Absolutely perfect stay. Exceptional food and beverage options. Excellent spa experience. Easy walk to the beach, town and harbor. I would not hesitate to stay again.
Great sea views and walks either on beach or into town. Fantastic food: we ate in the restaurant and bar and had great meals on both occasions. Service and staff wonderful. Very dog friendly. Good parking across the road. Excellent to have swimming pool and spa on site. Relaxing weekend to spoil ourselves.
Our room was on the top floor with no aircon or ability to open a window. It became a bit stuffy and interrupted a good nights sleep. Decor a bit eclectic and fussy for us in the room.
Everything lovely
Out tap top fittings fell off during our stay
Great location
A bit shabby for the price
Staff was very friendly, great location
Hot water was not always very hot in the bathroom
This is a magnificent, historic hotel offering fantastic views of the North Berwick Golf Club, the blue sea, and Bass Rock. Everything was delightful—from the friendly staff and charming, classic rooms to the delicious breakfast. I especially loved taking walks along the seaside, passing right by the golf course. Located close to Edinburgh, it is a place I highly recommend for a relaxing getaway.
As travelers from Korea, we lacked sufficient information. When we arrived in North Berwick from Edinburgh, we had no way to get to our hotel, so we had to walk while dragging our luggage. It would have been great if there had been a transport service from the station to the hotel.
Room excellent. Light switches and electric sockets are where you want them to be. Breakfast is very good. Spacious lounge areas.
The orange juice at breakfast is cheap stuff and a real let-down. And there was one member of staff who didn't meet the high standards of the rest - the night receptionist to whom I reported the breakdown of the (only) lift. He didn't apologise and didn't really care.
Fantastic location with beautiful views
Nothing. It was wonderful
Wonderful room. Comfy beds and bedding. Great spa facilities with long opening times and free access
Main areas a bit underlit
A grand old building offering a yesteryear charm
The water pressure in our room has n the top floor was very poor
The location
It’s a bit old and the bathroom is outdated. The smell in the room of old carpets . The cleaners spray some terribly strong toilet freshener on the carpet to delete the smell but it was even more awful.
Great location with beautiful views
cooked breakfast wasn't hot enough. scrambled eggs too runny
The personnel who assisted me throughout my stay are truly professional. They greeted me with warmth and that spirit carried forward in every element of my stay.
I would be surprised if anyone had a negative thought about this property or the staff.
The hotel is classic and beautifully situated. Nice restaurant and pub with great views too. Friendly helpful staff.
It’s old so so modern HVAC, but very well kept!
Bra frokost. Deilig seng. Herlig spa
Litt tett luft. Ikke styre temperaturen selv
Beautiful location
Tired bathroom. Worn furnishings.
Lage
Staff, location very good
Room wasn't cleaned No air con Understaffed, waiting long periods for drinks service
staff, food
Fantastic Hotel next to the golf course with sea view - super friendly staff and great breakfast and spa - highly recommend not only to golfers
From first contact our break could not have been better. Our request for a ground floor twin room was met with an upgrade. The staff were lovely, The food was fine and always served hot. The pool/ leisure centre was excellent, and the location is wonderful. We shall return.
Lovely hotel, staff excellent and accommodating. Good position at the Golf course but is a 15/20 minute walk to the harbour and High Street.
We had a room with a shower over the bath rather than a walk in shower but would request this the next time we go. Also didn’t have a stand to put travel bags but could have requested this but we improvised
Great location to stroll into the town. Didn't eat dinner in the hotel, but breakfast was decent.
Drinks were on the expensive side.
Location
Suite bad value, cracked and taped up windows. No spiced rum or brandy in stock at all.
It was great

We met friends for drinks at The Marine this week. It is a lovely hotel, however we wanted to give a special shoutout to Freya at Reception. My wife has mobility issues, and we wanted to get back into the town centre - Freya and her colleague on Reception tried the two taxi firms in North Berwick, and even the hotels private car & driver, unfortunately all were unavailable…Freya said “I’ve got my car just outside, I’ll give you a lift”! Absolutely exceptional, what a kind gesture, over and above her duties. A credit to the hotel, and a lovely young lady to chat to. Thank you Freya & The Marine!
