefit from a deep clean.
Great and clean
All good
The location by the river is magical (on a sunny day). Lovely beet garden and ample car parking space
The staircase leading to our room clearly hadn't been cleaned although the room was clean. Breakfast was average and the dining room, used for both dinner and breakfast was gloomy (although one half of the room seemed to have been recently redecorated, no one was using that space.
Just location
Everything about the value was terrible, over priced. Filthy room
It was scruffy, dirty and some of the staff were unhelpful, others very nice
dirty carpet, sticky tables, poor breakfast, unhelpful staff, bathroom was awful, door didn't shut let alone lock, shower was difficult to use leaked and poorly decorated.
The river was nice and it looked very nice
On arrival i was delt with well, after checking in I went to the bar and it was not such a nice greet but rather awkward and not very nice. Throw room was absolutely sweltering couldn't breathe and did not sleep for more than an hour at a time, I even soaked a towel to lay on me , turns out they had heating on in bathroom and as it was an attic room well !!! Felt like i was in the Philippines with 40° !
Breakfast was tasty
Watch out for the steps is some areas. Not a problem but I had to hold my elderly mum’s hand.
Beautiful location lovely hotel the staff were really friendly would thoroughly recommend to anyone
Nothing
Beautiful position
Accommodation needs a refurb
Our room overlooking the river
Had to ask twice for our room to be cleaned in
Wonderful location next to river, very quiet and great spot for getting to other places. Very helpful staff we were late due to motorway closure and she stayed longer to wait for our arrival.
Friendly staff
Disappointed in the food
Location
Bathroom
food and drink were good room clean and comfy nice setting next to the river
despite advertising the worldcup on their website there was a major reluctance to show the football it was shown on mute and turned off immediately after the fulltime whistle tables were sticky shower wasnt the best manager seemed quite miserable
Fabulous location, good food and great staff
Some areas look a little tired. Our room (14) smelt musty
It was good condition and a great location
My wife cut her foot on soon glass that had not been cleaned up in the bedroom
The bed was very comfortable. The location was excellent. Parking was good.
The room was in need of a complete redecoration. Paint peeling off the ceiling and walls. Window frames falling to pieces and extremely dirty. The floors were very dirty, especially the bathroom. The staircase and corridor to the room were in need of a good clean. We will not be staying there again.
Location very nice .
Hotel was a bit tatty . In need of decor throughout.
Die Lage und das gute Essen
Gibt nix
Le calme et amabilité du personnel.
RAS
We are regi;ar visitors to the Cot and it is our favourite hotel in the UK. Location is superb and they have everything we need.
Great location, lovely staff, comfortable bed
Cold room and no hot water !
…
I don’t usually leave bad comments or feedback, but I feel I need to in this case. Unfortunately, the place was very unhygienic. Our room was really filthy and it seemed as though it hadn’t been hoovered for weeks. I’ve been using Booking.com for the last 14 years, and this is the first time I’ve encountered a place in such poor condition. The room also had a strong, unpleasant smell. When we were leaving, the lady at the hall way ignored us until we walked past and I said good morning. At the top of the stairs there was a bundle of washing left out, which was a hazard for guests trying to pass. Overall, the property feels very worn out and in need of renovation.
Food was good. Staff were friendly and helpful
Broken radiator in my room made it so hot i felt quite ill. Repaired on day 2. Shower was in bath and difficult for me to get in safely as an older person.
The team were very friendly and helpful. Great location by the river.
Beer was ok
Place needs a thorough makeover. Chipped paint, knackered carpets bath that i couldn't get in ( cos of roof angle ), shower i couldn't stand up in ( beam over it.- I'm 6ft ). And then there's a roof beam, running diagonally across the centre of the room
In spite of the annoying barrage of automated emails, this turned out to be a lovely stay in a traditional pub in an outstanding location by the river. Staff were friendly (once you could find them and get their attention) and there was a good choice of food and drink downstairs.
From the time of booking I received a large number of repetitive automated emails - at least one per day - asking for useless things like "online check in". I tried this but abandoned it when I found I was being asked to share my personal and financial details with some Dutch management company. The whole thing is completely unnecessary (check in at the pub was as normal) and seems to be a blatant data grab for marketing purposes, which I hate.
Fantastic setting, breakfast was good
What a lovely surprise! A beautiful spot by the river & the very pretty Bickleigh bridge. Large comfy bed, big shower, great view Breakfast was good. Very helpful, friendly staff
Nothing
food , localization
Hotel and restaurant needs refreshing
The location and room 5!!!
A little tired in places but clean
Coziness
Nothing
An incredibly wonderful location! Nearby is a river and small rapids. There's a beautiful clearing with tables and a view of the river.
The bathroom is not comfortable. The sink has separate hot and cold water taps, no mixer tap. Neither the shower nor the bathtub has a handheld shower head.
Excellent breakfast, comfy bed, spacious room
Shower screen didn't close properly, no comfy chair to sit in in the evening , no fridge in the hot weather, no lock on the bathroom door
Everything
We stayed in room 5. Bathroom was grubby, needed a good clean and a decent shower. No where but the floor to put anything down, no where to sit but the bed. We are in our 70s the room was plenty big enough to accommodate 2 chairs and a small round table which would have been much better. We were unable to open any windows, it was during a heatwave. Breakfast was disappointing, continental breakfast was a croissant, do it yourself drinks, toast etc. No clean cups available, we had to find someone to ask, no decaf coffee and had to wait another 15 minutes before anyone took our order. Service charge was automatically added to my breakfast costs, I would never have paid this if I had noticed.
Great location. Rooms are basic but ok for the price.
Paying for breakfast. Make sure you pre book because if you don't it's more than double the price
It’s in a lovely location, away from the town, with adjacent parking and on site restaurant facilities (during pub opening hours). The room was absolutely spotless, with all the amenities people now want. We had to settle for a bar meal on arrival which wasn’t bad, but breakfast the next morning was delicious, and Sally who was running the breakfast room was both friendly and helpful, managing it all with the ease of Marge Simpson corralling the family.
There were quite a few stairs for my old knees, and some of the interior looked a bit tired, but nothing really to spoil the stay.
I booked for my partners 70th birthday. Everything from the room to the food was exceptional...thank you!
The only criticism about the whole stay, was the Buddlehiea shub outside on the patio. The plant is so infested with blackfly, everything, including us, was rapidly covered in a sticky substance!!! The plant,in my opinion, needs pruning to the ground.
Very quaint & stunning location.
We were woken up after 7 both morning by a team of builders working on the property on a bank holiday weekend. We had to have the windows open because the weather was hot & they spoiled our relaxation