Facilities services and accommodation
It was perfect
Great looking property
The mini bar fridge in our room vibrated most of the night keeping us awake
Proximity to beach and golf
Dated decor,
Excellent food and facilities. Staff were very friendly, great location with views over the golf course to the sea. Comfortable lounge areas. Good value.
The hotel is getting a little tired, particularly the spa area. The staff were very friendly and helpful but the service at times was very slow. It took 45 mins and 3 different staff to get a g&t served in the lounge. Perhaps just too few staff on that evening,
Beautiful location, lovely staff, excellent food and drink.
No air con in rooms - room very hot at night. Decor a bit tired in certain areas of the hotel.
Very helpful staff.
Had incident with room cleaning. A very large wedding hat box disappeared from our room. Advised reception of problem but no one seemed to take responsibility. Left disappointed without the hat box.
The access to the sea and the view are beautiful.
The hotel is old and the rooms aren’t up to date.
Have stayed many times over the years & cannot be faulted for cleanliness ( room & other areas of the hotel)/location/parking. Attentive staff especially breakfast.
Have noticed over the years the quality of some of reception/bar staff have declined. Some reception staff certainly need to become more friendly/professional & why have 4 on when hotel is in its quieter period all chatting & on phones ? The concierge has always been very professional & friendly 👏 been there many years A couple of bar staff could do with their outfits to be smarter & stop ' over chatting' which caused food NOT to be ordered & having to wait 2+hours. Appreciate building is old & has certain restrictions but wheelchair access is certainly not very good - having to be wheeled through the Spa area before arriving @ reception.
The massage therapist very pleasant and good
The hot tub rather dirty and broken tiles on the floor
Everything. Staff always so friendly
Nothing
Have had a soft spot for The Marine Hotel since visiting as a child…imposing building, the location, wonderful views and, until today, reliably good. You could recommend it to friends and their friends and know their experience would showcase Scottish hotels at their best. Oh dear, how disappointing today’s experience was. Admittedly, we only dropped in for lunch but how glad I am we weren’t staying! We arrived at 11.55 am and had a tight time schedule. We walked through reception quickly as there was no one there to stop(greet?) us, into the bar. There, a member of staff was mopping the floor and a waitress was dealing with trays of dirty cups and saucers. After sitting at a table for a few minutes, I went up to the bar to ask if it was table service or bar service. Bar service she answered. I asked what was available to eat… crisps, carrot cake, we don’t do lunch until 12.30 she replied when I asked about sandwiches. Fair enough. We sat at a table and had lukewarm coffees. Two other family groups came in and asked about food…they looked like residents…both groups left when told there was no food available, presumably to go elsewhere. I could write more but it’s not just the front of house staff who are responsible for declining standards. So disappointing to experience the lacklustre Scottish hotel experience I thought we said goodbye to years ago.
Vue sur la mer, amabilité du personnel, prêt des sets de golf, équipements.
Un peu cher. Pas d'accès à la salle gym pour les enfants
My wife and I I stayed here for two nights and it exceeded our expectations. Staff were excellent. Our suite overlooking the golf course was huge and the view was amazing. Ok so it was a bit tired in places but when everything else is so good it’s much easier to overlook any small issues.
Came for a spa day, was lovely. Afternoon tea was okay. Staff couldn’t be more disinterested in serving you, we asked for a food main menu too- no one came back and asked if we wanted anything. We had to chase them down to order more drinks, no food checks either. We sat for ages with a dirty table and no drinks. They were chatting the whole time amongst themselves. The young brunette that finally did serve us could clearly not be bothered. Really disappointed as we have been before and loved it.
The sea
Decor was too dark
Leisure facilities and service was excellent
Room would have benefited by improved ensuit especially walk in shower rather than shower over bath expected bigger room for tarif
Une vue fabuleuse, un séjour très confortable
The location was perfect; an amazing sea views and quiet rooms. The food from The Lawn restaurant was spectacular and definitely something I will have to have again.
Great location, outstanding view and beach access
Pool facilities and bathrooms could do with a bit of a refurb, and breakfast could be improved.
Amazing location! Loved the beach, the golf courses, the never ending views over the Bass Rock Spa was amazing, the room and restaurant had a very nice style. However the service at the restaurant is slow and sloopy. Would be a paradise with better service
Great hotel. Very posh. Amazing views and access to the beach
Historical building with amazing amenities.
Everything was wonderful, but the restaurant food left a little to be desired.
Location absolutely fabulous
Not all staff were welcoming. One or two were very good . Breakfast was very poor considering the status of the hotel . I know what a Scottish breakfast should be and theirs came no where near it. A huge disappointment.
Complimentary bikes.lots of staff. Comfy beds
Old
Where it was snd view
Needing refurbished and room not worth the 407
Everything , the staff were all so lovely, every single one of them . They really went out of their way to be friendly and of course helpful. The location is fabulous , views were so lovely and it was great to be able to access beach for walks so easily .We had both lunch and dinner which were of a high quality and totally delicious. The swimming pool and outdoor hydrotherapy pool didn’t disappoint either .
Nothing
The decor and style of the hotel. The dining room and menu was super. All staff were polite and welcoming.
Nothing
The hotel was stunning, great building well presented and in an incredible location.
The place was well presented with great facilities.
Wonderful views, great Spa, impressive bar area and bar meals and the breakfasts were what we would have expected. We hate to find fault but we were so disappointed that our room had a very basic stock of two teabags in the tea making equipment. The room was not cleaned or restocked and the telephone did not work. Thanks to the maintenance man we were able to get teabags and water. The front desk staff provided an explanation for the lack of room cleaning. They described priory was given to preparation of rooms for incoming guests and that they had experienced a high level of discharges and saw nothing wrong in this. We felt a hotel of the standing of the Marine and high room rates this was just not good enough. This was meant to be a special two night break but ended up feeling expensive and very average.
room after original being unsuitable no walk in shower excellent staff relocation
not enough variety in fruit small tea pots
We had the loveliest stay at the Marine Hotel. The room was absolutely gorgeous with superb views across the golf course. The hotel was in a great location with only a short walk to the beach and high street. The staff were most helpful, especially Gina who provided us with her knowledge, guidance and recommendations. We spent one morning in the spa which was extremely relaxing. We will definitely return to The Marine in the future.
Beautiful room, lovely bar areas, excellent breakfast, pool and Spa facilities amazing
We have just returned from 2 nights at this hotel in double double room. Room was fabulous. Food dreadful (breakfast And dinner) and spa facilities need a lot more of an upgrade. This hotel needs a lot more refinement before it can fully justify what it charges.
Beautiful hotel with amazing views and walks from the gardens
Nothing
Breakfast was great. Rooms were very comfortable. We loved the main lobby area.
The outdoor thermal pool could do with being bigger and more seating. Was often too busy when we went into it.
Lovely property and beautiful setting.
Fabulous staff who went above and beyond to help
Nothing
Husband and I stayed for 1 night. Check in was very quick. Beautiful lobby and bar area. We stayed on the first floor in a double sea view room. Views were incredible over the golf course towards the sea. The room itself was smaller than expected. The window was only able to open a few inches. Like many other reviews, the room was incredibly hot. Thankfully there was a fan provided so had to keep that on the entire time. Sadly no dressing table to be able to sit and do hair and make up. Could do with a bit modernising, some things appeared dated and worn. We went down to the spa but didn’t even stay an hour. There was maybe only 10 or so of us using the spa but it felt very cramped. Only 4 or 5 loungers so didnt have anywhere to relax. Indoor pool very cold. The hydro/heated pool that goes outside is very very small. Doesnt fit many people in it comfortably. few sauna/steam rooms. Luckily the spa facilities were included in our stay, I wouldn’t pay seperately to use the facilities for the likes of a spa day. Not many tables at the bar. For the size of hotel could do with being a bit bigger. Went to the restaurant for breakfast and it was lovely. Not many places have the option for a bacon roll etc so that was a welcome change. Good selection. In general the staff were excellent. Service was excellent. Location was excellent.
Staff are faultless, from reception, spa, breakfast to cleaning team. Get a sea view room and you won't need to watch TV. Golf course and beach right outside, so beautiful. Very quiet and bed extremely comfortable
As mentioned by many bar service is very slow. Staff lovely and polite but possibly understaffed?
A perfect relaxing stay with a luxurious touch . Wish we'd have more time to spend in the hotel
Great stay, lovely friendly staff, old charm bedrooms and great spa facilities. Food was good and breakfast excellent.
5 star location 5 star accommodation 5 star staff 5 star spa and treatments 4 star food at dinner…great starters, good steaks but overcooked, rest OK 3.5 star food at breakfast, quality and quantity
Beautiful hotel superb surroundings with amazing courteous friendly..shameabout the menu, why in a4 star hotel in Scotlands ample larder are you doing pizzas for dinner menu..you are in Scotland give me haggis neeps&tatties for heavens sake!🤨
This is the most magnificent hotel I have ever stayed at. I was here 4 years ago and it’s even better than before. I took my wife this time and she absolutely loves the place too. The food is fantastic, the staff are outstanding and the location is the best.
Nothing.
Delightful weekend at the Marine. Staff were exceptionally great, especially warm welcome at reception- super friendly & exceptionally helpful. Lovely seaview room. Fantastic breakfast- really high quality ingredients & the perfectly cooked potato scone!
Super room with a view and the location is amazing.
Please put lovely local or Scottish toiletries in big bottles in the rooms. Sell them at reception. The little mini bottles are so old fashioned. The big bottles in the spa are much better but not very luxurious. So many fabulous local soaps.
The staff was all class. Colin, Struan, Oliver in particular were the best kind. Facilities were wonderful. Would hope to come again before I’m too old to swing a club.
Beautiful property. Comfy, spacious and exceptionally clean room. Good gym and pool and a fantastic thermal suite. Grounds are beautiful and common areas are lovely and cosy. Great breakfast and great drinks. Good parking.
Drinks were on the pricier side. Food in bar area was nice but portion size was small for the price of the food. Some of the reception staff were not overly approachable but some were amazing.
We recently stayed at this wonderful hotel for 5 days with a bunch of great friends for our daughters wedding at another venue. I have to say that the latest bad reviews made me nervous - but wow am I glad we went anyway as we found them all to be completely incorrect. From the front desk staff - shout out to the wonderful Dawn!!! to Casey in the bar we could not have found more helpful and lovely people!! I have food allergies and I can say that they took it very seriously and I did not have one problem at all!! Is it 5 star - well if you look at it from a US perspective - maybe not - but as a wonderful, welcoming Scottish haven on the water - it’s 100 5 star!!! The hotel was very clean, comfortable and the drinks and food were great!! We normally stay in 5 star properties so have a reference point - go go go to the Marine at North Berwick - you won’t regret it !!!!
A good tea experience, but perhaps we should have researched more on the internet beforehand. We enjoyed the traditional tea, with three layered stand, and a whisky dram to accompany the food! Ask for a box to take home what you haven't eaten!
Amazing hotel with very comfortable rooms and friendly staff
Location was perfect
Decor is dull and very dark for a coastal resort. Spa treatment was poor quality - inexperienced staff, poor knowledge and confidence. Does not meet the standard you’d expect for the cost. On general service was below par - 40 min wait for bar drinks and wait staff generally not available or attentive - perfect to pleasant just not well trained.
Location - the ocean was worth the price! Breakfast was well done. Staff was exceptional. The hotel is nice if a bit dated.
No air conditioning, and it was hot. Bathroom fan did not work, so it was steamy after showering, too. Rooms were a bit small for the price. Price seems too high for value. Also, almost everything was about golfing, which made us feel a little left out. If you golf, well, it's perfect.
Location, charm, big room
A faint mildew smell
Very friendly staff delivering excellent service. The location and views are outstanding with stunning beach walks and an attractive town.
This hotel would not have been worth the cash rate of ~$600 USD per night but we paid with Chase points so it felt more inline with the value we obtained from it. Many of the non-urban / non-premiere hotels (not in the big cities or St. Andrew’s) in Scotland are what I would call “tired” - this property is in that category. The room we had was quite small and the window was stuck either closed or when we had them open it, open (there was no air condition though with the window open we were comfortable). The gym was basically a tired basement studio with the weights. The strongest features were its location and both a lovely lobby area and restaurant, though the back of the booths blocked the beautiful view when you were sitting. The location and staff were nice and the food was fairly good.
Excellent selection
Nothing
Beautiful location, stunning views from the building, restaurant was great, staff were friendly and helpful.
Rooms have all been renovated and look great, but bathroom in the room clearly hadn’t been and looked a bit dated.
Everything was 10/10
Overpriced with some rooms in very poor condition. Staff 50/50 with some very unprofessional and unpleasant. Food mediocre but extortionate prices. Far better quality accommodation nearby.
Amy at the front desk was amazing. She answered all our questions and provided wonderful insight on North Berwick.
The room with the bath and shower along with the superbly comfortable bed made our stay fabulous.

Great location, Not too big Not too small hotel. Views are amazing. Staff incredibly friendly and helpful . Aimee and James at the front fest made our stay especially enjoyable . They greeted us with a smile wanting to know how our day was or how our meal was. We had a beautiful suite on the 3rd floor. We were in 316 which had sweeping views of the golf course and sea. It had a lovely LR and sizable BR and Bathroom. The only complaint I have is the water pressure is quite bad and we could not get the water above a Luke warm. We did mention in to Aimee and she was right on it having someone look at it although it did not make a difference. Breakfast was lovely. A wonderful spread each morning as well as fresh cooked off the menu. I would stay again. Highly recommend
The Stay: We recently stayed at Marine North Berwick and were so disappointed that we checked out after only one night of a two-night stay. For a hotel marketed as a 5-star luxury destination, the experience was fundamentally flawed from start to finish. The Issues: • Cleanliness: We found visible cobwebs in the reception area and a spider hanging over our table during dinner. When we raised the issue of dirty seating in the restaurant, management informed us they are only deep-cleaned once a year. • Facilities & Accuracy: The "two restaurants" advertised are actually just one restaurant and a bar. Furthermore, the spa—a main reason for our booking—was effectively unavailable. We were given conflicting stories about staffing levels and availability, which felt like a lack of transparency. • Room Quality: Our first room had no cold water (the tap produced boiling water only), forcing a room move. Despite booking a "pet-friendly" package, no promised amenities (bed/bowl) were provided until we asked. • Service & Value: We were hit with an unexpected £35/night pet fee that wasn't transparently disclosed at booking. Dinner was overpriced, the order was incorrect, and the food quality was poor. Management Response: When we raised these concerns, the responses from the duty management were dismissive, suggesting that cleanliness issues "couldn't be helped." While the hotel has since refunded our stay after we contacted Booking.com, the level of service and maintenance is nowhere near the 5-star standard they advertise. Verdict: Beautiful building, but the management and basic standards of hygiene and service are severely lacking. We will not be returning.
I was excited to go back to this hotel, we came around 10 years ago, I remember the service and specially the spa, the open jacuzzi, its a most. However, this time, eventho the hotel looks refurbish, I was disapointed. I went to the communal toilet and there was a short lady with glasses laughing, and recording herself, I thought it was a guest, but no, she was cleaning the toilet, she just smiled at me like nothing happened,it was weird; the worst came the next day when I saw her again, she was a housekeeper, I kept thinking does she record herself at my room?with my things? Thats odd, is there any privacy nowadays? Its disapointing that a nice hotel like this you have to go through that.
The public areas of the hotel are beautiful, the views are unbelievable from main reception/ lobby
The bedrooms and ensuites are dated, felt like a Premier Inn. Definitely not what I expected for what we paid or from having visited other Marine and Lawn hotels recently. The rooms are stifling. Far too hot. Turned the radiators off completely and theres still heat coming out of them. The windows , whilst original and beautiful, are impossible to open. I tried and failed a couple of times during the night. It was a very uncomfortable sleep.
Le style et la déco étaient exceptionnels, la vue aussi, personnel aux petits soins, excellent petit déjeuner, et spa très agréable
The service and food and drink excellent !
Ooh the wallpaper was shocking but it suited the whole style !
Reception staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming and made a great first impression. Breakfast was really good too.
